W

hether it’s one of the acclaimed courses at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa or Geneva National Resort, or enjoying the views and challenges at one of the many other nearby links, players quickly realize why the Lake Geneva area is one of Wisconsin’s top golf destinations. With more than 20 golf courses located within minutes of the banks of picturesque Geneva Lake, Lake Geneva’s century-old reputation as playground for the rich still rings true today, with the modern-day emphasis on “playground.” Situated between Milwaukee and Chicago, Lake Geneva was in a perfect location to welcome the fledgling game of golf to the Midwest. Lake Geneva is absolutely a Wisconsin city, but there’s no denying its Illinois influences dating back to the 1870s, when wealthy Chicago families fled north to the resort town as the city was rebuilding after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. When the first Lake Geneva golf holes were laid out in the late 1890s, there was already a willing population of potential golfers awaiting their arrival. Come the 21st century, sprawling resorts with multiple courses anchor Lake Geneva golf on both ends of town. Golf is just one of the many activities available to guests at bustling Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, a AAA Four Diamond resort located on the eastern edge of the city. There are two championship courses here – The Brute and The Highlands – and, despite the common ground they share, they have vastly different histories. Robert Bruce Harris designed the Brute in the late 1960s as a showpiece for the then-new Lake Geneva Playboy Club, which years later became Grand Geneva Resort & Spa. The Highlands was built in the mid1990s when architect Bob Cupp replaced Wisconsin Golf & Travel Escapes: Lake Geneva | 7

membership, while the other two are open to the public. Tuesday is the only day all three courses are open for daily-fee players. The Inns of Geneva National and Geneva Ridge Resort are lodging options, so stay and play packages including rounds of golf on the Geneva National courses are offered. In nearby Fontana, Abbey Springs GC was designed by Ken Killian and Dick Nugent and opened for play in 1971. The par-72 course measures 6,644 yards from the back tees. than they do on the scorecard. Abbey Springs is a private club, resort course and daily-fee facility all rolled into one. It is located near and works in cooperation with the Abbey Resort, but they are separately owned. The course is open to daily-fee players and is a popular spot for golf outings, but its private membership gets priority for weekend tee times. Country Club Estates is a pretty ninehole golf course also located in Fontana. The par-35 layout measures 3,011 yards from the back tees and is a fun, sometimes quirky place to play. Once private, Country Club Estates is always open to daily-fee players. Hawk’s View GC, which opened in 2001 and was designed by Craig Schreiner, offers a couple unique 18-hole courses. Par-72 Como Crossings is the championship golf course at Hawk’s View GC, and it measures 7,074 yards. Como Crossings makes excellent use of the property’s varied terrain, which used to be home to a ski hill

a course called the Briar Patch that opened in 1971. The Briar Patch never matched the quality of its big-name designers – Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye – so Cupp essentially started over. The Highlands – a pretty Scottish links-themed layout – measures 6,659 yards from the back tees. The Playboy days are long gone, and Grand Geneva now boasts a lot of family activities besides golf, including horseback riding, waterparks, tennis facilities, hiking, biking and numerous dining facilities. The resort also offers a range of spa services year-round in its WELL Spa + Salon. Geneva National Resort, located just north of town, has always been associated with three big names in the world of golf, as Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Gary Player designed its three golf courses The Player Course was the last of the three to be completed because an environmentally sensitive routing had to be found around wetlands leading down to the property’s Lake Como shoreline. The course is considered by many to be the best of the trio, as it has appeared on Golfweek magazine’s Best Courses You Can Play list. Six days a week, Geneva National sets aside one of the three courses for its private

called Mt Fuji. The course has a 15-foot waterfall on the 14th hole and some nice elevation changes thanks to that old ski hill heritage. In many cases, fairways are bordered by wetlands and stands of long fescue grasses. Barn Hollow is Hawk View’s par-3 course, measuring 2,708 yards. From the back tees, holes range from 106 yards to 222 yards. From the forward tees, holes

average around 100 yards. There are two popular golf facilities in Delavan, about 10 miles west of Lake Geneva, and both date to the 1920s. Lake Lawn Resort is a full-service resort occupying two miles of Delavan Lake shoreline. Part of that shoreline is devoted to Lake Lawn’s 18-hole golf course – par-70 and 6,201 yards – that opened in the 1920s. Delbrook GC is a 27-hole facility that

In East Troy, Alpine Valley Resort offers a ski hill in winter and a major concert venue in its outdoor amphitheater through the warm-weather season. The rock stars that play the theater have been known to tee it up at Alpine Valley’s 27-hole golf facility before and after their gigs. A little north of Alpine Valley, Lake Beulah CC is an 18-hole course near Mukwonago with popular Friday fish fries. Nippersink Resort in Genoa City lines near the Illinois state line in a lakeside setting. The resort, which dates to the 1920s, offers an 18-hole course, lodging and facilities for banquets and weddings. Two courses reside in the Whitewater area, including the formerly private Whitewater CC (nine holes, par-36), which is now semi-private. The other is Spring Creek GC, a nine-hole par-3 course. Finally, the Lake Geneva area offers

opened for play in 1928 and was a private club until purchased by the city of Delavan in 1945. The city has operated it since then, adding the third nine in 2001. All three nines – North, South and Middle – play to a par of 35 and measure between 3,185 and 3,376 yards with four sets of tees. Just north of lake Geneva, two courses reside in the Walworth County community of Elkhorn. Evergreen GC is a 27-hole facility that is often one of the first courses to open in the spring and last to close in the fall. All three nines at Evergreen are par36 and play over rolling terrain with numerous water features. Aptly named Lauderdale Lakes CC is located on the Lauderdale Chain of Lakes just off Highway 12/67 and offers a ninehole course measuring 3,003 yards from the back tees. The course is owned by the Lauderdale Lakes Management District.

some fine private golf clubs. In Fontana, Big Foot GC is a pretty private facility named after an 18th century Potawatomi chief who lived in the area. Lake Geneva CC is the other private club, located in Lake Geneva on the lake’s south shore. Wisconsin Golf & Travel Escapes: Lake Geneva | 9

Lake Geneva living

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESCAPE TO LAKE GENEVA --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Putting down roots in Lake Geneva ike its residents, Lake Geneva realty professionals find themselves in a very nice place. It’s a city of less than 8,000 full-time residents, but on summertime weekends Lake Geneva bursts with 25,000 or more inhabitants. Inevitably, some among those throngs of visitors each year decide to put down permanent roots.

Steve Kasimatis of Coldwell Banker Elite Realty, said simple geography is a big draw for Lake Geneva property purchasers. Many who buy the big lakeside properties – there’s one on the market for $12 million this spring – are corporate executives who work on both sides of the state line. Some properties are vacation homes, but most of them are primary residences for their owners.

“The bigger estates on Geneva Lake and Delavan Lake are year-round homes. The more expensive the home, the more likely it is that they’re going to be staying in it year-round.” – STEVE KASIMATIS, COLDWELL BANKER ELITE

Some of those roots only go so deep, as Lake Geneva and its surrounding cities and villages attract buyers of vacation properties. Situated an hour from Milwaukee and two hours from Chicago, Lake Geneva has been in the business of welcoming vacationers for 150 years. Others seeking permanent residences are attracted by the upscale dining, shops and galleries downtown and the area’s world class sailing and fishing. Families are drawn by Lake Geneva’s great schools, safe streets and numerous parks and beaches.

Situated an hour from Milwaukee and two hours from Chicago, Lake Geneva has been in the business of welcoming vacationers for 150 years. “The bigger estates on Geneva Lake and Delavan Lake are year-round homes, Kasimatis said. “The more expensive the home, the more likely it is that they’re going to be staying in it year-round. As Kasimatis referenced, there are numerous bodies of water in Walworth County beyond Geneva Lake, such as Delevan Lake and the Lauderdale Chain of Lakes. He said properties on Geneva Lake average about $900,000 in listing price and about $800,000 in selling price – well

above properties on surrounding waters. Across the region, and including non-lake properties, the average home price is closer to $200,000, Kasimatis said. At any given time in the area, there are homes in a wide array of prices on the market. A few golf facilities also feature real estate, including the 54-hole golf course and real estate complex at Grand Geneva Resort. On the west end of the lake, Abbey Springs GC in Fontana offers some singlefamily homes and condominiums popular

with families and retirees, and 27-hole Evergreen GC in Elkhorn also has homes along its meandering fairways. The real estate market is strong in 2014, with 14 lakeshore homes – averaging $1.1 million – already receiving accepted offers, Kasimatis said. “Things are improving dramatically, he said. “We had such a horrible winter, so people really were ready to get out. We had very little activity when the weather was so bad.

N

o, the telescope wasn’t there to watch if golfers were playing by the rules. In fact, it was just a coincidence that a golf course and the world’s largest refracting telescope shared the same terrain for decades along the Geneva Lake shoreline in Williams Bay. The golf course was unique because of its connection to Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball, who designed the course’s first six holes in 1902. It was expanded to nine holes in 1906 and to 18 holes in 1918. However, the par-67 course never reopened following the 2011 season because it had become such a financial drain on its

owner, George Williams College of Aurora University – formed when George Williams College merged with Aurora University (Ill.) in 2000. The course was projected to lose $100,000 over the 2012 golf season, so the university shut it down. Today, the former golf course is being used for agricultural research by students and for campus recreation. Meantime, the Yerkes Observatory, featuring that big refracting telescope, was established in 1897. It is owned and operated by the University of Chicago. Tours are provided six days a week and numerous other educational programs are offered.

Geneva Lake boasts some fantastic fishing opportunities

Q

uestion: What’s the No. 1 tourist attraction in Lake Geneva. Answer: It’s a big body of water. Name of Geneva. This is anything but a chicken-or-the-egg situation because when you get right down to it, Lake Geneva (the city) exists because of Geneva Lake (the water), and not the other way around. Early settlers were drawn to the area around the lake’s White River outflow in the 1830s by the lure of waterpower for grist and saw mills. In more recent times, Geneva Lake’s clear, deep waters have evolved from a place of commerce into a recreational wonderland. The big lake is busy with boat traffic all season long, but particularly on summer weekends. Beaches surround the water, as do bike paths and hiking trails. Boat cruises are offered, and visitors can find all manner of watercraft to rent for their own water excursions. While the number of visitors to the Lake Geneva area varies depending on the season, it is paltry compared to the population living under the lake’s surface, which numbers in the millions. Geneva Lake covers approximately 5,250 acres and reaches a depth of 146 feet, so fish here have a massive neighborhood to explore, and so do the anglers who chase them. There aren’t many bodies of water in Wisconsin like Geneva Lake. It supports warm water fish like bass, pike, crappie and bluegill, but, as the second-deepest lake in Wisconsin, it also offers a unique cold water fishery for species such as brown trout, lake trout and cisco. (In fact, the Wisconsin state record inland brown trout – 18 pounds, 6 ounces – was caught from Geneva Lake in 1984.) Fishing guide John Trossen chases all the various species, depending on what his clients want to catch on any particular day. 38 | Wisconsin Golf & Travel Escapes: Lake Geneva

Trossen said the early season, from about May to early July, is a great time to fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill and crappie. Geneva Lake produces a lot of big bluegills, which no doubt end up on dinner plates across the region. July and August is a prime time for northern pike, as they settle into their summertime routine along the lake’s thermocline, which makes them easier to catch. And lake trout and bluegill fishing is productive after the Fourth of July because those species also congregate in deep water. After Labor Day and through October, pike fishing is still good, with many anglers trolling for them, and bass, bluegill and crappie fishing remains productive. Trossen, known as the lake’s “walleye guru,” said June all the way through December is productive for ‘ol marble eyes, and it is often best to fish at night for them. Most species can also be caught through the ice in winter. And there are many more targets for anglers on the way, as Geneva Lake is heavily stocked. Every other year, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources stocks walleyes in the lake, and a local Walleyes For Tomorrow chapter made up entirely of volunteers rears their own baby walleyes each season. The result has been more than 10 million walleyes stocked in Geneva Lake in just the last three years. There were also 150,000

Muskies have been stocked in the lake for the last four years, and Trossen said some fat, healthy fish around the 40-inch mark are beginning to be caught. Many species of fish can be caught from shore at various times of the year, and there are public access points galore around the lake. Otherwise, anglers can make arrangements with a professional guide. Trossen owns a bait shop/country store in Lake Geneva called The Pier – (262) 348-9400 – and most of the other tackle shops in the area are also affiliated with licensed guides.
