Message from the Manager Welcome baseball fans to the Red Wing Athletic Field. What a great place to take in outdoor baseball and cheer on your hometown baseball team. I hope you have a great time soaking in the sun and watching Aces Baseball! Red Wing is rich in baseball tradition and we hope to continue that tradition with providing great entertainment for you and your family. Speaking of rich tradition, when you are at the ballpark please grab a Red Wing Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame application and nominate someone who has had a positive impact on Red Wing Baseball whether as a player, coach, or volunteer. The 2009 Aces season should be exciting and provide a lot of wins along the way. The Aces return much of the same group from last year’s team which went 30-10 during the regular season. It was the Aces best regular season since 1990. This is a great group of players who love the game of baseball and want to give you, the fans, something to cheer about! Don’t forget to sign up at the Concession Stand for the chance to win many different prizes at each and every home game as we have had great support from local businesses who also want to be a part of the 2009 Red Wing Aces season. The Aces players and Board of Directors would like to thank all of the sponsors who have made Aces baseball what it is today and hope their support continues in the future. Thanks again for your attendance and enjoy the game! Corey Corey Tauer Red Wing Aces Manager

After playing in Eau Claire and Mankato for a combined 4 seasons (03-06), Jimmy has become a force in the middle of the Aces lineup. A two-time All State Tournament selection he hit .343 in ’08 and also led the team in RBI. “Bomber” is a very dedicated player and has led the team in games played the past two seasons. Jimmy played many positions on the field last year, which included a “closer” appearance on the mound as he earned a save against the Fox Lake Foxes in June.

He posted a 2.99 ERA and has been relied upon to be a very consistent starter for the Aces. “Gibby” has 56 career wins which puts him 3rd on the Aces all-time list. Andy and his wife Brita live in Farmington and have one son Brodie and are expecting their second child this June.

Page 13 • Aces Baseball 2009

23 — Paul Hartmann Bats: Right • Throws: Right • Season with Aces: 13th Paul returns this season after missing most of last season due to coaching the Hastings VFW team. Paul continues to be one of the premier defensive catchers in the state of Minnesota. His arm strength behind the plate can stop most teams’ running game and help a pitcher get out of a jam. “Harty” has nearly 400 hits in his Aces career and provides great leadership. Paul and his wife Stacy have one son Reid and were expecting their second child at the end of April.

1 — Kyle Blahnik Bats: Right • Throws: Right • Season with Aces: 5th Kyle had a successful ’08 campaign hitting .333. Kyle is a great contact hitter who rarely strikes out. “Blondies” highlight last season was when he tied an Aces record going for 6 for 6 in one game. Kyle will play both SS and 1B for the Aces this summer. Kyle was an All-Tournament selection during the 2006 State Tournament when the Aces last hosted the tournament and finished 4th.

44 — Zach Laffey Bats: Left • Throws: Left • Season with Aces: 5th Zach hit .333 last season with the Aces and provided many big hits for the team as he finished fourth on the team in RBI. Look for Zach to provide more power this summer to the Aces lineup as his double and HR total should increase. Look for Zach to get more time on the mound this summer as he is a hard-throwing left-hander who will be an asset to the Aces in the bullpen. Zach has been an offensive force in college the past two seasons playing with the North Park, IL Vikings out of Chicago. Photo Courtesy of the Republican Eagle

12 — Cory Thorson Bats: Right • Throws: Left • Season with Aces: 1st Cory is making a comeback to baseball this season with the Aces. After attending a game in 2008 Cory loved the atmosphere up at the “Ath” and got the “itch” to play again. Cory may be one of the better athletes on the team and will look to compete for time in the outfield. Cory was a Division I player at Northern Iowa in the mid 90’s. He handles the bat very well and will add some speed to the lineup. Cory and his wife Tara have three kids Elle, Cadence, and Mayzee.

42 — Aaron Johnson Bats: Left • Throws: Left • Season with Aces: 2nd Aaron is a hard-throwing left-hander who has great potential to compete at a high level. Aaron had an elbow injury in a game at Hampton in May which ended his season. He had Tommy John surgery this past offseason and is working hard at rehabilitating and is anxious to get back on the mound. Aaron will be missed this summer as he has the ability to dominate opponents at times. Good luck to Aaron in his comeback.

FINE IN 09? ACES LOOK TO CLIMB THE LADDER by Jack Colwell • Sports Director KCUE/KWNG Radio The 2008 season for the Red Wing Aces was like a great movie with a bad ending. The Aces won their annual Dewey Tauer Tournament, rolled to their best regular season record since 2001 at 30-10 and then...an 0-2 barbeque in the Section 1 playoffs with losses to arch-rivals Miesville and Dundas at Memorial Park. Season over. This year the Aces hope to get over that section hump and into the state amateur baseball tournament for the first time in 3 seasons. Corey Tauer returns for his 19th season and 7th as player/manager. Corey went over the 1000 hit mark in his career against Cannon Falls late last season. With 1003 career hits he needs 17 to pass older brother Jay and move into the #2 spot on the all-time list behind Jay Bohmbach. Tauer is also #3 on the career home run list, #2 in rbis and #1 in doubles. Corey’s numbers would be even higher without the “wood bat era” in amateur baseball which came about a few seasons ago. Dan Plein is back for his 20th year as the bench coach. Wearing his familiar #8, “Yogi” adds a steady hand to Corey Tauer in guiding the Aces ship every summer. Veteran catcher Paul Hartmann returns for his 13th year and is still among the best backstops in the CCVL. The Aces have a core of players in their prime including Steve Boldt, Chris Guetzlaff, Jimmy Bohmbach, Kyle Blahnik, Tyler Goering, Andy Schilling, Zach Laffey and Dave Jenson. You can toss the LaRue boys, Brandon and Dustin, into that mix too. The La Rue boys combined for 11 wins on the mound and both hit over .300 in their first year with the Aces last season. The Aces pitching staff is led by veteran southpaws Andy Gibart and Josh Thygesen. “Gibby” posted an 8-3 record last year and

his 56 career wins rank 3rd on the Aces alltime list. “Thygy” had 5 wins and like Gibart, had an ERA right around 3.00. The LaRues, along with Jordan Warren, Augie Lindmark, Steve Boldt and Tyler Goering should eat up most of the other mound time. Aaron Johnson is recovering from Tommy John surgery but can be another force on the mound when healthy. The Aces have many new faces in ‘09. Cory Thorson, Chris Larson, Hayden Flack, Jake Laffey, Blake Schammel and Luke Halvorson will all get their chances to contribute. Two big highlights of the schedule this year: #1-The Dewey Tauer tournament over Father’s Day weekend features 8 CCVL teams, a first, adding extra local fire to a hot weekend of baseball. #2-The Aces host the annual CCVL vs. Cannon Valley League All-Star game at 8pm on July 8th. The CCVL regular season is a meatgrinder but it gets even tougher in the section playoffs. The Aces know regular season success can be wiped out quickly in the playoffs. There is no doubt the Aces are on a mission to parlay another great regular season into a successful run to the state tourney. It’s been 16 years since the Aces last won a state title. Let’s see if they can make a run at it this season! Thanks for coming out to “The Ath” and supporting Aces baseball. A great season awaits. It’s hard to believe this is my 10th summer covering Aces baseball with a great lineup of games on Bluff Country 1250 KCUE. We’re also on the web at www.1250kcue.com with Aces broadcasts. See you at the ballpark!

40 — Luke Halvorson Bats: Right • Throws: Right • Season with Aces: 1st Luke joins the Aces and will try and fill a need in the bullpen. Luke is a hard-throwing right hander with a very good changeup. Luke is a physical specimen who has the tools to be very successful. He will need to concentrate on getting ahead of hitters and the Aces are hoping he is someone they can count on late in games. Look for Luke to get better as the year goes on. Luke is the son of former Aces great Dan Halvorson who played with the Aces from 1975-1981. Luke graduated from Red Wing High School in 2008.

The RWYBA Looks Forward to Another Successful Season in 2009. The Red Wing Youth Baseball Association (RWYBA) is excited to once again have over 180 players (15 teams), ages 9 through 15, participating in our program for the 2009 season! Our Mission is “to provide opportunities for Red Wing youth to participate in a structured setting of competitive baseball whereby each player is encouraged to learn the physical, mental, and social skills which are associated with participation in team sports activities”. Our successful Prep Program for 9 & 10 year-olds will again field 5 teams this summer. The program has a heavy emphasis on fundamentals and has proven to be an excellent introduction to competitive baseball for our younger players. This year our 10 year olds will compete in two traveling tournaments in addition to their in-house games and tournaments as they prepare for what lies ahead at age 11. This summer we will have a total of 10 traveling teams for ages 11 thru 15 - we will field 2 equal AA teams at ages 11, 12, and 13, at age 14 we have one AAA team and one A team, and at age 15 we have one

AAA team. All of our traveling teams participate in the Metro Baseball League (MBL) playing teams primarily in the southern and eastern Metro areas. Including tournaments, these teams will each play on average anywhere from 26 to 40 games this summer. Everyone involved with the RWYBA greatly appreciates the strong bond we have with the Red Wing Aces. We work together on fund-raising activities and the Aces assist the RWYBA each year during our Spring Tryout event. During the season RWYBA volunteers will be assisting the Aces as well, as they make their way toward another state tournament appearance. Also look for many of our youth teams to be out on the field with the Aces this Summer participating in pre-game and middle-inning activities. Keep an eye on these young baseball players, because they will be your future Red Wing Aces! On behalf of the RWYBA Board of Directors - Enjoy this 2009 season! Go Aces!
