WELCOME CONTENTS

SPRING IS COMING! Am I the only one fed up with this Winter? I’ve been getting all excited about the tiny flashes of colour from the Spring bulbs popping up, and the little birds starting to sing, could it almost be over? Well, to help get you in the mood, my Spring issue is here!! Firstly, I’d like to welcome Glenrothes to their first edition of The Scallywag, hopefully, you will find the contents of this magazine as useful as others have- and if you do, let me know! Now, to get you all back outdoors this Spring, I have included features on Craigtoun Park -a great day out with the kids, and Lochore Meadows-a local, but under-rated place to visit as it has something for everyone and for the most part its FREE! Life, however, isn’t all fun and games for everyone these days, so, I decided to introduce a couple of groups trying to make a difference in our community, such as, Nourish Support Group, The Jack and Jill Market and Abilities 4 All. Also, articles such as Mother’s day and World Book day to help keep you up to date with what’s on-so no excuses if you forget. I hope you enjoy this issue and as always this magazine is for all of you- to bring local people together with local businesses and activities, so, if you have any ideas on what you would like to read about, if you’d like to tell me what you think, or if you’d actually like to contribute to the next issue please get in touch. Have a wonderful Spring everyone!

French Classes for Children.

Experience has found that children starting their language learning at 3 years old or even earlier are more successful than children starting at 8 or 9. At this young age they are very receptive to new sounds, which become familiar very quickly. They are uninhibited and quickly become confident and at ease with the foreign language. For these reasons, Bonjour la France classes are designed for 0-12 year olds. Learning is fun, revolving around games, songs and rhymes, without any pressure. The more fun it is, the more children will acquire without realising and take it in their stride. Bonjour la France– French for Children is owned, managed and run by Aleksandra Kliczykowska - a mum of two who started off teaching French to her own children and friends’ children and then teamed the award winning la Jolier Ronde, becoming a licensee to use their fantastic resources and methodology.

OUT AND ABOUT

CRAIGTOUN PARK,

St Andrews KY16 8NX www.friendsofcraigtoun.org.uk

J

ust two miles from the centre of St Andrews lies Craigtoun Country Park; a beautiful place with mature trees, shrub and grass areas, as well as a modern children’s play area, gardens and picturesque ponds. In recent years this park has attracted some bad press, as some visitors felt it was becoming run down and under maintained, so, in 2012 a group called the ‘Friends of Craigtoun’ formed. They began working in partnership with Fife Council to run the amenities in the park, and have since returned some of the original rides to the park, including the ‘Puffing Billy’ tractor ride. In addition to the Craigtoun Miniature Railway and Puffin Billy Vintage tractor rides, park facilities also include; trampolines, boats, crazy golf and putting, a bouncy castle and some pedal cars for the under 8s. Plans for this year also brings a 30 metre zip line and a ‘trim trail’ which are to be installed by the council in time for this year’s busy summer season, as well as, a new railway station and some shelters in the park. A nature trail leaflet is available from the ticket office and for those of you who like Geocaching, there are four sites within the park to try out your skills. If you like to explore, there’s

Italian garden, greenhouses, formal gardens and assorted other Victorian ornamental features. The park has a good size café which is open to coincide with when the attractions are open. It is also hoped that there will be a kiosk open during busy times for drinks and snacks. The park has toilet facilities - with disabled and baby changing areas although these are based at one side of the park. With loads of open space for families to enjoy, you can bring all sorts of games, and toysor even a picnic to make a proper family adventure day, there’s so much to see and do inside this park, you will need a whole day to explore. Also, if you have a special occasion to celebrate you can now pre-book the large picnic barn. The only drawback being, there is no toilet facilities on this side of the park but that’ll give you lots of excuses to go for a walk back and forth. It is hoped that in the future this will be available for every day use (for wet weather etc but at present it remains a wonderful place for a party).

The park is open all year round and entry is FREE. The paid activites in the park available from March to October each year at various times:29 March-27 April- available eveyday 28 April -29 June- available weekends 30 June - 31 August - available everyday 1 Sept - 26 Oct -available at weekends. Although there is a small charge for the attractions -which you need to buy very reasonable tickets for- its a very nominal charge and compared with other parks is well worth the money, especially the day tickets. You can also take the dog along but just keep them on the lead in the children’s areas.

FAMILY HEALTH

I

Get kids eating Their greens, reds, yellows.....

n 2013 the BBC reported that there had been a fourfold increase in the number of children and teenagers admitted to hospital for obesity-related conditions in the last decade. In 2009, nearly 4,000 young people needed hospital treatment for problems complicated by being overweight compared with just 872 in 2000. Amy Thompson, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “These are very worrying findings that shed more light on a growing threat to the heart health of this nation. Obesity has been linked with serious illnesses during childhood and an increased risk of developing conditions, such as type2 diabetes, asthma and breathing difficulties during sleep. We also know, obese children are more likely to become obese adults who are then at greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke. We must encourage the next generation to make healthier lifestyle choices and help them eat a balanced diet and stay active.” A frightening thought for any parent. So, where does this leave us as parents how can we help our kids? If you are anything like me, you’ve probably found it a constant battle to get your kids to eat ANYTHING never mind a balanced healthy diet:But as daunting and frustrating as the battle is, I have found a few solutions I have tried that may help. Here are a few to try: Cook with your kids. Have younger children tear lettuce into bitesized pieces for a salad. Older kids can help chop some veggies for a soup or stir a pot of vegetable stew. When children feel like they have been a part of making the meal, they are more likely to be interested in tasting it.

Garden together. Growing vegetables together can be a great way to get your kids interested in eating them. You’ll be amazed at how much more interest a child will take in a vegetable if he has invested time and energy into growing it. Go shopping together. Something as simple as going to the supermarket together can be an excellent way to develop good eating habits in children. Get your child interested in meal planning and have them help you pick out fresh vegetables and fruits at the supermarket. When kids feel like they have a say in what to have for dinner, they are more likely to be interested in eating the meal. Lead with a plate of fruits and veggies. Consider the snacks you are offering your kids when they are hungry, whether it’s after school, between activities, or anytime they want something to munch on between meals or while dinner is cooking. If you give them healthy fare when they are the hungriest, they’re more likely to snack on it. Try fruit kebabs? Experiment with different vegetables and recipes. Just because your child doesn’t like steamed broccoli on its own, don’t assume that all greens are out. Try putting it into an omelette or covering it in garlic sauce or similar. My son hates peas unless they are raw-I’ve seen him eat tons from our allotment plants but will not touch one on his plate. He won’t have potatoes in ANY form except mashed (including chips!) and he will only have carrots if they’re in soup, so try all different forms.

Try and try again. I have a favourite recipe for a lentil bolognaise that’s basically vegetables and lentils with pasta. For years, my son ate a few bites of it here and there, and never really took to it. But it’s one of my favourites so I kept making it. And lo and behold, one day, he began to eat it -- by the bowlfuls. That taught me an important lesson: When your child is exposed to a certain food or dish, he can decide that he likes it one day, no matter how healthy it is! Make colourful soups and smoothies. When it comes to getting kids to eat vegetables, remember that fruit, vegetables and the blender can be your best friends. One of the best ways to minimize the taste of veggies and “hide” their flavour is by blending them with some yummy fruit. Mix some berries and a banana with some spinach or kale, add a protein such as yogurt and blend with orange or another type of juice and voila! The medley of sweet flavours will completely hide the vegetables in the drink. Also, making soup is great, as you can put any vegetables in it and blend to a smooth coloured soup. I serve mine with a few slices of cheesy toast and the kids don’t complain. I even make a light soup to feed the kids as a starter so I know they have had their 5 a day before they complain about their dinner having vegetables with it.

Go on give it a try and let me know how it goes!

L

ast summer, we found ourselves with our own two young children and their two friends on a beautiful sunny day with nowhere to go, we didn’t want to spend hours in the car travelling, so we decided to pop along to Lochore Meadows. Packing the car with a picnic, lots of sun cream and drinks-off we went. unfortunately, most of Fife had the same idea that afternoon but although it was busy we didn’t feel crushed and we had plenty of space to play. As the kids were full of energy, we decided to walk around the loch first to cool off in the trees, it’s about 3 miles in length and all though wheelchair users can access it, and it’s quite hilly and steep in places.

OUT & ABOUT

Lochore Meadows Country Park Lochore KY5 8BA 01592 583343 We didn’t go all the way as we had a wonderful time watching anglers catch and release lots of fish. The loch attracts a lot of anglers as it is stocked with Brown and Rainbow Trout. With a permit anglers can take fish per ticket. After noticing that there were tadpoles in the water, the children had a wonderful hour paddling in the shallows catching and releasing them and feeding the ducks. Stopping for a picnic in the large grassy area, we could see the wonderful new massive park they have built with quirky cartoon style wooden structures and giant volcano slide, it was a struggle to get the kids to eat anything they were so excited. We then headed to the Fife council run café complex to use the toilets which are large (suitable for buggies) and very clean when we were there. The complex is right in the middle of the park, and if you’re hungry, you’ll find an excellent selection of Costa Coffee, soft drinks, ice creams, sandwiches, cakes, filled rolls and small meals that are all quite reasonable.

Its easily accessible, however, it does shut early so be sure to check the times before heading out. We then headed off to explore the many walks and woods around the area, These range from gradual woodland walks to very steep ‘cliffs’ - They are mostly well signposted and have wonderful views. We walked to visit the mine shafts and old train here as well as the outdoor gym. After an hour or so the little girls were waning, so, we found the lovely ice-cream van which has never been so popular by the look of the queues, and we took them down the fenced off beach area (dogs aren’t allowed here) that has soft sand, ducks and a cold spring right in the centre.

For those of you not looking for tuition or guidance equipment such as boats and kayaks are available for hire for 1 or 2 hour sessions. There is also a nature reserve with a bird watching hide to the west side of the park. On a nice summers day there are barbecues for hire at a reasonable cost, and there is plenty of grassy areas for playing games like football and rounders. In brief there is something for everyone here! So, whether its hail, rain or shine this park is great, we had a wonderful time. The park holds lots of events throughout the year so why not check out their website and pop along.

You won’t be disappointed!

We spent well over an hour here paddling in the calm water and playing on the beach, skipping stones and trying to soak each other. We didn’t venture over to the outdoor centre as ours are too young, but the centre offers canoeing, sailing, kayaking, raft building, and rock climbing to name but a few of the many outdoor activities on offer. These activities are prebookable, by contacting the centre.

life, and to be honest, there’s very little to do nowadays. I’ve got kids of my own and they’ve nowhere to go. There aren’t enough community events to make people want to come to this town. With this centre it’s hoped that things will change. Eventually, we’ll be looking to take on staff but in the meantime we’re asking for volunteers who’d like to give us a hand.” Ross who is eager to build on the initial response to the centre said: “We’re planning a car boot every two weeks and an event of some sort every other week, whether it be a wedding show or a craft fair, just something different to get people coming to Glenrothes. We’ve lots of ideas so we’ll be sitting down and planning how we’re going to take this forward.” So to find out more, to volunteer or to offer your ideas pop into the centre at :unit 3 in the Castleblair Business Centre, Glenrothes

PLAYZONE’S NEW LOOK

he Management team of Kirkcaldy’s Playzone Soft Play and Laser Centre have put a lot of time and effort into making Playzone the best family run soft Play and Laser centre in Fife. They have extensively refurbished parts of the play area, introducing new disney characters for the children and holding fantastic themed days. Such as Fancy dress, Toddler days, Mum’s Night Off, -where mums can have their nails done whilst their kid’s burn off some energy. until now there has been is a lack of this kind of activity in Fife, but not anymore. A brief guide for those of you that have never been, the soft play area is based over two levels. On the ground level there is a giant ball pool, that the kids love, there’s also a separate mini ball pool for under 3’s in the toddler area. This has also recently been

refurbished and is filled with lots of fun toys and plenty of space to run around for the wee ones! The ‘dark crawl’ tunnels are great fun for everyone, whilst others may prefer the two slides, or the helterskelter; how about for the older thrill seekers, our death slide chute! The soft brick padded area is great fun for building and getting kids to use their imagination. Walk up the ramp to the upper level and there are several mazes to play ‘chase’ or ‘hide and seek’. and you can try your hand at the tightrope, not forgetting to make sure you navigate through the punch bags on your way to the mini-castle with slide. Fantasic fun! The centre’s new disney characters are usually out to entertain the kids with fun and dancing at weekends, so make sure you bring your camera. At night, it’s all change as the Centre

switches to Laser Quest fun, which I recommend you book, as this gets busy. Playzone is a great place for all the family and guaranteed fun for all ages. The well-stocked cafe is also open all day and there is something for everyone’s taste buds. There is also a separate kids menu to choose from and with a wide selection of chilled drinks. If you enjoy a good cup of coffee, you will love the selection of Italian delights. The staff are well-trained and extremely friendly. Come along, see for yourself and let the kids have some great fun. Playzone also offers a wide variety of party packages and now you can even hire the disney characters. So whatever you need from peace and quiet, an energetic workout for the kids, a friendly face, or a good dose of disney fun, pop into the new look Playzone.

A MOTHERS LOVE

his Mother’s day, on Sunday March 30th, people across the globe will take time to do something special to thank their Mother for all her help and support during the last year. But why do we celebrate Mother’s day, and how have things changed over the years?

The History of Mother’s day. The first Mother’s day celebrations can be traced back to the ancient Greek Festival dedicated to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. In England, it was in the 1600s when the phrase “Mothering Sunday was first coined. A Mother’s love is one of the most powerful forces in this world. Here are 10 ways to celebrate her love this Mother’s day: 1. Create a Memory Jar. Fill a jar with slips of paper, each detailing a special memory you and your mother have shared.

The more specific the memories, the better. Present her with the jar, and sit beside her as she reads each memory. 2. Interview the children in your family (both young and old) on what special things they love most about their mother. Record the sentiments on video or transcribe the thoughts in a special album. You could also record special memories, favorite family recipes, her best maternal words of wisdom...anything you want to remember about your mother. 3. Make a Blessing Book. Cover a hardbound journal with patterned papers and include photos of each of your mother’s children, as well as a special pen for her to record what she is most grateful for in this world. Here are step-by-step instructions for creating such a book. 4. Help a mother in need by donating money, clothing, or other household items to organisations that help mothers and children. . Make a donation to your mum’s favourite charity, in her name. 6. Get together with your family and friends and create handmade cards for your mum. Make sure to include a heartfelt, handwritten letter. 7. Send flowers to a new mum in

celebration of her first Mother’s day. 8. Make a tablecloth memento. Start with an oversized tablecloth and some fabric pens. Ask each member of the family to sign the tablecloth with a special message to mum. kids can make their handprints, too. This is a keepsake that you can add to each Mother’s day. 9. Write a letter to your children about how being their parent has enriched you. Save these letters in a special journal or album to give to your children when they become parents themselves. 10. Spend some time looking through your scrapbooks and reflecting on the bounty of love that comes to you via family and maternal love.

NOURISH

COMING TOGETHER FOR FAMILIES WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT NEEDS

NEW group aimed at helping families of children with additional support needs is now available at Linton Lane Centre. Nourish meets every Thursday afternoon (during school terms) at Linton Lane Centre, Kirkcaldy from 12.45-2.30pm and is open to the whole of Fife. They cater for families and carers of kids who have a range of conditions - from Autism and Down’s Syndrome to genetic disorders and developmental issues. The group is run by a wonderful lady called Lynn, who says “The aim of the group is to provide a mutual support network for everyone involved; so much so, its members are all parents, grandparents and carers of children and young adults. One of the most difficult times families face is when a child is first given a diagnosis. We have all experienced this and know how traumatic

it can be. That is why the group works well, as we’ve all been there. This is why Nourish is so important because it can give families going through this situation a place to go and talk about it. They may really benefit from coming to our group.”

is also a small sitting room if anyone wants some quiet time to themselves. So, for more information please contact Lynn on 01592 560744 or why not try Facebook

The group gives parents, families and children the chance to relax and have a chat and a cuppa about any issues affecting them, without any pressure. They are careful to involve the whole family as they know first-hand it can affect everyone when you have a child with additional support needs. Help and support also comes from the educational home visiting service, as well as, a wide range of links with other agencies to offer information and advice on benefits, respite, workshops and anything else anyone may be struggling with. Children who come along are provided with a safe play area with toys and a healthy snack for them to enjoy, and there

FAMILY FUN Easter cupcake nests You need:

10g Self-Raising flour 20g Butter 10g Caster Sugar 3 Eggs Vanilla Essence 00g Icing Sugar 200g Milk Chocolate 2 Large Shredded Wheat Mini Eggs to decorate

Method:

1) Pre-heat oven to 180c. 2) In a mixer, cream 10g of butter with 10g of caster sugar. Recipe by Claire at Scottish Perfections. 3) Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each egg. 4) Fold in the self-raising flour with a spoon. ) Line a 12 cup baking tray with cupcake cases. Spoon the mixture into the cases until two-thirds full. Place in the oven until golden and springy. (Approx. 1-20mins). 6) Once baked, set aside to cool. FOR THE BuTTERCREAM: Place the icing sugar, 100g of butter and a few drops if vanilla essence into the mixer, then add a small splash of milk or just enough to get a smooth creamy, thick texture. Find your favourite nozzle and place in piping bag with mixture. (You can spoon it on if you dont have a piping bag just miss this step). Leave aside. NESTS: In a microwave melt all your chocolate, then break up your Shredded Wheat add it to the melted chocolate, mix well so the wheat is fully covered. Place grease-proof paper onto a baking tray and spoon small amounts of mix into the paper, then using a teaspoon, carefully hollow out the middle and place a few Mini Eggs in the middle (I find one large Mini Egg works well or three mini eggs). Put these aside to set. ASSEMBLY: Take your cooled cupcakes out of the baking tray. On each cupcake, pipe or spoon on some buttercream, then once chocolate nests have set, place one on top of the butter cream on each cupcake.

Enjoy your Easter Nest Cupcakes!

EASTER MARSHMALLOW BARK You need:

20g bag of Rainbow Mini Marshmallows. 340g White Chocolate Easter Sprinkles

Method: 1) 2)

3)

4)

)

6)

From www.butterwithasideofbread.com

Start by lining an 8x11cm sized baking tray with greaseproof paper, then measure out 3 cups of marshmallows into a large bowl. Put the white chocolate in a medium sized glass bowl. Melt the chocolate in the microwave for 1 minute. Give it a small stir and then return it to the microwave for 30 seconds, Stir several times after each 30-second burst in the microwave. keep going until it looks almost melted but lumpy, then keep stirring in the warm bowl to melt the rest. After the chocolate has melted, add the marshmallows and stir to coat. You’ll need to do this quickly, be sure the chocolate coats the marshmallows well. If you take too long, the marshmallows start to melt, which you don’t want. Transfer chocolate coated marshmallows to your prepared baking tray. using a tablespoon, spread out the mixture to the edge of the tray. Press down slightly to make it even. Shake on any sprinkles you’d like to decorate the bark with. Put the mixture in the freezer for about 20 minutes, until the chocolate is set. You need to use the freezer so the chocolate cools as quickly as possible, you don’t want those marshmallows to melt! Remove from the freezer and let it sit to return to room temperature. Then cut into shapes. If you’re using a cookie cutter, I suggest using a metal one and spraying the edges with cooking spray prior to cutting.

Enjoy!!
