Go up a hill for Kerry families

from Accommodation and The Black Horses from Reception with The Titans crossing the finish line first.

A local nurse is calling for people to go up a hill to raise funds for 11 families in Kerry who have children with severe to profound medical needs.

The Gleneagle's Inter-Department Activities Day made a welcome return and it brought fun and cheer to the hotel's staff.

This includes children who may have a brain injury, cerebral palsy, a genetic diagnosis or other undiagnosed condiAnothertion.

Eilis Loughrey, Director of People and Culture for The Gleneagle Group, presented the perpetual cup to the Titans team captain Vlad Popusoi, while each team member was presented with a special commemorative medal.

RACE: Staff taking part in the flour relay race at The Gleneagle’s Inter-Department Activities Day.

Siobhan Reen is the Jack and Jill Liaison Nurse Manager for Kerry. The national charity – now in its 25th year – provides specialist in-home nursing care and respite support for children with severe to profound neurodevelopmental delay, up to the age of six.

Every day can be an uphill challenge for Jack and Jill families and, this October, the charity is urging people to climb or walk a local hill in solidarity with the 11 Kerry families currently under its care as part of the eighth annual Up the Hill for Jack and Jill fundraising challenge.

Nine teams from departments throughout the hotel gathered in the INEC to compete in a series of fun challenges including stilt walking, hula hooping, flour relay races, uniform relay races, hanging tough, backs against the wall, and the old favourite egg and spoon race. This was the first activities day since 2019 and a fitting end to the busy summer Theseason.final was a hotly contested backward stilts race between The Titans

With Jack and Jill, there is no means test, no waiting list and no unnecessary red tape. The core nursing team devises a home nursing care plan that is tailored around the child and the family’s needs, with the charity funding and providing up to 80 hours’ support each month.

“It’s a privilege to be a part of the lives of Jack and Jill families," Siobhan said. "These are ordinary parents facing the extraordinary care needs of a child with a complex medical condition; a child who may not be able to walk or talk, who may be tube-fed or oxygen-dependent, requiring intensive, aroundthe-clock care, at home. But everyone needs a break, and that’s where we come in, literally, into the home, to give them relief and we are very proud to walk this care journey with them."

WINNERS: The Accommodation team who won at The Gleneagle's Inter-Department Activities Day.

for Kerry in the future. Others would be county stars if they lived elsewhere on these shores. Their two top scorers – David Clifford and Darragh Roche - weren’t even playing the last day. Embarrassment of riches doesn’t even cover it. With all that in mind, you’d have to conclude that Spa will, in all likelihood, find the going tough in the Park on Saturday Elsewhereevening. in Group 2, Dingle will be looking to secure safe passage to the last eight when they take on Rahillys on Sunday. With Jack Savage and Tommy Walsh both unavailable to last year’s beaten finalists, Dingle will fancy their Drchances.Crokes and Kenmare Shamrocks lead the way in Group 1 and they can take major steps towards the knockout phase if they can beat Shannon Rangers and St Kieran’s respectively. Kenmare v Kieran’s could be one to keep a close eye on.

They found the going tough last weekend against Dingle - the West Kerry side are old hands when it comes to the County Championship - and their opponents on Saturday are stacked to the extent that it’s almost impossible to see them being beaten by anyone.

v Spa

The only constant in life is change. It’s not too long ago that Spa players formed the backbone of the East Kerry squad; over a dozen of them helped their district side to county titles in 2019 and 2020.

Group 4 is unique in that it is still wide open after the first round of matches. Following the draw between Templenoe and South Kerry, Feale Rangers currently lead the way. They take on the southerners in Round 2, with Templenoe travelling north to face St Brendan’s in Ardfert.

All that came to an abrupt end when the Killarney club earned promotion to senior level in 2021. Evan Cronin, Mike Foley, Shane Cronin and co. used to contribute to East Kerry’s demolition jobs. On Saturday, there’s a real danger that they could be on the receiving end.

be only natural if their heartbreaking extra-time defeat to Rahilllys in the Club Championship semi-final dented their confidence somewhat.

KERRY SFC: GROUP 2

Defending champions Austin Stacks and 2020 finalists Mid Kerry share pole position in Group 3 after the first round of fixtures. Stacks face West Kerry next and they will be well and truly devastated by the news that star midfielder Joe O’Connor seriously damaged his ACL in their Round 1 win over Na Gaeil. O’Connor, the Kerry captain in 2022, will miss the rest of the season and probably next year’s intercounty campaign. The athletic 23-year-old is integral to Stacks and the way they play – you would fear that his absence could be fatal to their chances of retaining their title.

A quick skim of last Saturday’s match programme would be enough to give opposing managers palpitations. Legion quintet Brian Kelly, Cian Gammell, Darragh Lyne, Jonathan Lyne and James O’Donoghue – all intercounty calibre players – slotted in alongside other intercounty calibre players like Pa Warren, Jack Sherwood, Paul Murphy, Ronan Buckley, Paudie Clifford and Shane Ryan. That’s before we mention the other starters, some of whom may well play

After a disappointing Club Championship, Austin Stacks started their Kerry SFC off on the right foot by defeating Tralee rivals Na Gaeil by three. Unfortunately, the serious injury sustained by Joe O’Connor rather overshadowed the result. Elsewhere in Group 3, Mid Kerry had a fine comeback victory over West Kerry.

The 2022 Kerry Senior Football Championship got underway last weekend with a full round of group phase fixtures taking place across the county.

In the other game in Group 1, five points from play by Stephen O’Brien helped Kenmare Shamrocks to a fourpoint win over Shannon Rangers.

Dr Crokes got their championship off to a solid start by defeating St Kieran’s with six points to spare. Youngster Cian McMahon and veteran Kieran O’Leary bagged the all-important goals in Milltown.

In Group 4, South Kerry earned a draw against Club Championship finalists Templenoe thanks to an injury-time point by Dylan O’Donoghue. Feale Rangers just about held on for victory against St Brendan’s in the other fixture: Martin Stack of Moyvane kicked a whopping 11 points for the district team from North Kerry.

Pre-tournament favourites East Kerry were dominant against Kerins O’Rahillys in Austin Stack Park with Listry youngster Ruairí Murphy in particular catching the eye. The Kerry U20 star kicked 1-5 including a spectacular point that came as a direct result of a delightful dummy solo.

As soon as I started playing I knew I had a special talent, a talent that not a lot of other kids had.”

“Billy always said to me, ‘your work-rate comes first’. He’s a coach who always told me the truth. When I played badly, he would tell me I played badly. Rumours about Okwute’s future swirled over the course of the past season, a season during which he scored 19 goals in 19 games for the Kerry U19s. He and the people around him knew it was only a matter of time.

One of those players is Billy Dennehy, a Tralee native who joined Mick McCarthy’s Sunderland in 2005. After enjoying a successful playing career with teams like Shamrock Rovers and Cork City in the League of Ireland, Dennehy has now returned to the Kingdom to coach the Kerry U19s. As the Irish-born son of a South African mother and a Nigerian father, Okwute has options when it comes to the prospect of international football. But he says the decision – if things go well at club level and he winds up needing to make one – will be straightforward.

“I don’t think it’s stressful. I knew I was going to come into this world, I knew I was going to play in England. There’s no fear. There’s no pressure.”

TARGETS

Okwute says he is 100% focussed on making his spell at Edgeley Park as fruitful as possible but he has no qualms about revealing his long-term targets. When asked where he sees himself in five years’ time, that brilliant confidence shines through once again.

“I see myself playing in the Prem to be honest. I know it’s going to be tough but I see myself there. I hope that’s where I am. I think it’s achievable.”

“At the minute I’m just loving it here.” Moving away to a new country and starting a new job can be a stressful process. It would be understandable if Okwute was feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment, but that’s not how he’s looking at it.

“I was born and bred in Ireland. Ireland is all I know. Down the line that’s one thing I really want to achieve as well, to play for my country. I can look up to guys like Chiedozie Ogbene and Michael Obafemi, black lads who maybe have similar backgrounds to me and are playing for Ireland.

“That gives me motivation and hope that I can do the same. If they can do it, I can do it too.”

Rising Killarney cycling star Sam Bolger spent much of the summer on the pro-cycling scene in Belgium.

Races are run over much narrower roads than Irish events. It took a bit of getting used to as any rider trapped in the bunch would find it very hard to get back to the front of the pack.

“A Kermesse is a short circuit through a town or village which must include a pub and a church,” he added.

“Irish races are run on main roads. Any trouble and you just go over to the wrong side of the road and power your way back to the front. There is no wrong side in Belgium, either the road is too narrow or it’s lined with people.”

For those of you who haven't had a chance to get your hands on the Sam McGuire yet then the perfect opportunity awaits tonight (Friday).

Over the last 15 years Northern Ireland-based Belgian Danny Blondell selects between four and six Irish riders and sends them to Belgium where they stay with local families and contest pro and semi-pro races.

During his three weeks there Bolger contested seven races – known locally as Kermesse – each with over 100 junior starters that ran over three or four laps of a town centre course.

Earlier this year the 18-year-old was selected as one of four riders for the Belgian Project – one of the most prestigious stepping stones for Irish riders with ambitions to turn professional.

This criterium race in Roeselare – on a Tuesday evening – attracted entries from Tour de France stars like Tom Pidcock and Green Jersey winner Wout Van Aert.

“On my first day, I went with the family to watch a pro-race,” Bolger told the Killarney Advertiser. “There were 40,000 people lining the streets. In Belgium the locals use these events as social occasions and go out and meet their friends.”

The road racing season has now closed in Ireland. Bolger’s last outing was the Charleville Two-Day in Cork a few weeks ago where he placed sixth overall in amongst senior riders. He moves to off-road Cyclocross for the winter season.

Bolger was selected for the Belgian Project while racing the Junior Tour of Ireland with the Munster team in July. He then travelled to Austria with the Munster squad to race in a three-day event before making his own way to Belgium

The second half started in a welter of excitement as Elizabeth Mohan pounced for two more goals and it was definitely game on at 5-10 to 4-6. But Abbeydorney put the foot on the gas again to pull further clear and despite a well taken point by Caelyn O’Grady and another 1-1 from Elizabeth Mohan they couldn't make any further inroads into the Abbeydorney lead. Still the contribution of Elizabeth Mohan , who notched 4-4, cannot be passed without recognition. On Sunday morning they headed to Glenbeigh to take on table topping Cromane knowing that they had to either match or better Clounmacon/Moyvanes result who were facing Firies, to advance. After a hour of serious endeavour and commitment, having put it up to Cromane they fell just short , losing by just two points, 2-14 to 1-15. So it was on how Clounmacon/Moyvane would do against Firies. Again another close encounter, which saw the North Kerry side come on top by two points. A very tight group, the girls just came out on the wrong side of things, where a kick of the ball either way would see them qualify.

SOCCER: The Killarney Celtic U13 A squad that defeated Tralee Dynamos.

Cian McMahon was unlucky not to rattle the back of the St. Kierans net just before the half time whistle. We led 0-9 to 0-5 at the break. We continued the second half just as we left the first half, working hard and defending well. Within 2 minutes of the second half we had clocked up 1-1 from play with a Mark Fitzgerald point and a Cian McMahon goal. The goal coming from a beautiful David Shaw foot pass. Neil O’Shea and Michael Potts continued to impress at the back before Kieran O’Leary sent a bullet passed the St Kierans goalie in the 27 minute giving us a comfortable 9 point lead with 3 minutes left to play. St. Kierans rallied late in the game scoring 3 successive points from

In the second half Legion looked like they were pulling away but spirited resistance and points from Ger Sheehan and John Devane kept us in touch and when Gearoid Kerins found the net with a bullet of a shot it was game on. NATIONAL INTER-COUNTY: Well done to Damien Fleming and John McGrath on picking up National Inter-County silver medals with Kerry in Rocklodge at the rain curtailed event weekend. It is Damien's third inter-county medal to go with the previous silver (2010) and bronze (2014) he has won with Kerry at National level while this is John's first National Inter-County medal. Congratulations also to team management Sean Kelly and Ger O'Connor on their involvement with the team this year that yielded medals at both provincial and national level.

IRISH OFFSHORE ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Congratulations to Finn O’Sullivan, who made club history last weekend as the first winner of an Irish Offshore Rowing Championship title for Muckross RC. Finn represented the club at the Irish Offshore Rowing Championships Regatta held on the east coast in Wicklow. In the Mens Open Quad, Finn raced as part of a composite crew along with Kealan Mannix (Rosscarbery RC), Luke Sutton (UL RC), Tokyo Olympian Ronan Byrne (UCC RC) and cox David Hussey (Portmagee RC). In testing conditions, the crew dominated the 4 kilometre race with a winning margin of more than 25 seconds. Finn also raced in the Mens Single event, qualifying for the final from his heat and placing 12th overall. Well done to Finn for flying the flag so well for MRC and bringing home well earned silverware. Unfortunately the changes made on Thursday evening to the weekend’s racing schedule meant our remaining crews were unable to travel to Wicklow as originally planned. The club was also due to compete in the Mens Double and Junior Quad events with a second crew also entered in the Mens Open Quad. Well done to our crews who put in a great effort in their training leading up to the Championship weekend. The event also brought the curtain down on the club’s rowing year for 2021/22. Another successful year for the club in both flatwater and offshore rowing. The new season is already upon
