Valga zoning | Breaking borders

About: The work consists of survey, conduction among local residents, comprehensive analysis of Valga and Valka towns and data / emotions collected during numerous visits to the towns. We had to divide two cities into zones by the different characteristics and recreational possibilities. This work lead to the creation of strategic visions on potential development and possibilities for the future.

Concept: First we divided the city into different parts: Green areas, residential areas, railway and industrial area, to simplify the city structure for the next parts. Next we realised that when moving from one residential

area to another, one always has to cross the country border area, railway or some industrial region/ zone. To change such situation now was to break the so-called brown sectors with green areas, this way moving from one place to another would be pleasant. Another important part of our work was to move by the green belt, for that the before not working country border was to become one of the best features to unite the different green areas. As a third part of our work we added some recreation zones to the city outskirts, which would be on the same distance from the centre. This way, Valga/ Valka will be better united by recreational structure.

About: Every student had to choose an area from the zoning plan and design it according to the SWOT analysis carried out by the group for the whole zoning plan. This work was done within a week.

Concept: The centre of Valga is similar to the structure of a ‘Hamburger’ - different land uses are layered like the ingredients used in it. Centre green structure consists of many different parks, which are cut into parts by the roads. Parks should form one long structure like other land uses, not to be cut into pieces with roads. It would help a lot to move from one centre

part to another through the parks without being disturbed by cars. Some streets are small enough to not have a big impact in scattering be cut through from the middle leaving enough parking space for inhabitant’s cars nearby the houses. From one side of the zone to another there is a walking path, which divides the area into different sport and leisure zones. According to the action, it has been divided into different theme parks, which are designed differently from the road connecting one side with the other. In the east, the area connects with the zone number 2. It helps to change the centre into a more combined structure.

Conclusion The project was made during the course „Design of public space“ in the academic year of 2010/2011. In the first semester we had to work with the A. Le Coq beer factory. The aim was to create a design project based on a specific scenario: Because of political decisions at Brussels the real estate market is suffering severely. Tartu city council decides to develop a cheap simple public park at the area in the sense of a social project for the neighboring people. The bachelor projects idea was to bring forth the design methods to the next area, which is the A. Haava streets empty plot. The aim of this project is to create an environment that considers the present situation and its conditions, fits into the surroundings and is altogether well functioning. In the beer factory my main idea was multifunctional use. Using houses differently depending on the season. Making closed areas easily to pass and more attractive to surrounding people. Mixing this way, by mixing the interests and functions of the area, it will give more usability at all times. The bachelor project area was quite different from the beer factory area by topography and size, but the idea of making it multifunctional

still suits best. This district of the city does not have much green areas and the territory nearby has many high usable routes. It can be seen on the analysis that there is a need for a public park. Moving from one place to another people have developed certain routes that they are very familiar with. It is difficult to change those routes completely, but once changed they will offer more interest while functioning better by offering a variety of activities and resting opportunities between the areas. Thus, my idea is the link that will be connecting other links and by doing so it will strengthen the whole complex. I decided that the area should have a marketplace, a pub with dining opportunities, also facilities for studying ad resting. Beside that it would be a good place for arranging different kind of events. In the areas design there is the shape

of the section of the tree symbolizing nearby old houses. In the centre there will be a stage for the events. The rest of the area/territory is divided into smaller parts where grass is grown. Is it easy to arrange events by simply dividing them into different areas as this whole structure blends well with the area and offers an over-all good milieu. Throughout the area there are mainly fruit trees and bushes planted in memory of Estonian politician Jaan Tþnisson’s market garden. They are planned to be planted that the area will have a third dimension, also emphasizing the volumes and structure of the area. To sum it up, the public park will be turning the area into something more attractive. Location in Google Maps Download Bachelors work

Cycle rent Being connected with the other cycle rent systems all over Tartu, it gives the area more mobility and users as well as an opportunity to leave your own bike under the cover do not get wet. Other rental places are all over the city and the distance between them is around 200-900m. As Tartu is the “spirit town“ of Estonia the system can be used by a lot of students.

Benches In the area there are two different kinds of benches. First, there are easily movable benches with a big variety of colors. They can also be used with backrest or without. These are made of plastic and filled with water so that the wind will not blow them away. The other benches are on the edges of the park to give rest to people who are using the park and privacy to people who live on the other side of the park.

Plants Flowers are in the easily movable pots, for instance when there is an event coming up and more space is needed. On the left scheme one can see how the trees are planted in the paving. Most of the trees used are fruit trees, because in former times this area was used for growing apples. The park does not only offer place to hang around, it also offers mouthfu). Fruits in this area become ripe during different times giving digestion during the whole year.

LINK | Kiosk design

Kiosk A multifunctional kiosk was needed for the different utilization to meet the demand for the different events. This kiosk had to be simple enough to keep in the storage house. All the construction is made of iron and the plates from plywood. The amount of different pieces is taken to the minimum, so that it won’t take too much room when storing it. Also they can be used in different ways. For instance, side panel can be used as a table plate. It can be built from all the sides closed until all are open. On the sides there can be tables installed. for eating or some shelves for selling stuff. You can see some versions displayed on the pictures.

M채nniku Gravel pit design

About the pit The Männiku gravel pit is owned by a private company and it needed a plan how to design it afterwards when the digging will end. We got a keyword “great bang” and had to create a recreation area. First we made a plan how the landscape changes and calculated how much land will be dug out from this pit. Then a design of the tracks and facilities was made and a third step for this area it was necessary to find out the best plants for the gravel pit and come up with a maintenance plan. THE PROGRAM 1. Analysis of the area and usuage 2. Evaluation the needs for changes (moving, changing, adding or removing the elements) 3. Usuage and the character of area will (may) therefore change 4. Move to step one.

ARTIFICIAL

DE S I G N

The very first change will be creating an provocative area/structure/furniture which users can change by themselves, creating temporary-improvised usuages. Later the changes made by users combined to the needed changes proposed by specialist(s) will be created on the structure (which must support simple changing). Analysis: After simulating the near future possible usuages, we found out in which places which events could possibly take place, and by doing so we found out some more active spots in the area. Design: We created platforms on which different activities can take place. Also “bridges” as roads between platfroms which can be connected to different platforms for different needs. Future: People will use the platforms for different events and restructure the roads according to whatever different needs, making the place their own and giving hints for future developments.

Artificial is everything that human has affected. Also it can be understood as a copy, fake. One way of grading artificialness of different areas is to evaluate its need of maintenance, the higher the need, the more artificial the area. Since nature doesn’t need interruption by

What’s your artificial?

human for its own sake. High maintenance costs a lot, is not resource efficient and is unsustainable – that’s everything that’s not desired for a project to work. So we want to create area that can look artificial, but in core self maintains as a proper ecosystem (seasonal, adapting, changing,

evolving…). For an ecosystem to work the planned end result is not required, rather, it distracts. So we do not know what this area will look like in 100, 20 or even 10 years. But we know it will function properly. So for this to work, more important than a plan (map) is a program.

A letter came from Moscow government to the city government of Chernyakhovsk, stating they will donate about 60 000 trees to the city to make it more beautiful. The size, age, spices or quality of these plants were unknown. We replied to this challenge with the concept of temporary nurseries, which are applied directly on the streets of the city. The trees are planted by active citizens of Chernyakhovsk, coming from tree nurseries. Plants are only brought to their proper destination places, if its growth allows it (1m high diameter 10-12cm). Those places can be former residential areas: the trees, growing out of the ruins, would connect the past with the future. The general aim was more than just sticking thousands of trees into the ground and letting them grow, but to resurrect them through

a relationship between the residents and their city, the missing link between past and future. The city is divided into five different districts, where the trees will be planted. On the map tree nurseries are marked with yellow and the places where trees will be planted are marked with green. Fourth district Nurseries will be taking the place of formerly destroyed houses. The trees on the edge of nurseries will be kept to stress the old structure of the houses.

Fifth district As for the historical park, it is important to invite visitors to the park. The green gates of I Chernyakhovsk are planned at the four main entrances to the city alleys.

Igas tavalises Euroopa metsas on üks tavaline HYTT, mis Ait oli lihtne üheruumiline sümboliseerib 18. palkhoone, millel oli ukseavas auk sajandil olnud kasside jaoks. Aida ees oli katusealune. eestlaste aita. Ait oli vana talukompleksi asendamatu abihoone.

AIT 18

saj.

Hüti funktsioon on muudetud säilitamise ruumist olemise ruumiks, mistõttu on vaja lihtsasse ruumi rohkem valgust. Valguse ja avruse toovad ruumi suured värvilised hulknurksed aknad. Hütt täidab Luua Metsanduskooli abihoone funktsioone, kus on võimalik viia läbi õuesõpet ja piknikku.

HYTT 21

saj.

Hytt on aida moderne vorm. Kasutatud on traditsioonilisi materjale- vanailmelisi palke ja laastukatust. Kassiaugust on saanud avatud ukseosa, mis seob väljasolevat terassi hubase siseruumiga. Fassaadis kasutatud hall vana päikesepleegitatud ilmega puit ning roheline klaas sulanduvad hästi ümbritsevasse harmoonilisse looduskeskkonda, mistõttu ei näi paviljon eraldiseisva võõrkehana, vaid tundub nagu oleks seal kogu aeg olnud. Maja on metsaga üks.

Kala serveerida koos seenehautisega, kõrvale pakkuda praetud kartuleid.

Mida teha seentega My grandmother who writes books about cooking asked me to make a layout of the book and edit it. This book is about mushrooms and what to do with them. This was my first book to edit and it took about four days from the beginning to the end. It was good chance to improve and show my graphical skills also in another field. 3000 copies of it were printed out.

Edited book
