PREDICTABLE GENETICS PROVEN PERFORMANCE 50 Bulls & 30 Open Heifers Sell March 2, 2019, Pawnee Rock, KS
Fellow Cattlemen, We hope this catalog finds you enjoying a stretch of decent winter weather because as this catalog is being put together, we are experiencing some of the coldest weather in recent memory. Yet, we are somewhat happy because the mud has frozen for the time being. On the bright side, spring grass should be plentiful and is just around the corner. We feel this is a set of bulls that are as good as can be found anywhere in the country, despite the constant stressful weather making it a challenge to present them. They have powered through the inclement weather, gained well, and as you will see flipping through the catalog, they look the part. We have made a push in recent years to add in a measured amount of extra performance in the bulls and females we have offered while maintaining a high level of calving ease and fleshing ability. We think this group speaks for itself. The average of the entire sale offering, bulls and heifers, is in the top 25% of the breed for $F and better than top 20% for $CEZ and $BMI. Many of the bulls are heifer-safe, with the bulk of the rest of them having top tier birthweights and calving ease predictors. We think this group, as well as the sires and dams that produced them, are achieving a balance of traits at such a high level that they are unmatched anywhere in the country. You will see that the entire bull offering has been feed efficiency tested on the GrowSafe system at HyPlains Feedlot. We have long known that LF genetics were in the top couple of percent of all cattle fed at HyPlains over the last 17 years and now they are getting a chance to prove it. This data gets more and more valuable with each set collected. The feed efficiency data point, at this time, is still hard to find in most bull offerings. It is one that will pay big dividends over the life of these bulls and the offspring they produce. Please use this data and feel free to ask any questions that may come to mind. Once again, all the bulls will sell with GGP50K testing that provides genomically enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) as well as pedigree verification accuracy. GE EPDs have the equivalent accuracy of 12 calves weighed, measured, and built into their numbers. This is comparable to their first calf crop already being figured in. This greatly enhances the relationship between the numbers on paper and their actual performance. The heifers have been GGP25K tested which equates to about 8 calves worth of accuracy. They will be pelvic measured by sale time so check our website for more details. As we have promoted in the past, we are continuing to lend a helping hand to the progressive cattlemen that purchase and use our genetics. We offer a program to purchase the calves sired by our bulls or females or help place them in a partner feeding operation, if retained ownership is desired. This is designed to help our customers receive top dollar for using our genetics, as well as give us access to the data collected from these genetics. This helps drive the accuracy of the numbers of the sires and dams in production here at Loving Farms. We would love the opportunity to talk about these programs with you, so catch up with us on sale day and we can help get this lined up. As always, the cattle will be available for viewing at any time leading up to the sale. We will again be broadcasting the sale live on DVAuctions.com, so please login and get registered to bid at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot make it. If you can’t make it to the sale and the internet isn’t an option, please feel free to call any of the names listed in the catalog to bid live over the phone. Make sure to plan to be with us Friday night for supper and social and then again for lunch on Saturday the 2nd at noon, ahead of the sale at 1:00 PM CST. Thank you for taking time to thumb through the offering. We hope to see you March 2nd.

Feeding & Development Done Right We employ the service of John Ney with Nutrition Solutions to help balance the feed rations as well as to monitor the intake and performance of the bulls. The bulls start out on the cow without creep feed and only rely on their mothers for weaning performance. This allows us to evaluate the performance of the cow as well as the calf. They are weaned on a high forage content mixed ration and allowed to grow at a slower pace to increase frame and give them time to develop. As final selections are made, the sale bulls are moved to a ration containing higher energy while maintaining a higher forage content. These bulls never see a concentrate ration and we feel that is important to a digestive system that will only have access to a forage based system post sale. Exercise is key in the development of a young sire, we feel that it’s important to give them access to plenty of space to move to aid in their growth.
Overview of EPDs
Carcass Weight (CW): expressed in pounds as a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Calving Ease Direct (CED): The most important EPD in sire selection for use on heifers. This value is expressed as a percent of unassisted births; the more positive a number is the more desirable.
Ribeye Area (REA): REA measures the difference in ribeye area of a bull’s progeny. REA is measured in square inches. A higher REA EPD is indicative of expected larger ribeyes.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Reflects a bull’s ability to sire daughters who calve unassisted. The value is expressed as a percentage of unassisted births, with a more positive number being more desirable. Birth Weight (BW): An indicator of birth weight and calving ease. Larger BW EPDs typically, but not always indicate more calving difficulty. Weaning Weight (WW): Weaning weight measures the differences in weight of calves at weaning, and is also reported in pounds. A higher WW EPD indicates an expected higher weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Like other weight traits, YW measure the differences in weight of animals at yearling, and is also expressed in pounds. Higher YW EPDs indicate a higher expected yearling weight. Milk (MK): the expected differences in a bull’s daughters’ calves at weaning weight due to their milking ability. Milk is looking at how well daughters milk and how that translates to the weaning weights of their calves. A higher MK EPD indicates a higher weaning weight due to the bull’s daughters’ milking ability. Total Maternal (TM): TM predicts the total difference in weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves at weaning. A portion of this difference in weight comes from the milking ability of the bull’s daughters (MK EPD), and a portion comes from the genes for growth passed from the bull to his daughters and then on to their calves. The TM EPD is calculated by taking ½ of a bull’s WW EPD + his MK EPD. Stayability (ST): The newest addition to the Shorthorn EPD lineup, Stayability is a measure of the percentage of a bull’s daughters that will still be in the herd at six years old. Like CED and CEM, Stayability is expressed as a percentage. A higher ST EPD indicates a higher percentage of daughters staying in the herd.

Backfat (FT): Fat thickness measures the amount of back fat on a carcass. FT is reported in inches. A lower FT EPD indicates a bull whose progeny will have less fat on the carcass than a bull with a higher FT EPD. Marbling Score (MB): evaluation of intramuscular fat deposition in the ribeye as expressed in USDA numeric marbling scores. Higher values indicate genetics that are expected to marble and have a higher quality grade. Calving Ease Direct ($CEZ): This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. British Maternal Index ($BMI): This multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity. Feedlot ($F): $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F.

7523 is as powerful of a lead off sire as we have offered. 7523 combines one of the breed’s leading growth and marbling sires, Optimus 4095, with the knock out production power of the Okie cow family. This bull is absolutely off the charts in nearly every measured trait. His dam raised the lead off and top seller of the 2017 sale, Answer 5720. She displays awesome genetic potential as her progeny have indexed 104, 115, 108, 118 for BW, WW, YW, and MB EPDS. Between a killer look and outstanding numbers, you will have to look long and hard to find a more complete young sire. At 7/8 Shorthorn, if mated to purebred cows, his offspring will qualify as purebred.
2 A true spread bull, 7539 is in the top 15% of the breed for BW and CED and top 20% for WW and YW. His mother is a proven performance cow and is showing it as she is also the maternal granddam to the lead off spring yearling bull.

Soggy and huge middled, 7532 is one of the most eye appealing sons of Optimus we have produced. When you combine his top 25% BW EPD with a balanced set of growth numbers, you get a bull very well suited for our short range conditions.
3 Optimus 7427 ties all the numbers together with great performance and superb feed efficiency. With the 3rd lowest actual conversion and indexing 145 for gain, he will sire fast gaining calves that will get in and out of the lot in a timely fashion and save a pile in feed costs as well. 7427 also spreads as well as any in the offering, with top 25% BW and top 10% growth EPDs.

Here is a low birthweight and high growth Prestige 0590 son whose numbers may not tell the whole story. He has more than enough actual performance to hang with the explosive growth EPD Optimus sons, but do it in a much more acceptable calving ease package. Also, a very efficient gainer, gaining well over the average per day and indexing 112 for conversion.

Here is a rare opportunity to own a son of one of the model composite cows anywhere. 7612 is a maternal half brother to the great Ash Valley Answer 9652. This is only the second bull calf by the Pacesetter Award winning female, Ash Valley Advantage 6196, as she has been a prolific female producer. She backs up 7612’s solidly balanced EPD profile with BW, WW, YW, and MB ratios of 101, 107, 106, and 106 over 10 progeny.

A Leader son by a 2-time Pacesetter, high performance Answer 9652 daughter. It would be hard to imagine a better combination of the maternal abilities of Leader and the growth and carcass power of Answer. Don’t overlook the high ADG and well below average F:G conversion on this one as well.

The feed efficiency freak. 7538 is the bull that should save you way more than you pay for him over the life of your investment. He consumed over 8 lbs./day less than the average of this group, saving more than $75 per calf on feed over their lifetime. If you combine this performance with superior growth traits, he is a cattle feeder’s dream.

A Capitalist son that is extremely balanced across the whole spectrum of EPDs. Top 20% for BW and CE EPDs and top 10% for WW and YW. He is one of the highest in the offering for $F as well. His dam is a half sister to the super high feed efficiency Lot 17 bull.
Sale Terms
Semen and Breeding Soundness Exams
All of the bulls will be semen checked and a Breeding Soundness Exam performed by sale day. These will be performed by our long term veterinarian Dr. Bill Niederee of Countryside Vet, Great Bend. We strongly encourage all buyers to always recheck before bulls are turned out to confirm that injury hasn’t happened between early February and the turn out time.
Insurance
We will have available a couple of different options for this year. The standard mortality insurance with two different coverage lengths. New for this year we will also have an option for coverage that includes not only mortality, but also infertility due to accident, sickness, disease or injury. Please inquire at settlement about insurance options. If insurance is not purchased, all bulls staying at Loving Farms awaiting delivery will be at the buyer’s risk.
Health
Each lot will be accompanied by a state approved health certificate for interstate shipment. Buyers should understand their specific state health requirements. For Canadian delivery, all necessary paperwork and fees will be completed by the seller and any costs/fees above that are required for domestic delivery will be at the buyer’s expense. All lots have been covered by a multi-product wide spectrum health program including Bovishield Gold, Pyramid 7, Ivomec, and Dectomax.
Delivery
Free delivery to customers in Kansas. All lots not picked up sale day will be kept free until April 1, 2019. Loving Farms provide delivery to most points in the US for a minimal fee. Lots will be grouped by general direction and distance from Pawnee Rock and travel expenses divided over the number of lots on load.
We guarantee cost for delivery inside the continental US will not exceed $300 per lot. There will be a $100 discount per lot on all bulls that are picked up sale day.
Volume Discounts
Any buyer that purchases 3 or more bulls will qualify for a volume discount equal to the number of bulls bought, up to 10%. Bulls must meet a $3000/bull minimum to qualify. Does not apply to heifer lots.
Genetic Testing
All of the bull lots have been DNA tested with the Neogen GGPHD50K AI sire test. This will not only test for all known genetic conditions and verify parentage, but provides genomically enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). The females have been tested with the GGP-LD25K test that results in GE-EPDs. All females were either tested for genetic defects if probable by pedigree or ruled out by pedigree and not tested.
Liability
Each animal(s) will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by the sellers for a reasonable amount of time. If the buyer is leaving the animal(s) in the care of the seller, the buyer will purchase insurance for the duration of the care or accept any liability for their purchase. Neither the owners, employees, nor any other affiliated personnel can be responsible for any accidents, but they will make every effort to provide for the safety and comfort of those attending.
Why
Invests in Feed Efficiency Testing
The simple answer, because feed is the number one controllable expense in beef production. That’s right, controllable. High feed efficiency can save huge dollars no matter which sector we are talking about; cow/calf, stocker, feedlot. Loving Farms genetics have a track record nearly two decades long, of low feed conversion in their feeding environments. We have sought ways to quantify this back to the individual level, but it requires a substantial investment in time and facilities OR a feeding partner that is trying to make the cattle they feed better as well. This is the evolution for us and our feeding partners at HyPlains Feedyard.
What should we expect?
The first thing is to realize that the bull is only half the equation. Secondly, the females that these sires are mated to will vary as widely as the bulls in this offering. The take away is that this will be a multigenerational process. There will be some successes seen very quickly, others will take longer. Since it isn’t feasible to test every female, the progressive cattleman will select better than average bulls for the components of feed efficiency from now on and the result will be a positive increase in efficiency.
How does feed efficiency impact my operation?
Here are a couple of scenarios to help quantify what a shift in feed efficiency will mean to you. For both scenarios, assume a 20% increase in feed efficiency.
Stocker/Feedlot:
Steers/heifers are placed in the feedlot for an average of 240 days on feed. Assume Dry Matter Intake (DMI) decreases by 20% (50#/hd to 40#/hd) and feed is costing $.049/lb. 240 days x 10% less days* = 24 days 24 days x $0.40 yardage = $ 9.60/hd 216 days x 10#/day x $.049/lb. = $105.84/hd $115.44/hd x40 head Total savings of 40 head calf crop: $4,617.60
Cow/calf:
Spring calving cows are fed for 120 days from January 1 to May 1. Assuming forage hay cost is $70/ton and 24% protein at $500/ton. A 1300 lb. cow eating 2% of her body weight would consume 26# of dry hay and another 3.5# of protein to meet her requirements. 120 days x 5#/day of hay x $.0375/lb. = $22.50/hd 120 days x .7#/day of protein x $.25/ lb. = $21.00/hd $43.50/hd x 100 cows Total savings in a 120 day period: $4,350.00
Repeat these savings over a 5 year life span of that one bull and no other trait has that return on investment. *LF genetics for low feed conversion average a 8-10% increase in ADG meaning they reach goal weight faster.
“I’ve been feeding Marty Loving’s calves for more than 20 years. We have 20 years worth of data and his calves convert in the top 10% of the cattle we feed, and we feed some pretty good ones. His investment in the GrowSafe program shows his commitment to his customers and their end product.” - Tom Jones, Hy-Plains Feedyard

It’s very rare when you get a young sire that excels in every parameter from birth to growth to carcass to feed efficiency. Answer 8310 epitomizes what we look for in a breed or even industry changing sire prospect. 8310 is top of the breed for CED, CEM, and BW combined with top 5% WW and top 1% CW and MB as well as having top tier ADG and feed conversion.
31 A low birthweight, moderate growth Answer son out of a really good, young Prestige X Double Duty daughter indexing 107 and 113 for weaning and yearling on her first two calves. With his pedigree, he will be safe on heifers and have rapid growth to weaning.

Breed leading WW, YW and MB EPDs while still having a below breed average BW EPD. This Optimus son shows well below average feed intake resulting in a low feed conversion.
32 A highly feed efficient son of Prestige 0590, 8219 ratioed 116 for feed conversion while also posting a 124 for ADG. He couples that efficiency with the ability to post weaning and yearling ratios of 108 and 113. Also note, 8219 was one of the few to have an equally high REA and IMF on his ultrasound.

It just so happens that the most eye appealing of the Optimus sons is also one of the most balanced numbered. He is one of the lightest actual BW and has top 25% CED, BW, CEM and $CEZ as well as 15% WW and YW figures. His mother ranks in the top percentile for BW among active cows in the breed. The number one feed efficiency bull in the spring pen. This Answer 5720 son consumed an impressively low 17.48 #/day and converted at 5.66 which was a ratio of 133. This indicates his offspring will be easy on the pocketbook. It doesn’t hurt that he is the top 1% of the breed for CED and $CEZ.

A linebred Prestige that is top 25% for BW and CEM and also above breed average for WW EPD.
In Loving Memory This year, we honor the Matriarch of Loving Farms, Aletha Loving. Her presence will be missed but her lifelong love of family and cattle are as evident on the farm as ever before. We cherish her memory.
Benefits of to cow/calf producers
All bulls will sell with GGP50K testing that provides genomically enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) as well as pedigree verification accuracy. GE EPDs have the equivalent accuracy of 12 calves weighed and measured built into their numbers. This is comparable to their first calf crop already being figured in. This greatly enhances the relationship between the numbers on paper and their actual performance. The heifers have been GGP25K tested which equates to about eight calves worth of accuracy. Maternal GE-EPDs – Improve profits per cow: • Verify calving-ease bulls, saving time, cost and stress when calving heifers. • Identify bulls and cows with superior reproduction traits to improve cowherd fertility and maternal productivity. • Better fertility improves conception rates, calving window and calf-crop uniformity. Performance GE-EPDs – Optimize efficient returns: • Produce cows that improve pounds weaned per exposed female. • Produce cows for optimum growth for your grazing environment. • Improve feed efficiency, producing heifers and cows that gain well on less feed and pass thrifty traits onto to their calves. Quality GE-EPDs – More consistency of beef quality: • Helps customers retaining calves, or selling into grids or value networks. • Adds value and reputation quality in stockers or feeder calves. • Predicts quality up front, saving years of valuable time, with less hassle than collecting carcass data. *Info from genomics.neogen.com/

Sell Shorthorn-Influenced Calves for a Premium Let us partner with you!
Marketing at Weaning If your operation typically sells at weaning, we have buyers ready to purchase Shorthorn influenced calves without your typical market distortion (sorts on color, size,etc.). This eliminates yardage, sale expense, and essentially cuts out the middleman. Partial Ownership to Finish If your desire is to market the cattle to finish weight and maybe your cash flow doesn’t allow for it, we have feeding partners willing to own a percentage of the feeding group. This allows the owner a cash flow up front and still be able to participate in the profitability of finish cattle marketing as well as have the option to achieve any grid based premiums. Feed will be financed to finishing date and settlement will be made at close out. This is a nice option for the producer who has been a typical market at weaning operation that wants to transition. Retained Ownership Finishing The feed, yardage, and expenses are carried for the length of the feeding period and settled at close out. You are paid on the net of sale minus expenses. Our feeding partners have been exceptional in terms of rate of gain as well as feed conversion. They also have delivery rights for USPB and other grid based marketing opportunities. We have maintained a relationship with our feedlot partners for over 20 years and they have fed thousands of head of Shorthorn-influenced cattle. They are very much in tune with the ability of Shorthorn influenced cattle’s ability to gain and convert in the top tier of everything they feed. Allow us the opportunity to help you maximize the full value of Shorthorn genetics.
