The Presidential Election

Candidates Peter Casey (Independent)

Claddagh Resources founder and owner Peter Casey is from Derry and is a Dragon Den’s investor.

Gavin Duffy (Independent)

Best known for his role in Dragon’s Den, he operates a media and management consultancy. He has in the past worked as an advisor to Fine Gael and Fianna Fail.

Joan Freeman (Independent)

Pieta House founder, Senator Joan Freeman is a psychologist and mental health activist from Dublin.

Sean Gallagher (Independent)

A former Dragon’s Den star from Cavan finished second in the 2011 Irish presidential election. He lost to the current president Michael D Higgins.

Presidential Election Friday 26th October Key Points Firstly, make sure you know where you’re voting. This information will be printed on your polling card. You should also plan when you’re going to vote. The polls are open from 7am to 10pm so you have 15 hours to work with. Leave your badges, signs and jumpers at home. Campaigning is not permitted at polling stations. This applies to posters, leaflets, flags, banners and anything that encourages a vote for one side over the other. If you arrive wearing something that promotes one side over the other, you may be asked to remove it. Don’t take a selfie or any photograph in the voting booth. Voting is done by secret ballot and the Department of the Environment says that: “taking photographs and the sharing of any photograph of a ballot paper marked at an election or a referendum could have the potential to compromise the integrity and secrecy of a ballot and may constitute an offence”. You can take a

photo outside the polling station either before or after you’ve voted, but not inside. Don’t forget your polling card or other form of official identification. You should have received a polling card but you don’t need it to vote. You must bring a valid form of personal identification, such as a passport, official student identification or driving licence, with you when you go to vote. Read the question being asked in the ballot very carefully and mark your answer with an ‘X’. You should mark ‘X’ in either the ‘yes’ or the ‘no’ box on the paper, then show the back of the ballot paper to the polling officials, fold it and place it in a sealed ballot box. Any other mark will spoil your vote. For voters with disabilities, if you are voting at a polling station, you may be helped to vote by utilising companion voting, assistance from the presiding officer or by using a tactile ballot paper template.

What’s Going On?

What we think?

The Irish presidential election will take place on Friday, 26 October, between 7.00 a.m. and 10.00 p.m. President Michael D. Higgins, who was elected in 2011, is seeking re-election. This will be the first time since the 1966 election that an incumbent president will face a contest for a second term. It is also the first election with two candidates who contested the previous election. The inauguration for the next presidential term will take place on 11 November. The election will be held on the same date as a referendum on blasphemy

What is blasphemy?

Definition: The action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk.

Michael D Higgins (Independent) The sitting president, 77, hails from Limerick, is a well-known academic and former TD representing Labour. He is running as independent in this election.

Liadh Ní Riada (Sinn Fein)

An MEP for the south consistency she lives in Cork but was born in Dublin. Previously worked in RTE.

We are fortunate to have the right to vote and many people died to gain this right. It is incumbent on us all to exercise this right and choose the candidate we want to represent our country for the next 7 years. Regards the blasphemy law it is time that this issue was dealt with by the people. Whatever you choose, make sure your decision is counted by voting.

A Tribute To My Husband John Broderick Words: Sandra Broderick To everyone who knew and loved my husband John, I am looking for your support to help others who struggle to deal with hopelessness and depression in their everyday lives. After a long battle with depression, I lost the most fantastic husband and father to my beautiful little girl on 28th August last. The week of the 20th October is Pieta House’ charity week and I need your help to raise much deserving funds for such a worthy cause. My little girl Grace and I have set up a tribute page in John’s memory on the Pieta House website and in the past few weeks it has raised over €14,000. John was a fantastic person who always put everyone else before himself and was such a kind, caring, generous person. In his marathon running days he raised thousands of euros for the Irish Cancer Society. He also made regular trips to Cork to the Irish Blood Transfusion Services clinic to donate blood platelets which are life-saving for newborn babies, cancer treatment and bone marrow transplants. He was an inspiration to his family and all that knew him and I hope we are doing him proud in showing him that even though he’s not with us, he is still helping others. From the moment I met John I knew that I would never ever meet anyone like him again. John fought depression for many years but as a couple we got through some very difficult times. We also made unbelievable happy memories and I can honestly say that I never knew happiness until John came into

my life. The love and support that Grace, Johns family and I have received these past few weeks will show John up in heaven how truly loved he was and always will be. Our journey through life together has come to a standstill for now, but not forever. Grace and I will keep going on our happy journey and I know I will have John in spirit helping me along the way especially on our more difficult days. I have no unanswered questions, as I know that my husband’s pain and suffering is over and he is finally at peace. I thank God for sending John my way all those years ago and giving me the happiest years of my life. On Saturday 27th October, along with John’s parents and family, we will hold a coffee morning in the Killarney Avenue Hotel from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the hope of raising even more. Admission is by a donation at the door and raffle tickets will be on sale on the day for top prizes including Afternoon Tea for 4 in Fota Resort Cork, an overnight stay for 2 with dinner and breakfast in Killarney Avenue Hotel, Afternoon tea in the Park Hotel, Nathan Carter tickets for New Years Eve in the Gleneagle Hotel, Munster Rugby Tickets, Afternoon tea in Sheen Falls and over a hundred other fantastic vouchers and hampers on the day. Oh Happy Day choir will join us for a recital on the morning along with guest appearances, face painting, puppet show, magic and much more. Everyone is welcome to help support this worthy event in memory of the most amazing person in our lives.

TOWNTALK Town Mourns Tragic Loss Of Niall McGillicuddy The sense of loss was palpable at St Mary’s Cathedral on Tuesday as 16 year-old Niall McGillicuddy was laid to rest. The teenager tragically lost his battle with Leukaemia on Friday last. The funeral mass led by Fr Jim Lenihan was a sombre affair as friends, family and locals came to grips with the loss of one so young. A talented sportsman he played soccer with Celtic, football with Legion and also lined out for St Paul’s Basketball Club. “The more you love, the more you grieve. And around Killarney the last few days, there’s incredible grief. You can feel it in the incredible silence. It has enveloped a whole community,” said Fr Jim Lenihan. Niall studied at St Brendan’s College, where he was a very popular student and was a past pupil of the Mon. The funeral mass was a poignant story of a young talented and much loved teenager with a bright future ahead of him. It is difficult for the whole community to come to terms with the loss as Fr Jim Lenihan outlined. “The grief we’re feeling comes from the incredible disappointment felt at Niall’s death. There’s tears from grown men, young lads, friends and obviously, family because Niall was a man who loved and was incredibly loved.” Newly appointed Kerry Manager, Peter Keane attended along with friends and teammates. Over 400 people attended the funeral mass. Mary Counihan Molloy, Niall’s aunty delivered the family tribute at the mass. “He was one of a kind, witty, mischievous, considerate, and always positive. He bore his illness with great dignity and grace, without complaint, which really showed what a special boy he was,” said Mary. Niall is survived by his mother and father Sheila and Daithi and his sisters Ellen and Jane. May he Rest in Peace.

Cllr. John Sheahan, Mayor of Killarney Formally Welcomes A Delegation from Castiglione di Sicilia.

Castiglione

Words: Anne Lucey

The arrival of 28 people from Castiglione di Sicilia to Killarney on Thursday is a reminder of what a fine initiative that twining was. It was one of the first and was initiated by the then Papal nuncio a friend of an Italian lecturer who had a great affection for Killarney. It stretches back to 1987 with a delegation from Killarney going to the island of Sicily in July. And it is a great tribute to the Killarney Town Twinning Committee that despite not having a town council, the relationship has not only continued but thrives. I speak of people like the former town clerk Michael O’Leary, and former councillors Sheila Dickson and Sean Counihan. Their great work ensures that Killarney’s hard won relationships continue. By the way the town has one of the finest marble sculptures anywhere by one of the world’s foremost marble artists thanks to that link with the town on the north side of Etna. Next time you are in the little used council chamber in Killarney, take a look at what is on the wall!

Monsignor O’Flaherty Life Inspires Children’s Book The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society welcomes a new novel based on the Msgr’s life story - for the younger reader – titled “Leo’s War” it’s author Patricia Murphy has written many historically based books for the young reader, including the best-selling “Molly’s Diary” dealing with the 1916 Rising. The book will be formally launched in Killarney House on November 3rd as part of the 2018 Humanitarian Award Ceremony in honour of Mon. Hugh O’Flaherty. Jerry O’Grady of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society said, “We are absolutely delighted to see the publication of this book aimed at the younger reader. The author Patricia Murphy credits Colm O’Suilleabhain (Principal of The Mon), with suggesting the book. Three of her nephews had attended The Mon” and when Patricia visited the school a couple of years ago to talk to the 6th class, Principal Colm suggested she might next take on the challenge of writing about their “Mon Hero” – Hugh O’Flaherty. Patricia quietly took up Colm’s challenge culminating in the publication of this exciting new novel for 9 - 12-year olds” known as “The Vatican Pimpernel”, in World War 2. Leo’s War is based on the astonishing true story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, the Irish Oscar Schindler who saved over 6,500 lives during the German occupation in Rome during the Second World War. Told through the eyes of a twelve-year-old boy it is a dramatic rollercoaster of extraordinary human courage against the darkest evil by

The Europe Hotel & Resort Named Best Resort Hotel

The Europe Hotel & Resort in Killarney has been named Best Resort Hotel at the 2018 National Hospitality Awards, which took place in Dublin earlier this week. The cream of the Irish hospitality sector came together to celebrate the best in the business at this year’s awards. The Europe Hotel & Resort was delighted to take home the award for Best Resort Hotel in a very competitive category. “We are thrilled that the hotel has been named Best Resort Hotel in Ireland”, said Michael Brennan, Managing Director of Killarney Hotels.

the bestselling author of Molly’s Diary. “Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty is one of Ireland’s greatest humanitarians, honoured by The United States, Britain, Israel and Italy after the war, yet he is hardly a household name,” said publisher Paula Campbell. “Poolbeg is thrilled to bring his story to a new generation of children. And it’s a nail- biting page turner full of dramatic events that will have readers enthralled.”

Killarney Rises 10 Places In Litter Survey

The summer survey of litter levels by Irish Business Against Litter has seen Killarney rise 10 places to 6th in the ranking of 40 towns and cities. Tralee, meanwhile, has failed to improve on its ‘moderately littered’; status and is in 34th spot. The latest survey found that while Ireland’s towns and city centres are clean, disadvantaged areas of our cities are suffering increasing levels of litter. IBAL sees more mixed housing as the long-term solution to our urban litter problem. An Taisce assessed litter levels over the summer months on behalf of IBAL. 77% of towns and cities were found to be clean. Fermoy in Cork was the cleanest of the towns surveyed. The An Taisce report for Killarney stated: “A great achievement for Killarney to score so high during the peak tourist season. Clearly great care is taken with the overall presentation of the town. Street bins on Beech Road had a sign indicating ‘Dry Recyclable Litter Only’- the addition of such bins should encourage more recycling with very little effort on behalf of the public. Some examples of the top ranking sites included Bishop’s Lane, New Road, Main Street and Recycle Facility at Main Street – the latter was spotless and it is quite a rare occasion in IBAL surveys that Recycle Facilities are deemed to be spotless.”

News Briefs ... Killarney Looking Good is developing a long term plan for the future development of Tidy Towns. The Committee is inviting volunteers and the general public to a workshop on Wednesday next 24th October at 7.00pm in the Dromhall Hotel. The Committee is asking those wishing to attend to email killarneylookinggood@ gmail.com to confirm attendance.

Letter Dear Editor, Almost devoid of a national debate, we are careering into a referendum to remove the offence of blasphemy, defined in the Defamation Act (2009) as a matter intended to be “grossly abusive” to people because of their religion, and which is without any artistic or academic merit. If such abuse happened in a one-on-one context it would be considered bullying; in the context of goods and services, the Equal Status Acts would apply; and where skin-colour was involved it would be termed racism. Voting to allow such abuse is contrary to our society’s values of decency, fairness, and appreciation for the beneficial role religion has played in many peoples’ lives. It would ignore the lessons of history that such vilification leads to horrors; from NAZI Germany, to religious bigotry in the North, to ISIS defaming the religious beliefs of the Yazidis in Iraq. We would lose this minimum standard of decency, so vital to allowing free-speech, the life-blood of a properly functioning democracy. We would also lose a means of resolving grievances in accordance with the ‘rule-oflaw’. In some countries – because the hands of community leaders are legally tied – disaffected extremists have claimed a false legitimacy as defenders of their communities, with tragic results. Finally, our objective definition of the offence of blasphemy, with its insistence upon “intentionality” is designed to remove accusations from the toxic atmosphere of personalised conflict and the inevitable injustice that characterises some Muslim countries. Our anti-blasphemy law works unobtrusively and ought to be vigorously promoted worldwide. I will be voting “No”. Yours, Gearoid Duffy, Lee Road, Cork City.

Views On The News

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

The ‘Bull’ Is Back The news that John O’Donoghue, former minister for Justice and Ceann Comhairle, and now distinguished barrister, has been nominated to seek to contest a county council seat for Fianna Fail must surely energise politics, which is seriously flagging in this county. All politics is local, but that does not mean it has to have a parochial mentality. The unfortunate thing is, and I have written before about this, not only are all our current TDs villagers, but worse, many display a village mentality. And much of it is downright embarrassing. It is an extraordinary thing that not one of Kerry’s major towns is producing a politician or sending them to our national parliament. I think there is a message there – we do not treat politics terribly seriously anymore. O’Donoghue, the urbane Cahersiveen man, whose intellect is not a matter of dispute, and who has always followed a vision, in particular the model of his local hero the European statesman Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator, a man of global proportions, must surely put a bit of fizz, not to mention dignity back into things, and raise the tone, while still managing his local area. And it has to be ironic, that John re-enters “the ring” at a time when

the spotlight is shining on Labour’s Michael D Higgins and his scandalous expenses with his €3,000 euro a night hotel room in Geneva and sending the State Car up the road to Belfast while he takes a flight. And that’s what we know about. I always thought it was very wrong of Labour, especially of Gilmore and Higgins, to bring the Kerry man down over a trip (well maybe two) to the races, and always suspected the truth would come out about Labour’s profligate

attitude to the public purse. O’Donoghue’s re-entry is doubly ironic in a week during the publication of a book on Politics in Kerry by Owen O’Shea, former Labour party press officer , and Gordon Revington, brother of Dick Spring’s former close advisor Joe, now a Senior Counsel . The cover features Dick, John and the late Jackie Healy-Rae and the book will surely remind us of the fine politicians we once had strutting on the national and international stage.

Not that I was a blind fan of either O’Donoghue or Spring– at a dinner in the Aghadoe Heights which he threw for the press when minister, John O’Donoghue told me I had caused more trouble for him than anyone else present. I hope to get the chance to do so again, after the next local elections in the Kenmare electoral area! Meanwhile, it should not be forgotten that while we might be getting a bit of a road here and a bit of a bridge there, from others – and even that well has all but dried up now for Killarney - it was O’Donoghue who brought us the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism, the sports centre and myriad “monuments” and other real stuff. On the day he lost his seat in the leisure centre in Killarney he had brought funding for, he said he would need no poster, as he had monuments everywhere to remind people of what he had done for south Kerry. Now, Tralee is doing fine without him, given all the attention it is getting from all our TDs and our council officials, and practically no-one to fight Killarney’s case, but would Spring ever return? I hear he has an affection for Killarney, and we could do with someone.

Parking Parking problems in the area of the Demesne are if anything worsening. I would have expected them to have eased by now with the return to work and school and with less leisure time. But it is not the case. The tourist season is busy and we have lots of retired people who thankfully are extremely active. Not only that but you have pressure from funeral and mass traffic almost daily. Last Tuesday a red car was parked right on the cusp of Kingsbridge, and onto the road. Whether they were at the Cathedral or in the Demesne, I don’t know, but what I do know is that the whole road was held down to a one way system and traffic backed up along Mission Road and onto New Street. It is the same all summer long. If it is not a bus, it’s a car and the new wider footpaths allow no possibility of overtaking. The car space in the cathedral car park is taken up with people working in the town, or walking in the De-

mesne, so the cars there spread into the grounds of the cathedral and in a way that takes very much from the Pugin building. St Mary’s Cathedral was never designed to have cars scattered around it. What is happening of course is that it is not just traffic that is backing up, it is parking too. And it is not just the Demesne that is bringing pressure – Killarney House opened last year and not one extra parking space for visitors to the house was provided there either. Is it time the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht takes the bit in its mouth when it comes to parking? The Department provides two major attractions in Killarney, both managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service yet they provide not a single parking space between them. Out in Muckross House, acres of parkland have been turned into car parks to facilitate visitors there. Is it not high time the NPWS were asked to pony up to their responsibilities in the town

Picture taken yesterday.

and convert some of its grounds to car space to facilitate access to both Killarney House and to the Demesne? Or contribute to a multi-story in Beach Road?

At the very least our town management badly needs to get moving and approach their State sister for a hand with the chronic parking problems in Killarney - a town which they manage.

Diesel Cars Hit Hard In Budget

l a c i d e m s s rtohe reeks | killarney

V

Motoring body, SIMI disappointed at tax increase on diesel cars in Budget Commenting after the Budget decision to increase VRT on the registration of diesel cars, SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said, “This was a poorly considered measure that appears to have been included to give the perception of an environmental focus in the Budget. “Concerns about diesel centre on air quality in cities but city-based car buyers have already moved away from buying new diesel cars, the Dublin diesel share having reduced from 70% in 2014 to 51% this year. “The bigger impact here will be on rural and business buyers for whom diesel is still the better environmental choice. The real problem is that this type of provision is likely to have a different impact to what is intended, for instance it may cause some purchasers to postpone their car change, reducing the potential to add cleaner new cars into the fleet.” “The real disappointment for businesses and jobs in our sector is that we were already facing an increase in VRT in January, only on the price of a new car, in the region of €450, due to the new EU emissions test (WLTP). “This additional 1% surcharge, announced in the Budget, is likely to add a further €400 on average to a new diesel car from January. With the low value of Sterling driving up the number of older cars being imported into Ireland the Motor Industry was already apprehensive about the outlook for 2019. Surveyed before this VRT increase, 73% of Franchise dealers were already anticipating a worse year in 2019 because of Brexit. “From a revenue point of view, if even only 5,000 new cars are replaced by imports as a result of this VRT increase, the State would face a net reduction of €20 Million in tax receipts rather than the Department’s projected increase of €25 Million. “The industry had been seeking some consideration in respect of the impact of the new emissions test on VRT in January. In this context, the additional imposition of this Budget VRT increase in the full knowledge of how Brexit is currently impacting shows a total lack of concern for businesses in our sector.”

Budget Implications For The Motor Industry • 1% VRT surcharge across all VRT Bands for diesel cars, new and used imports • Extension of VRT Reliefs for Plug-In and Conventional Hybrids until the end of 2019 • No increase in carbon taxes • No increase in fuel duties • LPG commercial vehicles relief - A new accelerated capital allowances scheme for gas-propelled vehicles and refuelling equipment • Buses – no diesel-only buses for the urban public service obligation (PSO) bus fleets after July 2019. The 0% Benefit-in-kind rate for electric vehicles is being extended for a period of 3 years, with a cap of €50,000 on the Original Market Value of the vehicle.

VAT On Hairdressing Unfair Words: Anne Lucey

I take issue with the tax hike on hair dressing. While the VAT on the hotel and restaurant increase could be said to affect everyone equally- that on hairdressing is anti-woman. Women use hairdressers much more than men; and a lot of the men who make up the vast majority of TDs in the Dail, are in any case bald themselves so a visit to the salon is way below their radar. I see Michael Healy-Rae was opening a beauty parlour extension in the heart of Killarney. I am not being personal, but I suspect if he ever took off the black cap there is not that much evidence of trips to hairdressers. Now I have an appeal to the black capped TD - bald or not would he champion the cause of the hair dressers for the women of Ireland?

Killarney’s Scott O’Sullivan Celebrates National Baby Swimming Week

V

Water Babies, Ireland’s baby and toddler swimming school, is celebrating National Baby Swimming Week 15th – 21st October as 5,000 babies and toddlers across Ireland take the plunge with their Mums and Dads and enjoy all the benefits of baby swimming. Apparently babies love swimming! It’s one of the few things they can do from birth. Because they’re free of the restrictions of gravity, and able to use muscles they’d never use until they start rolling, crawling, walking and running, babies love the sense of freedom water gives them. Scott (2 years, 3 months) has been attending Water Babies Classes at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney since he was just four months old. “He’s a very confident and determined young man who likes to do his own thing. Water Babies has not only given him a love of water and swimming it has also taught him the joy of singing (he sings Water Babies songs all the time in and out of the water), music and sharing,” said Scott’s Mum Sandra. During the summer Scott spent lots of time swimming in the sea which is a lot different to our pool and never had any trouble because of all the skills he learned at Water Babies. “He even tried his hand at surfing and paddle boarding and passed on the skills he learnt at Water Babies to his big brother and cousins,” said Mum Sandra

Two Killarney rally crews embarked on an epic 2,500km road trip across Europe ending up in the Republic of San Marino to attend the world-renowned Rally Legends event. Many would be happy on reaching their destination to park up and rest. But not these guys! They made this epic journey to compete in the Rally Legends event itself. This is generally regarded as the ‘must do’ Historic rally festival of the year. Father and son crew, Kevin O’Donoghue and Colin O’Donoghue from Park Road were competing in their immaculately prepared BMW M3 and Tadhg O’Sullivan from Spa navigated by Eoin O’Leary from Ballycasheen entered their beautifully prepared Ford Escort Mk 2 on the event. With drivers’ names such as Bianchi, De Marco, Di Giuseppe, O’Donoghue and O’Sullivan on the entry list makes for truly international event. This event is a favourite for both current and past WRC crews alike. Mikko Hirvonen, Craig Breen and Kris Meeke were in attendance. The event takes place around the foothills of San Marino. Setting off from the Olympic Stadium in Serravalle, competitors experienced night stages, special spectator stages and even a stage that rallies up the side of a mountain laden with hairpins reaching the top only to be greeted by the distinguish residents of the Guaita Fortress. This invitation only event showcased some of the best and most important rally cars in the World drawing spectators from every corner of the globe. Both crews represented both Ireland and the Killarney and District Motor Club proudly. They adapted well to the terrain and narrow roads of Italy. Their flamboyant driving styles, were hugely admired by the enthusiastic Italian rally fans. Kevin and Colin had a spectacular run through the night stages, but unfortunately retired on day two with a mechanical issue. While Tadhg and Eoin showcased their car handling skills and ability throughout the event, gaining the respect of the whole Italian Rallying community. There was a huge following of Kerry fans that travelled out to support their local heroes and witness the amazing spectacle of World Rallying.

Tim Moynihan in Rwanda. Pics: Sean Curtin

From GNEEVEGUILA to RWANDA

Tim Moynihan’s Last Cow A big-hearted Gneeveguila farmer has spoken of his joy at the seeing first-hand how his very last dairy cow, which he gifted to a family in Rwanda, has transformed lives. Tim Moynihan and his daughter Doreen travelled to the heart of Rwanda in central/ eastern Africa to see themselves the remarkable impact that the last dairy cow from his farm has had on the Rwandan family. Tim gave up dairy farming six years ago and rather than sell his last cow he donated it through Bóthar to a family near Rwamagana in east Rwanda. The Co Kerry farmer said he was overjoyed at seeing the difference the cow had made and also at being reunited with her one last time. “I never dreamt in my life I’d ever again see that cow. I think she recognised me. We took a photograph of that cow before she left the farm and I have that photograph at home. The calf is the spit of her mother, star on the forehead and the stripe on the shoulder.” The single cow is just one of an ever growing Bóthar¹ herd that is transforming the lives of families across Rwanda a nation that was savaged by the fastest killing spree in the history of the world almost 25 years ago when up to 1million people were slaughtered in its 90-day genocide. The aid agency has been sending Irish dairy cows and other food-and-income producing animals such as goats, pigs and sheep to Rwanda it also has projects elsewhere in Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia - since the 90s thanks to the generosity of the Irish farmers and the wider public. Its current programme in Rwanda is in support of the Rwandan government’s One Cow Per Family project which aims to reduce extreme poverty in rural areas of the country by providing each poor family with a cow.

Looking back on the donation and the reasons for it, he said: “My farm is situated in East Kerry. And we milked cows there all my life. And when we decided to give up the cows, we went into suckling. “We said we’d donate this heifer to a country that would need it more, and this was the last heifer to come from my farm.” He was also delighted with her condition. The farming practice is very good here,” he said. I’m delighted. Couldn’t be happier that I made this donation. I would over and over again.” “I’ve heard that she has been very successful with the farmer. She’s a champion cow. They had little hope of him ever being a good farmer. Well, he’s beaten all the odds; that cow is the best milker in that part of Rwanda.” Tim’s daughter Doreen travelled with him and spoke of the impact the trip had on her father. “This trip means a huge amount to my father to see how his donation has changed the lives of this family and what legacy this cow has given from its offspring being passed on and the help it’s given to other families, not just one, she said. “The experience we just had, seeing my father’s cow now on this farm was just amazing; quite emotional actually to see how well she’s done and how much she’s done for the family. The donation of Irish cows, which have a yield six times that of the best local cows, have had a transformational effect on the lives of an estimated 1,000 plus families. Bóthar heifers arrive in calf, with each recipient family agreeing to pass on the first-born female calf to her to another family. Bóthar returns each year to re-impregnate the cows, so the cycle continues. Prior to being given a heifer, each family undergoes a six-month programme of training in animal husbandry, water-harvesting and basic horticulture practices.

The experience we just had, seeing my father’s cow now on this farm was just amazing.

McHale & Coleman To Attend Rally Awards

1984-Billy Coleman

The Killarney and District Motor Club (K&DMC) are the proud hosts of the 2018 Irish Rally Tarmac Rally Championship Award Dinner this Saturday night. This prestigious event is being held in the Gleneagle Hotel, a long-established venue for renowned Rally of the Lakes. Rally legends, Billy Coleman and Austin McHale will be two notable attendees at this prestigious event as both the Killarney and District Motor Club and the Irish Rally Championship are celebrating their 40th anniversary. Surprisingly Billy’s only tarmac title was in 1984 driving in an Opel Manta 400 although taken in emphatic fashion despite the best efforts of Dealer Team Opel Ireland team mate Austin MacHale. Wins on the Circuit of Ireland, Donegal, Cork and Killarney made it a very successful year for the Corkman. Austin McHale was a five-time Irish Rally Tarmac Champion. After threatening to make the breakthrough on a number of occasions, luck was finally on the side of MacHale in 1983 and again in ’85, ’86, ’97 and Austin’s fifth and final title came in 1998 when he took victory on the opening round in Galway and followed up with a Circuit of Ireland win, his second on the prestigious event. A pair of second places in Killarney and Donegal clinched the title. Many of the past winners along with the 2018 recipients will be in attendance on the night. Rally fans can be guaranteed an entertaining night with stories past and present from the crews of these epic championship battles. For any rally fan this is a must. Tickets available locally form Dermot Healy on 087 257 4766.

Celebrating 29 Years Of Fashion In Fossa Great news, we’re back for our 29th year to present our annual Fashion Show at the magnificent Hotel Europe & Resort on Tuesday 30th October 2018 at 8pm. Our first Fashion Show took place in the Old Church Fossa on 4th Feb 1988. This year we are anticipating over 500 lovers of fashion to experience samples of excellent wares available to fashion devotees in Killarney & Kerry. Every year funds raised from this event go to a community project in our parish. This year we’re making a special effort to raise funds to support the extension of the Fossa Way. The Fossa Way is a marvellous facility and a popular amenity which benefits the parish, residents of Killarney and visitors who enjoy Killarney and its surrounds. The ambition of the steering group for the Greenway project is to extend the Fossa Way all the way to the Gap of Dunloe. “Our objective is to help create a safe walking and cycling route from Killarney, through Fossa Village, to the Gap of Dunloe, for the benefit of residents and visitors alike,” said Connor Hennigan, Chairman of the steering group. The inaugural Irish Book Week takes place from 27th October – 3rd November, a nationwide celebration of Irish books and bookshops. A collaboration between Bookselling Ireland and Publishing Ireland, the week will see events taking place throughout the country, celebrating Irish books and the central role bookshops play in Irish society and culture. The week aims to encourage people into their local bookshop, and to highlight the important role bookshops play in the fabric of Irish life – fostering cultural creativity, community spirit and generating economic activity. Authors celebrating Irish Book Week include Donal Ryan, John Boyne, Paul Howard, Hazel Gaynor, Fionnuala Kearney, Carmel Harrington, Julian Vignoles, Lynn Buckle, Cónal Creedon, Conor O’Clery, Cethan Leahy, Shona Shirley MacDonald, and many more to be confirmed. Author and Irish Book Ambassador Donal Ryan said: “I’m honoured to be chosen as ambassador for a week that celebrates books and booksellers. Books are precious, and shops full of paper and ink books are sacred places, fortresses of empathy and light in this darkening world.” 14-year-old children’s books ambassador Sarah Fitzgerald added: “Bookshops are an integral part of our communities and I am delighted to be supporting this super initiative Irish Book Week. Children who read think more, feel more, know more, listen more, empathise more, learn more, write more, understand more, succeed more and are more often happy. Who wouldn’t want to get behind this?”

Book Review

A Keeper

By Graham Norton Words: Dolores Dunlea

Graham Norton’s debut novel ‘Holding’ was a great success winning him the Irish Independent Popular Fiction award in 2016, his new novel ‘A Keeper’ is already heading to be a bestseller, but is it a keeper, thats for you to decide. Elizabeth returns to her small rural home in Buncarragh after her mothers death. She leaves her tiny cramped apartment in New York she shares with her son Zach. Recently divorced, she carries her own regrets and woes. After turning the key to Convent Hill she felt everything looked the same, nobody lived there now. Elizabeth was here to wrap up her old life as there was nothing left to hold on to. While rummaging through her mothers wardrobe she finds a dark wooden box, inside she discovers a thin pile of letters bound by a cream ribbon. Elizabeth never knew who her father was and wonders if the letters contain the truth about him. After a visit to her mothers solicitor she’s amazed to have inherited a house near the sea, thus starting her search for the truth about her roots. The story is cleverly crafted between the ‘Then’ and ‘Now’ Patricia was a 32 year old who nursed her own mother until her death, she feared she would be left of the shelf. Her friend Rosemary urged her to place an ad in ‘The Farmer’s Journal’ section ‘Looking for Love’ and so she does signing it ‘Lonely Leinster Lady’ To her surprise she receives a reply from West Cork farmer Edward Foley. She agrees to meet him. Without spoiling the plot she embarks on a journey with him and his domineering mother. Shades of Hitchcock come to mind as the story progresses. Graham’s storytelling is compelling, he has a great understanding of human nature, relationships are sensitively managed between mothers and daughters so to mothers and their sons. His wry sense of hummer raises its head every now and then, constant tea drinking and naming the dogs Maxi, Dick and Twink spring to mind. This is a gripping tale of frustration, love, darkness and an overwhelming search for identity.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Recreational Marijuana Use Legal In Canada From Today

CANADA will today become the first country to legalise the recreational use of cannabis but not everyone is convinced it is the right move. On the eve of legalisation, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended the historic but controversial change, which has been welcomed by entrepreneurs but sharply questioned by medical professionals. “We’re not legalising cannabis because we think it’s good for our health, we’re doing it because we know it’s not good for our children,” he said as he arrived in parliament. “We know we need to do a better job to protect our children and to eliminate or massively reduce the profits that go to organised crime.” Canada’s Cannabis Act, which fulfils a promise Trudeau made in the 2015 election campaign, lifts a 95-year prohibition, and makes Canada only the second nation after Uruguay to legalise the drug. Demand is such that retailers in Manitoba and Nova Scotia retailers are expecting to quickly run out of product, citing a supply shortage. In Ontario, buyers will have to wait for their pot to arrive in the mail, after it is ordered online — until the opening of retail storefronts in 2019. Canadians consumed 773 tonnes of cannabis in 2017. Despite the government’s hopes, the black market is

not expected to disappear overnight. To make that point, the CD Howe Institute noted that the federal government has licensed enough producers to supply only 30 to 60 per cent of demand in the first year. Bill Blair, a former police chief in Toronto who is Trudeau’s pointman for pot legalisation, remains optimistic, however, that the legal market can grab as much as half of share of the market from illicit dealers within the first year.

Many people think of legalisation as an event, but it’s a process,” Blair told AFP. “For almost a century, criminal enterprises had complete control of this market, 100 per cent of its production and distribution and they profited in the billions of dollars each year. I suspect they’re not going to go gently into the night,” he said. Fully shutting down the black market will likely take up to four years, according to Justice Department documents cited by Canadian media.

Trump Corner

Stephen Colbert: ‘Trump Has Great Affection For Racism’ Late-night host criticised the president’s latest attempt to defend Mohammed bin Salman while he also found time to criticise Stormy Daniels again The late-night host discussed Donald Trump’s attack on Stormy Daniels and his continued defence of Saudi prince Mohammed bin Salman. On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert started by talking about Stormy Daniels and the collapse of her defamation suit, launched after Donald Trump called her a liar on Twitter. She’s now been ordered to pay his legal fees. If she’s looking for a way to raise money, I’ve got a good idea: launch a GoFundMe campaign called ‘For $10,000,000 I will stop describing Donald Trump’s penis,’” Colbert joked. The reason the

judge gave for the decision was that he categorised the tweet as part of a the normal rhetoric of hyperbole used within political discourse. “It’s only normal because Trump made it normal,” Colbert countered. Trump’s response on Twitter was to both brag and call Daniels Horseface. “Yes Horseface, you heard it straight from the horse’s ass,” Colbert responded. He then brought up the alleged murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi and how the latest reports suggest that parts of the Saudi embassy in Turkey were re-painted after his disappearance. Trump has so far suggested Khashoggi was targeted by “rogue killers” leading Colbert to joke that he will now have “blamed it on a gang of rogue painters”. He also called the president “stupid and delusional” for believing the Saudi defence.

Mobile Addiction? A survey has revealed that we check our phone on average 57 times a day. The Mobile Consumer Survey by Deloitte says 85% of 18-75-year-olds in Ireland use their smartphones while walking - the equivalent of around 2.8 million people. The research shows that Ireland’s love of smartphones continues to affect almost every aspect of daily life, including at night-time. Some 44% check their phone during the night, with checking the time (33%), social media interactions (11%) and instant messages/text messages (10%) the top three nocturnal activities. Among 18-24-year-olds, 60% check their phones in the middle of the night while just under 30% check social media notifications. Overall, 40% of Irish people look at their smartphones within five minutes of waking, and 76% do so within

half an hour. And at the end of the day, 30% check their phone within five minutes of going to sleep. The research also reveals that 89% of people use their phone when spending time with family and friends, and 74% do so when in a restaurant with family and friends. In terms of communicating with others, consumers use their phones most for text messaging 68% do this on a daily basis. This is followed by voice calls (65%), instant messaging (64%), e-mail (63%) and social networks (59%). While 54% of Irish consumers read the news on their phone on a daily basis, 25% watch short videos or live posts/ stories, 21% watch videos shared on instant messaging networks and 18% take photos. Just 2% use their phones on a daily basis to bet or gamble. One-fifth of Irish consumers have between 11 and 20 apps on their phone and 19% have between six and 10.

Bookies Crying All The Way To The Bank

The Government have proposed to increase the betting tax from 1% to 2% from January 2019. No wonder the Irish Bookmakers Association are firing out scare mongering press releases to every news outlet in the country. This week they highlighted that up to 9 shops will close in Kerry with the potential loss of 55 jobs. To put this all in perspective Boylesports reportedly generated €1.5 billion in revenues in 2017. Paddypower Betfair had revenues of €1.9 billion. As we say they are crying all the way to the bank. The industry has benefited from light touch regulation over the past two decades and the massive land grab online by the likes of Boylesports and Paddy Power tells you there is money flowing in. The Chairperson of the Irish Bookmakers Association Sharon Byrne is quoted as being ‘shocked’ that the government could allow a 100% tax increase. Here at the Home & Away desk we are surprised that Sharon hasn’t been reading the papers over the past few years. It has been well sign posted that the whole sector is going to be more tightly regulated. “The pain will be particularly acute in the rural Ireland where it is often more difficult for people to find alternative employment,” said Chairperson Sharon Byrne. Gambling has been called the silent addiction in Ireland. The problem is rife and has been covered by our own Adam Moynihan. It appears that in Killarney the issue is very much under the radar. If you ask the management of Talbot Grove about the issue you will get a very different take on the gambling industry than the one outlined by the Sharon Byrne. The bookies are on the wrong side on this measure and you can be sure the government isn’t finished raising revenues from this sector just yet.

General Election Rumours Hit Fever Pitch

It seems the guardians of the country are not happy with their lot and are potentially aiming for a December general election. Our sources have nominated Friday 7th December as a possible date for the country to go to the polls. There will be a collective sigh across the country and county if this is the case. The public have no appetite for an election at the moment. The passing of a fairly tame budget was a damp squib with no real purpose other than to shift the pennies from one side of the ledger to the other. The general public will not be best pleased to see an election coming and won’t be very receptive to callers of any hue to their doors, in what is sure to be a cold and wet winter. Why are they even considering it? There isn’t anyone shouting in Kerry for an election and with the presidential election resonating with the public like a lead balloon in a swimming pool they should very much reconsider. It appears though that grassroots are being fired up for the campaign trail. Good luck with that! It has been reported that Sinn Fein have been canvassing in Tralee this week and we all know that the Healy-Rae’s aren’t afraid of getting boots on the ground when it comes to voting time. Fine Gael need to think long and hard before going to the polls before Christmas. It could seriously back fire on them. The current polls wouldn’t inspire confidence that the make up of the Dail would be that much different. The most likely result is more of the same or a coalition with Sin Feinn. No one knows what will happen with Labour this time round. They need to settle down up there in Dublin and focus on the Brexit issue. It’s the number 1 concern of the country at the moment.

Over 738,000 Tune In For Presidential Election Special

Pic: Brian McEvoy Photography

It was billed as the first TV debate with all the candidates featured. The debate aired on Virgin Media One (formerly TV 3) and the president decided to attend having snubbed RTE’s Claire Byrne show on Monday night. Michael D is enjoying the fact he can pick when, where and how he wants to debate. Nobody missed the fact that the president had chosen to attend the debate led by Pat Kenny after ‘tweet gate’ in 2011. Many viewers tuned in to see how Pat and Sean Gallagher would get on after the infamous RTE debate in 2011. I’m happy to report that there was no reference to ‘tweet gate’ or anything of note between the candidate and the veteran presenter. An average audience of 434,000 tuned in to see Pat Kenny ask the big questions of President Michael D Higgins, Peter Casey, Gavin Duffy, Senator Joan Freeman, Seán Gallagher and MEP Liadh Ní Riada.

As presidential debates go it was unwieldy with 6 candidates all getting to have there say. Joan Freeman had to demand attention from Pat Kenny at one stage when he forgot to go back to her on one question. The big talking point was Peter Casey’s comments on travellers. We won’t be giving them any ink here due to the fact that they were constructed comments to get more name recognition. Up to last week no one know he was even running. Now he has taken a play from Trump’s campaigning handbook and we all know where we are with ‘The Donald’ at the moment. The Debate Best Quotes “To talk about not turning up, I’ve been turning up since 1969,” said Michael D Higgins in response to his ahem, lack of participation in all debates. “I want to say we have to be careful how we’re disqualifying people about going into public life. “To say Joan can’t be a president for all people because

she voted no in Repeal the Eighth, considering the work she has done, is wrong,” said candidate Gavin Duffy. “Thank you, but I don’t need rescuing,” Ms Freeman responded. Ouch! Conclusion If you were tuning in for the first time to the campaign then it would not have swayed you either way. I wasn’t repulsed by anyone bar Peter Casey and his traveller remarks. Joan Freeman at times was lost. The Sin Fein hopeufl MEP Liadh Ní Riada is an able performer and is my tip to come in second to Michael D. The president is in a very strong position going into the last week of campaigning. The electorate right now, are not now that interested in the election. The general on the street is Michael D did a good job, sure there is a questions to answer on expenses but don’t all our public representative have a case to answer on that one. Next big date is on Prime Time next week with David McCullagh.

Research has shown that the average person will change career five to seven times during their working life. The reasons for considering a career change vary from resetting goals, altering priorities, examining personal values and simply the desire to try something new. Whatever the reason, choosing to change careers can be a daunting one, so it is important to consider carefully the factors influencing your decision. Timing is critical as it takes energy and commitment to embark on the research you need to undertake in order to make a career change. It was a nostalgic occasion for over 20 past-pupils from the Leaving Cert Classes of 1968 who revisited in St Brendan’s College, Killarney, on Saturday last. A highlight of the 50th anniversary celebrations was a visit to the college and a warm welcome from its president, Sean Coffey, and some present day students. Looked at from the outside, ‘’The Sem’’ looks much the same as it did in the 1960’s, but there are huge changes inside to meet the needs of education today. The students of 50 years ago received a strictly academic education, with subjects such as Latin and Greek on the curriculum, and some of those revisiting the college were surprised, for instance, to find a large woodwork room. Some of them had not met since they left the college and others had never been back there. They were given a tour of the buildings by Mr Coffey. ‘’The clear impression we got from Mr Coffey is that the college is moving ahead and providing an education to meet the needs of today’s young people. The changes since our time there almost defy description. Simply a different world,’’ said Donal Hickey, of the Classes of 1968. Ten deceased classmates were remembered at 6.15pm Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral, on Saturday evening. Some of the recently deceased include Paudie O’Connor and Phil O’Sullivan, both Killarney, and Donagh Murphy, from the Barraduff area. Member of the European Parliament and former GAA President Sean Kelly was a special guest at a dinner by the past-pupils on Saturday night. A former student in St Brendan’s, he sat the Leaving Cert in 1969 and later became a teacher in the college.

New Book

A Century Of Politics In The Kingdom

V

A new book reviewing the last 100 years of Kerry politics launched yesterday in Tralee. Written by Kerry authors Owen O’Shea and Gordon Revington, it captures all the scandals, punch-ups, election-campaign shenanigans, bitter inter-dynastic contests and the stories of the ground-breaking politicians from Kerry who made their mark on the national stage. Since the establishment of Dáil Éireann 100 years ago, Kerry’s political history has taken many lively, colourful and compelling turns – largely thanks to its wide roster of fascinating politicians, from Austin Stack to Kathleen O’Connor and John Marcus O’Sullivan to Dick Spring. Drawing on original research, newly published material from the political parties’ archives and candid interviews, A Century of Politics in the Kingdom is published to coincide with the centenary of the First Dáil. Owen O’Shea and Gordon Revington mine a unique political environment. They contend with the dramatic and entertaining episodes, and with equal depth they outline the controversies and seminal debates as well as the vociferous character of Kerry’s TDs, senators and political hopefuls over the past century. From the first sitting of Dáil Éireann, when Piaras Béaslaí TD read its Democratic Programme, to Dan Kiely’s Supreme Court challenge on how votes are counted in Ireland, and the role of several Kerry ministers in sensitive Anglo-Irish negotiations, Kerry politicians have been at the heart of matters nationally, both symbolic and significant. Even if, as is continually attested, they have had to shout a little louder than many of their counterparts to have their priorities heard, Kerry politicians have indelibly influenced the course of Irish politics and left a lasting legacy in their home county. Remarkable tales, like the councillor who was unseated for plying voters with drink, the north Kerry woman who became a politician in Pakistan, the aristocrat who was invited to Buckingham Palace as a child and went on to become the first woman elected to Kerry County Council, the Kerry senator who received an apology from the BBC, the story of all of Kerry’s female politicians, the councillor who took his own council to court, the night the gardaí were called to a meeting of a Fianna Fáil cumann in north Kerry, and the Dáil by-election candidate deselected because he wasn’t popular enough, all feature. Featuring the first ever definitive record of every Kerry Oireachtas member since 1919, A Century of Politics in the Kingdom captures the excitement and tension, the rivalries and resentments, the key debates and discussions, and the good old-fashioned fun and games that have characterised the political cauldron in the county over the last century.

Stamp Set Celebrates Electoral Breakthrough Dáil Éireann held in the Mansion House, January 21st, 1919 (Photo courtesy of the National Library). The stamps are available from Thursday 18th October at main post offices, from the stamp counters at Dublin’s GPO or online at www.irishstamps.ie. They were unveiled this week at an exhibition in Dáil Éireann marking the 100th anniversary of the parliamentary vote for women in Ireland. Present was Senator Ivana Bacik who chaired ‘Votail 100’ the body set up by Houses of the Oireachtas to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the parliamentary vote for women in Ireland. The 1918 General Election saw the defeat of the moderate nationalist Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP) by Sinn Féin. The IPP dominated the Irish political

landscape since the 1880s. However, the popular vote had changed by 1918, with Sinn Féin candidates winning 73 out of 105 seats. The election set in motion events including the first Irish Parliament ‘Dáil Eireann,’ (1919) and the international recognition of an independent Irish state, the Irish Free State, in 1922. The election marked the first time many Irish women could participate in the national vote. Votes for women was part of 19th century societal change, including industrialisation, the advent of WWI and growing support for the suffrage movement. In 1918 legislative change in the UK Parliament was adopted by Ireland, granting women of property over the age of 30 the same voting rights as men.

Art Exhibition

Artist Carmel T. Madigan will host an Art Exhibition at the Brehon Hotel Killarney over the October Bank Holiday weekend, on Sunday 28th and Monday 29th October respectively. This Exhibition ‘Naturalism’, will show for the first time, her new work just completed, and will consist of over 40 of her distinctive artworks both new and recent. Carmel sources her inspiration from the rich and varied details and layers of nature. She has studied flora and fauna in great detail for the past ten years, producing two well received books on the topic. Some of the works portray a powerful microcosm of intimate spaces, like lichen coated rocks, and hedgerows under pressure from winds and rain. The works are playful and upbeat but pay hommage to radical events like Hurricane Ophelia, and the Winter storms that batter our coastline. Carmel grew up on the Loophead Peninsula in county Clare, a wind and ocean exposed headland. She has been a professional artist for 25 years, and here works are held in many public and private collections at home and abroad, including the OPW, Bank of Ireland, and the Department of Education. The exhibition, at the Brehon Hotel is open to all on Sunday 28th October and Monday 29th from 11am to 7pm daily.

Killarney Golf Club Mired in Controversy A specially commissioned report into the management and operation of the Killarney Golf Club is causing uproar amongst members. Now over 50 members have signed a motion demanding a Special General Meeting to discuss the report that highlights a breakdown of communication between the Management Council and the General Manager Cormac Flannery. The members also want the contents of the report to be made public. The Management Council is responsible for the control and management of the Killarney Golf Club. Cormac Flannery is the General Manager and it appears that key findings in the report focus on the relationship between the Management Council and Mr Flannery. In a shock development, Club Professional David Keating has quit the club having served as the club professional for 11 years. An AGM is being held on November 5th.

October 2018 Marks The 75Th Anniversary Of The Birth Of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty’s Rome Escape Line

Henrietta Chevalier

John May

SUMMER OF 1943

During 1941/42 Pope Pius XII had appointed a Papal Nuncio to visit the POW Camps throughout Italy and Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty was appointed as the Nuncio’s secretary and translator. The camps were controlled by the Italian fascist forces and Allied POWs were being treated very badly. Monsignor Hugh actively represented the POW’s – demanding improvements in their dire conditions. These interventions resulted in the dismissal of two Camp Commanders. Apart from providing the POWs with moral support, discreet updates on how the war was going and delivering thousands of books etc., Monsignor Hugh also carried away with him cryptic messages from the POWs. With the assistance of the New Zealand priest Fr Eoin Sneddon, these cryptic messages were broadcast on Vatican Radio and in

this way brought comfort to the POW’s families back in Britain and elsewhere. The Italian Fascist leader Mussolini complained about Monsignor Hugh to the Vatican Authorities and he was relieved of his POW Camp Visitation role. However, his earlier work in the POW camps subsequently prompted many escapees to seek him out in Rome during the summer of 1943. Throughout the summer of 1943, Monsignor Hugh and his small team in Rome continued to respond to those in need of refuge. This rescue effort was run by the so-called “Council of Three”, i.e., Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, John May (British Embassy Staff member) and Count Sarsfield Salazar (Swiss Legation). With the invaluable help of brave people like Henrietta Chevalier, they were hiding increasing numbers throughout Rome.

AUTUMN OF 1943

After the fall of Mussolini’s Fascist Regime, behind the scenes negotiations were taking place between the reformed Italian leadership and the Allied Command. An Armistice was secretly agreed in principle on September 3rd - the same day the British Eight Army under Marshall Montgomerylanded in Reggio Calabria in southern Italy. Five days later, on September 8th, the Armistice was officially announced and on the following day, September 9th, the US Fifth Army under General Mark Clarke landed in Salerno with additional British Troops simultaneously landing in Taranto. Following the September 8th announcement of the Armistice, the Italian controlled POW Camps were left unguarded – allowing the POW’s to escape into the Italian countryside. However, in the mistaken belief that the Allies would rapidly reach the camps and not wanting unarmed escapees to inadvertently get caught up in the ensuing battles, British Intelligence (MI9) reportedly instructed prisoners to remain in place in their camps until Allied forces reached them. Unfortunately, the German forces won that particular race and quickly took control of most of Italy including the POW camps. As a result of this some 50,000 POWs were detained and transferred to POW camps in Germany & Poland. It is estimated that another 30,000 POWs had wisely disregarded the original MI9 instruction to remain in camp and did manage to escape into the Italian countryside before the German forces took control. Some were recaptured, while many managed to make good their escape and hide out in Italy or crossed the borders into Switzerland or France. Many more headed for Rome and became part of the Rome Escape Line story. Monsignor Hugh began finding safe refuge throughout the city for the increasing number of escapees arriving in Rome, but he was finding it hard to persuade those in hiding to take appropriate security precautions. Getting bored in the safe houses, they were starting to venture out onto the streets of Rome at night, unfortunately resulting in several recaptures by the Gestapo and putting the lives of those helping them at risk.

By late Autumn, Allied escapee Lt Col Sam Derry had escaped from a POW train on route through Italy to Germany. Initially he hid in the Italian countryside with some other escapees but they were soon going to be requiring more secure shelter and support for the approaching harsh Italian winter. Being the senior officer, hidden under cabbages in a friendly farmer’s wagon he travelled to Rome to seek help. He approached Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty on the steps of St Peters and was immediately provided with safe accommodation in Msgr Hugh’s College residence. Recognising the strong leadership qualities in Lt Col Sam Derry, Monsignor Hugh asked the British Ambassador to the Holy See, Sir Darcy Osborne, if he could retain the services of the Lt Col to help him with controlling the escapees he had in hiding. His request was granted and within days, from the safety of the Msgr’s rooms in the German College, both men had reorganised the work being done by the “Council of Three” and so began the Rome Escape Line, applying military like discipline to those in hiding and all but eliminating recaptures. On October 18th, the Gestapo began rounding up Jews for deportation and before a major rescue operation got into gear, some 1000 Jews were arrested and shipped out - the majority to their deaths. Right across Rome and the surrounding countryside, individuals and organisations including the Vatican/Catholic Church and the Rome Escape Line actively protected their fellow citizens and some 7000 Roman Jews were hidden successfully.

Call Of The Wild¹ To Form Part Of Global Social Media Campaign

Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin today announced Call of the Wild¹, a joint initiative between the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland. The new initiative aims to give local people on the Wild Atlantic Way the opportunity to have their hidden gems included in a global social media campaign, while at the same time highlight to their own social network the beauty of the locality as a holiday destination. Over the coming weeks, locals from along the Wild Atlantic Way will be called on to share photos and videos that showcase the beauty of the West Coast on social media using the hashtag #MyWildAtlanticWay. The best photos and videos will be shared by Tourism Ireland on its social platforms with millions of potential holidaymakers around the world (Tourism Ireland has around 4.3 million Facebook fans worldwide, almost 500,000 followers on Twitter and 425,000 followers on Instagram). Many Kerry Families Are Missing Out On €1,500 Home Carer Credit - Brassil - Tax relief of up to €1,500 per year for qualifying couples -

Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry, John Brassil has said that hundreds, if not thousands of, Kerry families may be missing out on tax relief of up to €1,500 per year because they are not aware of the Home Carer Tax Credit. The Home Carer Tax Credit is designed to help families where one parent works in the home to care for one or more children or a dependent person. “As part of our negotiations with Fine Gael on Budget 2019, Fianna Fáil sought and secured a €300 increase in the Home Carer Tax Credit. However, it seems to me that many people are not aware of this tax credit and may be missing out. “All too often people miss out on tax relief that are entitled to. The Government and the Revenue Commissioners must do better at highlight reliefs that are available to different citizens. “According to the Central Statistics Office, there are currently 146,698 family units where one parent is staying at home to care for children. The figure is likely to be higher than this when one factors in those who are caring for a dependent person. “Details published last week from the Department of Finance show that only 85,900 families claim the Home Carer Tax Credit. It is very likely that there are hundreds if not thousands of Kerry families not benefitting from this credit because they are not aware of it. More now needs to be done to increase the uptake of this credit. “The Home Care Tax Credit is vital support for working Kerry families and we need to do all we can to make sure all those who qualify actually avail of it”, concluded Brassil.

have the chance to win a 2-night getaway along the Wild Atlantic Way. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, commented on the Call of the Wild¹ initiative: “This is the first of a number of regional tourism initiatives made possible due to the increased funding in tourism. From stunning landscapes to exquisite food, there are many hidden gems along the Wild Atlantic Way known to locals, but undiscovered by the rest of the world. We are asking local people along the Wild Atlantic Way to share their own hidden gems¹ with the world and help spread the word about the beauty of the West Coast by sharing their own photos or videos on social media using the hashtag #MyWildAtlanticWay.” Share your Wild Atlantic Way hidden gems using the hashtag #MyWildAtlanticWay before the 31st October for your chance to have your photos and videos be part of a global promotional campaign.

Customers Are The Heartbeat Of Killarney Credit Union

Rugby

Killarney U16s in action against Tralee/Listowel on Sunday.

Killarney Rugby Girls Teams who travelled to Clonakilty Last Week.

Credit unions have been voted Number One for Customer Experience in the 2018 CXi Ireland Customer Experience Report, taking the award for the fourth year running. This is the first time, anywhere in the world, that the same organisation has taken the award for four consecutive years. Killarney Credit Union joins 250 other credit unions across the Republic of Ireland in celebrating this outstanding achievement. According to Mark Murphy, CEO from Killarney Credit Union “We are delighted to receive this award for the fourth consecutive year. It marks the total commitment which our credit union personnel have to serving the needs of our members. Our members understand that all decisions are taken at local level, by people who will take time to understand their needs”. Credit unions were singled out within the report for the powerful bond forged with members - and the fact that the relationship with members was built completely on trust. Michael Killeen, Chairman of the CX Company said the remarkable success of credit unions was down to the fact that they put their members at the centre of everything they do. The 2018 report highlighted the very significant gap which exists between people’s views of the customer experience offered by credit unions compared to the banks. Indeed, the leading bank within the survey was in a lowly 79th position. Mark from Killarney Credit Union noted that despite the repeated success of credit unions within these awards, the credit union was not resting on its laurels. “From our interactions with our members, it is clear that they want even more services from the credit union. With more and more of our members choosing to interact with us online, we are working hard to ensure that our excellent member experience also comes through via our online offerings.”

Garden Magic It has been brought to my attention that Christmas is only around the corner! I am an in the moment type of person, and am happy to live day by day, but as a gardener there is a certain amount of planning involved… I was reminded of the fact that Christmas is just two months away by some hyacinth vases which rolled out of the press when I was looking for a piece of twine the other day. It is time to plant bulbs for Christmas NOW! Forcing hyacinths, crocus, amaryllis and paperwhite daffodils is something which is incredibly easy, but requires precision timing. It is well worth the effort, for a beautiful display during the festive season. Everyone loves fresh flowers in the house during this time, but they can be very costly. A bowl of beautifully scented, brightly coloured blooms grown at home need only cost a few euro. How to go about it? Different bulbs require slightly different treatments, but when buying hyacinth bulbs make sure they are labelled ‘prepared’. Bulbs such as grape hyacinth, (muscari), crocus, mini daffs, Paper White narcissi and hyacinths can all be used. Hippeastrum or amaryllis is generally planted individually, due to it’s size. Partly fill a container of your choice with bulb or multipurpose compost, making sure it is well watered. Plant the bulbs close together, but not touching either each

It’s Time To Plant Bulbs For Christmas

other or the sides of the bowl, with their tops peeking above the compost. Hyacinths, grape hyacinths and crocus need a cool period, during which time they establish a strong root system and leaves. For the cool and dark stage a frost proof garage, utility or shed can be used. After planting the bulbs place the whole container into a black polythene bag. This will keep out light, and keep moisture in. Check regularly to make sure they do not dry out. Hyacinths need 8-10 weeks of cool temperature, then 18-22 days of room

temperature, depending on variety. Once leaves are strong, the pots can be placed in a bright sunny position, to induce flowering. Narcissus ‘Paper White’ are planted as above, but can be left on a warm windowsill to grow. They can become lanky, so have something with which to stake them at the ready. They need about 6-10 weeks to be ready for Christmas. Amaryllis takes about 10 weeks. Any bowls can be used, even decorative teacups and jars. A group of Christmas themed cups with tete-atete daffs on a tray can look stunning. A row of old tealight holders, in which you have planted blue grape hyacinths, when placed in a row down the centre of a table can be simple yet so effective. Covering the top of the container with moss, or decorative stones will enhance the appearance of the flowers, and what I often do is keep a gap when planting, (by placing an empty plastic pot in the bowl), which I then fill with floral foam into which I can arrange some greenery, holly berries or Christmas decorations. These are also great gifts, as you really can decorate them to make them look very festive!

Sign The Petition & We’ll Make e-LEGEND

Peugeot’s outspoken CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, has taken to Twitter in response to an online petition that has almost 9000 signatures calling for the French car-maker to push its stunning e-LEGEND coupe concept into production. Responding to the public outcry that saw 4000 social media users sign the petition in less than four hours, Imparato remarked that if the change. org petition got 500,000 signatures “we really might have to consider it…” During a round-table discussion with journalists, just moments after the e-LEGEND was revealed at the Paris motor show, the Peugeot boss fueled rumours that momentum is building for the retro-designed coupe to be pushed into production. Anyone hoping for a retro design that pays homage to the old Defender is out of luck… In what appears to be a carefully staged quasi-reveal, the design of the new Land Rover Defender – a model that’s been touted and talked about for a decade now – has been revealed via the first ‘spy shots’ published this week. Now the first images of a camouflaged prototype wearing the hashtag #BEST4X4XFAR, show it will sport an exceedingly boxy design like its predecessor, which can trace its lineage back to the 1948 Land Rover Series I. But any hopes for a retro-inspired, hard-core off-road aesthetic appear to have been dashed. The tall, narrow silhouette of the original Defender has been replaced by a family-friendly design that’s wider and lower as the brand seeks to expand the vehicle’s reach beyond hard-core adventurers and off-road buyers. There are classic Defender design cues like a square-edged clamshell bonnet, visually closer to the Land Rover Discovery and its second cousins, the Range Rover Sport and Velar, rather than its predecessor — but this is a calculated gamble.

Mitsubishi Could Return To WRC In 2021

Toyota’s success may entice Japanese rivals to return to the World Rally Championship. Now that Toyota is back as the pacesetter in the World Rally Championship, fellow Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi is said to be “well advanced” on a return to the WRC. Mitsubishi could re-enter the championship in 2021 with its Mirage. Toyota is leading the manufacturer standings in this year’s WRC and its Estonian ace Ott Tanak is a contender for the drivers’ title with just the Spanish round at the end of this month and then Rally Australia at Coffs Harbour in mid-November to go. Toyota Motor Corporation president Akio Toyoda has said that he wants to see both Mitsubishi and Subaru back in the WRC.

Meghan Is Pregnant! News Flash

Celeb NEWS Mischa Barton Shares Pic From The Hills Reboot

Harry & Meghan announce they are expecting their first child Five months after getting married (they broke the news to the Royal Family at Eugenie’s wedding). The happy news came hours after the couple were seen beaming as they touched down in Sydney for their first major international tour since their wedding in May. Announcing their pregnancy Kensington Palace said on Monday: ‘Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019. Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public’. Pregnancy rumours went into overdrive today as Meghan got off the plane in Australia and was seen holding her stomach - and later covered her midriff with a folder. On Friday she also wore a suspiciously wide-fitting Givenchy coat to Princess Eugenie’s royal wedding in Windsor with husband Harry seen repeatedly rubbing her lower back. Last month her mother Doria Ragland was also seen taking baby-care classes in Pasadena, California. Royal sources have said Doria may move to London from the US to help her look after the baby because Meghan does not want to hire a nanny. When the child arrives next Spring it will be the Queen’s eighth great-grandchild.

It’s OVER! Mischa Barton is giving fans a glimpse into the new season of The Hills. The OC star will be in the highly anticipated new season, with stars like Stephanie Pratt, Audrina Patridge, Brody Jenner, Whitney Port and Heidi and Spencer Pratt already confirmed. On Instagram Mischa shared a selfie with Stephanie and Audrina, she added the perfect Mean Girls related caption: “On wednesdays we wear whatever we want… and you can totally sit with us.” Although some of our favourite stars are back, lead cast member Lauren Conrad won’t be coming back, and Kristen Cavallari has also ruled herself out. Withstanding this though we can expect lots of drama, tears and fights LA style.

Holly Willoughby’s This Morning Stand-In Is Confirmed Rochelle Humes has been confirmed to be replacing Holly Willoughby as a stand-in host on This Morning, while Holly joins Declan Donnelly in Australia next month for I’m A Celebrity’s new series where she’ll stand in for Ant McPartlin.

Ariana Grande & Pete Davidson call off whirlwind engagement after five months

dson Pete Davi & Ariana

Mac Miller & Ariana Granda

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson have called off their five-month romance, according to TMZ. They got engaged after just four weeks. Both parties have acknowledged it simply ‘wasn’t the right time for them’, amid claims the shock death of her ex, Mac Miller on September 7, from an ‘overdose,’ was a ‘breaking point’ for the couple. Although the pair are said to still have “love for each other” they are no longer an item. The singer had taken to Twitter asking for “just one” day to heal. The couple were only spotted together in public last

week. And friends close to the pair are holding out hope for a future relationship again. Pete Davidson has deleted his social media. The SNL star had only returned to social media two weeks ago, after deleting his pages due to the insane pressure on his relationship with the singer. Pete returned to Instagram at the start of the month, and posted a blurry snap of himself. “The internet is an evil place and it doesn’t make me feel good,” he said at the time. “Why should I spend any time on negative energy when my real life is f***ing lit.

In loving memory of Sylvester (Sylvie) Bartlett 46 O’Kelly’s Villas, Killarney 24th October 2012. Don’t think of him as gone away, His journey’s just begun, Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one.

Think how he must be wishing, That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of him as living, In the hearts of those he touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, And he was loved so much. No matter how life changes, No matter what we do, A special place within our hearts, Is always kept for you. Rest In Peace. Loved and missed by his wife Mary, his sons Sylvester and Joe, his daughters Noreen, Mary T, Eileen, his daughters in law, son in law and 13 grandchildren. Fondest memories, every day, of the dearest mother Cathy Guerin Wife of the late Cornelius Guerin, Late of “Irish Cottage”, Muckross Road, Killarney, Who sadly left us on 21/10/2005. “For Mam” “Surprised By Joy”

Just think of him as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Where there are no days and years.

13TH, 29TH & 4TH ANNIVERSARY

“Surprised by Joy, impatient as the wind, I turned to share the transport , Oh,with whom but thee, Deep buried in the silent tomb, That spot, which no vicissitude can find, Love ,faithful love, Recalled thee to my mind, But how can I forget thee, Through what power, even for the least division of an hour, Have I been so beguiled, As to be blind to my most grievous loss, That thoughts return, Was the worst pang ,That sorrow ever bore, Save One, One only, When I stood forlorn, Knowing my hearts best treasure was no more, That neither present time ,nor years unborn, Could to my sight, That heavenly face restore”

We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again. So rest in peace dear Mum, Dad and brother Con, And thanks for all you’ve done, We pray that God has given you, The crown you’ve truly won. Fondly remembered always by Margaret & Peter and all the Guerin family and friends.

Dr Crokes are safely through to the county final after a searching test from Kerin’s O Rahillys while East Kerry must do it all once more on Sunday next in Tralee. They seemed to have enough done leading by a point in the closing stages but Dingle stuck to the task and Tom O Sullivan earned the replay date with that all important equalising point. Dingle missed the influence of Aussies Rules star Mark O Connor. He was very influential in the game versus Stacks but his club in Australia stepped in to prevent him playing for Dingle during his time at home. Goals win matches and two green flags late in the game from substitute Jordan Kiely made victory possible for Dr Crokes. They added an insurance point in the 8 minutes of added on time. There was a very competitive edge to this game which Crokes won 2-19 to 2-10 .Referee Brendan Griffin did well overall and issued cards of all colours where they were due. There were some hold ups but he handled them well. In the East Kerry game there were several melees and alot of it was frustration by the players with referee Sean Joy kept busy sorting out some fisticuffs. I felt he was inconsistent and missed several fouls which went unpunished. This led to some players taking the law into their own hands ending in several melees. I lost count of the number of stoppages.

Dr Crokes 2-19 | Kerins O Rahilly’s 2-10

East Kerry 2-10 | Dingle 1-13

Kerins O ‘Rahillys got a smashing goal from the throw-in and added a point from the kick-out and they had the best performer of the two teams in David Moran yet Crokes are a gritty side and they settled down to be level at half-time 0-11 to 2-5. Two late goals in the second half by Jordan Kiely copperfastened victory. The Tralee side will wonder how they lost this game by such a margin but Crokes’ courage and experience have seen them through so many games especially in recent years and they had that in abundance in this semi-final. They await the outcome of the other semifinal replay. Although Moran was magnificent Johnny Buckley and Daithi Casey did very well in the overall contest for supremacy at midfield. Tommy Walsh proved a real handful in the earlier game which the Tralee side won but this time out Mike Moloney upped his game considerably and all Walsh scored was a single point in the second minute and he was forced to go outfield in search of richer pastures. The man who did most damage to Crokes was Gavin O Brien who scored 2-1. He has tremendous pace and showed that from the throw-in when he ran all of 60 yards through the Crokes defence. No one got near him as he careered for goal and beat Shane Murphy all ends up. He added an other goal in the 24th minute. No doubt Peter Keane will be looking at him for a possible place in the new Kerry panel. Kieran O Leary was magnificent for Crokes bagging 5 points all from play. Tony Brosnan scored 6 points but two of these were from frees. The game was level at half time with 11 points for Crokes and 2-5 for O Rahillys. The game continued on an even keel until the 45th minute when Jack Savage was sent off. The inspired substitution of Jordan Kiely for Gavin O Shea reaped rich dividends. Crokes exerted great pressure and Kiely pounced on a poor short kick out by Garry Kissane to notch a real poacher’s goal. HE also scored a second goal with help from Kieran O Leary, a wonderful contribution for the short time he was on the field. I was also impressed with the play of David Shaw who scored 2 first half points and then was surprisingly called ashore at half time making way for Gooch. Shane Murphy got a nasty injury late in the game when he over reached for a high ball. Johnny O Leary came on for him. Let us hope that Murphy will be recovered in time for the final.

East Kerry can thank David Clifford in particular for dragging them back in to this game when it seemed as if Dingle would prevail. He overcame the disappointment of shooting a penalty wide in the 18th minute to return and shoot 2 goals and 2 points for East Kerry. It says a lot for his competitive temperament and is the sign of a great player to overcome disappointment and missed opportunities only to grit the teeth and come back all the stronger to add scores. Playing with the wind in the first half Dingle were the better side. Barra O Sullivan, Tom O Sullivan and the two Geaneys Paul and Micheal caught the eye for me in the Dingle team. At half – time Dingle led by 8 points to 4 and they deserved that lead. A player from each club was sent off for separate offences just coming up to half time. They led for most of the game but East Kerry deserved at least a draw so justice was done. It was great to see Liam Kearney coming on early in the second half and he acquitted himself very well. The East Kerry defence is improving , but they did concede a goal in the 45th minute after good work by Paul Geaney for Tom O Sullivan. Top scorer for Dingle was Paul Geaney on 6 points, 4 from frees. Kevin McCarthy had to go off in the 46th minute with a suspected serious shoulder injury. He probably won’t be recovered for Kilcummin’s big day in a few week’s time when they play in the Munster Intermediate Club Championship away to the Clare champions. East Kerry have better options among the subs which they can use to good effect depending how the game is going so I still stick by them to book a place in the final versus Dr Crokes. They need to get the ball in fast and high to their scoring forwards.

Lewis Hamilton Can Claim Fifth Title In US GP

Lewis Hamilton can wrap up his fifth Formula 1 title in this weekend’s United States Grand Prix, and there are several ways he can do it. The Mercedes driver holds a 67-point lead over Sebastian Vettel, an advantage he must extend by eight points at Austin to become only the third F1 driver in history to win five world championships. Hamilton is on a four-race victory streak now and a fifth win in a row would mean Vettel must finish second to stay in mathematical contention. However, Hamilton can finish as low as sixth on Sunday and still be champion. Hamilton will be champion in the US if... Hamilton wins and Vettel is third or lower

Hamilton finishes second and Vettel is fifth or lower Hamilton finishes third and Vettel is seventh or lower Hamilton finishes fourth and Vettel is eighth or lower Hamilton finishes fifth and Vettel is ninth or lower Hamilton finishes sixth and Vettel fails to score Barring an incredible twist, Hamilton will join Michael Schumacher and Juan Manuel Fangio on the list of five-time champions. Schumacher went on to win two more titles, which Hamilton could match given he has extended his Mercedes deal to include the 2019 and ‘20 seasons.

Lakers Loose Controversial Away Game IT Carlow 93 | Scotts Lakers St Paul’s 85

V

A poor second quarter performance contributed largely to Scotts Lakers losing out to IT Carlow on Saturday afternoon. Falling 20 points behind, the Killarney side did bounce back well in the second half to narrow the gap to three points but the home side held on to secure the victory. After being on the road at 7.00 a.m for a 12.30 tip-off in Carlow, Scotts Lakers started well leading 10-6 midway through the first quarter. Papito Hersisia kept the visitors in front with a big three-pointer and Lakers led 25-21 with 1:36 left in the first quarter. However Carlow finished stronger with American Johnny McCarthy sinking a late three-pointer and the home side led 26-25 at the end of the first period. It was in the second quarter where Carlow completely overpowered the Killarney side outscoring them 30-11. Dylan Phelan pushed the home side 35-26 in front after two minutes. Baskets from Dailian Mason and Shane McCarthy left Scotts Lakers trailing 43-31 midway through the second quarter. However with Carlow’s Johnny McCarthy dominating and scoring with ease, the home side led 53-33 with two minutes left and were 56-36 in front at half-time. Carlow led 58-41 early in the third quarter but Scotts Lakers kept battling away with Hersisia,

Mason and McCarthy chipping in with baskets and they managed to reduce the deficit to 7155 with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter. The home side maintained their advantage to lead 71-64 as the game entered the final quarter. The gap was narrowed to three points, 77-74, with seven minutes remaining. Carlow’s Johnny McCarthy kept his side in front leading 82-74 midway through the quarter. A big score from Hersisia brought the Lakers back to trail 88-85 with 2:18 remaining. However this was followed by a very controversial incident with a melee breaking out on the court. The match officials took action by ejecting four Carlow players from the court for their roles in the incident while just one Scotts Lakers player, Papito Hersisia, was disqualified. When play was eventually restored, Carlow kept their composure with Johnny McCarthy pushing them 90-85 ahead with 1:23 remaining and they held on to win by eight points in the end. It was a match that Scotts Lakers could and should have won. The second quarter collapse was the crucial factor but 16 turnovers and nine missed free throws was also costly. Scotts Lakers managed to score 16 from 39 two-pointer field goals while they converted 13 from 37 three-pointer attempts.

Teams IT Carlow: Johnny McCarthy 26, Brian Hogan 14, Armands Vaikuls 14, Dylan Phelan 12. Scotts Lakers St Paul’s: Dailian Mason 22, Papito Hersisia 21, Sean O’Brien 11, Shane McCarthy 10, Mark Greene 9, Andrew Fitzgerald 8, Seamus Brosnan 2, Justin Tuason 2.

Rugby News ... Big Win For Killarney Rugby F.C. U16s Killarney RFC 27, Tralee/Listowel 7 Killarney started with precision and within 5 mins James kennelly ran over the whitewash to finish off a try that went through the hands of no less than 8 players. Killarney also had to defend exceptionally well against a strong Tralee/ Listowel forward division that had a lot of strength and ran direct testing lines. However Killarney broke through again with the tigerish Dan Twomey finishing off for their second try of the day. Before half time a similar pattern resulted with Cormac Rowe scoring his debut u16 try. Outhalf Donnchadh Grealy converted. Tralee resumed the second half very powerfully and scored under the Killarney posts for a seven pointer. A crucial penalty from the Killarney outhalf put light between the teams and Killarney finished the more dominant team. Following probing attacks from the likes of Peter Walsh, John McCarthy and Padraic Talbot. Liam Randles scorched over in the corner for a converted try that sealed the victory. The controlled attacking and defensive tackling of the players was something that particularly pleased the Killarney coaching team. Lining out on the day were: Rob Nealon, Brendie O’ Donoghue, Cormac Rowe, John McCarthy, Bailey O’Sullivan, Shane McAllister, Padraic Talbot, Peter Walsh (c), Donnchadh Grealy, Liam Randles, Mikey Moriarty, Dan Twomey and James Kenneally.

U14 Rugby Killarney V Corca Dhuibhne:

Rugby Words: Liam Murphy Last Saturday the Heineken Cup kicked off for the new season with three of the Irish provinces in action. First up defending champions Leinster hosted London Wasps at a sold out RDS. They absolutely set down a marker for the rest of the teams in the championship with a 52 – 3 drubbing of the English side and former Heineken Cup winners. Leinster were on fire earning the bonus point early on and will travel to Toulouse this Sunday for what should be a sterner opposition in the next round. Meanwhile Ulster beat Leicester Tigers at the Kingspan 24 – 10 to improve their poor run of form of late. Munster travelled to Sandy Park to take on the English Premiership leaders and went into the match as underdogs, missing the likes of Conor Murray. Exeter at home is a tough place to go. Munster was beaten in a preseason friendly with Exeter, so there was always something to prove. The result – a 10 – 10 draw would normally sound like a poor match but it was a decent scrap and Munster will feel happy with the two points. Exeter will feel they left the game behind them. CJ Stander scored the try for Munster while Duncan Williams had a great display, silencing some of his many detractors into the bargain. Next weekend Munster face Gloucester at Thomond Park, in what should be a cracker. Tickets are still on sale online so grab a few if you can, always a great day out! Closer to home our Seniors host Ennis in the next round of the Munster Junior league at Aghadoe and all are invited to come along and enjoy some cracking rugby. Kick off is 2:30pm this Sunday. Conor Murray Remains Injured for Munster and Ireland.

Words: Ian Harrington

Last Sunday in glorious conditions in front of the stunning backdrop of the dingle peninsula and an enthusiastic and warm local support, Killarney RFC U14s secured a dramatic last-gasp win with a final score of 31 – 30 in a highly entertaining game played in a great spirit by both sides. Both teams displayed good ball handling and running skills with flowing rugby and plenty of scores. It was Corca Dhuibhne who scored first with a try after 10 mins and Killarney had to defend staunchly against a well-coached and organised side. Killareny’s outhalf Piarce Slattery scored some pivotal tries; he was aided by great vision from scrumhalf Donal Hickey along with individual running from Stephen Dalton and Josh Coffey to keep the pressure on the Corca Dhuibhne defence.

Ultimately, the high success rate of Finn Kennelly’s kicks at the goal to convert Killarney’s tries proved the difference between the sides in the end. Excellent defensive performances with great tackling from Cathan Harrington, Daire O’Brien, Gearóid Sugrue and Gavin Walsh kept Killarney in the match. With time almost up, the score was 25-30 in Corca Dhuibhne’s favour, when a breakaway involving Donal Hickey, Cathan Harrington and ultimately Piarce Slattery resulted in a try under the posts from 50 meters. With the clock in red, Finn Kennelly stepped up to slot the conversion against the wind to secure the victory in the last action of the game. Special mention must go to the warm and sporting welcome we received as always from an impressive Corca Dhuibhne side.

Killarney Toastmasters Club

Our last meeting which took place on Tuesday, 9th October, was yet again another vibrant and friendly club meeting. The main course of the night included two speeches – The first speech entitled ‘best and worst moments in Toastmasters’ was delivered by Derry. The panel discussion

facilitated by Dermot was a new experience for most members. Panellists shared their varying viewpoints on Rural Ireland and the ‘brain drain issue – the atmosphere was electric with plenty of questions from the floor to conclude. NEXT MEETING: The next club meeting will take place on Tuesday, 22nd October. The club welcomes guests and new members alike. Don’t delay! Become the speaker and leader you want to be. Confident, charismatic leaders weren’t born that way. As you progress in Toastmasters, you’ll get to practice your skills by organising and conducting meetings and motivating others to help you. Become a better negotiator. Gain trust. Inspire your team.

Killarney Musical Society

This was a very exciting week for KMS as we officially begun our trek over the Austrian mountains to the beautiful Sound of Music. Rehearsals have finally begun. Thursday night saw our first rehearsal and what a great rehearsal it was. The children got proceedings underway at 6pm and all I can say is WOW, such enthusiasm and talent ... they were wonderful. Then it was on to the female chorus, welcome to one and all, our wonderful ladies, a saintly crew sounding suitably angelic to make any nuns chorus proud. It’s great to finally get started and we’ll keep you all up to date here with our weekly news. If you want to find out more check out our website www.killarneymusicalsociety.ie. Dr Crokes

SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHP SEMI FINAL: Played in Austin Stack Park. Dr Crokes 2-19 Kerins O’Rahillys 2-10. This game was level with five minutes to go plus injury time and looked destined to go to a replay. The injury time ran to eight minutes ad it was during this remainin five minutes plus injury time that we got the upper hand. We scored 2-3 to Kerins O’Rahillys 0-1 in this period for a nine point victory. There was no way that we deserve to win by this amount but it came about because our bench was strong and one of our substitutes scored two goals. Our opponents got off to a great start and had an early goal and a point without reply. We sent over five unanswered points to get on level terms by the end of the first quarter. We continued to kick points in the second quarter, six to add to our first quarter tally of five. O’Rahillys matched our second quarter score with 1-3 to leave the teams level at half time 2-5 to 0-11. Our opponents were without their full complement of player for larger than us and we scored 1-2 to Kerins O’Rahillys 0-1 in injury time and scored our place in the Final.

Legion GAA

A SAD WEEK: This past week started on a high note for the club as the u16’s captured the East Kerry Div.2 title in style against Firies under lights

in Spa .In his eloquent acceptance speech captain Dion O Neill sent best wishes to absent team mate Niall McGillicuddy on behalf of the panel. Niall himself was many times the star performer for that very u16 side and it was a testament as to just how popular he was that his fellow clubmates remember him on such an occasion. As is the norm after winning any trophy there is a feel-good factor and it lifts the moral of one and all. So when the devastating news came later in the week that Niall had lost his battle with illness it had a enormous effect on all of us. Having recently been given some positive news it was everybody’s hope and wish that before long Niall would be back home in the comfort and embrace of his family and in time starring on the playing fields once again. Tragically it was not to be and we have lost one of our brightest and best. Niall’s prowess as an exceptional footballer and all round sportsman were well known by one and all, but the fact was that he was also hugely popular, well-mannered and likeable. After our Saturday morning Academy session for u10’s is over there is usually a mad dash for refreshments just as one would expect from children of that age however it is recalled that when Niall was that age he would remain on the field helping to collect training bollards and other gear. Knowing his parents Sheila and Daithí it was easy to see why. As new Kerry Manager Peter Keane gave his first big press briefing in a testament to the man himself Peter pointed out the tragic loss of one so young and talented and how it put everything into perspective, a thought that all of us agree with. It is impossible to find words that would lessen the pain of loss for Sheila, Daithí, Ellen and Jane, all we can do is say that we were privileged to have Niall as a member of our club and hold him as an example to others. The Killarney Legion Club extends its deepest sympathy to Sheila, Daithí, Ellen, Jane and Family on their tragic loss. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a Anam dílis, leaba i measc na Naomh. LOTTO: Winning no’s - 6,9.13,19. One winner of jackpot €14,400,Angela O Connor, 6 Muckross Grove. Next week’s jackpot €3,000.Play online at www.legiongaa.com
