There is something sweet and timeless about photography with a couple that’s in love. I use natural lighting and simple poses to make you look and feel comfortable in front of the camera. Years from now, you’ll to look back and relive these intimate moments together, with sweetness and love. I promise! After setting a date to have your photographs taken, consider these 5 tips to ensure you get pretty portraits during our session. Hopefully these tips help y’all in preparing for your upcoming photo session with me! I cannot wait to have y’all in front of my camera looking pretty! ~ KIMBERLY CHAU LEE
Get hair and make-up done professionally. I always encourage my brides-to-be to get their hair and make-up done for their engagements or bridal sessions. Reason being, they look fresh and their best when it’s professionally done and you don’t have to worry about getting it wrong on the day of the wedding if you have your trial run on during your session(s) before. I love the work of PINK PALETTE ARTISTS and ADORNE ARTISTRY. These ladies are so talented and sweet! You can see how you look in the make-up and hair in the pictures, then make your tweaks for the final wedding day look months after. I highly recommend this option since you’ll be able to meet your hair and make-up artist too and refine a specific look with them. In a pinch? Hair places like BLOW DRY BAR and THE DO BAR in Houston can pamper you up with a fabulous blow dry. Or you can always make an appointment at your usual salon for styling too. For make-up, make an appointment with a cosmetic store or counter, like SEPHORA, MAC, or BOBBI BROWN and they’ll make you look glam in no time. Sometimes they require a minimum purchase from their products, so be ready to buy a lip color or powder to touch up.
Seek outfit inspirations and personal shopping. It’s the best way to make the most out of your shopping experience. Clothing stores like J.CREW and NORDSTROM offer personal shoppers and they can coordinate an outfit for you and your hubs-to-be. Simply call the store and ask for an appointment. They work miracles in choosing the best styles, colors, and fits for your look. You’ll look fabulous for your photo session and have an excuse to own those trendy threads in your closet! BHLDN, J.CREW, NORDSTROM also offer personal shopping for wedding parties. Bring your PINTEREST board along to show them images of inspiration for your wedding day look. They can get everyone fitted and even offer in-house options for alterations. Often times, I browse through fashion blogs, catalogs, and magazines to find new ways to pose my subjects as well as fresh looks for them to put together for outfits. I love the pairing of solid colors with patterns. I think layering and accessorizing is always flattering in photos and wear unique textures that fit the season. Dress so you feel confident, fabulous, beautiful, and impressive!
Make it personal and styled. I love it when couples bring a personal element into their sessions. You can do that by telling your story through a unique venue, including pets or pretty props, or styling the shoot to fit your wedding day inspiration. By making the shoot personal, you retell the story of your love and engagement. Maybe he popped the question at a DRIVE-THRU MOVIE THEATRE, or your first date was at a 1940!S AIR TERMINAL MUSEUM. Or your favorite thing to do together is go on doggy dates at a nearby park. All of these make for pretty pictures! If you’re having bridals done, ask your florist to prepare a bouquet for you. You can opt to have something smaller and similar to your wedding day florals. I think florals make such a difference in the feel of a wedding day. My friends Lori at SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS and TAMARA MENGES can do just that! You can also find sweet signage to share your wedding date. PRESSED COTTON and BHLDN provide endless props you can use to decorate your session or your wedding day! But be careful not to overdo it. Find an event stylist or ask your wedding planner to assist with composing the look, like these ladies at EVENTOLOGY WEDDINGS, TWO BE WED, and EVENT SOLUTIONS. They can bring your wedding dreams to life.
Arrive on time and ready. Because I photograph my couples mainly outside with natural lighting, it is important to show up on time and dressed for the session. Typically, I schedule our session an hour or two before sunset. The lighting is best at this time because it’s nicely diffused and not harsh. The temperatures are also slightly cooler towards the evening and you won’t be completely drenched in sweat before the session begins. Sometimes, we may have time slots reserved at venues where we might incur additional fees or risk the venue closing their doors since its after hours. I want my clients to have the most optimal experience during their shoot and timeliness is imperative to ensure quality images with our time.
Trust the photographer’s vision. A lot of times, my clients share their wedding ideas and PINTEREST boards with me and I absolutely love the inspiration! It gives me a complete vision of your nuptials and style, which helps me better photograph your wedding day. However, often times I will incorporate new locations or creative posing into our session. As an artist, I see things differently and I am constantly inspired by colors, lighting, and tones. While PINTEREST and other photographs offer an idea for the photos, my clients often book me for my unique work and style. Looks that I like are natural and organic and not dark and harsh. My clients know to trust me when I make suggestions, and they allow me to capture their day freely and retell the story of their love through my images.
