TEST CRICKET

Kgn…

Apart from the fact that this is where I ‘born and grow’… my biological family, my work family and my church family are here, and of course, most of my friends. But more than anything, I love the vibrancy of the city. I love the people, the entertainment, the food, parks, the beaches. For me the cultural activities – the theatre, the cinemas, the art galleries, the concerts, the plays…something for everyone. Kingston…the city that never sleeps! -

A lot is happening in !town" The Ministry of Tourism & Entertainment is currently having island-wide consultations on the Community Tourism Policy & Strategy which is now a green paper. Lively discussions have already ensued in the Kingston Metropolitan Resort Area and the objective is to garner further feedback from stakeholders in order to ensure that the policy reflects the will of the people. All this has to be done prior to the policy being tabled as a white paper which will then go on to policy implementation. Issues of capacity for implementation, insufficient funding, the need for relationship building, dirtiness of the city, need for retraining of persons on the north coast to not dissuade visitors from coming to Kingston, crime, sports tourism, established guidelines, the

Chairman’s Corner by James Samuels philosophy of community tourism and marketing of the city, a need for tiers of standards and how community tourism can positively impact inner city communities have not gone un-noted.

VICTORIA CRAFT TRADERS GET Entrepreneurial Skills Training

It was a proud moment for the members of the Victoria Craft Market downtown Kingston, who recently completed a course in Entrepreneurial, Merchandizing and Business Skills. Some Twenty Eight (28) traders were handed their certificates by Heart Trainers and the graduates were elated that they had attended the course initiated by the Tourism Product Development Company Ltd. (TPDCo)

The Entrepreneurial, Merchandizing and Business Skills training will continue in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril during the period of July to September 2014.

Participants had raving reviews about the benefits of the course and its delivery.

According to the Graduates, “the course was meaningful and welltimed and now we see ourselves as business persons.” The course represented what was dubbed “a New Day” for the traders. The sessions were so impactful that the graduates have committed themselves to sharing some of the new ideas learnt with their other colleagues in the market. Craft Traders from the Victoria Craft Market strike a pose with Heart Trainers Shirley Lindo (extreme left) and Stacy Mignott (extreme right) after receiving their certificates in Entrepreneurial, Merchandizing and Business Skills Training which was completed in April.

Get All Right with the Experience Jamaica Road Show 2014 The 2014 launch of Experience Jamaica kicked off with a “tourism village” within Expo Jamaica, at the National Arena in April that featured an extensive range of products, services and entertainment samples from the businesses that operate in the local tourist industry. Smaller versions continue to be held around the island look out for the roadshows in Portmore June 28 and First introduced five years ago, the “Experience Jamaica” Ocho Rios July 12. Discounts range from 5-50%. campaign will be using an aggressive combination of customer education and consumer discounts to dramatically increase local interest in, and use of the country’s tourism facilities including attractions, accommodations, transport and shopping. The Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) is once again encouraging resident Jamaicans to taste, see, feel and enjoy more of the country’s tourism product and rediscover the cuisine, places and activities that make the island an enduring magnet to visitors from around the world.

According to Director of Tourism, John Lynch, “Experience Jamaica” will be an intensive campaign, the value of which cannot be overemphasized. “We have always recognized the importance of the local market, and, while there have been similar campaigns in the past, we are convinced that this is the right time to show our people in a huge and unforgettable way, that when it comes to vacationing and entertainment options, absolutely no place is better than yard.”

KARL HENDRICKSON RECEIVES THE REV. DR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR HUMANITARIAN AWARD 2014

Jamaican philanthropist and business leader, the Hon. Karl Hendrickson OJ, CD, Hon LLD (UWI), has received the Rev. Dr Martin Luther King Jr Humanitarian Award 2014 for outstanding contribution to human development in Jamaica. This was announced by the Jamaica America Friendship Association (JAFA), presenters of the Award, which is given to individuals or organisations serving their communities in the spirit of the late American civil rights leader and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize (1964). Mr. Hendrickson, was presented with the Award at a Banquet held under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency the Governor-General, the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, ON, GCMG, CD, at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel recently. Dr King, whose philosophy was based on selfless service and non-violent activism, campaigned for racial equality and human development, serving as an inspiration to persons not only in the United States of America but all over the world, including Jamaica. The Rev. Dr Martin Luther King Jr Award has been established in several communities and countries, to help ensure that the legacy of Dr King as peacemaker and humanitarian will be passed on through generations to come. Past Jamaican recipients of the Award include former Prime Ministers The Most Hon. Michael Manley and The Most Hon. Edward Seaga; The Most Hon. Lady Bustamante, OJ; Hon. Abe Issa, OJ; Hon. Carlton Alexander, OJ; The Very Rev. Hon. Richard Ho Lung, OJ; Hon. Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, OJ; Hon. Douglas Orane, OJ; Sir William Morris and Food for the Poor.

In a distinguished career spanning decades, Mr. Hendrickson, Chairman of National Continental Corporation Limited, has made a significant and sustained contribution to facilitating human development. His record of philanthropy, particularly in the field of education, is well established. Over the years he has been the recipient of several accolades and awards. The National Honour, Order of Jamaica was conferred on him in 2003. His other awards include an honorary doctorate from The University of the West Indies and he has been inducted into the Private Sector Hall of Fame. In accepting this esteemed award Mr. Hendrickson said, “I am humbled by this Martin Luther King Humanitarian award and would like to express gratitude to the Jamaica America Friendship Association for bestowing me with one of the most significant honours that I have ever received.” He spoke of his long held and deep admiration for the iconic leader Martin Luther King, who fulfilled his purpose. Mr. Hendrickson alluded to his early upbringing in rural Jamaica and his family that encouraged acting in the interest of the collective good rather than just for exclusive or personal gain. “We were taught the value of education, the importance of hard work and the necessity of patriotism.” The awardee said he was grateful for these values that were imbued in him by his elders and he has passed these influences to his own children. “I often say that my greatest achievement in life has been the close knit nature of my family and I share this honour with them tonight because of their unending support and the motivation they give me to be the best man I can be.”

What is the Jamaica America Friendship Association JAFA The Jamaica America Friendship Association (JAFA) was established in 2005 and publicly launched in February 2006. JAFA was the result of the efforts of the late Angella Harvey who was at the time an officer in the Public Affairs Department of the United States Embassy in Kingston. Mrs. Harvey brought together the leaders of two organizations – Mr. Ken Jones, President of the Jamaica America Society and Mr. Morin Seymour, President of the American Studies Association – who had a common goal of promoting a better understanding of and cooperation between the peoples of the USA and Jamaica. Both leaders recognized the value of sharing strengths and diversity, and readily agreed to the formation of a single association. The Jamaica America Friendship Association (JAFA) was born from that union. JAFA continues to promote friendship between and to maintain an alliance with the people of the United States and Jamaica and does so through an annual programme of activities combining social, cultural and educational events. Through its fundraising efforts, including our Concert, “Music Through the Ages” that is under the patronage of our Governor General, His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, ON, GCMG, CD, JAFA undertakes several projects during the year in keeping with its mandate to improve the lot of the most vulnerable in our Society: • The award of two bursaries to The University of the West Indies and The University of Technology, Jamaica in alternative years, for qualified but needy final year students • Hosting a Christmas Treat for approximately two hundred children from Children’s homes in Kingston and St. Andrew and • Assisting with the upgrading and refurbishing of the National Water Commission Co-op Basic School.

Another of the annual events undertaken by JAFA is the presentation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award to an outstanding Jamaican whose life and work embodies and reflects the ideals of Martin Luther King, Jr. To date five individuals and one organization have received the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award. They are, The Most Hon. Edward Seaga, ON, PC, Hon. LlD; The Hon. Gordon “Butch” Stewart, OJ, CD, Hon. LlD; The Hon. Douglas Orane, CD, J. P. Hon. LlD., The Very Rev. Father Richard HoLung, Missionaries of the Poor and Food for the Poor. It was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ While some of us may not have responded positively to this call to assist in alleviating the pain and suffering of others, this year’s recipient has done so. JAFA is pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award is the Hon. Karl Hendrickson – an outstanding entrepreneur who is highly respected for his contribution to our country’s development particularly in the areas of tourism and baking industries as well as for his many philanthropic pursuits. He has found that “all labour that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence”. Mr. Hendrickson received this award at a function held recently at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston under the Patronage of the Governor General, His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, ON, GCMG, CD, and Mr. Christopher Degnon Public Relations Officer, United States Embassy.
