COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

City Water This city is a special place Where everyone should go Experience their treasure, It’s a glass of H2O.

A charge, it has been hatched. Here are thirty dollars From their pockets some will dig it Smiles are stretched from ear to ear And they don’t even have a spigot.

The residents delight Their frowns have been erased Their senses are awakened To it’s aroma and the taste.

Paying there in queue, A check, they’ll stop and scribble, They’re paying up their water bills But they don’t even get a dribble….

Water will affect the mind The studies all will say So every lot within the town, Everyone will pay….

And nothing is delivered Nor requested or required There is no need or want And no service is desired.

But pay not for the water For no water is attached Though written on the bill,

Then the organ grinder came And here’s another fee Imagine the elation When folks stepped on up to see…

Brought to you by:

But no sound came from the organ For the fee won’t crank it up There tethered by a chain, The mayor holds the cup.

Money Talks

By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana

The Rule Of 72

“How long will it take my investment to double?” This is a common question many may have concerning their investments and think a calculator is needed to provide an answer. But a calculator may not be needed, at all. The tool to use is called the Rule of 72 and, best of all; it is simple and free. This is how it works. If an individual has an investment they think will grow at an assumed rate of return per year, then simply dividing that rate of return into 72 will provide a rough estimate of the number of years it will take for the investment to double in size. For example, let’s assume an investment is assumed to grow at an average rate of return of six percent each year. Simply divide six into 72 will give a rough estimate that it will take 12 years for this investment to double (72 6 = 12). This formula assumes a fixed annual rate of return and the reinvestment of all earnings. Keep in mind that very few investments offer a guaranteed rate of return and that an investment’s past performance does not guarantee future performance. The rule of 72 may also be used to show the negative power of inflation. This may be an especially handy tool to those individuals in their retirement’s years and, also, for those approaching the retirement decision. Using this tool an individual can 228-9844 M-Fof9:30-5:30 estimate the number years it will take for his or her cost of living to double. Or put another way, how long before an individual’s purchasing power is cut in half. For example, let’s assume an individual is retired and forecasts an inflation rate of five percent per year. An inflation rate, in general terms, is the rate of increase in the prices of goods and services individuals purchase over time. Forecasting an inflation rate of five percent means the individual is assuming the prices of the goods and services he or she will purchase in the future will increase at a rate of five percent per year. Using the rule of 72, simply dividing five into 72 will provide a rough estimate that the individual’s cost of living will double in 14 to 15 years (72 5 = 14.4). Of course, this article is no substitute for a careful consideration of all of the advantages and disadvantages of an investment strategy to meet your goals. Before implementing a significant investment strategy consider consulting your financial advisor. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by Greg Dugdale, Branch Manager of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC.

He Said . . . She Said

These quotable quotes and catch-phrases are used and repeated, but seldom fully understood. Enjoy reading this Tricia’s Trader exclusive where we delve into the background and origins of some commonly referenced lines in American lingo.

“The two hardest things to say in life are hello for the first time and goodbye for the last.” WHO SAID IT: MOIRA ROGERS Moira Rogers is a duo of paranormal romance writers, one a former forensic science and nursing student slash mother, the other a computer programmer with a passion for gritty urban fantasy. Under their pen name, which is composed of someone’s middle names (and they’re not saying whose), the pair have created a multitude of fictional romances based in the world of werewolves, witches and wizards, vampires, angels and all sort of paranormal creatures. A majority of their titles run in series, offering their readers an almost unending offering for their favorite storylines. Their series’ currently include: Southern Arcana, Children of the Undying, Bloodhounds, and Sanctuary, just to give a short list. HAVE A GREAT QUOTE TO SHARE? Email it to office@kimmel-kreations.com. Three Simple Questions Despite the best efforts of liberty’s enemies both home and abroad, our great American experiment in freedom is still alive. In early September around the family dinner table, I listened to a conversation—more of an interrogation actually—which made me proud. America may be 235 years old, but I can say with certainty the best years lie ahead thanks to patriots in the younger generation. Here is what happened. It had been six weeks since we had seen our five Kimmel grandchildren, a clear violation of our one-month rule, so the trophy wife and I raced to Great Falls for a quick overnight stay. Joining us for supper was Jess, a former Yellowstone County girl who babysat my mini-Kimmels when she was in high school. Jess is an important spoke in the family wheel, and over Labor Day weekend she motored 814 miles from the University of North Dakota to introduce the family to her boyfriend, Jake. With the kitchen table stretched to the max, all eleven of us sat down and Mae, our six-year-old, said grace. We laughed as Jake and Jess described their non-stop drive across the bigger part of two states. They had rolled out of Grand Forks around 4:00 Friday afternoon and staggered into the Kimmel house at 5:30 Saturday morning. They suffered from Honda-Accord-lag (a travel syndrome less serious than jet lag), but they were surprisingly bright by dinnertime, which was good because my son-in-law, Tim, was planning to interrogate Jake. Tim grew up a Montana ranch kid so being a hard nosed federal law enforcement officer comes natural to him. He and Meagan had recently hired a part time nanny and Tim asked her some very blunt questions during the interview. I was joshing Tim and said, “Why don’t you ask Jake the same questions?” He chuckled and tried to change the subject, but finally blurted, “Okay, I will.” “Question one: Jake, do you smoke pot? Question two: Have you ever cheated on your girlfriend? Question three: “Democracy or republic?” The third question was so powerful and thought provoking, my mouth fell open and I stared at Jake while waiting for the answer. Jake stammered a couple answers before Jess jumped in and shouted, “Democracy!” Since Jess is still suffering through college indoctrination, plus the fact most high school civics texts erroneously refer to America as being a representative democracy, her answer was reflexively predictable. “Wrong,” Tim fired back, “but two out of three isn’t bad.” The hot lights were clicked off and this brings me to my point. Our founders purposely crafted an American republic because they despised tyranny, but feared democracy as it is a temporary form of government which always progressively descends back into tyranny. They only form of government which has any chance to ensure liberty for perpetuity is a republic where the rule of law guaranteeing rights of the people reigns supreme. This is the precise reason American elected officials pledge an oath to the Constitution rather than an oath to represent the majority opinion of their constituents. (Politicians always miss this point.) Democracy is just a fancy, yet fatal word for mob rule, and today it is thrown around universities in a manner suggesting it is synonymous with republic. If majority rule is supreme, then a majority vote could suspend every right our Constitution is crafted to ensure. It was the fact Tim recognized the importance of the question which made me proud. As a ranch kid, Tim was seasoned by long hours on the back of a horse and the seat of a tractor. He is the youngest of four and he lost his father to a car accident when he was nine. Tim, his siblings and mother worked hard to keep the ranch together so it is not surprising he worked his way through college. Recent world and national events have awakened his generation and given me optimism. Everything they have earned—note the keyword earned—is at risk, so they understand the importance of restoring our American republic. In Tim’s case, the battle for liberty begins across his kitchen table. Does it yours?
