FOR DISCERNING TRAVELLERS

4 WATERLOO COURT • 10 THEED STREET • LONDON SE1 8ST Tel: 020 7593 2288 • Fax: 020 4593 1461 • travel@kirkerholidays.com • www.kirkerholidays.com

Thank you for your interest in our brochure for tailor-made holidays to Spain. There is no doubt that this is one of the great cultural destinations of Europe – home to the magnificent cities of Seville, Barcelona and Madrid, and an astonishing variety of relaxed rural and coastal regions. As anyone who has visited this great country will tell you, Spanish hospitality is legendary with the next delicious glass of ‘vino tinto’ and tapas never too far away. Spain also offers a great climate, a fascinating history including a very Moorish North African twist, and a wonderfully diverse range of gastronomy, music, opera, art and architecture – all of which are perfect ingredients for a great short break. Mainland Spain covers a vast spectrum of landscapes and culture from Santiago and the Basque country in the north, to Barcelona and Catalunya in the east, to Seville and Andalucia in the south, not forgetting the magnificent capital Madrid in the heart of the country, surrounded by many fascinating smaller but significant cities such as Toledo (El Greco’s home city), Avila and Segovia. We also highly recommend the charming parador hotels throughout the country which are often housed in magnificent historical buildings in prominent positions. Each region has its own distinct local culture and cuisine, not to mention some outstanding wines, such as the renowned Ribera del Duero and Rioja regions. In fact the ascendance of Spanish wines over the last 20 years is indicative of the rise of every aspect of what the country has to offer in its post Franco era. In addition to the mainland, Spain also offers some of the best European holiday islands which are perfect for spring, summer and autumn; Mallorca in the Mediterranean, and Tenerife and La Gomera in the Atlantic. Although well known as tourist destinations, there is surprisingly, so much for the discerning traveller to explore in terms of culture and unspoilt landscapes. Few destinations can compete with Spain’s 21st century range of contemporary art and architecture, not to mention the brilliant cooking of their top chefs (ask the Kirker Concierge to book you a table at a recommended restaurant) and the state-of-the-art high speed AVE trains linking Seville to Madrid in only two and a half hours, and Barcelona to Madrid in just over three, making twin-centre holidays relaxing and hassle-free. All our holidays include private car transfers, but for those on longer itineraries, we can include car hire and would certainly recommend this in Andalucia where many of the smaller towns are slightly off the beaten track and best explored by road. As well as the art of Picasso, Gaudi, Dali and Miro, Spain offers visitors that wonderful blend of world class classical and contemporary culture in museums such as Madrid’s Prado (complimentary tickets included for all Kirker clients) and Reina Sofia museums. We also highly recommend booking one of our expert guides for a private walking tour on the first morning of your holiday – it is a great treat and will add significantly to your enjoyment – just ask our concierge for details at the time of booking. There has never been a better time to visit Spain, so please don’t hesitate to contact us for further details where one of our experts will be delighted to help. We very much look forward to hearing from you.

Rocamar, Cadaques

Located just over an hour by car from Barcelona and 30 minutes from the beaches and coastal villages of the Costa Brava, Girona is a charming mediaeval city which is well worth a visit on a short break or as part of a longer itinerary around Catalunya. Its strategic position has been coveted for centuries; so much so that it became known as the ‘city of a thousand sieges’.The old town and Jewish Quarter with its atmospheric narrow streets are a delight as are the cathedral, the Romanesque monastery, the Gothic church of Sant Feliu, the Arabian Baths and the houses along the River Onyar. Llegendes de Catedral

Superior

The charming old town of Girona can easily be explored from the Llegendes de Catedral, a small and attractive hotel located a few steps from the Gothic cathedral and the river. Its façade is traditional and contrasts with the interiors which are stylish and contemporary. There are 15 bedrooms in the main hotel and two apartments sleeping up to seven people in a 14th century building a few steps from the hotel. The apartments are traditionally furnished and are ideal for families – further details available on request. 3 night price from £678 per person.

Cadaques, with its attractive whitewashed houses, is one of our favourite towns on the Costa Brava and has a delightful seaside setting enclosed by mountains. The arrival of a host of contemporary artists, most famously Dali and Picasso, turned what was a humble fishing village into a fashionable resort in the 1920s. Its galleries, seafood restaurants and the creeks of Cap de Creus continue to attract many visitors, especially in the peak summer months. The Rocamar is situated in a tranquil position, 800 metres from the town and within a large park that leads to two beaches. It has 73 simple but stylishly furnished bedrooms. Facilities include a large terrace, garden, bar, restaurant, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sauna and a tennis court. The hotel will be closed for renovations until summer 2014. 3 night price from £489 per person low season, £547 per person high season.

‘Seville and the Andalucian Countryside’ A seven night holiday

TEATRO MAESTRANZA The Teatro Maestranza was built to celebrate the Seville EXPO in 1992 and quickly established itself as one of the leading lyric theatres in Spain. In addition to the opera performances listed below there are many ballet performances throughout the season as well as a large number of symphony concerts given by the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, the theatre’s resident ensemble. Rossini's ‘La Cenerentola’ (February) and ‘Gotterdammerung’ by Wagner (June) take to the stage in Seville this season but for something very different – a fully staged performance of a zarzuela. Even the most devoted opera lover has probably not seen a complete zarzuela and where better to enjoy one than in Seville. ‘La delmanojo de Rosas y Pablo Sovozabal’ receives three performances in March. There will also be concerts and ballet performances throughout the season. Call the Kirker Concierge on 020 7593 2286 for schedules and ticket prices.

Three nights Seville, four nights Hacienda de San Rafael One of our most popular tailor-made holidays combines the Moorish charm of Andalucia’s capital with a stay at our favourite countryside property. The Hacienda de San Rafael is a relaxing country inn, 25 miles south of Seville. Price from £1,659 includes hire car (collecting after your stay in Seville) and dinner with wine, each evening at the Hacienda.

All are individually decorated with wooden floors, comfortable armchairs, pastel walls and excellent bathrooms; the suites also have working fireplaces. Each room has its own private terrace or garden. A set dinner is prepared every evening, served either on the veranda or in the dining room; lunch is also available. As well as the main island of Tenerife, there are a number of smaller islands which are perfectly suited to those who seek a tranquil location, either for an overnight stop or as a day trip excursion. 1
