or the first time in the history of independent India, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will emerge as the single largest party in poll bound Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). Mumbai's bookies, currently operating from the country's capital, who had rightly predicted the national election results in May this year and even the outcome of Maharashtra polls in October, believe that BJP might manage to win a handsome chunk of seats in the Muslim dominated Kashmir valley. “Considering this, it is being strongly predicted that the party would be forming the government in J&K in December and the business is expected to be around Rs.10,000 crore by the punters,” informed sources in the illegal 'satta bazaar.' BJP being in majority at the Centre, getting maximum seats in Maharashtra and prime minister Narendra Modi's rallies are the major factors that is responsible for the momentum in J&K elections. Post J&K elections, if BJP becomes the leading party there and manages to appoint its chief minister then it would set an historic point in the politics of India and J&K as a whole, added the sources. BJP can win up to 35 seats in the total 87 seats of J&K assembly, in which Jammu has 37 seats and Ladakh has meagre four. The bookies are willing to pay Rs 2.25 on every rupee bet on the BJP winning 35 seats in J&K, said few Mumbai based punters, have placed lakhs of rupees worth bets on the J&K elections. “The party gaining higher votes in the Hindu dominated Jammu is an accepted factor,” said the bookie adding that surprisingly, for the first time, even the Muslim youths from the valley are attracted to the saffron party. The reason cited by the bookies is that tourism being a chief source of income for people in J&K and PM Modi and BJP Continued on pg 8 «

ith increasing number of cases of molestation and rapes in the city, the police seem to be scrutinising cases which have been falsely filed to implicate innocent persons. One such incident came to light on Monday after two women who posed as beggars, were arrested by the Vakola police for filing a false complaint against a 45-year-old man who had refused to pay them money. A city-based NGO has issued its report on the state of policing and law and order in Mumbai. It states that rape cases have increased by 47 per cent this year as compared to the last year while molestation cases increased by 52 per cent as compared to the last year. In a fresh case, the Vakola police have arrested two women on charges of extortion, threatening and cheating. The modus operandi

According to the police, the women showed the businessman some injury marks and told him that they needed treatment. The complainant ignored them and was subsequently threatened by the duo. He immediately informed the police. Meanwhile, the accused approached the Vakola police to register a case against the businessman. he 26/11 terror attack, a series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days occurred across Mumbai, which began on November 26 and lasted until Saturday, 29 November 2008, killing 164 people and wounding at least 308, but after this attack so many changes have been made to modernize the Mumbai Police force as well as Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Six years have passed since this attack which Mumbaikars as well as the nation will never forget in their lives. However after this attack, ATS has improved themselves and made

so many changes in their working style due to which they are ready to tackle any terrorist activity or attack in the city. According to ATS sources, ''After 26/11 attack ,co-ordination of ATS with other national agencies has shot up, the modernisation of equipments, and information network has been improved. Now all police stations in Mumbai have their own Anti Terrorism Cell (ATC) which keeps tabs on any terror related activity in their respective locality.” Talking to ADC, ATS state chief Himanshu Roy said, “After the attack we had improved our network at grassroot level, many changes at Himanshu Roy, ATS chief

administration level were seen as well on training basis. Yes, it is true that ATS is ready to tackle any terror attack.'' “Our ATC cell in every police station is also collecting relevant information from their areas which help us to round up the youths who are involved in any anti-social activity. ATS always stood for the betterment of the Mumbaikars,” Roy said further. Eight of the attacks occurred in South Mumbai: at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital (a women and children's hospital), the Nariman House (Jew-

ish community centre), the Metro Cinema and in a lane behind the Times of India building and St. Xavier's College. There was also an explosion at Mazagaon, in Mumbai's port area, and in a taxi at Vile Parle. By the early morning of November 28, all sites except for the Taj hotel had been secured by Mumbai Police and security forces. On November 29, India's National Security Guards (NSG) conducted 'Operation Black Tornado' to flush out the remaining attackers; it resulted in the deaths of the last remaining attackers at the Taj hotel and ending all fighting in the attacks. isturbing crime statistics reveal that Mumbai is in urgent need of change in the area of law enforcement. The city is fast becoming an extremely unsafe place to live in, if a report released by Praja Foundation is to be believed. Of the respondents, 32 per cent felt insecure about living in the city and 37 per cent do not feel secure while travelling within Mumbai. Why is this? Recently released reports by Praja suggest that a combination of low conviction rates and high levels of under staffing in the police force have resulted in the crumbling of law and order in Mumbai, leading to a rise in criminal activity. Praja’s annual reports in the past four years present some startling data regarding conviction rates in criminal cases. Although conviction rates in Class II serious offences (cases involving bodily harm, murder, rape, grievous hurt, kidnapping, abduction etc.) improved slightly from 7 per cent in 2012 to 8 per cent in 2013, they are still very less – 92 per cent of those charge sheeted have got away scot free. Overall, the conviction rate remains at 22 per cent. “This is a low figure. To maintain law and order in the city, it is imperative that these figures rise. Low conviction rates lead to thriving crime and, consequently, an unsafe city. A third of Mumbai’s population feels unsafe in its own home. Crime has flour-

As the city observes six years of the horrific terror attack at Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus on November 26, 2008. the railway policemen and other security agencies have taken various steps to keep the railway network terror free in their dogged bid to always protect the passengers.

32 per cent Mumbaikars feel insecure in this city: Praja report Under staffing and multiplicity of tasks in the Mumbai Police Force is compromising investigation, thereby leading to low conviction rates ished all over the state’s capital, and we must question why there has been such a sharp rise, despite having a police force that is honour bound to protect the citizens. Perturbing figures have emerged for the North Mumbai area, which recorded the highest number of chain snatching incidents (487 incidents, an increase of 84 per cent) in 2013-14. 44 per cent of the respondents find North Mumbai an unsafe area to live in. North Mumbai figures show that, since most of them called the police helpline numbers of 100/103 etc. (65 per cent), which are manned by a distressingly understaffed Control Room (deficit of 47 per cent personnel), many of the complaints failed to be registered appropriately,” stated Nitai Mehta, Founder and Managing Trustee of Praja Foundation. Milind Mhaske, Project Director of Praja, argues, “There is obviously an urgent need to upgrade and increase staff in the Control Room, so

that cases get the attention they deserve and crime does not go unreported. This can, perhaps, go to explain why there are high instances of crimes such as chain snatching and house breaking in Mumbai. In 2013-14, chain snatching has gone up by 66 per cent, theft, by 19 per cent, rioting by 8 per cent. These are the crimes that really affect people’s perception of the city. And that perception is that, currently, Mumbai is not the safe and secure place that it once was. “On the whole, however, North Central Mumbai remains the area where registered crime is most rampant, with 734 cases of housebreaking, 1,598 cases of theft and 819 cases of vehicle theft. Under staffing and multiplicity of tasks in the Mumbai Police Force is compromising investigation and thereby leading to low conviction rates. A fully manned force will mean that the officers handling criminal cases will focus solely on these investigations, rather than

being called on to man roadblocks and performing bandobast duties.” Consequently, cases that make their way to the courts will be watertight and there will be an assurance that the guilty will be convicted. According to the Praja report, currently the city has a sanction of 41,643 personnel; but only 37,159 are working as of now; a shortfall of almost 11 per cent. Due to the huge gap between sanctioned and available IOs (Investigating Officers), investigations have not been conducted in an organised manner. Mhaske said, “A study of acquitted cases shows that the chief reason for acquittal has been ‘lack of evidence’. This, in turn, showcases the performance of the IO, the public prosecutor and the lack of coordination between the two”.” However, Nitai Mehta said that priority must be given to training and staffing the police force so that it is strong enough to handle the crises a large and populated city like

Mumbai throws at it. “Issues related to crime and its curtailment must be a regular topic of deliberations. MLAs must be constantly engaged with the citizens as well as the police force to keep a diligent eye on the law and order situation in the city. Only then will Mumbai become a safe and peaceful city to live in,” Mehta added.

SWITZERLAND’S SNOW-COVERED MOUNTAINS? As white seagulls soar over the Arabian Sea, look at these students, as they try to snap the flying white beauties on Tuesday morning at the Girgaum Chowpatty.

Tea-vendor travels round the world with wife While we may cry and crib about how we can never save enough for a trip, here is one man who proves everyone wrong with his will-power and determination, supported by his wife. Vijayan (65), owning a tiny tea shop in Kochi, has been a tea-seller for over 40 years, but that hasn’t stopped him and his wife from touring almost every scenic destination in India along with a whopping 16 other countries – Britain, France, Austria, Egypt, UAE, the list goes on. His tea-stall is his only source of income. Life was not easy on Vijayan while he was growing up. Trips with his father to almost all temples in Kerala triggered his passion for travelling; however his father’s death brought all possibilities of travelling to a standstill as he took up all family responsibilities. It was only in 1988 that he resumed travelling when he accompanied a man as his cook on a pilgrimage to the Himalayas. Vijayan refers to his wife Mohana as his permanent travel partner. The couple have explored exotic cities, all on their own. Belonging to a very poor family, Mohana says that she never dreamt of a life like this. Switzerland is her favourite among the places the couple has visited. For Vijayan, every experience was different, right from trudging through the deserts of UAE to heading down the magnificent Nile river in Egypt, Nile being one of the spots he wishes to visit again. It’s hasn't been easy for the couple to sustain such a lifestyle. The only way out for them to pursue their love for travelling was via help through bank loans. Despite all financial insecurities, the couple would take a loan, travel to a foreign destination, come back and spend the next three years repaying the debt they owed, and the cycle would go on. Vijayan follows a very simple funda for saving money. He saves Rs 300 a day for tickets and spends just USD 10 on picking up souvenirs from the places of visit. They may have travelled to 16 countries, but the United States of America has still not received these guests. Their last trip was to Europe in 2012. Considering their age, the couple in recent times have faced difficulties in getting loans to finance their next dream destination. But all is not lost, believes Vijayan. Somehow “I will be able to visit the US”, he says. Interestingly, Vijayan is stubborn about not

leaving his wife behind on any of the tours that he undertakes.

Love in a living-in relationship

We now claim to live in an 'liberal' and 'modern' society of live-in relationships and extra marital affairs, but a couple in Kerala has been doing something exceptional for the last 40 years. They held out against the social institution of marriage, holding strong to their views that their love did not need the sanctity of a ‘thaali’ (mangalsutra). Barely out of their teens, the two made the decision to live together and that is what they did for the

Kunjunkunju and Leelamani

next four decades – live, work, have a child and nurture family – the thought of legalising their union never occurred to Kunjukunju and Leelamani of Kottayam district in Kerala. But on November 7, 2014, Kunjukunju decided to legalise his relationship with his long-term partner to help ease administrative hurdles that faced their young grandchildren. He says that it was their ideology to live together without legalising the relation, but he did not want it to affect his children’s future. He could not bear to see his son's struggle to secure a caste certificate for his third child because of the lack of legal papers to prove his parentage. Government officers in their village Ettumanoor had refused to issue one till Kunjukunju and Leelamani produced a legal document confirming their married status. The two insist that they love each other more than any other married couple around them and thus never found a necessity of a legal binding.

Nana Patekar making biopic on social worker Baba Amte N

oted Bollywood actor Nana Patekar is donning the director's hat again with a biopic on renowned social worker late Baba Amte and he will also portray the powerful titular character. The 63-year-old actor, whose last directorial venture was 'Prahaar: The final Attack' in 1991, said the film will also focus on Baba's son and social worker Prakash. Nana Patekar and Sonali Kulkarni talk to the media at the International Film Festival of India in Goa on Tuesday.

"I am making a film on Baba Amte. It would be a trilingual release – English, Hindi and Marathi. I will be playing the lead role. Apart from Baba, the film will focus on Prakash's character as well. I am playing both the roles," Patekar told PTI in an interview on the sidelines of the ongoing International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here. One of the country's most

respected social leaders, Baba Amte, who died in 2008, devoted his life to the care and rehabilitation of leprosy patients. The national-awardwinning actor, whose film 'Dr Prakash Baba Amte: The Real Hero' in which he plays the protagonist, is running houseful in theatres even in its seventh week, said he was actually approached for play-

ing Baba Amte in his latest Marathi release, but he rejected the role. "I was actually offered the role of Baba Amte in 'Dr Prakash Baba Amte...', but I refused to play the role because I was already researching for my film on him. So, my director (Samruddhi Porey) offered me the role of Prakash and I did it after preparing for two months for it," he said. Patekar said his film on Baba Amte is currently in thescripting stage and he is planning to start shooting early next year. "There is so much literature on Baba Amte and when I am making a biopic on him, I have to be very careful in choosing my content. Baba had quite an eventful life and focusing those relevant parts are my priority," he said. Patekar has to be muscular to play the role of Baba Amte, who was a trained wrestler in his life. "I have to work on my body too for the film. I am sure that I would be beefed up in a few months. I have a very normal lifestyle and it won't be a problem to bring about changes in my body," he said.

Is there a formula?’ They addressed various aspects of maximizing a film’s potential and shared experiences on Film Bazaar as a mentorship platform for a film maker. An afternoon session saw Rajeev Masand in conversation with noted film maker Karan Johar discussing what goes behind nurturing and mentoring the future star actors and directors of Bollywood. At the Producer’s Lab, sessions were held on ’How Not to Mess Up on Post’ with Editor and Post-Producer Vijay Venkatramanan and ‘An Introduction to the CNC Fund’ by Emmanuelle Deprats. Started in 2008, Film Bazaar has come a long way and become a sought after annual film market that connects filmmakers with producers, distributors and critics. This year’s Film Bazaar marked many new beginnings besides creating networking opportunities for mainstream as well as new film makers and saw participation of about 1050 delegates from over 38 countries. Film Bazaar also promoted co-productions by facilitating collaborations among potential domestic and international partners. According to Nina Lath Gupta Managing Director, NFDC India, “The response at the 8th edition of Film Bazaar has been overwhelming. We are truly pleased to see that our endeavor to encourage and showcase the film talent of India and South Asia at a global level, has reached new heights. What started as an idea eight years ago has evolved into a vital annual film event that the film fraternity looks forward to, year after year.”

IFFI goofs up on top Columbian actress’ name

The actress of 'Los Hongos', Angela Garcia talks to the media at the 45th International Film Festival of India (IFFI-2014), in Panaji, Goa on Tuesday.

I

n a goof-up, the name of popular Columbian actress Angela Garcia was wrongly mentioned as Alicia on the event schedule at the ongoing International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here. The 'Los Hongos' actress, who is on her maiden visit to India, was introduced as Alicia Garcia in the event schedule, leaving journalists in a tizzy. "Her name was wrongly mentioned as Alicia, but we corrected the mistake at the last minute when the name plate was changed to her

original name," said one of the organisers. The actress was unfazed by the goof-up in her name during the press conference for her film 'Los Hongos' in IFFI's International Cinema section. The festival, since it began on November 20, has witnessed many goof-ups, resulting in chaotic situation in its grand opening function which was attended by megastars Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, besides several senior Union ministers and officials.

hile there had been chaos and delay at the Mumbai University (MU) to dispatch the final year mark sheets, the University has now started a new initiative to deliver the mark sheets online. MU says that, the online mark sheet will reduce the delay in mark sheets and students will get their mark sheets by just logging on the website. Yesterday, a major decision was declared at the University's Management Council meeting. The MU has taken the initiative to start National Academic Depository (NAD) to maintain national level database of all academic qualifications. Now students, can obtain mark sheets and degrees from this electronic database. The NAD will facilitate online verification and easy retrieval of academic records thereby removing the need to physically approach the educational institutions to obtain attestations, transcripts of certificates. Database also deals with issues of forged certificates since it enables online verification. The MU will begin this new system from the second half of the year and its full fledged implementation will be from next academic year – 201415. The ADC spoke to Dr Rajan Welukar, Vice Chancellor, MU, who said: “Security and

MBMC moots ‘Waste-to-Energy’ plant By Suresh Golani

V

illagers living in the coastal belt of Uttan have reason to rejoice. After battling from unbearable stench emanating from the local solid waste process plant for the past several years, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has finally taken pro-active steps to set up an advanced waste treatment plant using sophisticated technology. The waste management facility mooting 'Waste-toEnergy' incinerator technology will come up at a 13-hectare plot in Sakvar village near Vasai, recently acquired by the civic body. “We had recently floated Expression Of Interest inviting expertise from the field, which garnered a good response and after scrutinising the technologies, we have zeroed it on generation of energy from the garbage generated. We are working on the modalities and will come out with details soon," confirmed civic chief Subhash Lakhe. First in the state to suc-

cessfully initiate the garbage recycling plant in 2008, the unit run by a private agency, under the Built Operate and Transfer model, handled the waste to segregate it and produce organic manure. As of now, the twin-city generates about 450 metric tonnes of garbage on a daily basis. However, given the quantum of solid waste generated, the holding capacity of the plant is inadequate, prompting the MBMC to seek an alternative. Moreover going by its faulty geographic location and adverse environmental impact, there was virtually

no scope for upgrading the process plant, officials said. Also villagers staying in the vicinity of the plant had been facing numerous problems due to the stench emanating from the plant, which had also led to violent agitations. Following a civic writ petition (1740/1998) filed in this context, a divisional bench of the Mumbai High Court had passed strictures to implement a time-bound action plan for treatment and process of solid waste taking into account an anticipated 30-year-growth in the existing population.

Within 9 months, 2 of Kadam's students have bagged silver medals at a national event

e's a humble auto rickshaw driver with a noble and selfless mission. Meet 36-year-old Vinod Namdev Kadam, who in an admirable show of community spirit has been imparting karate training to students of Navghar Municipal School in Bhayandar (East). However, Kadam’s name doesn't figure on the panel of teachers of the civic-run school. While others take salaries, he trains the children for free. Officially, though no outsider is allowed to teach in government schools, the intervention of municipal corporator-Prabhat 'Tai' Patil, led to an exception made by the former municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani for Kadam considering his passion to impart lessons and practical training for effective self-defence techniques. A native of Sonwadi village in Satara, Kadam is a Third Dan Black Belt who finished his schooling in Worli while staying with his paternal uncle. Post marriage, he shifted to Shirdi Nagar in Bhayandar (E) and started driving an auto-rickshaw to make ends meet. However, despite being bogged down by financial restraints, Kadam retained his passion for the sport and was eager to impart karate training to those who loved karate but could not afford the fees. “ Fortunately I met Tai who made a representation to the

civic chief and finally I was allowed to train the students in the school ground premises,” Kadam said. As of now, 30 students from the school attend the twice-a-week training sessions which started off from February this year. And most importantly, within a short span of nine months, Kadam has delivered overwhelming success. Two of his students – Yash Sachin Jadhav (under 10 years category) and Shivdin Yadav (under 14 years category) have made their school and teacher proud by bagging silver medals in the recently held second edition of the National Tang Soo Do Championship, in Kurukshetra, Haryana. Kadam too bagged his second consecutive gold medal in the event which saw the participation of more than 16 teams from across the country including those from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.

NS Cares Foundation (WCF) which aims at educating under-privileged children globally celebrated Global Impact Day yesterday. The day was celebrated by organising a Cast-a-Spell global spelling competition conducted across various global locations in schools that WCF works with. Children were given word banks to memorise and they were also provided with WCF volunteers who became mentors and teachers and helped them memorise words through innovative ways. The competition went through the classlevel, school-level, location-level and finally, national-level rounds. The winners in three distinct categories across different countries competed against each other using the virtual medium. There where a total of 36 schools which participated and 26,470 students took part. Participants were from India, Poland, Philippines, Romania, South Africa and Sri Lanka. The winners were declared in three categories on the basis of their ages; 6 to 9 years winner was Tejaswini Reddy, St George School, Bengaluru, India, 10 to 12 years winner was Nikhil Patil, Nashik, India and 13 to 15 years winner was Sisipho Tukushe, Yomelela School Cape Town, South Africa. The high voter turnout during the first phase of elections at J&K gives confidence to bookies that Omar Abdullah led government would not be spared by the anti-incumbency wave. In 2009, the National Conference (NC) led by the Abdullahs, had won 28 seats in the state and was ruling with the support from the Congress, which had only 17 seats. Meawhile, J&K elections are being conducted in six phases and results would be out on December 23. In Jharkhand, which had 81 assembly seats the BJP is expected to win at least 25 seats. Bookies are willing to pay Rs 1.40 on every rupee bet if BJP wins 35 seats in the state.

Due to intense pressure from the saffron party, the bookies had skipped the 2014 Maharashtra elections. "The bookies did not give any odds during Maharashtra elections as there was tremendous pressure from the saffron brigade to portray them in majority," said a city-based bookie.

axi unions have made a proposal to the Transport Commissioner Mahesh Zagade on Tuesday regarding making the Black and Yellow taxis air-conditioned. The proposal will be presented to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) soon. Owing to competition from Transport Commissioner Zagade had also directed the employees of all the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) to finish their respective pending work before November 30. It includes issuing and renew of licenses, renewal of permits, transferring of vehicles etc. There were 17,000 licenses pending with the RTOs to be issued and renewed. The special drive taken up by the RTO regarding pending work will be concluded by December 30.

various companies like Uber, Ola cabs, Meru, Tab Cab and others, the taxi union wants ACs to be installed in taxis so that passengers are comfortable and the journey becomes enjoyable. However, the union has not demanded any fare hike after the installation of air conditioners. Talking to the ADC, Mahesh Zagade, Transport Commissioner, said, “I have directed them to present the proposal to the MMRTA. Once the matter is taken up in the MMRTA, a decision will be taken.” Speaking to the ADC, A L Quadros, leader, Mumbai Taximen Union, said, “Other companies pose a major threat to the black and yellow taxis. If no action is taken, nobody will prefer using black and yellow cabs. We want to provide our passengers good service and do not want to charge a single rupee for it.” Talking about the MMRTA rule which states 25 per cent increase in fare hike for the air-conditioned taxis,

Quadros said, “The rule is for the cool cabs and anyway there are less than 3,000 cool cabs available in Mumbai. We will serve our passengers without charging any extra money. However, if the taxi driver does his job correctly the passenger will get impressed by him and give him some tip. Initially, the taxi driver may have to face the brunt, but the taxi drivers will be benefited in the long run as it will be a hit on the competitors and the passengers will be benefited.”

tate Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse on Tuesday dismissed criticism by Shiv Sena by taking a jibe at the Thackeray family's non-rural, non-farming background. He defended his yesterday's remarks over non-payment of electricity bills by farmers. "My remarks were projected out of context. What I said was in the interest of the farmers," Khadse told PTI. "They (farmers) pay their mobile bills month after month because they do not want their phone connection to get disconnected. They know if their phone gets disconnected, they will not be able to speak to anyone... If they have money to pay their mobile bills, then why don't they have money to pay their electricity bills? They should make it a habit to pay off bills and loans," Khadse had said on Monday at Akola. It prompted the Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray to say that BJP ministers were now emulating the erstwhile Congress-NCP ministers. Khadse dismissed Uddhav’s comment by saying "I don't need lessons from anyone. Those who don't know whether the groundnut grows underground or above the ground should not teach me. Those who have not seen a farm are advising me. I am a farmer myself." Interestingly, NCP chief Sharad Pawar has often responded to Sena's criticism in the same vein.

Cleaning up Mithi I

t looks like the cleaning up of river Mithi in the city may go on for ever. There is also doubt whether the cleaning up has ever begun. A lot of money has gone down the river. The BMC says the cleaning-up of the river is no easy job. There are so many issues which have to be settled: for instance, residents along the river banks do not move away from the place. They want the river to remain as it is. The water of the river is used for multiple purposes. The water is dirty and it could be a breeding ground for deadly mosquitoes. The BMC identified hundreds of mosquito breeding spots in the city. It does not seem to have however seen the threat posed by the Mithi to the city. It is possible there is already a plan for making maximum use of the river. To implement the plan, huge funds are required. The BMC has no funds to carry out any plan. To implement the plan, huge funds are required. Neither the state or central governments, it has become clear, were willing to give funds for implementing any Mithi project. With the changed political situation however, there is hope that a big Mithi project might be carried out: With the BJP at the centre and in the state in power, it should be possible to get the required funds. Compared to Ganga, Mithi pales into insignificance but even so, with some allocation of funds, Mithi can be hugely beneficial to Mumbai in many ways.

HE Supreme Court will decide whether Narayanaswami Srinivasan can seek another term as BCCI president. In the meantime, movers and shakers in the world of cricket administration are already working on a Plan B in case the Court rules against Srinivasan. Plan B seems to be turning into a race between former BCCI strongman Jagmohan Dalmiya and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Shukla to bag the coveted post of BCCI president. Dalmiya may have the edge because of his previous record as head of the cricketing body. It was he who turned Indian cricket into a world power. But Shukla is not a lightweight opponent, given his network of contacts across the political spectrum. Many believe that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will have the final word in this contest. Although he is formally out of the BCCI (he doesn’t hold any position now), he maintains an active interest in cricket and is still an influential figure because of the votes he can swing. He is believed to have the largest number of votes under his belt including three votes of government bodies represented in the BCCI. Both Shukla and Dalmiya are actively wooing Jaitley these days. But the BJP leader is keeping his cards close to his chest as he waits for the Supreme Court’s final word on Srinivasan.

T seems former health minister Harsh Vardhan’s clash with the Medical Council of India (MCI) may have had something to do with the change of his portfolio in the recent cabinet reshuffle. When he took over the health ministry, one of his first promises was a vow to clean up the MCI which is embroiled in several corruption controversies. According to sources in the BJP, Vardhan fell foul of the powers that rule the roost in the MCI. These include the present president Jayshreeben Mehta and the former president Ketan Desai who mentored Mehta into her position as MCI head. Interestingly, both hail from Gujarat and are reported to have a hotline to the Modi camp. BJP circles believe that Vardhan was a victim of Gujarati politics. While Vardhan camp followers are putting up a brave face to claim that BJP president Amit Shah has plans to rope him in for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, the message that has gone out is this: the man who was once pitched as the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for Delhi has fallen out of

HEN you cry for yourself, is it love — crying because you are lonely, because you have been left, because you are no longer powerful — complaining of your lot — always you in tears? If you understand this, which means to come in contact with it as directly as you would touch a tree or a pillar or a hand, then you will see that sorrow is self-created, sorrow is created by thought, sorrow is the outcome of time. I had my brother three years ago, now he is dead, now I am lonely, aching, there is no one to whom I can look for comfort or companionship, and it brings tears to my eyes. You can see all this happening inside yourself if you watch it. You can see it fully, completely, in one glance, not take analytical time over it. You can see in a moment the whole structure and nature of this shoddy little thing called ‘me', my tears, my family, my nation, my belief, my religion — all that ugli-

ness, it is all inside you. When you see it with your heart, not with your mind, when you see it from the very bottom of your heart, then you have the key that will end sorrow. Sorrow and love cannot go together, but in some religions they have idealized suffering, implying that you can never escape from suf-

MATTER & SPIRIT fering except through that one particular door, and this is the whole structure of an exploiting religious society. So when you ask what love is, you may be too frightened to see the answer. It may mean complete upheaval; it may break up the family; you may discover that you do not love your wife or husband or children — do you? — you may have to shatter the house you have built, you may never go back to the temple.

ARENDRA Modi got his first taste of Nepalese sensitivities about the BJP’s brand of political Hindutva when he was forced to call off his planned visit to Sita’s birthplace, Janakpur, because of protests in Nepal that his decision to address a public rally there was an infringement of Nepal’s sovereignty. It seems Modi’s hopes of paying obeisance at Sita’s birthplace are jinxed. He had wanted to schedule a trip to Janakpur when he visited Nepal in August as part of his goodwill gestures to the neighbours. That time, the excuse was inadequate time for security arrangements. This time, it’s clear that there is considerable local opposition. The presence of a Hindutva icon at a place associated with Hindu mythology stokes fears of Hindu revivalism and the possible return of the monarchy which the Nepalese managed to oust with great difficulty less than a decade ago. Modi has received two reality checks from the world of international diplomacy recently. One was from Nepal about his Janakpur visit which was being seen as a slap for Nepalese nationalism. The other was from Germany over Smriti Irani’s decision to replace German with Sanskrit in Kendriya Vidyalayas. No less a person than the German Chancellor Angela Merkel protested to the PM about this. A muscular foreign policy is easy to talk about, but not so easy to implement. But if you still want to find out, you will see that fear is not love, dependence is not love, jealousy is not love, possessiveness and domination are not love, responsibility and duty are not love, self-pity is not love, the agony of not being loved is not love, love is not the opposite of hate any more than humility is the opposite of vanity. So if you can eliminate all these, then perhaps you will come upon this strange flower which man always hungers after. If you have not got love — not just in little drops but in abundance — the world will go to disaster. You know that the unity of mankind is essential and that love is the only way, but who is going to teach you how to love? Will any authority, any method, any system, tell you how to love? If anyone tells you, it is not love. Can you say, “I will practice love. I will sit down day after day and think about it. I will practice being kind and gentle and force myself to pay attention to others?' — Jiddu Krishnamurti

Sanskritising education or reviving culture? ON the face of it the Sanskrit Shikshak Sangh (SSS), a teachers’ association, seems to have taken up a noble cause of reviving an ancient language. It has even adopted the legal route — approached the court — that prompted the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry to drop German from the curriculum of Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) schools. The ministry is now inspired to take off all foreign languages taught as third language to promote modern Indian languages in schools across the country, including private institutions. It is a curious thing how three years ago German made its way into KV schools when the constitutionally approved threelanguage education policy talks about promoting one Indian language alongside English and Hindi. However, the emphasis on making Sanskrit mandatory in schools gives rise to a familiar fear — the saffronisation of education. The manner in which RSS outfits like Sanskrit Bharati are promoting the language — drawing from a book called 'Science in Sanskrit' to bolster their claims of scientific breakthroughs in ancient India — evokes apprehension that dogma

IN view of globalisation of Indian economy, it helps if one knows some foreign language too. I suggest four language formula – compulsory English, Hindi and two optional languages mother tongue/regional language and one foreign language. To start with, every school must have an option of which one foreign language can easily be taken up (for example French, German, Spanish, Japanese etc) and also one of the regional/mother tongues as the school decides. It is practically not possible to have all students’ mother tongue subject in any school. Also Urdu/Sanskrit can be additional optional choice if a school has that facility.

Obesity increases the risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiac diseases By A Staff Reporter

besity is growing at a very high rate in India, with increase in disposable income leading to bad food choices and sedentary lifestyle. “In India, approximately 25 lakh people suffer from obesity, with Body Mass Index of over 30 kg/m2. Asians are also known to have higher body fat percentage and abdominal fat in comparison to their Caucasian counterparts, leading to higher risk of diabetes and cardiac diseases. Abdominal obesity has a direct correlation with heart related problems”, says Dr Manish Motwani, leading obesity surgeon at Aastha Healthcare, Mumbai. According to several research conducted by surgeons in India and abroad, obesity increases the risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension and cardiac diseases.” For a patient with a BMI of 25, prevalence of diabetes is at 4 per cent and the same overshoots to 22 per cent at BMI of 35 and above. In our practice, almost 65 per cent of the patients are suffering from diabetes.” “Similarly, obesity increases the risk of hypertension by six times, and almost 50 per cent of the patients have the disease. Hypertension is also a major risk factor for developing cardiac problems in the future. “One of our patients had BMI of 42.4, suffered from breathlessness, and could not walk even few steps, had severe hypertension and took insulin dosage daily to control

Most of these women have several diseases like Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), infertility and increased risks of various types of cancers because of obesity” Research shows that obesity increases the risk of PCOD by 2.25 times in women with a Body Mass Index more than 30. Dr Motwani says, “PCOD is a risk factor for infertility, and obese women are three times more likely to suffer infertility than women with a normal body mass index. If pregnant, obese women are more likely to experience pregnancy loss. Hormonal changes in overweight and obese women are the main causes for developing such diseases”. Dr. Jayashree Todkar, Director, Department of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Dr. L.H. Hiranandani Hospital, Powai said, “We are

they go to obese category. Once they cross 32.5 BMI, there is a very high possibility of many diseases which are chronic health elements like Type II Diabetes, High cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Infertility, Premature joint problems etc. But it is not necessary that we should wait till these problems gets in your body. If you act in time you can avoid many damages caused due to obesity. Obesity also causes sexual dysfunction, depression, inferiority complex, lethargic condition, hormonal disturbances. Therefore, it's important for us to act in time. Good nutritional food and proper diet along with regular physical activity helps in maintaining fitness and reducing weight gain to some extent. But if the metabolism is not favorable in one’s body, any amount of exercise or diet may not help in the desired outcome. In such situation, metabolic and bariatric surgery is a scientifically proven tool and it can give you the desired effect through modification in metabolism. The above said are known to show a significant reversibility after bariatric surgery because the surgery gives you a successful and sustained weight loss when performed by the hands of experts, with appropriate multi-disciplinary care”. n the mid 1960s, a Kathak exponent created a sensation of sorts by staging a Kathak dance recital for 12 uninterrupted hours at the Birla Matushree Sabhagrah which was the main venue of classical performances in south Bombay in those days. The unique feat of the danseuse was universally applauded and the title ‘Kathak Queen' was bestowed upon her. The danseuse was none other than Sitara Devi who passed away yesterday at the age of 94 in a city hospital. Sitara Devi held strong views on dance, music and the society in general. She did not mince words when it came to criticising the government of the day about the matters of cultural policy. Like sitar maestro Vilayat Khan who doggedly refused to accept the 'Padmavibhushan' title offered to him, Sitara Devi too turned down the offer of 'Padmabhushan'. One would often spot her attending music and dance programmes almost till the end of her life. Her presence and her occasional comments would spice up the atmosphere. Her last public appearance as a dance exponent was at the Rakhal Mishra memorial samaroh held at Bhavan's Andheri (West) in March 2011. It was a token appearance but the audience applauded her effort. Sitara Devi had a close connection with the Bombay film industry. Sitara Devi, in those days, lived an unconventional life which has been chronicled by the great story teller Sadat Hasan Manto. She was born as Dhannolakshmi in Kolkata in 1920 to a family of Brahmin kathakar Sukhdev Maharaj and chose school and dance over an early wedding, as was the norm of the 1920s. Her father, a Vaishnavite Brahmin scholar and Kathak

exponent, sent her to a local school where she impressed her teachers and the local media with her performance in a dance drama, Savitri Satyavan. When her father learnt of it, he re-christened her as Sitara or the star and placed her under the care of her older sister for Kathak training. Kathak, which literally means katha, is a narrative drama which evolved out of the Krishna temples of hinterland to scale the pinnacle of glory in the Muslim courts. By the time Sitara Devi turned 11, the family moved to Mumbai, where she impressed Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore with a three-hour solo recital. Tagore offered her a shawl and Rs 50 which Sitara Devi refused and sought his blessings instead to become a great dancer. Sitara, who started learning Kathak at the age of seven under the guidance of her father Sukhdev Maharaj, gave many dance sequences in Hindi movies including her debut in Usha Haran, Nagina, Roti, Vatan, Anjali and Mother India. Sukhdev Maharaj faced opposition in his community for promoting the dance form and teaching it to his sons and

daughters but with a glittering six-decade long career, Sitara fulfilled her father's dream of reviving and popularising the dance form. She became a Kathak legend and was a pioneering force in bringing the genre to Bollywood. She also got inspired from the environment around her — whether it is a town or a village. She was honoured with the Legends of India Lifetime Achievement Award 2011 for her contribution to the classical dance genre for over six decades. Apart from her mastery in Kathak, Sitara was wellversed with other dance styles as well such as Bharatanatyam and several forms of folk dances of India. She also learnt the Russian ballet. She also taught Kathak to Bollywood celebrities like Madhubala, Rekha, Mala Sinha and Kajol. Sitara Devi married director K Asif of Mughal-e-Azam fame and then Pratap Barot. In his condolence message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled her rich contribution to Kathak. She was vitality personified and will continue to inspire generations of dancers. — (With inputs from Amarendra Dhaneshwar)

Anup Jalota shattered as wife Medha passes away E

OUR RIGHTS: On the eve of ‘Indian Constitution Day’, Chembur residents create a replica of the ‘Indian Constitution’ for Wednesday’s'Samvidhan Rally' at Chembur.

minent bhajan and ghazal singer and Bollywood movie producer Anup Jalota was emotionally shattered when doctors attending to his wife Medha (in her late 50s) at a reputed hospital in New York, informed him that she was “no more”. According to sources, the critical cardiac and renal transplant procedures had apparently been done and Medha seemed quite stable and fine. Subsequently, there were apparent complications, to which she suc-

cumbed, according to Jalota’s spokespersons who were still awaiting further messages from their family. For the previously twicemarried Anup, this third tragedy, comes as yet another shocking trauma. Hailing from an aristocratic family, the elegant Medha happened to be the niece of erstwhile Prime Minister I.K. Gujral. The music-savvy Medha who was formerly married to noted movie director Shekhar Kapur, was known for her outspoken nature and candid

reactions. Several years ago, Medha, had undergone a series of intensive treatments and a critical heart-transplant procedure in New York with husband Anup constantly supporting her. This time again she was required to undergo further intensive procedures and flown to New York in August. Their young son Aryaman who is pursuing higher studies in the US also rushed to be with his mother as she fought her final battle with death. — Inputs by Chaitanya Padukone

Have you ever wondered what kind of work has gone into that new single you heard on the radio? Or the cool music in that new ad? There’s music all around us, across almost all media, and yet we somehow believe that we can’t have a career as a musician

T

he average piece of music you come across has a composer, a lyricist, a producer, an arranger, musicians that performed it, recording engineers, mixing engineers, mastering engineers and a whole industry of media and marketing professionals behind it. All of these are viable career options. Being a performing artist is one of the most sought-after careers because it carries with it fame and fortune for those who break into the top bracket, and it remains a dream for many. Music production happens more behind the scenes, but it is just as creative a career, if not

more. Producers need to have a good working knowledge of their hardware and software tools, and these skills can be learned in degree and diploma programmes offered by institutes such as the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music (SAM), ILM Academy and Beatfactory Academy. Continued on pg 14 «

MORE ON MBA:

I am currently studying for my CA IPCC exam. Of late, I have lost interest in studying. I wish to pursue fashion designing. Can I quit CA and pursue fashion designing? What are the courses I can apply for? – Payal You may take up or quit from any course. But before you plunge into a decision, identify the real reason for loss of interest and sudden interest in a new course. Try to take a decision with an objective approach after taking into account the abilities, finances, parental support, and so on. There are a number of colleges, polytechnics as well as private institutes offering courses on fashion designing. You can opt for any such course. As these course duration ranges from 1-3 years and also can be done either full-time or part-time; please take the help of internet/Info line services for the listings of colleges. You can log on to the respective college's website for detailed information regarding the college. I have completed my TYBSc (Computer Science) in two attempts. I want to pursue MBA. I don’t want to do a full-time course. Can I do it part-time? I am not interested in IT and want to pursue something related to commerce. Please suggest some courses. —Abhijit For the three-year part-time management course you need two to three years' work experience. You can opt for one-year part-time Diploma course or consider any distance learning programmes in any of the management field of your choice as offered by various colleges and B-schools. I am a microbiology graduate. I want to pursue part-time MBA in Hospital and Health care management. Does the part-time MBA hold as much weightage as a full-time course? Where can I find job openings after this course? – Kirti

Part-time management programmes are ideally meant for working people who wish to earn as well as learn simultaneously. Acquiring the knowledge and applying them in a practical life situation is more important than the nature of the course. Educational qualification coupled with the skill-set go a long way in determining the career growth than compared to the nature of course be it parttime or full-time. Salary, scope and similar issues depends on your caliber, specialisation, the policies of the company, the economic scenario, various policies and so on. As long as the programme is approved by the regulatory body, you wouldn't have any problems. After completing a management course related to healthcare, job openings would be in the hospitals and healthcare business only. Making Music Continued from pg 13 « Formal careers for musicians, producers and sound engineers in films, radio and television have existed for decades. While the roles may have changed with the times, the essence remains the same. COMMERCIAL MUSIC AND FILMS Commercial music in India is synonymous with film music. Each film made creates a multitude of jobs for composers, music directors, programmers, lyricists, live musicians and also professionals on the production side, with recording engineers, mixing engineers, mastering engineers, producers and more. Vocalists and playback singers are held almost at par with the lead actors in a movie, in terms of the fame and celebrity status. This opens up many further avenues in allied media – TV shows, reality shows, interviews, news and other coverage are part of the package. Remuneration starts out low but even a single hit can mean skyrocketing fees and instant stardom. Unlike actors, who can’t afford a flop, singers go relatively unnoticed until their next hit. In the current scenario, not many musicians hold hard qualifications, and many haven’t received formal training in music. This means that given the massive size of the industry and the sheer number of feature film productions, entering the world of music production, composition or engineering for films is a potentially lucrative option for educated musicians.

TELEVISION NETWORKS The Indian TV market is the third largest in the world, reaching 161 million viewers, with over 800 channels. TV alone is expected to be worth over 50,000 crores in 2014. Now each of these TV and news channels hire their own producers and sound engineers, so all the jobs in films have their counterparts in TV and news. While the pay scale is low, the frequency of work and regularity of the job make it a good career.

As many as 245 FM channels were launched in 85 cities since 2005, and 839 more channels are going to be launched in 294 cities. This industry is expected to cross 1500 crores in 2014. Broadcasting music and audio is the primary service a radio station provides, and hence it is a medium that values musicians and audio professionals. Production in these studios includes voice-overs, jingles and promotions, as well as curating music. GAMING AND NEW MEDIA Gaming, led by over 214 million internet

users and 130 million mobile users, is one the fastest growing industries in India, with massive potential in the years to come. Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi/NCR are the main centers for this industry with over 300 game development companies in India right now, the casual gaming revenue in India is set to quadruple by 2015 to USD 244 million. Composers and producers are hired to create music for these games. Sound effects are another category altogether that comes under sound design. This is usually also done by a musician with experience in synthesis. In terms of producing music, it’s not unlike film scoring, however the terms of employment resemble that of software engineers. Unlike most freelance work and studio employment, hours of work are clearly defined and standard HR practices apply. Since these game developers are organised by professional companies, working even as a musician or sound designer carries the same financial security as any IT professional career. ELECTRONIC MUSIC Being an electronic artist is a serious profession these days too. Some of the world’s largest concerts, attended by hundreds of thousands are electronic dance music (EDM) concerts, played by one or just a few DJs. Skrillex, one of the top earners once made USD 200,000 in a single night. India has its share of excellent independent electronic music producers who are steadily putting a fan base together, and we have our own festivals too. There’s a lot more to music production, so if you have the passion for it, make sure you equip yourself with the right knowledge and tools, and you will find success.

issue acutely. Likewise, with increasing concerns about increasing lawlessness, society at large is demanding the fundamental need of security being catered for. There have been numerous examples where people have made a choice to live in safer cities thereby boosting economic growth. This is a key driver for the current plan for Smart Cities to cater for the basic need for ‘safe living’ in their design and planning stage itself. Globally, smart cities deploy efficient use of integrated technology, next generation sensors, digital services and communication systems which can be used to monitor, detect and respond to fire and security incidents with management from advanced Safety and Security Operations Centers. It is obvious that these need to be fully supported by global best practices and processes as well as adequate number and quality of trained manpower resources.

The real estate sector has been instrumental in transforming India from being an underdeveloped country to accelerating its way to a developed country with ‘smart cities’. This has led to an increase in the need for fire engineers

O

By Rajan Luthra, National President of Fire and Security Association of India

ver the last decade, the country has witnessed state of art infrastructure developments, buildings, townships, shopping malls not only in the metropolitan cities but in the Tier II & Tier III towns as well. Additionally, this sector has also provided for employment and livelihood for a huge section of population living under impoverished conditions. The growth in real estate sector has resulted not only in significant development in the residential and commercial segment but also supported the physical and social infrastructure of the country. Now, the government is embarking on another ambitious journey in partnership with the real estate sector to draw a new canvas for urban living. This is the ambitious ‘smart cities’ project which was announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a recent announcement, the cabinet has proposed an initial allocation of Rs 7,060 crore to develop 100 Smart Cities by modernizing some of the existing cities as well as developing some green field cities as well. The overall investment for this major programme shall be many times this amount. But how do you define a Smart City? The term encompasses a vision of an urban space that is ecologically conducive, technologically integrated and planned meticulously, with efficient use of information technology to improve efficiency. The Smart Cities Council, an industry body that advocates the concept in India, describes them as cities that leverage data gathered from smart sensors through a smart grid to create a city that is livable, workable and sustainable. In the Indian context at a basic level, a city that enables its residents to lead a life that is safe

urban areas. This mismatch between slow urban development and much faster rural migration causes unplanned and chaotic urbanisation. In such a situation, civic amenities and essential services are worst hit, thereby leading to a situation where a big chunk of the population is devoid of basic facilities such as sanitation, hygiene, health, clean water, electricity etc. Also tough living conditions and fast-paced construction with the norms being flouted often, leads to a lack of efficient fire safety measures being catered to which proves hazardous to the urban denizens and a big challenge for fire authorities to provide required emergency support. Lack of adequate employment opportunities as well as

the rich-poor divide leads to much higher crime rates which put a bigger pressure on the police. Both these put together lead to higher safety and security risks on the common man. The proposed plan of Smart Cities will boast of smart governance, smart energy, smart environment, smart transportation, smart IT and communications, smart buildings etc but how smart will they be about fire safety and security? Life safety is a major concern and we all are aware of some horrifying incidents that have taken place in the past due to inadequate fire prevention, detection and response measures both in residential and commercial spaces and hence it is imperative for future smart cities to address this

Some key focus areas pertaining to fire safety and security include: A safe city should have a minimum of 100 fire fighters per 1,00,000 population as part of the Fire Brigade team who are supported by emergency response volunteers in case of any fire accident or mishap. For the Top 100 cities in US this number as an average is well over 300. In addition, we also need to have adequate number of well equipped Fire Stations in the vicinity of each locality for faster response to emergency situations. Fire and safety departments need to be equipped to have minimal delay in response to fire alarms. According to the US Fire Administration, the average fire response time is less than eight minutes, with 90 per cent of the calls responded to in less than 11 minutes. This is an ambitious target that the Government must set for itself to emulate as part of the Smart City initiative. Integrated command, control and communication systems need to be used to support fire safety and security or police professionals with monitoring data and SOS calls as well as enable better response management. These need to be suitably adapted for the Indian environment and operators. Employ suitable safety and security sensors connected as a part of the internet of things to aggregate real-time data and then perform advanced analytics and based on the result,

take appropriate action to prevent possible faults from further accentuating into life threatening safety or security hazards. This provides flexibility in terms of prioritizing the usage of safety and security resources to be deployed only when a real situation warrants on-ground attention. City infrastructure should adhere to fire and safety rules especially in institutions like schools, hospitals, old age homes as well as large public aggregations such as malls, etc. Residential apartments higher than 15 meters should have at least six meters of free space around the building to accommodate the Hydraulic Platform. Any building should have at least two staircases that can be used as emergency exits Basic fire safety amenities that residential buildings should have are hose reel, riser, down comer and a hydrant system as part of fire fighting measures Introduce new firefighting techniques and technologies installed in housing colonies and commercial spaces Ultimately, all of us as individuals and corporate (possibly through funding support from Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives) must support the government in a partnership approach in establishing a fire safety and security management program that can be owned by Resident Welfare Associations or Cooperative Housing Societies under the guidance of professional not-for-profit industry bodies to effectively train the residents on fire safety and security tips and build awareness among the people. This will also drive better opportunities for Fire Safety and Security professionals and companies while enabling Safe Living. The grandiose promise of building 100 Smart Cities has been part of the new government’s vision from the outset, and largely the focus will be on infrastructure and to support rising economic growth for qualitatively better urban living. But we cannot have a myriad of issues being considered without having a critical focus on the core human life safety aspects. Otherwise, we may have an enhanced and comfortable lifestyle yet is tantalizingly close to an unfortunate life threatening situation waiting to strike again. The key point is, will we all only keep agreeing to the above point of view or will we put adequate pressure of our expectations on the powers-that-be to make a difference.

KNOWLEDGE, NOT EDUCATION, IS THE KEY “There is a lot of hard work and talent required for a career in acting,” says actor Shivin Narang who plays Ranvijay in 'Veera'

I

am a BBA and BCom graduate from Delhi University. I chose my career in acting because I knew that I will not be able to do a corporate 9 to 5 office job. I always wanted to do something creative and innovative. If not an actor, then definitely I would have been doing something in sports. I always wanted to be an actor and I had that thing in me. I followed my gut feeling. The best thing about my career is that I never get bored while acting because every day I have something new to do. While acting you can do such things which are not as easily possible in your life as a businessman, lawyer or any other profession. I am really enjoying my career as an actor and I am glad I am getting a chance to play different shades. I guess more than education it’s the knowledge that one gains which is important. It has taught me how to work as per rules and regulations. Otherwise acting is completely different from my field in which I studied; there is no relation between my career and my education. But one does get wise with education and knowledge. Education surely broadens your perspective. I never had any training for my acting career. I came to Mumbai, gave a screen test for this show and I got selected. I was right in front of the camera for the screen test. It was a risk but it was worth it. I learnt on the job. I learnt the technicalities and how to express emotions from within. My job profile is to accept the character I am assigned and play the character well, whether it’s a positive, negative or a grey shade. I need to play it the best. I have to accept anything that comes to me in a positive way and give a good performance and show my talent. I haven't done much investment. I just invested in my first portfolio which was really expensive and I had it done with my own hard-earned money. I gave auditions and it worked for me. Remuneration depends on which field of acting one is working – whether in film or television. There is a good scope of earning a lot of money. In my field it’s not only about learning. We are artists and we are here to perform.

It’s not always about money. Remuneration can be anywhere between Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 per day for a beginner. For an established actor it may go to any amount depending upon the calibre and opportunity. An established actor can definitely earn quite well. I actually can’t tell you how many years it would take to become a professional actor because I am in the learning process and there is a lot to come my way. Acting has to come from within. I have just started my journey and by God’s grace it is going quite well. It’s a learning process. One of the biggest advantages is that I do not get bored. Every day I have new things to do. I can explore myself a lot. Get good fame, name and money. My co-actors are very understanding and supportive. When I started working for this show 'Veera', I was playing the brother of Veera and I actually got to learn many things. The challenges are the cutthroat competition in this field. The industry is full of competition. There is a long queue of actors pitching for even one role. In the long run talent shines. The shows' life span is unpredictable. No one can guarantee how long a show will run. I don't plan my future. I go with the flow. And I am sure something better will always come my way. Acting is my love as well as passion. Good work and talent automatically gets money. My advice for those who want to take up the acting profession is – Acting as a career is a very interesting option. I enjoy it. However I can't predict if everyone can enjoy or feel the same way I do. There is a lot of hard work and talent requirement. One needs to concentrate on good work and good acting. Acting is about how you showcase your work through acting. My advice is one should do one’s best. There is surely insecurity too in the profession and sometimes you need to wait for the right opportunity. One must complete education and must have fall-back options; so if things don’t work, one can try other things. One must explore life and options. Career is very important for everyone. One must prioritise goals.

elibacy, chastity, loyalty and simplicity are supposed to be the synonyms of the word 'saint' or 'sant'. Dictionary describes 'saint' as "one who is sanctified or made holy; a person who is separated unto God's service." When I first read about Sant Rampal, I was disturbed and disgusted. What a person propagates or preaches is his choice but what he imposes and makes others believe is the choice WE as people make. The cases of self-proclaimed godmen coming to get supernatural powers and accusations is not new. How many times have we heard of babas being accused of raping or molesting or killing for that matter? Here, what makes things complex is the fact that he claims to be the

Where are we headed? reincarnation of Sant Kabir. Would Sant Kabir, ever in his dreams, want commandos and bullet guns for protection? Why does a simple sant, who is supposed to be away from the material world need protection and acres of land? Why would a person who is actually renouncing the world want to create problems or riots between two religious words? Sants of Indian history are said to unite cultures and in turn, remove differences. But here in Haryana, a religious group attacks and kills in the name of a sant? Parole! I believe parole is given to a person when there is a serious need for the accused to move out for a limited period of time. How then are many accused seen out in the open so very

often? Why do some people enjoy an edge to malign the law? Sanjay Dutt for example is coming in various movies and shooting for many when he claims to have come out due to ill-health of his wife, Manyata? Isn't it the job of the media to keep this on track? I remember the wonderful role of media when Manu Sharma had come out in the open. Sant Rampal fell sick immediately after he was taken to jail? Last Wednesday, he was arrested and on Saturday he is already on parole? Rampal has charges of murder, sedition, attempt to murder, rioting, illegal detention of weapons and other offences. I feel disturbed on knowing that people bring malice to such religious names of saints.

s a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, announced by the Government of India; students, teachers and parents of EuroKids, Thane (Panchpakhdhi, Vasant Vihar and Ghodbunder) introduced an initiative titled 'Little Steps towards Clean India'. The members of the pre-school organised and took part in a Walkathon from Korum Mall, Thane to Viviana Mall, Thane. About 200 people including the parents and teachers joined the walk with the students to pledge their support to this initiative. Preeti Dua, Principal, EuroKids Thane said, “Our aim is to emphasise the importance of sanitation and cleanliness to students at a young age. We want children to be ready to care not only for their own health and clean environment, but also the entire community. Teachers are agents for change among students, and we hope that we have set a good example for our students.” Many other schools have also been taking up cleanliness drives. Habitat for Humanity, a NGO dedicated to the cause of housing

and sanitation, organised a cleanliness drive with Gopal Shetty, Member of Parliament from Mumbai North and Billabong High International School in Malad recently, in order to clean up streets and open spaces of Mumbai. Hundreds of students picked up the broom to clean the streets and the BMC ground around their school. They also took out a march around the streets of Jankalyan

Nagar holding placards and banners of clean India along with brooms to clean the streets. Rajan Samuel, Managing Director – Habitat for Humanity India, said, “We at Habitat India would like to thank Gopal Shetty and Billabong school for participating in this initiative. A big thank you to all the students who came forward to participate in the drive; to make this event a great success. Our aim is to spread the message that every citizen has a role to play in creating access to sanitation facilities to needy communities and keep our surroundings clean. This is certainly a giant step in the right direction." Speaking on this occasion, Madhu Singh – Principal, Billabong High International School said, “We are glad to be part of this initiative by Habitat for Humanity. We at Billabong High believe that fostering goodness and social responsibility at a young age helps in the overall development of students and this initiative is a step towards achieving this.” Around 800 students from Billabong High International School also took part in a sanitation workshop under Habitat for Humanity’s

'Sensitise to Sanitise' campaign which aims to build 1,00,000 sanitation units by 2015. The workshop sensitised the students on the issue of poverty housing and need for sanitation in India. Students along with their parents are also contributing towards making sanitation units in Maharashtra by participating in a 2D art competition around the topic 'Importance of Sanitation in India'. This is the first of a kind initiative in India where the school is coming forward in both cleanliness and making sanitation units. Prime Minister Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan managed to create headlines across the country. Politicians and celebrities were seen with brooms in their hands, spreading the message of a cleaner India. To ensure that this message reached school children in Mumbai, Bisleri International, in association with Indian Centre for Plastic in the Environment, ICPE and Clean Mumbai Foundation initiated a clean-up drive in schools across Mumbai. Spread over two weeks from October 1 and 15, the drive was successfully covered by over 100 schools in Mumbai. All participating schools were given a cleanliness kit for collecting plastic/PET bottles from across the city by Bisleri International. Going beyond waste collection, the drive inspectors also inspected sanitation conditions in the participating schools. Students and dignitaries from the top five winning schools – Christ Church School, Byculla (winner), Anjuman-I-Islam's Allana English High School & Junior College, CST (first runner up), SIES High School, Matunga (second runner up), St Lawrence High School, Borivali (W) (consolation prize I) and Pawar Public School, Bhandup (consolation prize II) were felicitated for their contribution to the drive.

N simple words, copywriting is the use of words to express ideas to promote a person, business, opinion or idea. The main purpose of the marketing copy is to persuade the reader or the listener or the audience to act – for example, to try out a certain product or opt for a certain service provider and so on. Copywriting is basically selling with words. It is the art of using words that will convince the readers that they will benefit by using a particular product or service and then persuading them to buy.

Unemployed telecom engineer Priklopil (Thure), 35, shoved Kampusch into a van as she was going to school and took her to his house in nearby Strasshof. He shut her in an underground room measuring less than six square metres, telling her that the doors and windows were booby trapped and that her family had forgotten about her. She was his captive for the next 3096 days. His rule was ‘Obey, Obey, Obey’. Priklopil, not content with keeping Kampusch prisoner and hurting her, gave her almost nothing to eat, until she managed to escape on 23rd August, 2006. Priklopil killed himself later the same evening. The story shocked the world. The scenes of sex that started as

Natascha entered puberty are cut abruptly, when Priklopil would bind their hands together, so that Natascha would not escape when he fell asleep. 3096 Days is a movie that is painful to watch. However, we learn to appreciate the true hell that Natascha and sometimes many thousands of girls and women who are kidnapped around the world lived through. 3096 Days is gripping with every passing minute, and shows the young girl’s courage to survive the ordeal and live to tell it. A disturbing but inspiring story from start to finish thanks mainly to the exceptional central performance from Irish actress Antonia Campbell-Hughes. — Verus Ferreira

HE surge in abductions and rapes in the country these days makes one shudder to think what may happen to hapless young girls who have to suffer all the indignities and abuse thrown at them by insane and sadistically deranged men. This week, we take on the dramatic real-life abduction of tenyear-old Natascha Kampusch who was kidnapped on her way to school in Vienna, on 2nd March 1998 and kept in a dungeon for eight years. Real-life kidnapper Wolfgang Priklopil is played by Thure Lindhardt in what surely must have been a difficult role. Difficult too was the part given to Amelia Pidgeon who played young Natascha.

“Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communications whose licenses are expiring during 2015 and 2016 have jointly requested government for allowing them to continue with their existing in-use spectrum, till adequate additional spectrum, as recommended by TRAI is made available for the conduct of auction,” Minister of Communications and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad said yesterday in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. Prasad said auction of spectrum in 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 1800 Mhz bands is planned during the current financial year. In a separate reply, Prasad said the operators have proposed the auction to be conducted when there is adequate spectrum in 800 MHz, 900 Mhz, 1800 Mhz and 2100 Mhz bands, which should be auctioned simultaneously. “For the intervening period, licensees pay the price discovered in February 2014 for 1800 Mhz with 900 Mhz multiplier as recently recommended by TRAI. This may be adjusted subsequently, if required, for the price discovered in the next round of auctions,” Prasad said.

have been launched by his ministry – the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana for providing 24x7 power to every farm and home in the rural areas and the Integrated Power Development Scheme for urban areas. The government also proposes metering transmission of power from the generation up to the consumer point so as to monitor and segregate pockets with T&D losses and theft. Once this is done, the discoms would be able to cut down their losses without having to raise tariffs, he pointed out. The amendment of Electricity Act 2003 put renewable in focus and place larger targets to buy RE and strictly imposing RE generation. He mentioned that like Renewable Power Obligation (RPO), the government will bring Renewable Generation Obligation (RGO) for every power generator to also generate renewable energy in their mix. Strict enforcement of RPO and RGO will be done with stiff penalties.

Hub Of Asia, Says Edelweiss

By Dominic Rebello

T

he Indian “auto component industry is going through a huge trend shift. Pegged at USD38 bn and estimated to post 17% CAGR to ~USD115bn by FY21E (ACMA), the auto component exports currently contribute around 17% (~USD7bn) to the overall industry. Spurred by the availability of skilled manpower and technological competence, most Indian players are now graduating from being component suppliers to system or module suppliers, they are also in turn, gaining significant muscle, portending humungous opportunity for Indian auto component suppliers”, says Vinay Khattar, Associate Director & Head of Retail Research, Edelweiss. He was commenting on the just realised Edelweiss report on ‘Auto Components: The Future – Mega Trends Mega Factors’. Edelweiss Financial Services yesterday released its thematic research report which highlighted the recent as well as future trends in the USD 38 bn auto components sector in India. “Of the sectors we are bullish on, the Indian auto components sector highlights a promising future, with the profitability of companies having improved steadily over the last decade. International Revenues of some of these companies now contribute over 50% of sales when compared with a mere 10% in 2002. ‘Indian auto component companies are now truly global’. Our aim has always been to provide value based intrinsic research backed advice to our clients and this is part of a strong line-up of specific sector research that are to follow in the near future,” said Harish Sharma, Head Broking Business, Edelweiss at the unveiling of the report. The report presents a compelling case for debunking the

myth 'Auto component suppliers do not have bargaining power'. It predicts India to be the next auto ancillary hub in Asia by 2020 - Exports currently contribute 17% to the auto component industry and is expected to increase to 26% to the industry by 2021. It beleives the OEM's drive to source from a few players has engineered a paradigm shift in the industry. Indian OEM’s are actively looking to reduce suppliers over the next 4 to 5 years. For instance, Tata Motors is planning to reduce the number of suppliers by 1/3 in 3 to 4 years. The report says “Indian auto component companies’ profitability has improved over last decade. International Revenues now contribute 51% to Indian Auto component companies as against 12% in 2002, making Indian companies truly global. On this count, Edelweiss beleives that Indian companies have the ability to manage acquisition that brings scale. Their Strategy to manage acquisitions have changed.. Global auto components have scaled up through acquisitions. Indian auto component companies are following the global route and have been able to turnaround acquired companies and scale up revenues.

YDNEY: Australia Test batsman Phil Hughes has been rushed to St Vincent's Hospital after being knocked out by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match between South Australiaand NSW at the SCG here on Tuesday. The 25-year-old collapsed after being struck on the side of the head by a Sean Abbott delivery and was stretchered from the ground. He is currently undergoing surgery and according to Ambulance officials he was in a critical condition.

A statement issued by South Australia Cricket Association said: "On behalf of the SACA Board and administration, our thoughts and prayers are with Phil Hughes and his family at this time. "Phil suffered an injury to his head from a delivery Phil has been taken to hospital in Sydney and has been accompanied by family members and SACA General Manager High Performance, Tim Nielsen." The South Australia Cricket Association CEO, Keith Bradshaw, spoke briefly to the media, saying he's

"very shocked" and "very upset" by the incident. He said the outcome of Hughes' surgery is unlikely to be known for 24-48 hours. Cricket Australia CEO, James Sutherland also spoke to reporters. "To be honest it sends shudders through you a little bit," he said. "Pleasingly there was medical attention he was able to receive immediately at the ground. All we know is that it's serious and he's fortunate to be in the best possible place right now with experts all around him," he said.

Hughes was given CPR on the stretcher as he came off the field, with Australian opener David Warner alongside him. At least three ambulances and a helicopter were on hand to treat the 25year-old and transport him to St Vincent's Hospital. DELAIDE: India made a positive start to their tour of Australia after rounding off the practice game against Cricket Australia XI with an allround performance as the two-day match ended in a draw. At the Gliderol Stadium, the visitors finished at 363/8 declared after 91 overs in reply to the hosts' first-day total of 219 all out. After the Indian bowlers, led by Varun Aaron, made full use of the seamer-friendly conditions, it was the turn of their batsmen to get in some good batting practice and get versed with the conditions on offer ahead of the four-Test series

starting in Brisbane on December 4. Skipper Virat Kohli topscored on the day with 60 runs, while Murali Vijay (51), Cheteshwar Pujara (55), Wriddhiman Saha (56 not out) and Karn Sharma (55 not out) scored half-centuries. Suresh Raina (44) and Rohit Sharma (23) were also among runs. The day began with Vijay and Pujara at the crease and they were intent on making good use of the conditions. They batted without any discomfort and duly notched up their half-centuries in good time, in total putting on 85 runs for the second wicket. Both batsmen retired after getting their respective fifties.

Ajinkya Rahane (1) was the only frontline batsman to have missed out on the day, as he was dismissed by 16-year-old Sam Grimwade, thanks to a diving low catch at mid-off by Ryan Carters. Sharma then came to the crease and added 47 runs with Kohli before lunch but he fell just before the break. After lunch, Kohli and Raina batted with ease and pushed the score past the hosts' first innings total. Raina was a touch aggressive, especially against the slower bowlers, and perished in the same attacking manner. Kohli got passed his fifty-run mark but didn't look in the mood to retire and continued batting.

We are also thinking of his family, team mates and friends in the Australian cricket family. "His welfare is our highest priority . Clarke ruled out of first Test: Reports

A

DELAIDE: On a collision course with Cricket Australia over his fitness, injured skipper Michael Clarke has been reportedly ruled out of the opening Test against India, following his failure to recover well to play in the two-day tour game in Adelaide starting on Friday. Cricket Australia had made it clear that Clarke will have to play the two-day tour match in Adelaide to prove his fitness for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar series at Gabba, starting December 4. However, Clarke, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, yesterday ruled himself out for the Adelaide game but said he is looking forward to play in a Sydney grade match on Sat-

urday to prove his fitness. Clarke's contradictory public statements didn't go down well with the selectors and Cricket Australia is likely to announce that the Aussie skipper would not be playing either Adelaide tour match or the Sydney grade game. According to News Corp Australia, Cricket Australia had released a statement after consulting the medical staff which appeared to have ruled Clarke out of the opening Test if he was unable to play in the India tour game in Adelaide.

Hockey India doesn’t need Terry Walsh’s services: Narinder Batra N

EW DELHI: Terry Walsh may have expressed a desire to again take up the Indian coaching job, but Hockey India made it clear that it doesn't require the services of the Australian anymore. Hockey India's response came just after Walsh, who recently quit from his position as the chief coach over differences with the federation and Sports Authority of India, had expressed willingness to return to India provided HI shows some "desire" to work out a "viable solution". "Hockey India now does not require the services of Mr Terry Walsh and will look for a new chief coach with approval of SAI," HI president Narinder Batra said in a letter addressed to the SAI Director General Jiji Thomson. Batra had recently alleged that the Australian coach was involved in financial impropriety during his tenure with USA Field Hockey. Batra said: "We have received a mail from Hockey USA as confidential and as per that mail the issue of financial irregularity by Mr. Walsh in USA is not settled even as of today, hence his contention that his issue with USA was settled in 2012 is false and incorrect. "Further Mr. Terry Walsh through press and media has been threatening to file legal cases. Mr. Walsh has been given sufficient time to clarify on the financial irregularity issue and he instead tried to beat around the bush. HI now does not require the services of Mr. Terry Walsh and will look for a new chief coach with

approval of SAI," added Batra. The HI boss said Walsh was trying to portray himself as a martyr. "Regarding his showing commitment for players, I had in presence of HI CEO and Mr. Oltmans offered full salary for one month after Nov 19 to Terry Walsh to stay on with the Indian team till Champions Trophy and he refused to stay back till SAI agreed on his 120 days paid holiday in Australia and at that time he showed no concern for the Indian team, now he wants to project himself as martyr before the media and HI a villain. "We would very kindly request your good self to forward our mail to Hon'ble Minister as HI views on Mr. Terry Walsh's re-employment for hockey in India," Batra wrote. Earlier in the day, Walsh said that he had written to the Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal yesterday, expressing his desire to resume his India job, but said the ball is entirely in the national federation's court.
