Tell us a little about both your background; where you were born, where you grew up and where you spent most of your adult life. M: I grew up in Taiping and went to London in 1971 to train as a nurse. I met Victor soon after I arrived and married him in 1976 in Taiping. He bought a big motorbike and we took a three-month honeymoon touring most of Malaysia on the bike! We returned to England where I worked up the ranks from staff nurse to an operating theatre manager in Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, managing 14 operating theatres. V: I was born and educated in the east end of London. I am the oldest and only son and have two younger sisters. After I married Malika, I was offered a job to work for British Gas. I started off from the bottom of the scale and worked my way up to site supervisor for British Gas.

Both of you are active members in several local NGOs. Can you tell us more about your involvement in these activities? M: When we first moved here, we bought two Labradors without realising the immense stray problem. Through our vet, we got involved with a trap neuter and release (TNR) programme with a few volunteers. We registered ourselves as the Noah’s Ark Ipoh (NAI) in 2009. NAI also manages the cattery at ISPCA. All cats and kittens are treated, vaccinated, dewormed and neutered. Like many other rescuers we are also fosterers. Our home is taken over by dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. The problem with strays will continue as long as people do not neuter their pets and dump them on the streets. It has been a year since you took up the position of CEO at Tenby Schools Malaysia. Could you share with us your observation and thoughts about where the organisation is, and where it is going? What will we be celebrating a year from now? I am in awe with the growth of Tenby Schools, the community element to its vision and mission, and most importantly, the foundation set by the late Dato’ KK Lim and his family, and Robert Lloyd. Robert was instrumental in the expansion and development of the group, and he has successfully set up a solid groundwork for us to build on, which I truly appreciate. I also inherited a talented and dedicated team of corporate colleagues and school leaders whom I value greatly. Moving forward, our aims are geared towards the elements of quality control and establishing structure. I hope to use my experience to drive this – from getting the right people into the right jobs, to introducing suitable systems to promote excellence and quality and structure in the organisation.

The idea of joining Tenby was mooted about six years ago but I was fully committed in Central Asia. However, I remained very interested in view of my “commitment” to this beautiful country. I first came to Malaysia in 1993 with my former wife, who was actually born in Kluang, Johor, so we have adapted well to living in Malaysia. Obviously that had influenced me greatly to keep returning, and I even bought a house in Langkawi in 1999, knowing that my future would somehow involve Malaysia. Dato’ Lim Si Boon’s offer re-emerged towards the end of 2013 when my predecessor, Mr. Robert Lloyd retired, so, here I am, one year into the job as CEO of Tenby Schools Malaysia.

I am very excited with the partnership with Ekuinas as this only means there are opportunities for greater professionalism and growth. However, I do not want this to fundamentally change our market niche. We will remain accessible and relevant to a wider audience. We simply do what we do best, and we will do it better!
In between these, I managed to return to Scotland for a year, mostly to see my family and children. I also took this opportunity to link up Scottish schools with the Outstanding Schools Foundation in Qatar; hence also did some consultancy work in the Middle East.
D O IV
D O IV
D O IV
Around this time, I started my own consultancy (AB Consulting), based in Singapore and became involved with several projects in South East Asia; one of which includes the initial negotiations for Marlborough College on setting up its campus in the Iskandar Development Region. I also worked with the Dulwich Group as their Business Development Director to help them with the opening of new schools in China, South Korea and more recently in Singapore.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, and your career in education. This year would be the 37th year of my career in education. I have done most jobs – from teaching to being a housemaster and a headmaster. In 2005, I was headhunted to set up the first Haileybury School in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and that essentially was my first foray into school development at the corporate level. It was a steep learning curve for me, having to lead school development from concept to reality. The manifestation of this concept took place in 2008 with an award-winning school building, followed by the setting up of its sister school in Astana three years later.

Who is your role model, and why? It would be Eric Anderson, who was the Headmaster at Shrewsbury School, UK, where I taught some years ago. Also a Scotsman, he was truly an inspirational figure. There is nothing wrong with changing a Campbell Road to Jalan Dang Wangi, but the fundamentals of education, i.e. the teaching of English, as an international language, needs to be addressed with urgency. It is simply too important to be pushed aside. If one needs any confirmation of this, one just have to look south to Singapore.

Your career has brought you to many countries. What would be your most memorable event or experience from these travels? My former wife took a career break in teaching to join the aviation industry many years ago so we got to travel quite a bit. We once flew from London to Alaska and the captain invited me to join him in the cockpit as we were approaching Anchorage at dawn. The sight of Mount McKinley in front me emerging in the morning light was one of the most majestic moments I have seen in my entire life – it was an emotional experience, one which I would never forget.
D O IV
D O IV
D O IV
Another one would be something that I will never experience again. We landed in Osaka, Japan on Christmas morning and the hotel manager welcomed us and told us that we would be having Christmas lunch. As it was a short trip, we were flying out of Osaka to Alaska that same evening. We arrived at Alaska at 8.00 a.m., on Christmas morning, again, and was offered Christmas lunch by the hotel manager as well! So, I had two Christmas lunches in two continents on the same day! A remarkable experience!

Now that you have made Malaysia your home, what is the best thing about living in this country? As I said earlier, I love everything about Malaysia. I like its culture, food and diversity. There is a huge variation of English fluency among the Malaysians I encounter daily. English is a simple but vital tool for sustainability. One of the reasons for the exponential growth of private and international schools is their ability to provide value added education, with emphasis on the English language to most Malaysian families. I believe this is the way forward for Tenby Schools too.
D O IV

What are your views on the education scene in Malaysia? I love Malaysia and everything about it! It is amazing how assimilated the society is, and the monumental growth in most sectors is simply astounding. Sadly, the development of education has not been a great strength.

You are obviously a very busy man. What do you do during your free time to relax? I like to swim and keep fit, and I try to do so as much as possible in my free time. I used to run as well, but am doing less of that now. Snow skiing is another favourite activity – something that brings me close to nature and my children, who are both very accomplished skiers. I enjoy reading, particularly non-fiction, biographies and being a geographer; I am an avid fan of the National Geographic magazine.

As for food, there is so much to choose from! I like the concept of food courts in Malaysia. Food is always available, anywhere, anytime in this country. In fact, I have a cooker in my apartment, which I have never used because I simply have never needed to!
In building on Dato’ KK Lim’s vision, I want to use my experience and influence to add another dimension to the Malaysian education system. In Kazakhstan we certainly changed the façade of private education, and set new benchmarks, particularly in international accreditation (something which I hope to emulate in Malaysia). Through developing important benchmarking, and bringing in international inspection opportunities (through OFSTED/ISI), there will be very similar opportunities here.

What is your favourite weekend destination in Malaysia and favourite Malaysian food? I bought my first home in Malaysia in Langkawi so naturally I’m biased towards this beautiful island. I believe I share the love for Langkawi with former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohammad. I am also fond of Tioman and Penang.
Kazakhstan was exciting and the most extraordinary country to work in, but, here with Tenby, we are dealing with different and much bigger challenges. Not only in the size of our group, but in the expansion of both the international and national school programmes. This present unique challenges for us and for me personally and I find it rewarding that we are making a significant contribution to the Malaysian education scene.

The MM2H is a fascinating programme and I might consider it for myself in the future. Malaysia is also a great hub for travel and tourism. It is very easy and convenient to move around within the country and the region.

These reviews, involving a number of other senior colleagues from across the group, have focused on the quality of teaching and learning provision. It focused also on the role parents and school leaders play in establishing a school where every child can achieve their potential.
Audits, reviews or inspections call them what you will, all require an inspection team to compare school performance alongside a given set of criteria. In the case of the Tenby reviews, these criteria have included: • • • • •
• •
Vision and Strategic Planning Teaching & Learning Leadership Support Staff Student Access to the Curriculum including EAL and SEN provision. Partnerships within the Community Health & Safety
As each school goes through the process, each of the above criteria are then rated as either: • • • •
Outstanding Good Satisfactory Unsatisfactory
Together they enable the review team to award an overall rating to the school. At the same time the review team is also able to congratulate the school on what it is doing well and provide a list of recommendations, in order to help the school and its leadership team move forward with regards to the development of the school.

For teachers coming straight from the UK, inspections are becoming very much the norm. And as teachers, we do like to say and quite often say this: That it is difficult to assess a process that is so dependent on relationships and social development. It is a fact however, that in today’s competitive educational market, we do need to look at the process of learning from the point of adding value. We do need to assess all aspects of a school, and ensure our young learners have the best chance to succeed. As a company focusing on educating children, we continue to remain competitive alongside other organisations.
Each of the reviews I have led, have thrown up different challenges for each of the school sections put under the spot light. This is not surprising given the various ages, school rolls and developmental status of each of our Tenby Schools. However, one thing has remained constant and that is the enthusiasm of our young learners. From the youngest child at three to the oldest at 18, I have been amazed and humbled by the manner in which they have approached their studies. I have also been reassured that despite all that is going on outside the school gates, in a world which appears to be in turmoil, Tenby’s vision of “A United World at Peace- Through Education” continues to bind our children and teachers together. As I review school performance and break it down into its component parts, I have begun to think about our vision and how we can measure its success? Is our vision really achievable and should it be?
A united world is something I am sure all of us in an international setting would love to see. However, reality leads me to wonder that with people out there driven to bring destruction to others, will we ever see a world together as one? It is comforting therefore that when we look closely at a Tenby School, we see unity and oneness. We are united regardless of background, culture or colour. Walk onto a Tenby campus, and you see students from our Malaysian Private Schools and our International Schools, regardless of age, share their playtime and CCAs with each, share a common uniform and a common set of beliefs and expectations. They see no divide and it is that absence of a divide which I find so refreshing.
Earlier in February, Tenby Schools held its first Music Festival at the Bandar Meru Raya campus here in Ipoh. Students from across our five schools came together to celebrate their passion for all things musical. Not only was the quality of the performances amazing, but the manner in which our children worked together on common projects, indicated that our vision is still very much relevant and as strong as it has been in the last ten years. Music is a language, which actually has the power to bind all across the world regardless of the spoken language. Music clearly has brought the Tenby Group together this term and has only reinforced our passion to continue to be united through education.

Also seen at this year’s sports day were the trainee teachers from Stranmillis University College, who by then had spent a month at Tenby Schools Ipoh for their final year placement, through a special collaborative programme between the school and the university in Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK. I am so thankful for this opportunity, I am so sad to be leaving so soon but I will always have great memories of my time in Malaysia. Rebecca Smyth (TEYCI – Year 1)
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time teaching in Tenby. During my time with Year 4 Green, I have accompanied their assembly song and have taught Numeracy, Literacy and IPC lessons. The level of respect that the children show is of a very high standard and their eagerness to learn is incredible. I will miss the teachers and staff immensely and would like to thank them for making me feel so at ease during my time here. Alex McBride (TEYCM – Year 4 Green)
I completely loved every minute of my time at Tenby International School Ipoh. The teachers were all exceptionally welcoming and helpful, playing an important part After four weeks of working at in making this experience so Tenby Kindergarten, I am sad to enjoyable. I have to give L-R: Susan, Rebecca, Cherith and Alex see that my time has suddenly particular mention to my class come to an end. I have never felt so welcomed into a school teacher Ms Andrea who was enormously supportive and and have never had the privilege of teaching such bright accommodating to me, acting as mentor as I completed my and intelligent children for their age. It has been a great teaching practice. The children at Tenby Schools play a blessing to work here and I will leave with so many tremendous role in creating an amazing atmosphere that wonderful memories of the experiences I have had. makes it a very happy environment to be part of as they Susan Carroll (TEYCI – Reception) greet you with enthusiasm, cheer and dedication every day. I would love to have the opportunity to return to Tenby I have enjoyed every minute of my time in Malaysia, it is someday and would thoroughly recommend this experience such a beautiful country and I feel at home here already! I to anyone who has the opportunity. have really enjoyed teaching in Tenby, the pupils are so Cherith O’Hara (TEYCM – Year 3 Blue) energetic, intelligent and enthusiastic about learning.

A Letter of
D O Appreciation IV from

Mr. Allan Pilling, a Golf Vista apartment owner who plays regularly at Meru Valley’s golf course, wrote to our Director, Dato’ Lim Si Boon recently to praise the management team for the well-maintained fairway.

Dear Dato', I trust you are well. We have only passed the time of day previously so you may not remember me. My wife and I have an apartment in Golf Vista and we have been active members of the club since we first took possession. Today in England we have a beautiful Spring day, temperature around 10 degrees and quite sunny - golf this afternoon at my UK club!

The reason for writing is to congratulate you and your staff on the improvements made to the golf course over the last couple of years. On our recent trip to Meru (we can only spend three holidays a year for two or three weeks at a time) I thought the course was especially good after a spell of dry weather. It was great to have your ball roll that extra twenty or thirty yards!!
IV
D O I serve as the Finance Director of myD home club and have sat on our O IV Greens' Committee for a number of years so I know of the work (and D V Oof I costs) needed to make the improvements that you have. I also know IV the pressures that members can bring so I hope more members are D expressing their appreciation of all that hard work. Of course, key to D O gaining the improvement is the support of hard-working staff and I can V D O I see there O as well that workers are more active. Well V D done to your I manager and supervisors. V D O I V O I V Whilst writing, I would also commend your golf registration staff who I always greet Jill and myself very courteously, with a friendly smile D D O whilst carrying out their duties very efficiently. At the recent year end party held at the Dome Restaurant, the theme was Cultural Night. Programmes for the evening included a Bamboo dance performance, live band and dancing, games and the highlight of the night; the grand lucky draw. Everyone who attended the dinner were entertained and had a fun-filled night.
However, the icing on the cake was the objective behind the ticket sales. The management had made a magnanimous decision this year to have all proceeds from tickets sold amounting to RM10,000 to be donated to the flood victims in Perak.
Meru Valley’s General Manager Ms Florence Foo presented the cheque to Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Perak Chairman YB Dato’ Haji Mohamad Rafial Mokhtar at MRCS hall on 14th January 2015. “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.” – John Holmes

“Time flies when you are having fun”, the old English idiom says, and there is no doubt that it has applied to the IpohWorld team since I wrote about Han Chin Pet Soo, the home of the Hakka Miners’ Club in issue 22 of this publication. It seems like only yesterday, but it was actually 15 months ago; and in the intervening period, the team has managed the restoration of the building (complete with period bay windows), and built an exhibition about the club which turns 122 years old this year. Today therefore, we are smiling as we survey what we have actually achieved.

So far this project has been a happy experience for both guests and guides alike and nothing but laughter and compliments have filled the air. Just taking a sample from those featured in the photographs, we heard: “Fantastic”, “A beautiful building, wonderfully restored”, “The best attraction in Ipoh”, “Lovely restoration project. Hope you can do more like this.”, “Nice heritage for the younger generation to learn and ponder on.”, “An awesome and fantastic place. Keep up the Good Work.”, “Very happy to have visited HCPS, It reminds me of the old days and the atmosphere during the mining years”, “It reminds me of when my mum was a Dulang Washer.” And from the younger guests, “Cool”, “Awesome”. What greater praise could one wish for?

But we are not the only people smiling, for after a truly enjoyable trial evening for invited guests, we opened to the public on 5th February this year and have had a generally good response for a new attraction tucked away in the depths of Old Town, Ipoh. Those that have managed to find us have undoubtedly had a good time and hundreds of smiling faces have joined the ranks of Facebook albums. You can see some of these here. We have also received great coverage from the Ipoh Echo, the Malay Mail and Nanyang Siang Pau. So the word is out in town that this is a great new place to visit, with something for everybody, with displays in three languages, Malay, Chinese and English throughout.

Entry to the building and the guided tour are currently free of charge, but there is an old red postbox in which we ask you to place a meaningful donation. All of these will go towards maintaining this dignified and beautiful building that forms a unique part of Ipoh’s heritage.
