WELCOME TO KINGSTON ARTISTS OPEN STUDIOS 2019 (OS19) The Open Studios event in Kingston has gone from strength to strength over the past nine years since it began. This year we have 90 artists and makers showing a range of 3D and 2D work in 26 different venues across Kingston. This is a perfect opportunity for you to meet local artists, see their work and discover the techniques they use and the passions that inspire them. Open Studios is a nationwide scheme, created to support the work of artists within the local community. The aim is to promote accessibility to art and artists. Visits are free of charge and artists are happy to talk about their creative process. Works of art are for sale but there is no obligation to buy, the focus is on enjoying your visit. As an added dimension this year some exhibitors will be giving demonstrations of their techniques. See the catalogue for details of where and when. OS19 will take place over two weekends: 8-9 and 15-16 June, between 11am and 5pm Please join us at Dorich House, Kingston Hill on Friday 7th June 6-9pm for a summer garden party to launch OS19, and to celebrate the conclusion of artist Hen Coleman’s Studio Residency at Dorich House.

Kingston Artists Open Studios (KAOS) is an unfunded, voluntary group set up and run by local artists to promote the visual arts in the borough of Kingston. Established in 2010 we are open to artists, sculptors, ceramicists, printmakers, photographers and other crafts people living or working in or around Kingston. With the aim of raising the profile of art in the community, supporting each other and selling our work, KAOS has already made a mark on the visual arts scene in Kingston, with more than 30 exhibitions since we started. Our biggest event is the annual Open Studios, but we also hold regular group exhibitions, which in 2018 included Visually Literate2 at the Menier Gallery, a collaboration between KAOS artists and the creative writers at the King Charles Centre Surbiton. In December we focused on our 3D artists with a group exhibition in Teddington. 2019 has already been a busy year with members exhibiting in Oldenburg, Cologne, Venice, the Venice Biennale, Bermondsey, Mayfair and Richmond. KAOS has strong links to artists in Kingston’s twin town of Oldenburg, Germany with regular collaborations between the two groups. To find out more about KAOS and how to join please visit our website: kingstonartistsopenstudios.co.uk

SPONSORED BY CASS ART, KINGSTON Young KAOS is an art competition open to young artists between the ages of 16 and 19 living in the Kingston area. Congratulations to our 2019 winners FIRST

Stanley Picker Gallery at Kingston University is a public venue dedicated to the commissioning, production and presentation of innovative new art and design practice. From our island location along the Hogsmill River we stage a regular programme of onsite, offsite and online exhibitions, projects and events with award-winning and established contemporary artist and designers, students and local interest groups alike.

Summer Garden Party at Dorich House Museum Friday 7 June 2019, 6-9pm Please join us for refreshments and live music to celebrate the opening of Open Studios 2019, and the conclusion of our Studio Residency with artist Hen Coleman. Dorich House Museum is the former studio home of the sculptor Dora Gordine and her husband the Hon. Richard Hare. The building was completed in 1936, to Gordine’s design, and is an exceptional example of a modern studio house created by and for a female artist. Hen Coleman Black Wood Dorich House Museum Studio Residency 2019 – Until July 2019 Hen Coleman is a graduate of the University of the Creative Arts (2003) with a Masters in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art, London (2006). Her studio practice is based in Oxfordshire, and for the spring and summer of 2019 at Dorich House Museum, Kingston. Her residency, entitled Black Wood, will involve making a new body of drawings, using charcoal which the artist intends to make herself from the wide variety of woods available from the Museum gardens and neighbouring Richmond Park. The work will also include the creation of a series of podcasts, recorded whilst walking with invited collaborators throughout the park and gardens. The resulting landscapes will be presented within Dora Gordine’s studio, forming a re-interpretation of the building’s natural surroundings.

Erika Tan – Stanley Picker Gallery Fellow in Fine Art Onsite Residency April - December 2019 Erika Tan is currently based in an onsite studio, researching and preparing new work ahead of her Gallery exhibition in early 2020. Tan’s most recent research has focused on the history the Gallery’s island location – a site of production and former Cocoanut Mill – along the Hogsmill River, and her mother’s lifetime body of artwork. Tan works with archival artefacts, exhibition histories, received narratives, contested heritage, subjugated voices, and the transnational movement of ideas, people and objects; her future projects point towards the digitization of collective cultural memory and cloud architecture through the prism of ruins, hauntings, and mnemonic collapse. Visit the gallery to meet the artist. https://www.erikatan.net 66 Erika Tan (2018)
