HISTORY/BIOGRAPHY

HANDS OF HARVEST is a documentary film that chronicles the journey of migrant Mexican women who travel to fishing villages on Maryland's Eastern shore to pick crabs in seafood plants scattered along its rural shores, offering a glimpse into a renowned American industry being kept afloat by foreign labor. Because of the unwillingness of the younger generation of local women to pick crabs for a living, the picking houses on the Eastern shore have relied on women on seasonal H2-B visas from Mexico to process the Atlantic blue crab. Blue crabs are not only a viable economic resource, but also a Maryland cultural icon and “Hands of Harvest sets out to reveal the history and capture the struggle of the watermen who are fighting to keep their livelihood and culture intact in the face of imminent demise. It also documents the lives of the Mexican women who, in an effort to support their own families, are unwitting allies in the effort to maintain this storied industry. Airs Sunday, July 8, at 9 p.m. 2

Only a few decades ago, computers filled entire rooms, and consumed enough electricity to power over 100 households. The Digital Equipment Corporation transformed the entire industry, making computers smaller, less expensive and more accessible. DEC’s founder, Ken Olsen, led the revolution and in the process developed innovations that became the basic principles of the Information Age. Olsen led DEC on a meteoric rise as one of the nation’s largest and most successful corporations. Just as precipitously, DEC became a casualty of the industry and expectations that they had helped to create. DIGITAL_MAN / DIGITAL_WORLD presents the history of the Digital Equipment Corporation, and its lasting impact on American culture. Airs at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, and Sunday, July 15.

NATURE/SCIENCE/ADVENTURE NOVA: GREAT APE - The great apes seem to have rich emotional lives similar to our own. But just how smart are these animals? A new generation of investigators is revealing the secret mental lives of great apes; our evolutionary next-of-kin are turning out to be far smarter than most experts ever imagined. But just as clever experiments are exposing the extraordinary abilities of great apes, new research is redefining the mental talents of our own species. Scientists are at last zeroing in on what separates us from our closest living relatives. Airs Sunday, July 1, at 6 p.m., and Tuesday, July 3, at 7 p.m.

In AMERICAN VALUES, AMERICAN WILDERNESS, the late Christopher Reeve introduces us to a wide variety of citizens sharing their deep love of wilderness, from early childhood experiences to expressions of hope for the future. These are stories of love for the American wilderness, and an earnest plea to all to take an active role in its protection. Airs Sunday, July 1, at 9 p.m., and Tuesday, July 3, at 10 p.m.
