Club Meeting | June 18th, 2014 El Presidente called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM. Tina Banes patriotically led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Officer Robert Barba led the patriotic song; “God Bless America”. Susan Jacklin delivered an inspirational invocation. Club members in attendance were Dave W, Kathy Young, Victoria Davidson, Jim Stewart, David Malkin, Charlie Huff, Grace Chan, Robert Barba, Tina Banes, Susan Jacklin, Anna Wu, and Stepha-

nie Hu. It was Stephanie’s first club meeting as a member, as we all welcomed her, and she introduced her guest Jacqueline Lu, a former Key Club member from Diamond Bar High School. Anna Wu introduced her bundle of joy, Kyra, our youngest guest. Susan Jacklin led us in our “Welcome Song”, as we made our guests feel at home. David Malkin very efficiently sold the “Split the Pot” tickets, our guest Jacqueline Lu

pulled the winning ticket declaring, a excited and surprised, David Malkin as the winner of $80.00 Kiwanis Dollars ($8.00). Yes Lon & Izzey’s winning streak finally came to an end. Let’s see if their luck returns next week. Charlie Huff performed the pin & badge checks, and helped collect cans for Del Haven. Kathy Young circulated the donation cans. We collected $3.00 for Relay for Life, $2.00 for Children’s Hospital, and

$13.00 for ELIMINATE. A total of $17.00 was contributed by generous members for Happy/Sad dollars. We did not have a Mr. K or Mrs. K so everyone was declared to be friendly. El Presidente rang the bell at 6:40 PM, at which time the meeting was adjourned as we sang “Hail to Kiwanis”. This was perhaps the shortest meeting we have had all year. Thank You to all our members and guests in attendance.

Adopt-A-Highway June 21, 2014 By Lon Salgren We had a good turnout of Kiwanis members and adult volunteers to complete our AAH this past Saturday. On hand were Ted Strinz, Grace Chan, Jim Stewart, Mahmood Bashir, Xiao Wang, Kathy Young and myself. Our SLP youth had one thing in common. They were all from Glen A Wilson. Led by Immediate Past Key Club President Firuze Barimani, other Key Clubbers included Crystal Espinosa, Andrea Hu and Marsha Lee. Glen A Wilson KIWIN'S was represented by Sophia Uemera, Sabrina Yang, Olivia Tang and Jodi Yip. The quality of the photos will be much better than usual since Xiao volunteered to be our paparazzi and drive around to capture all the teams in action. It was perfect weather, not too hot and there was a good breeze for us to enjoy as we cleaned Colima. My team gathered 376 cigarette butts from the Dawn Haven to Azusa portion of Colima and back. Thanks to everyone and especially the youth for spending a few hours of their early Summer helping to keep our community of Hacienda Heights clean.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FAIR AT SCHABARUM PARK Understanding that emergencies and disasters can happen at any moment, Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe invited residents to learn valuable life-saving skills at a free community emergency preparedness fair held Saturday June 21 at Schabarum Regional Park in Rowland Heights. “We live in a region that is susceptible to fires and earthquakes, and residents must be prudent in ensuring they are ready in case of an emergency,” said Supervisor Knabe. He further encouraged all residents to attend the event and emphasized the importance of having a plan for getting out of harm’s way.” The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, CHP, Office of Emergency Management, Animal Care & Control, Public Works, Public Health, Red Cross and many more organizations were there to demonstrate life-saving techniques, like CPR, and provide informational handouts. A representative from Cal Tech, Margaret Vinci delivered a keynote address on earthquake preparation in southern California. Fair attendees also had the opportunity to purchase emergency equipment and supplies, including first aid kits, water, food, and generators. Our club members who attended the event were President Mahmood Bashir, Grace Chan & husband Stephen, Anna Wu & baby Kyra.

KIWIN’S Goldstone Banquet By Sylvia Kwon, KIWIN’S District Secretary It was a night to celebrate the successes of all the amazing members and clubs. It was a night to take fancy pictures in our fancy clothes because we were in a fancy unforgettable setting. It was a night to say goodbye to our senior family, but agreeing to stay in touch. It was a night to retire the past and install the new, excited for the upcoming year. It was—a night to stand proud as a Goldstone gator for all we have accomplished, and create yet again a new memory to patch into our lives. This was my first KIWIN’S Goldstone banquet that I have attended and I only anticipated the fun, rather than realizing it was actually going to be a very sweet but sentimental night. We all had an amazing time as we had expected, reuniting with the other schools within our division and taking a countless number of photos to keep for memory. Dinner was amazing— well you can never go wrong with tacos, and the upbeat music that the DJ played was so fitting for the event. In addition, special guests had visited our banquet such as Crystal Division’s IP LTG Stacy Ahn, and present LTG David Moon, past Goldstone LTG’s Nicole Dizon & Maegan Enverga, and our 2012 District Governor, Bernadette Lim. When it was time for awards, we were all eagerly waiting to hear a member from our own schools to be awarded so we could cheer out their names. It was a truly great sight to see members who really stood out in the year , and being congratulated for their great effort and driving passion for KIWIN’S. One of the awards, the Most Passionate Award, went to Wilson’s very own Sophia Uemura and it made me smile because I knew she deserved it with her service and unique KIWIN’S spirit. Other members were called up and we all cheered them on with yells and claps, being so proud of our Goldstone familia.
