Welcome to the 5th issue of BAYFashion Magazine!

The first thing you will notice is that we have changed the name of the magazine from BAYCuties to BAYFashion. I always used to say, ‘What is in a name?’ it seems like a lot... I had to agree to the popular opinion that since the magazine covers fashion and fashionista’s in the San Francisco Bay Area, it should be name BAYFashion to represent its mission and content. I hope all of you agree and continue to give us the great support we have enjoyed so far.

If you are a returning reader, I would like to start by thanking you for your continued interest in our magazine and I hope you have ‘Liked’ us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/baycuties In this issue BAYFashion Magazine focuses on discovering new Fashion Designers & Models from Northern California who can compete at the highest level. We took 10 models selected through popular voting on our site and paired them with upcoming Designers and Photographers to create what we called their ‘Super model look’. It’s more than just creating unique fashion designs, for Marti Miernik it’s a way to breathe life into history, fantasy, and folklore alike.

Born in Poland, Marti is an award winning designer whose first memory of fashion is standing in a living room; somewhere her seamstress mother took her to be fitted for new school clothes.

There were two things her mother hated – buying off the rack and the school-provided uniforms. Marti couldn’t have been more than six when her mother talked the school principal into letting Marti wear uniforms her mother designed, as long as they were the school colors. A passion for custom created clothing has stuck with Marti ever since.

Marti has had a great interest in history for as long as she can remember, and fell in love with the Renaissance Period at a young age. Upon coming to the United States, she looked for entertainment that catered to her passion for Europe and eventually became involved with the Renaissance Faire community.

Playing the role of Mary, Queen of Scots on the faire circuit, it was important to Marti that she looked the part and that her costumes were as authentic as possible. Often finding that most costumers she worked with did not embody the vision she saw for the Queen, Marti took matters into her own hands and created custom designs; pulling inspiration from books, paintings, and museums. “…costuming is one of the key factors if you want to transport the patron to a different time period. And so, I create period fashions, bringing the best of what I’ve

learned to life, teaching and sharing my passion for costuming and history with others.”

From couture wedding gowns to historically correct period pieces, Marti’s custom made creations are in a league of their own. Each piece is impeccable in their design and construction, with great attention to detail.

The fabrics come mostly from Los Angeles, with a few pieces imported from Florence and Venice. As for beads and pearls, Marti’s favorite spot is General Bead in San Francisco. The meticulous beading – which Marti does all by hand, one bead at a time – takes the designs to the next level; each piece able to stand tall on its own, clearly above others in the sea of costume designing.

All the embroidery on each piece is researched extensively, and every inch of external stitching is done by hand, guaranteeing that each final product is historically accurate.

As for Marti’s choice in sewing machines, Yuki is her constant companion for sewing, while all the embroidery work is done on a Brother Duetta 4500. “I love that machine.

I seem to stun everyone when I mention that I do all my leather embroidery on it. Even the dealer was amazed when I showcased my work a time or two. I don’t think I could get half as much of my intricate work done without it.”

For almost two decades Marti has worked with Renaissance Productions, designing and producing some of the best themed events on the West Coast.

Their most recent events include the Valhalla Renaissance Faire, Ardenwood Shakespeare Festival, Folsom Renaissance Faire, Sonora Celtic Festival, Golden Gate Renaissance Faire, International Jousting Championships, and Pittsburg Renaissance Faire.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, Marti recently started a guild called The Needles Eye – a group for people with a deep love of period tailoring, who educate visitors at various events about the construction of period pieces.

While the majority of Marti’s clients are from the United States, she has been commissioned to create pieces for clients in Italy and Poland. As for any famous clients, she’s not talking except to say that while visiting Florence recently, she was commissioned to reconstruct a baroque gown for a “big” wedding. Sounds juicy!

Gabrielle Cardoza is a stylist from the bay area based in San Francisco and a graduate from the Fashion Institute of Design

and Merchandising of San Francisco. Born and raised in San Jose Gabrielle’s style is constantly changing but two elements remain the same in her fashion sense no matter what path the trends may take, “keep it classy but never leave your edginess behind.” This spring/summer expect to see lots of nude tone sheer fabrics, paired up also with brights as seen in Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2011 . by Barbara da Graca Her passion to reuse is reflected in her creative handmade art work of necklaces, bracelets, hats and other unique adorns. It is her commitment to give a purpose to a metal scrap possibly deemed to be trashed out. ‘‘Nothing is a must in my creative process”. The result is a mixture of nice Victorian laces beautifully placed together with some vintage beads, old keys along with a well lined row of antique pearls found in the Summer cottage antique stores in Petaluma __ one of the preferred stores that Mary Meg likes to browse around. ‘’My work is a collection of antique items _ metal, beads, pearls, Victorian laces and whatever I find interesting and talks to me’. She adds with a smile of satisfaction for her compromise to whatever can be recycled to depict a movement of time.

Don’t expect two pieces alike in her jewelry. As she expresses, with a vivid bright eyes full of zest for her commitment to enjoying her own non pretentious work “ I do not get worried or pre occupied on how a bronze metal is going to compose along with a blue turquoise bead or a vintage cross that I eventually found in my backyard”, and she explains “ I just look at it and see what that 100 year old piece of antique is telling me, simply so’… Apparently, the desire to recreate is bigger than any trend, a natural commitment that pulses her imagination to give a new face to antique/vintage items.

Her creative process deepened while working as an art instructor in a program for adults with developmental disabilities.

It seems like a rewarding process that when one tries to help others in less fortunate situations, one gains a passport to a discovery of your own hidden treasures. In Mary’s case, the desire to empower those adults brought to her a new path to her then unknown possibilities. As she vividly speaks “It helped me to see an avenue of creativity that I had never developed before’’.

Excelling herself and proving that the early years sewing with her mom brought more than fond memories… an apocalyptic Metal brass cuff and a metal corset a la Madonna is next to be accomplished in her busy studio.

This vintage artist kept not only her mom’s initials _ Meg _ as a way to honor her living experience with such an influential person in her life, but also a priceless inheritance, the ability to make castle from ashes, or better ...to make art from a piece of an antique bobbin, or from a tiny vintage light bulb, or even a tiny piece of a tarnished briolette will spark in a new way. You will be amazed!

The Year of the ‘CurVELAceous’

by Adrienne Glenn As another new year begins, and we slowly adapt to writing the number 2011 at the end of the date, the word ‘change’ is one thrown around regularly in conversation and resolutions for the year ahead.

Change is a word that we in the plus size modeling community love to hear. It is a word that gives us hope. Hope for the chance that the fashion industry and American culture will no longer be surprised by seeing different standards of beauty on the cover of magazines, on their commercials, and as icons.

Hope that there is a major change in people’s perception of a person’s size equaling their beauty.

The thing about change, is that following the initial shift, is a time period of unsurities and unknown direction. Today, I believe that is where the plus size modeling industry currently is.

Before we were non-existent, then we were unaccepted but determined, then there was a lull, we then saw a glimmer of acceptance and we were again, determined; now we are finally being seen, appreciated, and even applauded… but I know that it isn’t what we fully want it to be yet.

We aren’t yet integrated. I still see us on the outskirts, with separate garment racks, runways, and dressing rooms… not yet fully allowed into the big leagues.

I’m looking forward to the day we see different opportunities for our fellow curvy beauties… for instance, something besides diet ads.

What about size creates a supermodel? Why can’t it be about one’s beauty as a whole… instead of the protrusion of one’s hip bones?

There are a few women that have been able to break towards that skinny ceiling and approach the status of supermodel, while working her supercurves. But the day has not yet come where you see curves as another standard in the world of fashion, marketing, and beauty… and as a plus size model myself, I truly hope that this is the year we get to witness a change in beauty standards and for the industry to be less driven by profit, the elitists, and the fashion industry’s past standards and more by true, back to basics, overall beauty.

How come we never see a beautifully curvaceous woman selling us coffee? We drink it too! How come some truly beautiful normal size women can’t sell the dudes some brewskies? Goodness knows they like to drink them with us! And according to the ads, the only girls that have that time of the month are the stick thin girls in white pants, doing yoga. Why can’t we get used to seeing the occasionally regular sized women next to the skinny girl? How come the only time we see “plus size” women is when they are trying to tell us that we need to lose weight and get on this great diet plan?!

Now I am a big proponent of a healthy lifestyle, and I’m a firm believer that being a plus size model doesn’t give you an excuse to get that second helping of fries; but those of us women who live healthy lifestyles and just happen to be built this way need to grow up feeling like we are beautiful too, and the time is now for that to happen.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Do you have any plan with your loved ones? What does Valentine’s Day mean to you? Whatever you do, the key is thoughtfulness. And make sure to plan ahead. Here are some ideas.

For some, Valentine’s Day means a romantic dinner for two. A home-cooked meal for two, with candles and flowers, will certainly go a long way in winning her heart but if you want to just let your wallet do the work you can choose to take our out to a special dinner for two.

If you happen to be in San Francisco, you can check out Sea View Restaurant (1234 Great Highway, 415731-6648) in the Outer Sunset district. It has a fantastic menu and a great view of the sunset.

In Oakland, Quinn’s Lighthouse‎ (1951 Embarcadero, 510-536-2050) offers a nice view of the marina, good menu, and cozy atmosphere.

Farther south, in Santa Cruz, Crow’s Nest Restaurant‎ (2218 E. Cliff Drive, 831-476-4560) is an old hangout that has good food and an unmatched view of Twin Lakes Beach. Remember that for Valentine’s Day, advanced planning and reservation are essential.

Perhaps you want to give your loved one a shopping trip to the local mall or perhaps you can do the shopping yourself for your loved one. For Valentine’s Day, food, flowers, and candles are popular. Flower delivery to her workplace can put a smile on her for the whole day. On a budget a dozen red roses from Costco or Safeway are easy to pick up if you want to deliver the roses yourself.

For some, Valentine’s Day means cozying up on the couch watching an old romantic movie. Red Box, Netflix, and instant Pay-Per-View bring your favorite movies to the comfort of your home. Among the all-time favorites are Gone with the Wind, Dirty Dancing, Casablanca, Titanic….

Or perhaps you just want a nice long walk at the beach with your loved one, hand-in-hand. In San Francisco, the Great Highway has miles of beach walk and a great view of sunset. In Pacific Grove, a walk along Sunset Drive at sundown is an experience in itself. The road winds around one of the most spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean in Northern California.

Remember, Valentine’s Day means different to different people. Whatever you do, it does not have to be expensive. After all, one of the most precious gifts that you can give is time. So, spend it lavishly, on the people that matter the most to you.

We all love the San Francisco Bay Area, and one of the most amazing things about the Bay Area is the lifestyle it allows us to maintain. BAYFashion Mag - ‘The Supermodel Look’ Fashion Show

Photos: Tim Engle BAYFashion Magazine hosted the finale of their month long contest for a new face in Bay Area modeling - The Supermodel Look Contest on the 4th of Feb 2011 at the Horizon Ultra Lounge in San Francisco, Ca. The contest/fashion show boasted a lineup of 25 models from the BAY Area including the top 10 popular new models selected by the magazine’s fans in a month long contest. The evening consisted of presentations of the latest creations of upcoming fashion designers Anya Zuyeva, Marianne Faulkner (Pop Antique) & Nonal Kouri.

The contestants took to the runway first in the custom looks created for them by their assigned designers.

The eminent panel of judges scoring them consisted of Show Man Charleston Pierce, Fashion Designer Constance Ng, Swimsuit Magnate Julia Ujena and Jessica M Penzari from the Next Miss California USA organization.

The second round of judging took place with the contestants on the Runway sporting BlacMéra evening gowns which left the audience astounded by the extreme couture designs by eminent designer Yuliana Candra. The winner of the evening was Juliana Pfeffer followed by runner up Jenny Allford.

BAYFashion Mag - Usher in the Summer - Bikini Runway

BAYFashion Magazine ushered in summer early this year in typical California style (Look outside) by blazing the runway with 15 really beautiful young women strutting the runway clad in designer swimsuits by San Francisco’s own mega swim suit brand Ujena side by side with Florida’s upcoming couture swimwear designer Piret Bikini’s. The lineup was diverse and had the audience stunned to silence at the beginning followed by loud clapping and cheering for the BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL of the BAY Area.

Fashion - Show StellA & Dot Jewelry

by Workaholic Fashionista Julia Saori Would you think of finding bright summer colors, and a hot show full of fun energy on a night in the middle of January?

It certainly was for Stella & Dot jewelry show that was hosted by a stylist, Tanya Economos in January 18th, 2011. At this private event, beautiful jewelries were displayed, colorful balloon decorations by the red carpet runway that was surrounded by a large crowd of people while upbeat music was played.

I would describe the night in three words, “Summer is here!”

Models rocked the runway with high-energy, all smiles and blowing kisses to the audience. It was definitely flirty yet cute, perfect atmosphere to showcase the latest Spring/Summer 2011 collections of “Stella & Dot” The theme is “Resort, Moroccan and Brazilian.”

They showcased exotic pieces from their line of borrowing from the Boho Chic; gold coins, wooden, chains, layered beads, turquoise, etc.

Outfits were beautifully simple, white summer dress, jeans with white tank top/t-shirt. Something we might normally wear but they brought fresh flavor to it. I feel that the most important part of the outfits were the jewelry showcased by Stella & Dot. They are the “Outfit Makers!”

In the spirit of what BAYFashion Magazine stands for, we decided to bring together promising new faces from the San Francisco Bay with the most promising upcoming designers, stylists & photographers to creat what we called ‘The Suprmodel Look’ for these upconing newbies.

We had over 100 models submit their pictures to us amongst whom we chose 40 to take part in an online voting contest to pick the top 10 aspirants.

The top 10 were then paired with 5 teams of photographers and stylists who worked with an assigned fashion designer to outfit - makeup - shoot these models in what they believed was the best look possible for them.

The Top 2 looks were decided at a grand fashion event in San Francisco at the Horizon Ultra Lounge on Broadway St on the 4th of Feb 2011 where 5 Eminent Judges picked the top 2 looks in a fashion extravaganza which involved over 25 models, 1000 voters, 5 locations, 10 stylists, 5 designers and a crowd of over 200 people.

I met Anya Zuyeva at a fashion event hosted by my dear friend Shaun McClendon in Dec 2010. She was a cute young designer who is a student at the Academy of Arts college in San Francisco, Ca. I looked at the clothes she sent down the runway that evening and I was blown away!

Anya has only recently arrived to the United States but already she has made huge strides in the fashion world. Shaped by a classical Russian education that created the likes of Tchaikovsky, Anya adds a special meaning to word elegance. But elegance alone is insufficient to define Anya’s work.

Attending the Academy of Art University, Anya is surrounded by beauty and is taking the meaning of beauty to a whole new level.

Today’s modern woman is defined by her juxtaposition of sensuality and assertiveness. Anya Zuyeva makes it her business to captures both these qualities. Inspired by everyday’s’ hidden beauty her pieces present a vision of unrequited beauty that simply ooze oooh lala. One look at Anya’s outfits has women blushing and jumping into them and men begging for more.

Nolan Kouri I met Nolan Kouri at a shoot with ace photographer Tim Engle in Sacramento.

They were shooting the super model look feature for BAYFashion magazine featuring 2 of Nolan’s extreme couture outfits.

He is one of the most unassuming and quiet people I have personally met in the industry and his personality exudes cool confidence in his design style. This kid is going places.

He enters the fashion scene with an array of experience and creativity. An honorary student at American River College pursuing a degree in Fashion Design, Nolan is on the verge of combining innovative designs with traditional appeal that are sure to stick in the minds of many.
