INTRODUCTION

Honey Bees and Garden Weeds was an exhibition that took place between April 24, 2014 and April 30, 2014. The show included 23 artists of all different media. Every MassArt student was allowed to participate. The show was carefully curated by Anna Stabler and Anna Clark. One challenge for designing the exhibition was that originally it was actually supposed to be two different shows however they were melded together because of their similar topics. The one section of the show focused on three graduating students’ takes on colony collapse in the bee community. Each used various media to portray this. The second section was a juried exhibit focusing on sustainability in art and design. 20 artists participated, each showing their own take on what it is to be sustainable and examples of ways to be sustainable throughout various facets of life. On April 28, there was the reception night for the show where nine local businesses helped to sponsor a raffle in order to raise funds for the MassArt Garden Collective. Overall, the show was a major sucess that spoke to students, faculty and the general public on the changing world we live in today.

Left is a digital rendering for the title wall in the space. The colors are based off of honey and lavendar; honey for the honey bees and lavendar for the garden weeds. Similarly the hexagons represented the patterns of honeycomb while the circles represented the circular nature of many flowers. This rendering was projected on the wall and then painted using recycled paint from Save That Stuff.

Above is the digital rendering of the wall tags accompanying each work. The text included the title of the piece, the artist’s name, and in applicable cases the size or, in the fashion design cases, the type of the piece. On each tag was either a pattern of circles or a pattern of hexagons depending on if the art was apart of the honey bee section or the garden weed section.
