Be adventurous, and come check out the newest trail that was recently developed by the Kincardine Trails Association volunteers. The flora and fauna change with the seasons and although the ravine lot seems like a far away wilderness, it is right here in Kincardine. On a scale of 0-4 the trail rates as a 2 for difficulty. You definitely want to bring water and some good hiking boots! Don’t worry about getting your feet wet though as our bridges and boardwalks make this a fourseason trail. Blue Flag Beaches The Municipality of Kincardine is proud to have its Station Beach recognized by Blue Flag Canada, a highly respected eco-certification program for beaches. The municipality has been awarded the Blue Flag for its management of the beach according to international environmental standards. Wherever you see a Blue Flag flying, you know the beach has excellent water quality, a well managed environment, environmental education, and safety and services. You can be assured that the water quality meets Ontario’s regulated water safety standard, the most stringent in North America, for more than 80% of the swimming season. Between June and Labour Day, the Grey Bruce Public Health Unit tests the water at Station Beach to ensure the quality does not exceed the guideline of 100E. Coli per 100ml of water. You can swim at Station Beach knowing you are in clean, safe water. Part of what makes the beach so special is the dune ecosystem, among the rarest coastal features on the Great Lakes. Ontario’s dunes have had significant declines over the last century, a result of shoreline development and recreational activities. Kincardine’s dunes feature rare plant species and protect our beach from storm waves, in turn protecting the lake’s water quality. The dunes are sensitive to human disturbances and if damaged or destroyed will lead to poor beach quality, loss of shore protection value, loss of habitat and water quality degradation. To help protect the dunes, use the designated beach walkways, avoid trampling the dune vegetation and educate others about the importance of dunes. For more information on dune conservation contact Geoff Peach, Coastal Resources Manager with the Coastal Centre at (519) 523-4478. When using the walkways, enjoy the work of The Friends of the Boardwalk, a group established in 2000 to improve the boardwalk gardens. Volunteers plant and maintain up to 35 individual garden plots and plan to expand further to the south over time. You can help keep all of Kincardine’s beaches in Blue Flag condition by using recycling and litter containers, picking up after your pet immediately throughout town, refraining from using pesticides and chemical fertilizers at home and from pouring toxic products down your drains.

To find out more about the Blue Flag Program, visit the Environmental Defence web site at www.EnvironmentalDefence.ca and the Municipality of Kincardine web site at www.kincardine.net.
