ly Asked Questions t n e u Freq l o o sc h e r P What are the Advantages of the PLSD st a

What is the Cost? There is a minimal cost based on parent income levels. Prices range from $0 to $150 a month. Students that have been identified with disabilities, in accordance with Nebraska Department of Education Rule 51, will receive all preschool services at no cost to families.

• Must be a resident in the PLSD. • Must complete the developmental screening offered for free through the PLSD, as well as, provide all required documents by the deadline found in the application materials.

How is it Determined Who is Allowed into the Preschool Program? Approximately 160 spots are available for students. Selection of students for those spots is random. However, all students must complete the screening process and only a limited number of screening spots are available. Parents are encouraged to schedule an appointment for a screening immediately. Screening can be scheduled by calling 402-514-3243.

Why is there a Cost for Preschool Services in a Public School District? Unfortunately, preschool services are not required by the State of Nebraska for general education students. Therefore, there is limited state and federal funding for preschool programs. In the past, the PLSD has been able to offer limited preschool services for free through state and federal grants and local district funds. PLSD continues to utilize these funding sources but does not anticipate an increase in revenue to sustain the current program. Therefore, a minimal cost must be collected in an effort to maintain and continue to enhance the program.

Preschool Program? • All teachers are certified educators and have a specialized endorsement to teach preschool age children.

• The curriculum taught in preschool compliments and is aligned with the kindergarten curriculum taught in the PLSD. • The preschool program is very focused on teaching the whole child. Along with pre-academic skills, students will learn social skills such as how to play with others and how to behave in a classroom setting. In addition, the program encourages growth in motor skills and helps students learn to be more independent. • Literacy skills such as letter recognition, words, sounds and the beginning stages of reading are emphasized. However, children are exposed to all academic areas in preparation for Kindergarten. • To provide individual attention to each child, classes are limited to 15 students. Each class has 3 adults including one certified teacher.
