For the first assignment I underwent in typography, I was assigned two fonts that I was to disect with anatyomical type rules. The arrangement of letters RTWhaego utilizes the many examples of letter anatomy, but the fonts may not contain all letter anatomy rules.

The type face called Avant Garde was created by American graphic designers Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase. It was made in 1970, being a refurbished font inspired by a logo that Herb Lubalin designed for a magazine called Avant Garde in the late 1960’s. For a while it was not intended to be a fully available and workable typeface, and as such it lacked in details like Roman Weights for years. It was Ed Benguiat, an American typographer, who condensed and styled it to a new version in 1974. In 1983 it was yet again reworked by photographer Ned Bunnel. The font has been used for a variety of sources, it is the main typeface of Sony Corporation, the logo name of David Guetta and Justin Bieber, and is also Adidas primary font.

The type face Bembo was designed by the Venetian punch cutter and goldsmith Francesco Griffo, and named after the Venetian poet, cardinal, and literary theorist Pietro Bembo. It was originally used to publish Pietro Bembo’s book “De Aetna”, a book recounting the man’s visit to Mount Etna. Francesco Griffo did not realize how popular the font would become, for it was recognized as a departure from the common pen drawn calligraphy of the time, 1495. The font was released for typesetting in 1929 by Stanley Morison, a respected English typographer, the same man who made Times New Roman. Biblical scholars, linguists, medievalists, and classicists have all used the Bembo font in their writings. Today, the font is used very commonly in the titling of books and movies, along with representational texts in many forms and book fonts on account of how elegant yet easy to read it is.
