CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF VOLVO

2027

The Volvo Group is a Swedish multinational manufacturing company headquartered in Gothenburg.Volvo has long been known for building exceptionally safe, dependable cars. It makes both passenger and commercial vehicles. The name Volvo is derived from swedish language and it means ‘I roll’. Volvo Concept XC100 is a car for people with active lifestyle. It is an interpretation of the XC series cars in the year 2027 which also celebrates 100 years of Volvo. The brand philosophy of Volvo always revolves around the people, their safety and their lifestyle and this concept tries to touch upon all this points.

SUMMER

BREKENRIDGE, COLORADO, USA Breckenridge is a Colorado town at the base of the Rocky Mountains’ Tenmile Range. It’s known for its ski resort, year-round alpine activities and Gold Rush history. Since ski trails were first cut in 1961, Breckenridge Ski Resort has made the town a popular destination for skiers. Summer in Breckenridge attracts outdoor enthusiasts with hiking trails, wildflowers, fly-fishing in the Blue River, mountain biking, boating, white water rafting and three alpine slides The town also has many part-time residents, as many people have vacation homes in the area. Most of the families living here are nuclear families.

IDEATION PROCESS

KEY SKETCHES

The concept development started with looking into the needs of the people who are involved into adventure sports, mainly focusing on Mountain Biking and Skiing. The package is based on the average size of the family using the vehicle and the kind of things they would need to carry.

FEATURES & FUNCTIONALITY The toolbox is placed under the hood which ia a possibility provided by the use of wheel hub motors. The toolbox contains tools and equipments to fix bikes and the car.

SKI-BOX & LUGGAGE

MOUNTAIN BIKES

The trunk offers a solution to have different modules for different seasons and uses. With the bike rack module it is possible to carry up to 3 bikes which is customized according to the specified sizes of the bikes. The bike rack module can be replaced with a Ski-Box module during winters and these are just some of the possibilities that this flexible trunk has to offer.

The doors are sliding suicide doors which opens with a part of the roof, providing easy access for the driver and also to the luggage space behind the passenger seats.

FINAL DESIGN

PACKAGE 1660 mm

The Vehicle has central driving position which allows for a more focused driving experience. It also allows the rear seats to be placed further forward compared to a regular four seater. This creates space for 3 bikes to easily fit in the boot. The dimensions of the vehicle are very close to the decently sized Volvo XC60.

WHEEL HUB MOTORS The back of the car uses a lot of glass which speaks about the user and his personality by the kind of things he is carrying. The horizontal lines and the spaced out VOLVO text emphasizes the space in the trunk and the width of the vehicle.

The grill has been replaced with a toolbox as it is not required in an electric vehicle. Air vents are placed at the bottom to cool the batteries placed in the floor of the vehicle.

PLASTIC IN THE OCEANS

PLASTIC OCEANS

WILD LIFE

Oceans around the world are littered with millions of tons of Plastic waste. This is leading to a situation where the ocean ecosystem is being disrupted in a major way. All this plastic waste will stay there forever unless someone finds a way to use it.

Organisations like Parley and The Ocean Cleanup Project are working on collecting and finding ways to recycle and reuse the ocena plastic waste. The idea here is to show the potential of a collaboration between BMW Mini and organisations mentioned above.

SOFT PARTS

3D PRINTED & INJECTION MOLDED

HARD PARTS The plastic is both 3D printed and woven to form both hard and soft parts. The 3D printed parts are printed directly on the assembled frame to create a one step manufacturing process

IDEATION The idea here was to take inspiration from the landscapes created by the corals in the ocean and also to integrate different functionalities like HVAC, Entertaintment and lighting in the shapes created. As 3D printing is being used to create the shapes, it allows to reduce the number of components and simplify manufacturing process.

Coral reefs are the metropolis of the oceans. Corals come in many forms, sizes and colours and give shelter to an amazing variety of ocean life.

EUROTRANS Mercedes-Benz is a global automobile marque and a division of the German company Daimler AG. Mercedes-Benz traces its origins to Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft’s 1901 Mercedes and Karl Benz’s 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which is widely regarded as the first gasoline-powered automobile. In the 1980s, Mercedes built the world’s first robot car, together with the team of Professor Ernst Dickmanns at Bundeswehr University Munich. Encouraged in part by Dickmanns’ success, in 1987 the European Union’s EUREKA programme initiated the Prometheus Project on autonomous vehicles, funded to the tune of nearly €800 million.

FUTURE HIGHWAYS

ELECTRIC

Decades ago people had believed that cars in the future will be able to drive themselves and they will have tme in the vehicle to engage in other activities. That future is slowly coming true with autonomous cars are becoming a reality today.

WHAT WOULD A HIGHWAY SHUTTLE SERVICE WITH LEVEL 5 AUTONOMY LOOK LIKE?

The Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T) are a planned set of road, rail, air and water transport networks in the European Union. The TEN-T networks are part of a wider system of TransEuropean Networks (TENs), including a telecommunications network (eTEN) and a proposed energy network (TEN-E or TenEnergy). The European Commission adopted the first action plans on trans-European networks in 1990.

SOLID STATE BATTERIES

LEVEL-5 SELF DRIVING

Automakers using solid-state batteries will be able to increase the range of electric cars without having to make battery packs bigger. Solid-state electrolytes are also expected to be nonflammable, unlike current lithium-ion batteries.

An autonomous car (also known as a driverless car, self-driving car, robotic car) and unmanned ground vehicle is a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input.

Mercedes has always been experimenting with the aerodynamic efficiency of their vehicles and have also gained a lot of knowledge from taking part in different types races including Group C and F1.

The first theme explored is based on the current breed of Electric and Autonomous Mercedes concepts in the last couple of years. Surfaces are defined by reflections and highlights rather than feature lines.

The outer skin helps to guide the air in the most efficient way possible around the core glass body. The long and narrow shape and a Kammback design for greater drag reduction.

KEY SKETCHES In the final direction, which is a evolution of the second theme, the glass roof dips down almost to the floor in the front. The nose is covered by the hood which acts as the front downforce generator and also helps to guide the wind around the sides.

FINAL DESIGN

AERODYNAMIC CAPABILITIES A lot of Aerodynamic design has gone in making this car as slippery and efficient as possible. The streamlined silhouette and long, narrow body results in low drag coefficient. Front wheels are Aero Wheel Shrouds, remminiscent of old F1 cars, the fins also act as a suction for air to cool down the batteries and the brakes. Covered Rear wheel cap allows for a smooth Airflow around the vehicle.

Concept Eurotrans is a highspeed, first class service shuttle service which provides better coverage and privacy compared to highspeed rails for intercity travel in the future.

LONG NARROW STREAMLINED The opening under the nose forms a Venturi Tunnel which opens at the rear diffusor. There are active flaps under the vehicle which controls the amount of airflow required in different driving situations.

Being a Level 5 Autonomous vehicle, the car is safe and needs less structural elements for safety. The central spine is the main structural element of the vehicle made with CRPF which allows it to be strong yet lightweight. The structure also creates an interesting graphic element which can be unique to these kind of vehicles.

Ethos represents a fine balance between sensual and precision surfacing. The speedform shown below will work as a guideline for the designers creating cars for the Ethos brand.

FORM WORKSHOP

The TECHNO-FLUIDIC design language is an experiment in inciting emotions of love, trust and wonder. The design language has evolved from various experiments done with paper folding techniques and watercolour.

In this project, the brief was to create your own brand and create a unique design language for the brand based on the values that represents the philosophy of that brand.

IDEATION SKETCHES

The sculpture tries to create harmony between two very contrasting ideas. The form created is an amalgamation of the top red core which is inpired by the behavior of liquids and the lower metallic part which encompasses the red core with a contrasting, sharp design language inspired by paper folding techniques. The folds in the very technical metallic surfaces reveals the soft red surfaces creating a sense of curiosity.

MODEL MAKING (1:6 SCALE)

In this Module we had to take an existing product and make a replica of it which is either scaled up or scaled down. The model seen here is a scaled down replica of a Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster. A die-cast model of the same was used as a reference to make the model. Different manufacturing techniques and materials like MDF, Polystyrene, Acrylic and 3D printing was used to make the model.

TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

NATURE AND FORM The brief of this module was to get inspired form nature and design a product that reflects the attributes of the selected creature. The inspiration for the shoes designed here was a wild cat called a Caracal.

The shoe designed here is inspired by the athletic and dynamic character of a Caracal. It has a specially designed sole which is capable of absorbing and reducing the impact caused by jumping and running during Parkour.

FOR PARKOUR

A Caracal is capable of jumping almost 10 feet in the air and their paws have evolved to absorb the impact upn landing. What if Puma designs a parkour shoe inpired by a Caracal? How would it look and perform?
