Dr. Matthew Coffey is Assistant Professor of Choral Studies at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley where he conducts two choirs and teaches coursework in conducting and secondary choral methods. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and degrees in Music Education from the University of Houston and Sam Houston State University. Prior to beginning doctoral studies, he taught high school choir in Texas public schools for 11 years. Dr. Coffey is active as a guest conductor, clinician, and presenter. In recent years, he has guest conducted and presented interest sessions throughout Texas and in Arkansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. When he’s not buried in a score, he can be found on the couch rooting for the Houston Astros with his wife, Ashley, a grant writer for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and their son, Elliott. His non-musical passions include hot wings, Mexican food, and iced coffee.
Dr. Lynne Gackle is Professor Emeritus of Music at Baylor University where she served as the Director of Choral Activities and Chair of the Ensemble Division. Dr. Gackle previously taught at the University of South Florida, the University of Mississippi, and the University of Miami (FL). She received her education from LSU (BME) and the University of Miami (MM/PhD). Lynne is an active choral clinician and conductor, nationally and internationally. She has held various positions within the American Choral Directors Association, including National President, President of the Southern Region, and President of ACDA-Florida, where she received the Wayne Hugoboom Distinguished Service Award for dedicated service, leadership, and excellence. She also served as the Vice President of College/Community Choirs for the Texas Choral Directors Association. Gackle is the editor of Choral Artistry for the Singer (Walton Music/GIA) and the Lynne Gackle Choral Series (Colla Voce). Internationally recognized for her research on the female adolescent voice, Lynne is the author of Finding Ophelia’s Voice, Opening Ophelia’s Heart and is a contributing-author for other books published by GIA, Oxford, and Lead Author for Voices In Concert (Hal Leonard/McGraw Hill). She was also a contributing author to the Oxford Handbook for Singing (Oxford, 2019) and Choral Reflections (Insights from American Choral Conductor/Teachers (Hal Leonard Publishing, 2022). Gackle was awarded Baylor’s Outstanding Faculty Award in Research (2012) and received the highly coveted Texas Choir Masters Award (2021). In 2023, she received the MacPherson Prize from the San Antonio Chamber Choir for excellence in choral conducting and choral contributions within the state of Texas. Most recently, she has been named the 2023 Frost Centennial Medal awardee for outstanding professional contributions by alumni from the University of Miami (FL). She holds memberships in ACDA, TMEA, TCDA, and NATS.
Conductor-teacher Kristina Caswell MacMullen has devoted her career to sharing music and inspiration with students and audiences. Her collaborations with fellow musicians continue to confirm her abiding hope for the future and an unflagging belief in the power of choral music. Currently, MacMullen serves as the Mary Gibbs Jones Chair of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Baylor University. She conducts the Baylor A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers, and leads the graduate program in choral conducting. Prior to her appointment at BU, MacMullen served on the faculties of the University of North Texas and The Ohio State University. Her interdisciplinary work earned her the Sir William Osler Award at OSU and the President’s Special Recognition Award at UNT. MacMullen has also been recognized by TCDA for her innovation in programming. MacMullen believes that great potential lies in choral performance and creative communication. She strives to guide her students, as they desire to make an impact for good. Creative projects include interdisciplinary performances addressing human trafficking, the Kubler-Ross stages of grief, play theory, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, archetype exploration, belonging, American song, civic engagement, and the nature of tears. As an active adjudicator and clinician, MacMullen has conducted All-State and honors choirs throughout the United States. She has presented and co-presented interest sessions at state, regional, national and international conferences. Her teaching and conducting is featured on the DVD Conducting-Teaching: Real World Strategies for Success published by GIA (2009). Her editions are published by Boosey & Hawkes, Musicatus Press, and MusicSpoke. MacMullen earned both the Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degrees from Michigan State University. She completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Texas Tech University. MacMullen has enjoyed a diverse career as a public-school teacher, interacting with students in rural, suburban, and urban settings, elementary through high school. She also sings with the professional ensemble Mirabai.
Jennifer Franz-Melady was the head choir director at Magnolia High for 19 years. Her choirs received consistent UIL sweepstakes. Her choirs participated in the American Classic Madrigal Festival in Dallas and San Antonio where they received consistent Performance of Distinction awards. The Magnolia High School Chorale performed at the Southwest ACDA convention in Oklahoma City. Chorale was the co- winner of the American Classic Madrigal Festival in Dallas, 2022, and was first runner up in 2023. They were also an honor choir at the 2022 TMEA Convention in San Antonio. Her Chorale was The Foundation for Music Education national recording contest winner for 2017 and 2018. She has taught all grade levels from elementary music through supervising student teachers at Ohio State University. Jennifer holds a piano performance degree from The Eastman School of Music and a Masters in Secondary Choral Music Education from Ohio State University. She has been the accompanist for the Region 9 TMEA choirs and was accompanist for the TMEA All-State Women’s choir for 2016, 2017 and 2023. She accompanied the Small School TMEA All-State Mixed choir in 2020. She is an active choral clinician in the Houston area and taught for 38 years. She is a member of TMEA and ACDA
Janet Zielinski is a retired music teacher who taught 32 years in the state of Texas. She has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Colorado State University where she studied piano and cello. While in attendance, she accompanied voice class, voice studio, and the women’s choir, as well as master classes with Kirby Shaw and Vincent Persichetti. Upon retirement Janet has accompanied band, orchestra and choral events and serves as a clinician and adjudicator for orchestra. Janet currently resides in Spring, Texas with her husband Drew and her Yorkie, Bitz.
Kristy Cox began accompanying at an early age and has spent her career as a church pianist, accompanist and teacher. A native of Wisconsin, Mrs. Cox received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and then moved to Texas to earn a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. In addition to maintaining a private piano studio in The Woodlands, she is in demand as an accompanist and works with many outstanding directors, choral groups and soloists of all levels in the Conroe and Magnolia school districts as well as District Honor and Region 9 choirs. She has had the privilege of performing with seven different choirs at TMEA Conventions since 2013 and is looking forward to playing for choirs at both TMEA and ACDA conventions in the spring of 2025. She is the accompanist for The Woodlands Area Mass King Choir and has been serving as the pianist for The Woodlands First Baptist Church for the past twelve years under the direction of Dr. Don Barrick. In 2018, Mrs. Cox was blessed to accompany The American Festival Choir on their tour throughout Italy. She holds memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, Music Teachers National Association and the National Federation of Music Clubs. When not sitting near a piano, Mrs. Cox enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband Steven, their daughter Jen and Scottish Terrier Gus, and has recently discovered that she loves to sew.
