Explore the Japanese Way

Japanese books are frequently inspired by the country’s long history as well its rich (and sometimes dark) culture. Learn more through our special promotion this month. The Tale of Genji

The Woman in the Dunes

Wabi Sabi

Shikibu Murasaki ISBN 9780679729532

Kobo Abe

ISBN 9780316118255

In the eleventh century Murasaki Shikibu, a lady in the Heian court of Japan, wrote the world’s first novel. But The Tale of Genji is no mere artifact. It is, rather, a lively and astonishingly nuanced portrait of a refined society where every dalliance is an act of political consequence, a play of characters whose inner lives are as rich and changeable as those imagined by Proust.

ISBN 9780679733782

The Woman in the Dunes, by celebrated writer and thinker Kobo Abe, combines the essence of myth, suspense and the existential novel. After missing the last bus home following a day trip to the seashore, an amateur entomologist is offered lodging for the night at the bottom of a vast sand pit. But when he attempts to leave the next morning, he quickly discovers that the locals have other plans.

Wabi Sabi, a little cat in Kyoto, Japan, had never thought much about her name until friends visiting from another land asked her owner what it meant. A lovely book featuring beautiful collages with lyrical text.

Margi Preus

Kokoro

Hailed by The New York Times as “rich in understanding and insight,” this si the work of one of Japan’s most popular authors. This thought-provoking trilogy of stories is a stirring introduction to modern Japanese literature. The subject of Kokoro, which can be translated as “the heart of things” or as “feeling,” is the delicate matter of the contrast between the meanings the various parties of a relationship attach to it. In the course of this exploration, Soseki brilliantly describes different levels of friendship, family relationships, and the devices by which men attempt to escape from their fundamental loneliness.

Mark Reibstein

Tetsuko Kuroyanagi ISBN 9781568363912

This engaging series of childhood recollections tells about an ideal school in Tokyo during World War II that combined learning with fun, freedom, and love. This unusual school had old railroad cars for classrooms, and it was run by an extraordinary man–its founder and headmaster Sosaku Kobayashi–who was a firm believer in freedom of expression and activity. This book is another movie reflection on Japanese history and the ways of times past.

Kinokuniya Reader | January 2017

In 1841 a Japanese fishing vessel sinks. Its crew is forced to swim to a small, unknown island, where they are rescued by a passing American ship. Japan’s borders remain closed to all Western nations, so the crew sets off to America, learning English on the way. Manjiro, a 14-year-old boy, is curious and eager to learn everything he can about this new culture. Eventually the captain adopts Manjiro and takes him to his home in New England. The boy lives there for some time and then heads to San Francisco to pan for gold. After many years, he makes it back to Japan, only to be imprisoned as an outsider. With his hard-won knowledge of the West, Manjiro is in a unique position to persuade the emperor to ease open the boundaries around Japan.

This month we look at the life and works of famous physicist Stephen Hawking.

The Smartest Man in The Universe On 08 January 1942, a very famous physicist was born: Stephen William Hawking. Hawking is famous for his mental prowess and the physical obstacles he has had to overcome in his life. Hawking has a rare early-onset, slow-progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as motor neuron disease in the UK and as Lou Gehrig’s Disease in the US, that has gradually paralyzed him over the decades. But the disease does not stop him from being one of the world’s eminent theoretical physicists, cosmologists, an author and the Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. He met his future wife, Jane Wilde, (known as Jane Hawking) while doing his undergraduate degree. She has written the autobiography and very famous book Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, which was made in to an award-winning film a few years ago called The Theory of Everything. Even after they separated in 1995, Jane continued to support her ex-husband through his health problems as he continued to focus on his studies.
