Ruddigore finds Gilbert and Sullivan in an English Pastoral mood with some of Sullivan’s most memorable and attractive music. The small Cornish village of Rederring is home to a chorus of professional bridesmaids hoping that pretty Rose Maybud will soon marry; a bad Baronet and his wronged younger brother; an ardent sailor, the deranged mad Margaret and the fearsome Dame Hannah. Not the least of their problems is a family portrait gallery which does not take kindly to its wishes being defied when it’s descendant refuses to carry out the required “one crime a day” imposed by an ancient curse. Will it all turn out happily? What could possibly go wrong? Oh yes, it’s also very funny.
