COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

A Special Note for You

He wrote: While I’m up here in the high land I think of you below Let me tell you sweetheart, There’s something you should know.

Gigantic in proportion It could be defined Grab the opportunity Have it etched into your mind.

As for the time duration, I can’t assume the length When it’s finally over, It may zap up all your strength.

As I write this message I think that it is wise To tell you, almost any day, You may get a big surprise.

It is darned impressive Tremendous, so to speak Come, you are invited Come and take a peek.

You’ll have memories in the basement Perhaps the kitchen floor Don’t forget the living room‌ You won’t yell for more.

To type this loving note to you It’s somewhat tongue in cheek It’s plain for you to visualize I’m truly up the creek.

Come and take a good hard look It’s here for your inspection It will take your breath away You may need some good protection.

As I conclude this note to you Before I drift to sleep I do hope, well in advance, You’re not in too deep.

Down in your community, They’re diminutive and small Up here, on the other hand, You’ve got it straight and tall.

It’s my sole perspective “X will mark the spot Honey, be prepared Off guard, you may be caught.

Before I doze and dream of you, My affection I will show With love, here is the message, Look out for melting snow. H. Fred Liese Tricia’s Trader, Š 2011

Every spousal financial relationship is unique. Through the years, couples develop their own systems for handling financial matters. Sometimes it is one partner’s responsibility to manage all finances, sometimes the other’s and sometimes a combination. Whatever the situation, certain information should be shared. Couples should consider mutual responsibility for and knowledge of: Retirement plans: Take time to fully acquaint each other with employer retirement benefits. Both partners should have current knowledge of pension plans, 401(k) accounts and IRAs. For a complete picture of expected retirement benefits, become familiar with each other’s Social Security benefits, as well. Understanding retirement benefit information will bring clarify and facilitate retirement planning. Credit card documents: This one can be scary. Some may prefer to not know how much credit card debt their spouse has accumulated. But it’s wise to know where to find account numbers in case one loses his or her wallet and needs the other to help cancel the card. Also, mutual awareness of credit card debt amounts will help with developing a family’s overall financial plan. Power of attorney: It is generally a good idea to have power of attorney on any individually owned assets, just in case one becomes ill or otherwise unavailable. Power of attorney can be limited to specific functions for a certain period, such as selling stocks or withdrawing money while traveling. A broad document that authorizes each partner to handle almost any situation in the other’s absence is also a consideration. Wills, trusts and life insurance: It’s especially important to share information about wills, trusts and life insurance if either has been married before. There could be restrictions on how some assets may be used and beneficiaries left unchanged by mistake. Most important, make sure each partner knows where to find wills and will be able to easily access it if something were to happen. Health insurance policies: Most insurance companies will cover care administered in the first 24 to 48 hours of a medical emergency, even if the coverage details have not been sorted out. But the situation isn’t as clear with hospital visits that are less urgent. If each partner is covered under a different insurance plan, both should be familiarized with the requirement “hoops” they may have to jump through. If one spouse had a sudden illness, would the other know which doctor to call first to get an okay for treatment? If not, they risk running up big bills at an out-of-network doctor. Business loans: If one spouse owns a business or is a partner in a professional firm, both should know about any personally guaranteed loans. It is critical to be aware of liabilities since household assets can be hit if the business can’t repay the loan. While many don’t necessarily need to know everything about their spouse’s finances, maintaining a working knowledge of the above points can help maintain proper, balanced control over a family’s financial affairs. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by Greg Dugdale, Branch Manager of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC.

April 6, 2011............................................................................. Volume IX Issue 7..............................................................................Tricia’s Trader 10

Wo r d s F r o m We n d y

As you know, our very own Wendy Warburton is serving in Helena again this Legislative Session representing the people of House District 34. During her hiatus from ‘Tricia’s Trader’, she has graciously agreed to send us updates of the happenings in the capitol of this great state.

For Sale: 15 acres 1 mile For Sale: 48 ft. x 105 in. wide, west of Malta. Hwy #2 frontdry van trailer, good for storage, age. Nice barn with paint and DOT’d brakes good, tires good, new tin roof. Corrals. Well. in good shape. 338-4440. 3-II $95,000 OBO. 658-2661 4-I

Friends and neighbors, Updates before the session’s end are challenging, because we don’t know what will make it past the governor’s veto pen, but here are a few quick highlights of items that I hope and anticipate will make it through the process: • Balanced budget without increased taxes. • LOWER state budget for the next biennium than the current biennium – likely 5-7% less. (Generally, government grows. To shrink it is noteworthy, particularly considering that nearly a billion dollars in stimulus money flooded the state last session.) • Reduction of “One Time Only” spending – which rarely seems to remain remain “one time only” – from over $500 million to under $10 million. • Limitations on future budget growth, including sunsets on statutory appropriations and the launching of zero-based budgeting.

A long list of business friendly JOBS bills (which I will report on in detail later) – particularly to facilitate growth in natural resource developmentand reduceworker’s compensation rates to make Montana more competitive. • Healthcare freedom and reform bills – rejecting Obamacare and implementing Montana-style, free market solutions. • Tort reform. • Bills and resolutions standing up for gun rights, for religious freedom, and for controlling wolves and other predators, and standing against additional national monument land in Montana. Watch coming issues for more details on how these and other topics shake out after they hit the governor’s desk. Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor

by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58

We hope you enjoy reading this newest feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but you will always have something to discuss over dinner.

The Silent Introduction

After the opening invocation and pledge, every floor session in Montana’s legislature begins with various members introducing home town folks gathered in the gallery above the chamber. In the six years I have served, almost no citizens of my district have visited the capitol during the session. I jokingly told my seatmate, if I didn’t see a constituent pretty soon, I was going to start introducing all my imaginary friends. Friday, March 18th, we heard three moving straight-from-the-heart introductions, but it was the silent fourth one which sticks with me. I’ll explain. The separation of legislators from their loved ones pales in comparison to the sacrifice made by our armed forces deployed overseas. Our engagement is but four months, theirs is measured in years. Nonetheless, it still hurts. Representative Gordon Hendrick rose first to introduce Vicky, whom with he would celebrate his 40th anniversary on Sunday. His voice cracked with emotion as he stared up at his beloved wife seated in the gallery. Gordon’s words started a cascade of spouse introductions. Representative Bob Wagner stood next; his wedding anniversary was this week as well. His wife, Christy, was not present during this introduction but he wanted proof on the record and in the journal, he did properly ask his high school sweetheart to marry him. This is a contentious issue still never settled after 37 years and four kids. (Apparently, Bob, just like me, married his high school girlfriend while she was still in her early twenties and didn’t realize she was marrying down. Last June I had my trophy wife blasting 120 years of raccoon poop out of the barn loft with a power washer and after 31 years of marriage, she is still delusional enough to think this is as good as it gets.) Glendive’s Representative Matt Rosendale was the third to rise. Unlike me being three hours from home, Matt’s nine hour drive forces him to spend his weekends in Helena alone. This weekend, however, was different as up in the gallery sat Jean, his wife of 27 years. Matt is tough. He is unwavering when facing hostile political fire, but this battle was different. He pointed up in the gallery and spoke brokenly. When he reached the part about the mother of his three children, he dropped his face into his hands to hold back the tears. Overcome with emotion and with his sentence forever unfinished, he sat down. The fourth introduction, the silent one, came from vacant seat 31 on the House floor. As the bustle of the formal session began, I sat and stared at the empty chair. This is the desk of Anaconda freshman legislator Kathy Swanson. Kathy has found the separation from her husband, Butch, to be harder than she had anticipated. To ease the pain of being apart, Kathy and Butch religiously phone each morning at six and then Butch begins his day teaching high school and Kathy heads to the capitol. March 3rd their daily routine changed forever. Kathy called repeatedly that Thursday morning and Butch never answered. Getting more anxious with each unanswered ring, she called their next door neighbors and asked them to check on Butch. They did. Their knock went unanswered as well, so they opened the door and found Butch lying on the floor. For reasons unknown, God had called Butch home. Kathy was devastated by her loss and her seat has been empty ever since. We hear word she might return next week and if she does she is stronger than me. Knowing that your world back home has been turned upside down, I don’t know where you find the strength to re-enter the arena as a citizen legislator. Suddenly facing the world alone, the political battle would seem senseless to me. Keep Kathy’s tragedy in mind and ponder this: As hard as it is to say goodbye to the person with whom you have built your life, imagine never having the chance to do so. This is the perfect opportunity to reach over and gently cradle the hand of the one who touches a special place in your heart. Kiss their forehead and thank God for every single moment you have shared. Do it now—you may never get another chance.
