UW Hype Train Blows Through Pac-12 Championship Victory!
hen everyone’s favorite football team makes its first 9-0 start since becoming National Champions in 1991, feelings of invincibility are inevitable. Unfortunately, it had to be USC to show Husky nation that its favorite football team can be beaten. For the first time, the hype train that’s been running full speed all season took a serious blow and the road forward lacked clarity. Would we have a chance in the playoffs? Could we miss even the rose bowl? Despite all, the hype train got a fresh burst of steam on November 19th when UW hosted Arizona State. Many senior football players were recognized before the game for the time committed to the program; likewise, senior bandsmen also wore roses and waved goodbye to Husky stadium in their last performance at home. As UW wrapped up another victory on Montlake, the fans put on a different kind of show: hundreds of phone flashlights came out during the second half to glimmer and twinkle throughout the crowd. With 10-1 under their belts, the
Dawgs headed to a small college town in the middle of wheat fields and bare hills to face off against WSU the biggest culture rivalry on the west coast – the Apple Cup. Both teams knew that the winner would play in the conference championship, but only one team came out on top. UW finished the regular season 11-1 and seniors at the University of Washington still haven’t experienced a loss to their rival next door. A trip to California brought the Huskies their highest ranked opponent yet, the No. 9 Colorado Buffaloes. Media everywhere had one simple phrase to offer to UW: “Win and you’re in.” The rise was real in Colorado, finishing their best year since joining the conference. The rise could not stop the Husky hype train
though, which rolled over the Buffs en route to UW’s first conference championship since the championship game has existed. This New Year’s Eve, the Dawgs travel to Georgia and the Peach Bowl to face college football’s goliath and #1 ranked team in the Alabama Crimson Tide. While this task seems daunting, it’s a great time to reflect on the year. 12 months ago, the team finished a 6-6 regular season and prepared for a minor bowl game against Southern Mississippi. Preseason media pegged UW to rise, but not for another year. That this team has made the accomplishments it has in a short time should leave any Dawg fan satisfied with its impressive 12-1 season, no matter where the hype train finally comes to rest.
