People facing 'toughest Christmas in decades’
It's a choice of "heat or eat" for over 300 local people desperately seeking support from the St Vincent de Paul this Christmas.
|
By Sean Moriarty
Local helpers on the ground say that they've seen an increase in over one hundred people this year who are faced with impossible choices. And, many of those same people are the very ones who previously supported the charity, according to the Killarney branch of St Vincent de Paul (SVP).
Demand for its services is now at its highest in years in the run up to Christmas.
This time last year SVP in Killarney helped around 200 families but that figure will exceed 300 families by Christmas as people grapple with the 'Cost of Living Crisis'.
The local branch says it is getting “over 10 calls a day" from people seeking help and many of those calls are coming from "people who helped us in the past and now need help themselves”.
As well as usual food parcels, the local SVP is getting more and more calls from people seeking help to pay their electricity and fuel bills.
The rising costs of energy is having an effect on local families but is also effecting SVP’s budgets.
Last year, on average, the charity gave out fuel vouchers for €400 but they are adding another €200 to this year’s voucher and "that is not even filling a tank”.
Breda Dwyer is the President of the local conference of St Vincent de Paul.
“So far this month, we have helped nearly 300 in some way, we are getting 10 calls a day,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.
“There is a lot of demand for fuel vouchers, people may be getting the Government grant but there are a lot of very old houses in the Killarney area that are almost impossible to heat, they are not insulated.”
The charity has also revealed that the most significant increase in calls this year is coming from lower income earners in full-time employment.
“What we are finding is that people who helped us in the past now need help
themselves," added Breda.
Across counties Kerry and Cork the charity expects to reach a peak of 1,400 calls per week this month.
Local people seeking help should call the dedicated Killarney phone number on 087 6164888.
“If the phone is not answered, leave a message. We will get back to everyone who makes contact.”
CAR DRAW
The annual SVP South-West Annual Car Draw will be a key fundraising event for the region this year, with tickets and free post return envelopes delivered to every household in Kerry and Cork and the added option of buying tickets
EPA grants asphalt production licence despite local objections
Residents of the Clasheen and Minish areas have expressed their disappointment after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted permission for an asphalt manufacturing plant in their area.
The EPA upheld planning permission previously granted by Kerry County
Council in May of this year which granted Roadstone a licence to produce asphalt in the old John A Woods quarry near Minish.
Since the plans were first announced, in the autumn of 2020, locals have raised concerns saying that the plant was a pollution risk, especially as it is so close to
online. Donations are also welcome through both channels.
SVP South-West’s Regional Co-ordinator Gerry Garvey said the charity is gearing up for one of the most difficult periods for the South-West region in many years.
“We have received an unprecedented number of calls for this time of year and from all walks of life."
Tickets for the raffle cost €5 each and can be returned in the Freepost SVP envelope or dropped into the SVP Regional Office at Ozanam House, 2 Tuckey Street, Cork or Unit 2 Monavalley Business Park, Tralee.
You can also purchase tickets online at app.galabid.com/svpcardraw.
First prize will be a brand-new Ford Focus, kindly donated by the Kavanagh family’s TOMAR Trust, and there will be six other cash prizes. The final date for entries will be 12 noon on Friday, January 6.
The draw will take on Wednesday, January 11 at CAB Motor Company showrooms, where the winners will be announced. Details of the winners will be published on www.SVP.ie.
DONATION
A €25,000 donation has been made to the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) local conference in Killarney to help individuals and families over the Christmas period.
The RISE Community Fund supported by National Broadband Ireland, the company delivering the National Broadband Plan (NBP), made the donation to mark National Broadband Ireland’s 25,000th connection to its high-speed fibre broadband network, which was officially announced at the Cahernane House Hotel, Killarney last week.
Killarney Cardiac Response Unit is also one of six community groups in Kerry set to receive €1,000 from the group. The unit now plans to expand their communication systems and provide an additional projector for their training courses.
Killarney National Park.
They were informed by letter on Wednesday that their appeal was unsuccessful and that Roadstone was granted permission to start manufacturing on the site.
“We fought a fight but we lost our appeal,” resident spokesperson David Murphy said.
"We are very disappointed. There's not much more we can do."
Some of the restrictions placed on Roadstone include noise and air quality monitoring.

Fassbender visits school he founded
That's right, Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender was in town and The West End House School of Arts founder enjoyed ‘An Evening with Colm Bairéad’ the award winning writer and director of Irish language blockbuster ‘An Cailín Ciúin’.
Fassbender is on a pre-Christmas trip home from Portugal where he now lives with his partner and son and visited Fossa NS and St Oliver’s NS before attending the event with Bairéad at West End House.
“We’re very passionate about creating a community for people to explore their own creative process, so having Colm here last weekend was very special in doing just that. Colm’s work is inspiring on a global scale, but particularly here in Ireland, and we were very honoured to welcome him to West End House to speak to our students about his beautiful film ‘An Cailín Ciúin’,” Creative Director of West End House School of Arts,
Jessica Courtney Leen, said.
The school is a thriving centre of creativity in Killarney with Curriculum Classes, After School Classes and Adult Evening Classes in Acting and Writing.
“In such a short time the West End School of Arts has made an enormous contribution in the Killarney area by facilitating all ages to engage and get involved with every aspect of stage and screenwriting and performance.
"It was a privilege for me to attend the special evening with Colm Bairéad and hear him tease out the process of adopting Claire Keegan's novella ‘Foster’ for the big screen in his award-winning Irish language film.
"I was thrilled to meet and tell Colm in person - Beir bua le do scannáin An Cailín Ciúin i Hollywood ag Óiche na hOscair,” said Sean O’ Luanigh who is a student in the West End House Writing for Screen course.
New LuXX screens open tonight
Movie lovers are in for a treat tonight (Friday) as Cinema Killarney unveils its new 'LuXX' auditoriums.
Workers have been busy at the landmark East Avenue cinema over the last week installing new, upgraded screens, deluxe leather recliner seats and enhanced sound systems. And it's just in time for the release of the highly anticipated, 'Avatar: The Way of Water'.
“The LuXX auditoriums feature wall to wall screens, and state-of-the-art projection, giving patrons high definition picture quality for the ultimate cinema experience,” Jagoda Piedel, Cinema Kil-
Who'll get 'The Bono Bit'?
They've spent the week bribing, sweet talking and pleading - but it still remains to be seen who'll get 'The Bono Bit' in a school charity song.
Not only is it the staff of St Oliver's National School who are fighting over a prestigious musical part in Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas Time' - but Oscar nominated actor Michael Fassbender and Best Irish Male Singer Paddy Caseyare all in it to win it too.
Everyone wants to be the star but only one can have the part - and all will be revealed today (Friday) when part two of a comedy sketch is released by St Oliver's on their YouTube channel.
Teacher Noel O'Sullivan, who is an accomplished musician, teamed up with Principal Colm Ó'Suilleabháin, and Oisín O’Connor, son of well known local musician Liam. They made a comedy sketch to raise awareness about the charity song and so far it has almost 2,500 views in just three days online.
"The reaction has been great," Noel told the Killarney Advertiser.
"Oisín O'Connor suggested to me we do a cover of Band Aid after the success of the Hallowe'en video we made. When I proposed the idea to staff, a few joked about the Bono line. I just thought it would be
funny to make a comedy sketch based on that. Luckily, it coincided with Paddy Casey and Michael Fassbender popping into St Oliver's, so we made hay while we could!"
He said that the staff were "equally creative" adding their ideas to the original basic idea and it developed into the entertaining two part series!
"Colm was very supportive and proved, like the other staff who featured, to have considerable talent in the acting department! Musically, I always love including as many as possible so I was delighted to have about 23 staff involved in the solos and instrumentals, with about 60 staff singing in the chorus. Our hope is for people to donate to the Concern Horn of Africa Crisis appeal."
All that remains now is to find out who made the cut!
Tickets start at €8.99 and can be pre-purchased at www.cinemakillarney. com.
Sunday's Winter Solstice cancelled
This Sunday's Solstice trek on the Paps of Anú has been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions being forecast.
The advice was given by mountaineering guide leader Donie Mulcahy. Derry Healy, one of the organisers, is suggesting to join with the special char-
ity fundraiser planned for St Stephen’s Day, which will see the Sam Maguire being carried to the top of the Paps mountains in aid of the Kerry-Cork Cancer Link Bus and the Brian Lawlor Trust. Participants will gather at Glenflesk GAA Club at 9.30am on December 26 and then on to the 690m peak of the Western Pap.

Santa and parade are back again!
The weather may have put a halt to last Saturday's Christmas in Killarney Magic Parade but Santa didn't let the children down!
Organisers took the decision to cancel due to the numerous weather alerts and following consultations with An Garda Síochána.
Concern had been expressed about the safety of people driving from and returning to more remote areas where roads were still dangerous.
However, Santa was very busy as he met hundreds of children at his grotto before dashing off to other appointments including Kate Kearney’s Cottage.
When he heard that many local children were disappointed that the parade was cancelled - including some whose parents had booked them into local hotels - he decided to make a surprise visit to
Main St around the same time the parade should have been taking place.
“Mrs Claus heard that many of you were unhappy and that many people had travelled especially to Killarney this weekend for the parades,” Santa explained.
“The decision not to run the parades was made in good fate and if you were travelling to Killarney just to see the parades we were fearful of your safety going home.
“But Mrs Claus has asked me, or maybe she told me, to put on my boots and to go into town.”
There is another spectacular parade to look forward to tomorrow (Saturday) at 6pm.
IT'S BACK: After being cancelled last Saturday due to the weather, the Christmas in Killarney Parade will be back tomorrow (Saturday) at 6pm.

Lions Christmas food appeal in full swing
| By Michelle Crean
The Killarney Lions Club Food Appeal street collection is taking place today (Friday) at various locations in the town.
Donations received will be used to provide food hampers for families in need in the Killarney area.
Transition Year students from Killarney’s three secondary schools have already supported the Food Appeal by raising money through activities such as a bake
sale, no uniform day and Christmas markets. They are also helping to prepare the hampers along with Lions Club volunteers.
“Our Food Appeal has been running for many years and is always very generously supported by the people of Killarney. The Transition Year students have also been amazing,” President of Killarney Lions Club, Denis Doolan, said.
“We are very grateful for that support, which will be more important than ever given the cost of living crisis facing many families this year.”
An Post apologises for delays at New Street Post Office
| By Sean Moriarty
An Post has apologised to Killarney customers after many were forced to queue outside in sub-zero temperatures earlier this week.
One Killarney resident contacted the Killarney Advertiser after they had a bad experience on Monday in what was a particularly busy day at the New Street branch.
“The post office in Killarney is so poorly
designed and there are not enough staff on duty to handle, at peak times, the customers requiring counter services.
People were queuing in very cold temperatures,” he said.
“There is nowhere to wrap parcels, space for customers is at a minimum and only two or three counters are open at any given time; staff are very professional but the post office is understaffed.”
A spokesperson for An Post apologised.
“We faced a very busy pre-Christmas Monday with packets and parcels pre-
pared over the weekend for posting, many of them headed for international destinations and requiring extra levels of processing. We are conscious of matching available staff to busy periods during the day particularly in the busy 12noon to 3pm period and will be conscious of that in the busy days to come,” she said. “We will work hard in the coming days to ensure that customers are dealt with efficiently and without undue delay. Thanking all our customers for their understanding at this busy time.”

St Francis buskers raise €2,500
There was a great atmosphere with plenty of songs and laughter on Friday at the St Francis Special School’s Choir annual busking day.
| By Sean Moriarty
It took place in the Killarney Outlet Centre and such was the support that €2,500 was raised for the school.
After a break of three years, the pupils and staff of the school’s choir were delighted to be back busking.
First run in 2018, and again in 2019, the busking fundraiser fell foul to pandemic-related crowd-gathering rules for the last two years.
But the success of last weekend’s fund-
raiser has given the school the confidence to make it an annual event.
“We were blown away by all the support, we raised €2,500 which was our biggest ever – we hope to build on this and make it an annual event,” Mary O’Riordan, the teacher at the school with responsibility for the choir, said.
“We are so proud of all our pupils. They really shone on the day, it was a wonderful experience for them.”
All funds raised by the choir will be donated to the care facility.
Loreto laptops an early Christmas present for pupils
| By Michelle Crean
A local school received an early Christmas delivery this week - as they excitedly got 30 brand new laptops!
Staff and pupils of Loreto National School were busy logging on and setting up their new Dynabook laptops and a charging trolley which were bought through ICT grants for the school. The additional technology will enhance
the fantastic facilities already present in the school, Principal Brian O'Sullivan explained to the Killarney Advertiser.
"This class set can be moved from classroom to classroom and boost the pupils’ technological and research skills. We are already home to 20 iPads but this purchase will add another element to the pupil’s experience of technology in the school. They will also be a huge benefit to our Sixth Class pupils as they transition to secondary school."

Businessmen inducted into the Order of Innisfallen
Brothers-in-law Donal Ring and Michael O’Donoghue were inducted into the Order of Innisfallen at a reception in historic Muckross House in Killarney on Wednesday evening.
The awards scheme, a collaboration between Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Kerry County Council, was initiated in 2005 to recognise outstanding contributions by people to the economic development of the town and, in particular, its tourism industry.
Donal Ring is the founder of Munster Joinery and the O'Donoghue Ring Hotels Collection. He and his brother, Patrick, since deceased, established Munster Joinery in 1973 with a small operation at the rear of their family home in Ballydesmond, on the Kerry-Cork border.
The company employs in excess of 1,800 people with a further 900 on the payroll in the UK and has grown to become one of the largest manufacturers of windows and doors in Europe. Next year they will celebrate 50 years in business.
In 1978, he and his wife, Noreen (née O’Donoghue) purchased the property then known as the East Avenue Hotel –now the 66-bedroom Killarney Avenue Hotel.
Noreen’s brother, Michael O’Donoghue, then a qualified electrician, joined them in the hospitality business at that stage and became one of the tourism industry’s most successful and respected operators
for over 40 years.
The company expanded in 1989 with the purchase of the Killarney Towers Hotel, with 182 bedrooms, and the 52-bedroom River Island Hotel in Castleisland before the flagship Killarney Plaza Hotel and Spa opened in 2002 with 198 bedrooms.
Michael was at the helm as managing director of the O'Donoghue Ring Collection until his recent retirement and the O'Donoghue Ring Collection is now one of the largest employers in Kerry.
Donal and Michael also expanded into the UK hospitality market with Centre Island Hotels which now has hotel properties based in Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham.
At the induction ceremony in Muckross House, President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Niall Kelleher, said both Donal Ring and Michael O’Donoghue are prime examples of what can be achieved in life through hard work and sheer determination and they have set a great example for future generations to follow.
“Wherever and whenever you see a very successful business, it is always worth reflecting that, somewhere along the way, someone made a very courageous decision. Donal Ring and Michael O’Donoghue are a wonderful example of how such courageous decisions can pay off so handsomely,” he said.
Deputy Mayor of Killarney, Cllr John
O’Donoghue, remarked: “There is scarcely a family in Killarney, or indeed its hinterland, who have not benefitted from the work of these two men, be it through employment or the services they provide. We are extremely fortunate here in Killarney to have them both to the fore of social and economic life within our town."
MC at the ceremony, Geraldine Rosney, said Donal Ring was a remarkable businessman whose contribution to the community has been “absolutely enormous”. “He has every right to be proud of what he has done and achieved and for what he continues to do and achieve. May the next chapter in the Munster Joinery story be as successful as the story has been so far, under your visionary leadership,” she remarked.
She said when Michael O’Donoghue com-
mits himself to something, he does so totally and when he dreams, he dreams big. “What he has achieved, what he has done and what he has contributed to the overall benefit and well-being of Killarney and Kerry is spectacular,” she added.
Previous Order of Innisfallen recipients include actor Michael Fassbender, former Taoiseach Enda Kenny, industrialist Isolde Liebherr, Charles, the former Prince of Wales and now King of England and entertainer Daniel O’Donnell.
Innisfallen Island is one of Killarney’s best-known and most historic heritage sites. It began as a place of healing and became a major centre of learning where the Annals of Innisfallen, the oldest contemporary source of the history of Munster, were
scripted.
Two entrepreneurs who have built up an empire creating thousands of jobs, from very humble beginnings, have been honoured in recognition of the enormous contribution they have made to the economic and social fabric of the community in which they live.

Killarney chef earns a World Cup title
While the soccer World Cup may be the hot topic at the momentone young Killarney chef bagged himself his own world title.
| By Sean Moriarty
James McGrath from Ardshanavooley, was part of a 12-strong Irish team that won two bronze medals at a Culinary World Cup Final in Kirchberg, Luxembourg.
James is a Demi Chef at the famed Oak Room at Adare Manor.
He was part of a team that trained with Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board’s College of Further Education and Training, Hospitality Campus for the international Villeroy and Boch Culinary World Cup Final 2022.
The Irish team was up against 55 different nations from five continents.
The team was only founded four months ago and James was the last to be selected in October and many of their opponents have been working together for up to eight years.
The Irish team took bronze in the 'Hot Kitchen’ and 'Tables of Fire’ sections of the competition.
The first part saw them prepare a full meal, from food-preparation to final delivery, for up to 70 guests with James responsible for fish-based starters.
The second competition saw the team prepare cold platters for tables of 12, eight of whom were guests and the oth-
er four judges, but the Irish team were unable to identify what role each of the 12 diners played.
“A lot of the other teams were impressed with us, some of the junior teams have been training together for three years, the senior teams are together eight years and we only started a few months ago,” James told the Killarney Advertiser.
“We were judged on a lot of things, like preparation time, how clean we worked and food waste management.”
Kids spread some Christmas cheer
It's not just the adults that dig deep for charity - but also some local children who gave so generously to help others.
That's what the kind-hearted children from The Kiddie Kingdom Gospel Choir did as they spread some Christmas cheer.
Last week, all the children emptied out their piggy banks to raise money for the charity 'Friends of the Children of Chernobyl Killarney. They raised an amazing €132 for a very worthy cause.
"I wanted the kids to get the chance to give back at Christmas time and it is lovely for children to be able to raise money for other children their age," Caoimhe Lynch told the Killarney Advertiser. "The kids in my choir are always so full of joy and love and it was so lovely to see how excited they were to help other kids who are in need. It is important for kids to be given the opportunity to give as well as receive. The money will go towards helping children over in Belarus, supplying them with basic items that we often take for granted."
Kerry star's first game since horror car crash
A Kerry footballer has returned to the playing pitch for the first time since suffering serious injuries in a car crash 18 months ago.
Kilcummin Intermediate Club player, Sean O’Leary, was a passenger in a car that crashed near Abbeyfeale in July 2021. He suffered two broken legs after the horror road collision. Now studying for a Masters's in Financial Planning at the University of Limerick, O’Leary made his competitive debut for the university’s GAA club last week.
UL GAA is preparing for the inter-colleges Sigerson Cup which gets underway in January and O’Leary lined out for a challenge game between all members of the extended panel.
“It is great to be back playing, I have been training for the last two or three months but this was a full-on 45 minutes challenge game,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.
“The right leg feels good.”
O’Leary will surely be on Jack O’Connor’s radar ahead of the business end of the Gaelic football season next summer.
Extra flights from Manchester but not London this Christmas
There will be no extra flights between London airports and Kerry Airport in the run up to Christmas.
Budget airline Ryanair serves both London Luton and London Stansted. Before the pandemic the airline used to put on extra daily flights from these hubs to cope with large numbers of Kerry natives returning home for the festive season.
Additional flights will operate from Manchester this Christmas. Ryanair already operates a twice-weekly service to Manchester on Wednesdays and Sundays with three additional flights set to operate over the festive season on Thursday December 22, 29 and January 5.
Thousands of passengers are expected to travel through Kerry Airport over Christmas on flights from London, Manchester, Frankfurt Hahn and Dublin. “We realise that many passengers may not have been home for Christmas since 2019 due to the pandemic and we are particularly happy to facilitate their journeys to see loved ones at this time of year. On behalf of the Board, man-
agement and staff at Kerry Airport, I wish our customers and passengers safe travels and Happy Christmas and New Year in 2023,” John Mulhern the CEO of Kerry Airport said.
Kerry Airport will close at 6pm on Christmas Eve, reopening at 9am on St Stephen’s Day. It will be closed on Christmas Day.
The airport will operate as per normal, 9am to 6pm on New Year’s Eve, and reopens at 9am on New Year’s Day.

ADAPT ready to help as charity sees surge in numbers NEWS BRIEFS...
A Kerry charity that supports victims of Domestic Violence is ready for a busy Christmas as they’ve seen a significant increase in the numbers needing help this year.
| By Michelle Crean
300 women and their children sought help through the ADAPT refuge, advocacy and outreach services.
So far this year there have been 68 admissions to the refuge. The service also supported many other women through their Outreach programme, women who need a spectrum of supports including a safe person to talk to as well as support navigating the courts, medical, mental health, health and well-being systems.
"It is our aim to ensure that women are more supported because of their engagement with us," Catherine Casey, General Manager of ADAPT, said.
"We aim to assess the risk of harm that the perpetrators of violence pose to the women and her children and look at options that can protect that family. It is very important that ADAPT Kerry deliver a trauma-informed response that reflects the needs of the woman. We are fortunate to have the backing of the people of Kerry who support us in this aim, organisations and individuals who fundraise and continuously support our charity shop. This funding allows us to put in place, people and ‘resilience’ funds that
directly support the women and children who reach out to us.”
SUPPORT
Homelessness due to Domestic Violence is one of the biggest challenges to face the sector and creates ongoing difficulty for women trying to access safety.
“ADAPT Kerry remains committed to securing additional crisis accommodation for families in Kerry. We are striving to ensure that Kerry is prioritised in any new refuge developments and we are thankful to Kerry County Council for their continuing commitment to tackling homelessness due to Domestic Violence.”
However, she said it can be hard to forecast what Christmas will look like in the refuge. It is the nature of the service.
“We prepare to support a full refuge, to ensure that Santa knows who is here and we provide Christmas dinner. We make sure there is a Christmas tree in every apartment and decorate our refuge, all with the aim of ensuring a chink of light and support during a crisis time and to create softer landings for women and children. We also prepare to support 75 additional families that have linked with us over the last 12 months and perhaps are facing the first Christmas in new accommodation.”
ADAPT gets a range of support from local fundraisers and from services such as Foodcloud, Foodshare, Kerry Foods, Tesco, Oakpark Daybreak, Toys Upstairs, individual donors and businesses in the community who provide vital resources.
Christ's crib is now mobile
If you can't get to the Christmas crib then the crib can make it to you as a local group have made a mobile version which can be transported across town.
The idea came about from a Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC) committee of the Kerry dioceses. Richard O’Brien volunteered to design it and make it himself inspired by past Vatican cribs.
The Legion of Mary, which is led by Shelia Goulding, is offering to bring the crib around to different areas of Killarney. There will also be carol singing and prayers offered and two priests with the group Fr Derek O'Connell, St Mary of the Angels Beaufort, and Fr Eamon O'Driscoll OFM of the Killarney Franciscans. "There are a few days left for booking,” Dan Crowin told the Killarney Advertiser. “Anyone interested can talk with Shelia by ringing her on 087 7796966."
Spa GAA Club’s awards night

Carol service at St Mary’s
An Ecumenical Carol Service will take place at St Mary’s (Church of Ireland) the Church of the Sloes this Sunday (December 18) at 3pm.
Family Time at Killarney Library
Family events and activities will take place in all libraries in Kerry during the month of December to support the involvement of the whole family in children’s reading. The 'Family Time With Your Library' events aim to support a family-focused approach to reading with children as part of the national 'Right to Read' programme and to increase awareness of the benefits of reading and promote reading as a fun, recreational activity for children.
As part of the programme, authors Katie O’Donoghue and Roisin Meaney will be hosting online storytime sessions which the whole family can enjoy from the comfort of their own homes. A link to register can be found on www.kerrylibrary.ie.
A range of craft activities will also be held in Killarney Library on Saturday mornings to encourage families to visit the library.
New services available this year include LOTE4Kids and Times Tables Rock Stars and details can be found online.
Staff at Kerry Library wish to extend an invitation to all to visit at any time where they are always available to advise and help select books for children of various ages.

Ukrainians sing from the heart as a thank you to community
Beautiful sounds and hand crafted gifts
| By Natalya Krasnenkova
A charity concert was held at St Mary's Church of Ireland and it was packed to the rafters as the 200 seats could not accommodate all present.
A choir of Ukrainians currently living in Killarney spent three weeks in daily rehearsals to present the best Ukrainian carols and had prepared a large programme of traditional Christmas songs and melodies.
Fortunately, among the participants there are many professional singers Okasna Bondarenko, Anna Domina and Olena Basko, who helped other participants to sound sublime.
“The whole choir sang from the heart. It was an opportunity to show what a good Ukrainian fun song is,” Anna Domina said.
The children's choir also prepared the song 'Oh, who loves St Nicholas?'.
Saint Nicholas is for Ukrainians what Santa Claus is for the Irish. Children are waiting for St Nicholas who traditionally brings them gifts and puts them under the pillow. It is no accident that during the performance of this song, the Ukrainians treated all the little guests to sweets.
The Ukrainian violinist sisters Yeroshovy from Listowel impressed everyone with their virtuoso performance. People in the hall cried and applauded when they heard the world-famous 'Melody' by the Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk.
Bandur player Ksenia Rusnak travelled
from Lisdoonvarna where she lives now to perform several compositions. The Irish Cathedral Choir joined the concert with several Christmas carols accompanied by the organ and Adrian McSweeney sang a traditional Irish song.
"We really wanted to introduce the Irish audience to our musical Christmas traditions. Now the whole world sings the 'Carol of the Bells' written by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych. In Ukrainian, this Christmas song is called 'Shchedryk'. Exactly one hundred years ago, the premiere of this song took place in New York.
Singing and spending this special time together, we can become closer to each other and connect culturally and spiritually," Yulya Spillane, one of the organisers, said.
To commemorate the concert, all guests received Christmas cards and angels made by Ukrainian children.
"We will be happy if these small gifts decorate your homes and create a festive atmosphere."
Ukrainians are very grateful to Rev. Simon J Lumby from St Mary's Church for the wonderful venue and KASI for providing a room for rehearsals.
After the successful concert, the Ukrainian choir received several invitations for future performances. All those who could not make it to last Sunday's concert are invited to the church in Fossa next Wednesday, December 21, with other concerts also possible in the coming week.
made for a very special occasion on Sunday as the Ukrainian community came together to thank locals for their warm welcome and hospitality.

Water restrictions in Killarney area as big freeze set to continue
With the cold snap expected to continue for the next few days, Irish Water is asking customers across the wider Killarney area to conserve water and help ensure critical supplies can be maintained.
Overnight restrictions are required in the Milltown, Barleymount, Aghadoe, Rockfield, Gneeveguilla, Faha, Rathmore, Shrone, and Barraduff areas to help supplies recover due to the increased demand. In recent days Irish Water has seen a noticeable increase in water usage across Kerry which has restricted supply to some customers in parts of the county.
“With the temperatures dipping below -5 degrees in some areas this week it is really important to continue the regular maintenance of your property, protect outside taps and farm troughs, and check empty premises. It also a good idea to familiarise yourself with your own internal water system and particularly how to turn off your supply at the stopcock so
that you can protect your property in the event of a burst pipe,” Operations Lead with Irish Water, Oliver Harney, said.
“We also recommend that people don’t run taps continually as this is not an effective way of preventing frozen pipes and can cause other problems such as frozen drains. It also puts further pressure on water supplies that are already challenged by the freezing conditions."
Irish Water and Kerry County Council are working together to address issues on these supplies. Crews continue to work on the ground to restore supply to those impacted.
Doherty wins a Cyclocross World Cup Trophy
Killarney Cycling Club member Frank Doherty has a World Cup Trophy to his name after finishing third in an international Cyclocross competition on Saturday.
Cycling Ireland hosted the ninth round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup at the Sport Ireland Campus in Abbotstown, Dublin over the weekend.
While some of the sport’s biggest names took part in the main event on Sunday, club and national riders were allowed enter support races over the same course on Saturday.
Doherty has ambitions to contest Rás Mumhan next Easter and is in the middle of an extensive winter training campaign to make the cut for the biggest road race in Kerry.
Cyclocross, a cross-country style race, is popular in traditional cycling countries like Belgium and The Netherlands. It was devised to give road racers an opportunity to compete through the winter and has grown to be one of the world’s most popular cycling disciplines.
Doherty entered the event as part of his winter training regime.
Sunday’s main event was won by threetime world champion Belgian Wout van Aert, a nine-time Tour de France stage
winner.
On Saturday, Doherty competed on the same course that the world stars tackled the following day.
He describes the sport as being a hybrid of cross-country running, mountain biking and road racing.
“The atmosphere was crazy up there,” Doherty told the Killarney Advertiser. “But I have a trophy that says the World Cup on it.”
He was surprised to finish third in the Senior Mens’ race. He was grouped with other riders including junior and masters and had lapped several other racers over the course of his seven laps.
“I thought I might have been fifth, I was over loading the van when I heard: ‘Can Frank Doherty make his way to the podium’ over the Tannoy.”
Mark McGlynn was the only other Killarney Cycling Club member competing in the event but his bike suffered a mechanical failure and he was not classified as a finisher.

NPWS acquire more land in the National Park
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has acquired lands near Derrycunnihy Church in Killarney National Park.
The acquisition consists of over 70 hectares at Derrycunnihy, a site completely surrounded by Killarney National Park lands.
It is a hugely important addition to the Park as it is an area of high conservation and ecological value, and all of the lands are part of a European site of nature conservation, MacGillycuddy Reeks and Killarney National Park SAC.
The habitat there consists of dry heath, oak woodlands, pockets of blanket bog and an oligotrophic lake, a true reflection of what lands in a National Park should be.
These lands are close to Derrycunnihy Church, an important architectural feature within Killarney National Park. This iconic structure, one of the most beautifully situated, scenic churches in Ireland, has recently undergone conservation works and is home to a number of protected species including the lesser horseshoe bat.

Best friends become husband and wife
WEDDING OF THE WEEK
Sinead McCarthy, who is the General Manager of The Brehon Hotel, wed well known High Street restaurateur Denis Murphy who runs Murphy Brownes, in St Mary's Cathedral on Thursday, November 17.
Fr Kieran O'Brien officiated and the couple headed to Ballyseede Castle for their reception.
And the couple said it was a day they'll never forget.
Their wedding was a long time coming - but back then both Sinead, daughter of Maura and Patrick McCarthy, and Denis, son of Denis and Anne Murphy, didn't even know that they'd eventually get together.
They first met when studying hospitality in CIT in 2002. Then Denis took a summer job in the then newly opened Brehon Hotel while Sinead worked in The Plaza. They happily shared a house as friends in Woodlawn Road before parting ways for another few years. But it seems that they were destined to be together as eight years ago Sinead came back to live and work in Killarney as Bar Manager in The Brehon and a year later Denis took up the role of Manager in The Grand.
They shared a house in Bridgefield but it was a further two years before they realised that they wanted to be together. Last September Denis got down on

one knee and Sinead said yes. However, it was only July this year that they started planning their big day and with such a short time frame the couple were delighted that everything went off without a hitch!
The bridal party included Sinead's sister Siobhan McCarthy as Bridesmaid, while Groomsman duties fell to William Murphy, Denis' brother. Pageboy was Dylan Fennessy and Flowergirl was Annaleise Sheehan.
Local photographer Ian Cronin took them to Dinis, the National Park, and Fossa Golf Course.
Sinead's brother Donnacha, who is vision impaired, left the day after to take part in the 2022 World Triathlon Championship Finals in Abu Dhabi. Denis' friend Mark Murphy also delayed his World Cup plans by three days in order to be there for the big day!
Denis who hates public speaking surprised his new bride by doing a speech which included a two minute poem.
"She was extremely surprised," Denis told the Killarney Advertiser.
Another surprise on the day was Denis' 03 Toyota Yaris which they used to make their entrance to the hotel - surprising all their guests!
"As comical as all the guests found it, the reaction of both mothers was the best!"
It's a love story like no other - in fact, it's actually more like something out of a fairytale as two best friends got married last month.

Killarney to Killorglin road plans advance
Plans to upgrade the Killarney to Killorglin road are advancing.
They include realigning the road near Killorglin and a new footpath and cycleway.
Kerry County Council will lodge an application to An Bord Pleanala in the early part of the New Year.
In the interim they are progressing with environmental studies, design, service diversions and structures.
Topographical surveys will also commence in the next few weeks.
“I am also pleased to have secured confirmation that Kerry Council will be engaging with the adjoining landowners
out as far as the new FEXCO IRD Hub prior to Christmas,” said local Councillor Michael Cahill.
"I have also called on the Minister for Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to provide funding for a dedicated maintenance crew for the Ring of Kerry road, as this is the primary tourist route in Ireland, accommodating thousands of buses, cars, trucks, cyclists, and requires daily attention to the issues that present there, including hedge cutting, road upgrade, drainage, pedestrian and cycle access, to mention but a few. The Ring of Kerry is as important to tourism and business in Kerry and in Ireland as the M50 is to Dublin.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Gift Vouchers
Gift vouchers are any voucher, coupon or other document (including an electronic document) that can be used instead of money to pay (or pay in part) for goods and services.
Gift vouchers come in different forms, such as paper gift certificates, electronic cards or gift cards. They can be issued by a single business or for a group of shops (such as a shopping centre).
When you buy a gift voucher, you enter into a contract with the trader. The voucher is like cash that you hand over in exchange for goods and services.
What are the current rules that apply to gift vouchers?
The rules for gift vouchers sold after 2 December 2019 are set out in the Consumer Protection (Gift Vouchers) Act 2019.
The rules state:
Gift vouchers must have no expiry date or be valid for at least five years - see ‘Expiry dates on gift vouchers’ below.
Traders cannot specify that a gift voucher is spent in one transaction
Traders cannot charge a fee to change the name on a gift voucher (if you have to register a name on the voucher)
If the balance remaining on a gift voucher is more than €1 after you buy something with it, a trader must reimburse the balance to you. They can give you cash, make an electronic transfer or give you another gift voucher.
Are there any exceptions to the rules?
The rules do not apply to: Vouchers you can only use to buy specified goods and services at a discounted price, from a specified trader on a specified date, or for a specified period of three months or less.
For example:
• Vouchers from deal websites such as Groupon or Pigsback
• Vouchers issued as part of a customer loyalty or promotion scheme
• Vouchers issued as a refund for goods you returned to a trader
• Vouchers and gift cards sold before 2 December 2019. The expiry period and the terms and conditions that applied at the time of purchase still apply to these vouchers
The rules do not apply to electronic money gift cards.
What is an electronic money gift card?
In general, electronic money gift cards (for example, One4all gift cards), are cards that can be used in a number of different shops.
Electronic money gift cards are regulated under the European Communities (Electronic Money) Regulations 2011.
The Central Bank is responsible for enforcing these regulations.
Under the Regulations:
You must be informed of the conditions for using the e-money card, including any fees before you buy the card Fees must be proportionate and in line with the costs actually incurred by the e-money issuer (that is, the business who issues the card to you)
Is there an expiry date on gift vouchers?
There is a five-year minimum expiry date for all vouchers sold after 2 December 2019. This is set out in the Consumer Protection (Gift Vouchers) Act 2019. Under the rules, gift vouchers must either:
Have no expiry date, or must be valid for at least five years from the date the gift voucher is issued.
You must be given details of the expiry date in a durable format (for example, on paper or by email) at the time you buy the gift voucher.
The legislation does not apply to gift vouchers bought before 2 December 2019.
What are my rights if I still have a voucher bought before 2 December 2019?
You should have been made aware of the expiry date at time of purchase. Some traders print the expiry on the voucher itself, on the packaging, on the website or you can see the policy in the shop. If it is not clear, ask or look for the policy on the website before buying. Expiry dates can vary as the trader decides how long they are valid for.
Some traders may be flexible. If your voucher has expired, contact the trader to see if they will extend it. However, if you bought the gift voucher before 2 December 2019, they have no legal obligation to do this and some may charge a fee.
What are my rights if I lose a gift voucher?
Gift vouchers are like cash, so if you lose them, the company does not have to replace them. If a voucher was made out to you specifically and is not transferable to anyone else, you may be able to get a replacement. This depends on the gift voucher’s terms and conditions and the company’s policy.
If you lose a gift card, you may be able to get a replacement card but you need to check with the retailer. You could be charged a fee for the replacement card.

New Zealand’s smoke-free ambitions move forward
New Zealand is on target to become completely smoke-free by 2025.
A new law came into effect on Tuesday that outlaws the sale of tobacco products to those born on or after January 1, 2009.
That means that anyone now aged 14 or younger will never legally be able to buy tobacco or cigarettes in New Zealand. The ban is aimed at preventing future generations from taking up smoking and is part of a wider Government push to make the country “smoke-free” by 2025.
The New Zealand Government will also make it harder for adults to buy cigarettes.
The number of licensed retailers will reduce from around 6,000 to just 600 by the end of next year. Tobacco products will no longer be available for purchase in supermarkets or local shops.
“Thousands of people will live longer, healthier lives and the health system will be $5 billion better off from not needing to treat the illnesses caused by smoking, such as numerous types of cancer, heart attacks, strokes, amputations,” said the country’s Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall.
ADDICTION
The legislation will also reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in tobacco products, aiming to make them less addictive.
"It means nicotine will be reduced to non-addictive levels and communities
will be free from the proliferation and clustering of retailers who target and sell tobacco products in certain areas," Minister Verrall added. "We want to make sure young people never start smoking." Doctors and other health experts in the country have welcomed the reforms.
"It will help people quit or switch to less harmful products, and make it much less likely that young people get addicted to nicotine," said Dr Janet Hook from the University of Otago.
Australia is likely to follow its Southern Hemisphere neighbour. Europe will follow too and already Denmark has put
plans in places that are very similar to New Zealand’s.
The Scandinavian country is considering banning the sale of cigarettes and other nicotine products to anyone born after 2010.
“Our hope is that all people born in 2010 and later will never start smoking or using nicotine-based products,” Health Minister, Magnus Heunicke, said in May of this year.
“If necessary, we are ready to ban the sale of these products to this generation by progressively raising the age limit.”
Horror as hamster hides in woman's home
A video has gone viral with over 2m views on TikTok as a woman revealed what the "weird noises" were in her attic.
Kenna Buchanan was left frightened as a small hole in her apartment ceiling kept getting bigger. Eventually the loud scratching noises revealed it was her neighbour's hamster who had managed to burrow its way through the walls. It was a case of taking the saying "nightmare neighbour" to a whole new level as "Linda" the hamster chewed through the wall leaving her and her friend flabbergasted.
"Entertaining night, the time my neighbour's hamster chewed through our wall into my apartment!", she wrote on the video as she explained that she "noticed a weird hole coming from a small hole in [her] apartment".
She also texted her roommate for "backup" saying "There's something digging into our apartment".
Linda was "successfully lured out with tortilla chips and returned to her owner", Kenna concluded.
Centuries old boat found at bottom of Norwegian Lake
A boat dating from between the 1300s and 1800 has been discovered at the bottom of a Norwegian lake.
Researchers discovered the wreck during a mission to map the bed of the 363-square-kilometre Mjøsa Lake.
“Wooden shipwrecks can be very well preserved in freshwater, since they lack the organisms that usually eat wood that are found, for instance, in the ocean,”
said Øyvind Ødegård of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
“I assume that if we are going to find intact Iron Age or medieval vehicles in Norway, then Lake Mjøsa would be the place to look, since it’s big enough to have had its own distinct maritime history with a lot of seafaring and trade.”
The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment led the mission two years after performing several remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, inspections of
areas of the lake where large amounts of munitions had been dumped. The lake is a source of drinking water for about 100,000 people in Norway, according to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, so the munitions posed health risks.
The ship was discovered at a depth of around 400 metres by sonar technology. Researchers with remotely operated equipment intend to return to the site early in the New Year.
DISCOVERY: Solar imagery of the boat found some 400 metres underwater.

Irish movie based on Cork village to hit theatres
A movie, loosely based on the side effects of a County Cork Viagra factory, is set to hit Irish theatres before Christmas.
For the last two decades, the Irish media has written about the small town of Ringaskiddy, where residents complain that the fumes from the local Pfizer plant that makes Viagra, was "causing all of the men and dogs to have all sorts of problems" in the libido department.
‘Love in Kilneery’ is written by Daniel Keith, a New York based writer, director, producer, and actor.
He wrote a play that took place in the fictional town of Kilnerry, in County Donegal, and based it on the Ringaskiddy story.
The elderly residents of this small remote town panic when the Environmental Protection Agency announced that mandatory changes to their chemical plant, that created a compound used in dog shampoo, could cause a dramatic increase to their libido.
The sheriff, played by Keith, tries to maintain order and decency but mayhem ensues.
Phil Lynott immortalised on unique Euro note
Thin Lizzy co-founder Phil Lynott will receive the posthumous title of 'Irish Rock Legend' on a limited-edition zero Euro note, printed by Euro Note Souvenir.
The company has previously honoured other iconic Irish mainstays, including the city of Dublin, revolutionary Irish politician Michael Collins, Kilkenny Castle, and the Cliffs of Moher.
“Phil Lynott charmed the world with a musical style that was steeped in his Irish
upbringing,” said Peter Schneider, founder of Euro Note Souvenir.
“He inspired countless musicians with his passion and skill, and he truly deserves to be remembered as an Irish Rock Legend.” These zero Euro notes will be printed in the same facility that presses Euro banknotes for the EU at the behest of Euro Note Souvenir an exclusive license-holder of zero Euro notes in Ireland, which gives the company the ability to create commemorative Euro notes with the look and feel of real Euro currency.
Legendary broadcaster to wind down radio career
Legendary broadcaster Ronan Collins has announced that his final RTÉ Radio 1 show will air on Friday, December 23.
Ronan, who began presenting the enormously popular The Ronan Collins Show in 1985, shared the news with his legions of listeners live on air.
In the most recent JNLR survey, published in November, The Ronan Collins Show was still the most-listened-to music show on Irish radio, drawing 232,000 listeners every weekday.
“I’ve been working on afternoon radio on RTÉ Radio 1 for nearly 38 years, plus six years before that on Radio 2, and nobody will ever know how grateful I have been for all the opportunities over the past 40
years and going forward with RTÉ.
"I often ask myself ‘how much longer can I continue to do this?', and the answer always is ‘just keep going’. New challenges await now on RTÉ in 2023, and I will continue to be on RTÉ Radio 1 with The Collins Collection on Bank Holidays,” Ronan said.
Four boys die after falling through lake ice
Four boys have tragically died after falling through ice while playing on a frozen lake in the English Midlands on Sunday last.
Aged eight, 10 and 11, the boys died despite the best efforts of a local policeman to safe them.
A fourth, aged 6, died in hospital on
Wednesday. The incident happened on Babbs Mill Lake, near the town of Solihull, a few kilometres north of Birmingham Airport. The four boys were in cardiac arrest when they were pulled from the lake, after police and members of the public jumped into the water in an attempt to save them.
"One of my officers was trying to punch through the ice to actually rescue the children themselves," said Supt Richard Harris of West Midlands Police.
"That officer, as a result of that, had some mild hypothermia. I'm pleased to say he's now been released from hospital and he's absolutely fine."

Charity display to light up Killorglin for the 16th year
The Purcell family from Killorglin are celebrating their 16th year of charity Christmas lights.
This festive season their spectacular Christmas light show is raising funds for both Recovery Haven Killorglin and Kil-
lorglin Hospice.
First run by husband and wife, Joe and Denise Purcell, their daughters Caoimhe and Naoishe are now also part of the organising team.
It started as a display for their two chil-
dren in 2003, two years later it grew into the charity display it is today.
It has grown with the times – new lighting features are added all the time. This year’s display opened on November 26 and features a life-size crib. The whole display takes three weeks to set up.
“There is constant discussion within our house throughout the year regarding the Christmas lights, so we are never not talking about Christmas,” said Denise.
“The set up takes about three weeks, working seven days a week with many early starts and working into the night as we get closer to switch on.”
The magical display will run each night until January 6.
“We have a massive collection of lights that have been accumulated over the last number of years, and also display ones that we have created ourselves,” she added.
Each child that visits the lights gets a treat.

Nissan is set to shake up the Electric Vehicle market in Ireland with the launch of the all-new Nissan Qashqai e-POWER.
The new car allows drivers to enjoy all the benefits of EV driving without ever having to plug in the car to recharge it.
The good news for Killarney motorists on the lookout for a 2023-reg car is that the all new Qashqai e-POWER is available to test drive at Randles Bros on the Muckross Road.
The unplugged, electric driving experience that the new Qashqai e-POWER delivers is set to be a game-changer for motorists who are seeking to achieve a more fuel efficient and sustainable way of driving without buying a 100% electric vehicle.
“The arrival of the new Qashqai e-POWER presents a unique solution for drivers who are not quite ready to make the move to a fully electric vehicle, but who want a car that drives like an EV, that
New Nissan is a game changer in electric motoring
optimises fuel efficiency and that lowers C02 emissions,” said Seamus Morgan, Managing Director of Nissan Ireland.
“Nissan’s e-POWER system offers the best of both worlds, delivering a responsive, efficient and quieter drive, without the need to recharge. It is a key component in Nissan’s drive towards electrification and our growing range of electric, hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles empower drivers to find the car that is right for them, wherever
they sit on their journey towards 100% electric driving.”
The e-POWER system is comprised of a high-output battery that is complemented by a variable compression ratio 1.5 litre three-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine generating 156hp, a power generator, inverter and a 140kW electric motor of similar size and output as found in Nis-
san’s electric vehicles.
The unique element of Nissan’s e-POWER system is that the petrol engine is solely used to charge a battery that powers an electric motor to drive the wheels. The electric motor is the sole source of power. This leads to superior fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions compared with a traditional internal combustion engine.
The Qashqai e-POWER is available from SV specification level and pricing starts at €42,500.

Muskerry Vintage Club officially open Macroom bypass
Lar Cummins, secretary of the Muskerry Vintage Club, had the honour of driving the first car on the newly opened Macroom Bypass.
An eight kilometre section of the 22km project was opened on Friday morning last by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Mayor of County of Cork, Cllr Danny Collins.
First started in 2017, the new road will cut travel times between Killarney and Macroom.
The remaining 14km stretch around Ballyvourney is expected to open by the end
of next year.
25 members of Muskerry Vintage Club were invited to lead the convoy of cars along the first section on Friday.
The fleet included an Audi Coupe, an Opel Manta, a Jaguar E-Type and a classic Mini.
Lar Cummins, driving his 1953 Riley RME, was the first person to travel the new road.
His front seat passenger was none other than Micheál Martin.

How to pick your next investment
I started actively investing in my early 20s. Looking back, I had absolutely no clue what I was doing, but I was convinced I knew it all.
What I lacked in knowledge, I made up for with blind enthusiasm. I traded headlines and invested in every ticker symbol the financial media was peddling.
After a few quick wins, I was hooked, convinced that my proprietary blend of Google searching and back-of-theenvelope Math was enough to beat the market.
As early retirement beckoned, it all came crashing down. (Cue shocked gasps)
XRP and a few more YOLO trades wiped me out, and I just sat and watched it happen.
Top Tip: Don’t risk money you don’t have trying to acquire something you don’t need.
It was both the best and worst thing that ever happened to me. It was an expensive lesson to learn, but it set me on a path I still follow to this day - a path I
have made a career out of.
As an ode to a more reckless, younger me, here are some tips I wish I had known before I started (not that I would have listened).
So, for those of you who are interested in trading the market or maybe know someone who does. I hope this helps.
QUICK TIPS
Find a niche: There is an abundance of opportunities, but trying to catch every potentially profitable investment will leave you with endless investment you have zero conviction in. Focus on one or two sectors of the market and become an expert in these areas. This will make it easier from a comparative standpoint and ensure that your knowledge is more than surface deep. You will be able to recognise true opportunities when they
CALL US: 064 6632215 OR
EMAIL: SALES@KILLARNEYADVERTISER.IE
present themselves and you will have the depth of knowledge needed to create true conviction in what you hold. Jack of all trades, master of none and all that.
Set some rules: These can be rules around allocation targets, rules about the metrics you prioritise when analysing a stock or rules about when to enter and exit trades. Whatever the rules, make sure to have them clearly defined from the outset and NEVER break them. No exceptions. Far too many people have lost entire portfolios because they kept readjusting their stop-loss lower, losing it all while waiting for a bounce that never came. Make some rules and
stick to them, it will take a lot of the mental torture out of the experience. Never over-estimate your own conviction: Conviction is important but far too often, peoples’ unwavering opinions are just blind faith masquerading as conviction. People spend so much time looking for the next buying opportunity that they forget to do recurring analysis on the names they already hold. Your original conviction was formed by a narrative that will invariably change over time. Make sure you are always trying to poke holes in your previous assertions. It’s a debilitating but necessary part of the process.
Final Word
I love everything about this game but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. There’s an entry fee in the form of hours worked and a recurring fee in the form of constant uncertainty.
For those who get it right, financial elation awaits. But beware, regardless of how much you think you know, the information is always changing, so the probability of success can be lower than you think, no matter how strongly you believe in the future story you tell yourself.
In the meantime, happy investing and feel free to reach out with any questions by scanning the QR code above.
A tale of Christmas home insurance claims
Each year hundreds of home insurance claims are caused by unusual Christmas mishaps.
Some of the most common claims are cracked television sets knocked over when putting up or taking down decorations, cooker fires and of course weather events such as storms, snow and ice. However, there are some more unusual and quirky instances also such as candle fires; we all tend to light more candles at Christmas time. Claims such as centrepieces burning dining tables and wax spilling on new carpets occur more often over Christmas.
Overwatering Christmas trees; many
claims occur after carpets and floors have been stained or damaged by water from real Christmas trees. The damage usually only becomes apparent in January. Feet through ceilings; that trip to the attic can be a dangerous pursuit. Each year before and after Christmas, people venture up to the attic to get their decorations down. Several claims are lodged annually where people accidental step between the joists in their attics and put a foot through the floor, damaging the ceiling of the room below. Your home insurance
policy should have “accidental damage” included to cover this event.
Destroyed cookers; Christmas has a higher instance of damaged cookers, pans, and pots catching fire.
Spilled wine glasses; a common incident at this time of year. Damage can be to carpets or furniture, most insurers will cover this if “accidental damage” cover is included.
Losing jewellery; many insurers report festive claims occur when items are accidentally thrown out with discarded wrapping paper. The items included earrings and hearing aids.
Stay safe and have a peaceful, relaxing and happy Christmas.

How does Santa Claus get in to a home without a chimney?
You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town!
Yes, that’s right everyone…the countdown to the arrival of Santa Claus is winding down which means that now, more than ever, we must be on our absolute BEST behaviour!
As you deck the halls and hang your
mistletoe, you may be lucky enough to live in a newly built home without a fireplace and be wondering just how exactly Santa will be stopping in to drop off your presents.
Believing in the magic of home, especially around Christmas time, we simply had to find out the answer to this age old question.
So we went straight to our source in the North Pole, Patch the Elf, and asked “How does Santa Claus get onto a home without a chimney?” and we got the in-
side scoop.
The great news is that Santa will deliver to all the good boys and girls on Christmas Eve … even if they don’t have a chimney.
But how.....
The answer is simple… magic and a key! We are reliably informed that Santa Claus has a magic key that he uses to get into homes, apartments and townhouses without a chimney.
With a sprinkle of magic and a dash of cheer this key works one special night
of the year!
Quietly he enters as the children all sleep and lays down their presents without a peep.
In the blink of an eye he departs from the scene, but only for those who truly believe.

Barraduff lights up for Christmas
There was a fantastic festive atmosphere in Barraduff on Friday night as up to 70 locals turned out to light up the village for Christmas.
| By Michelle Crean
Local Garda Declan Leader managed to catch Santa so the boys and girls had a great time quizzing him about what he'll be bringing to them on Christmas night! Christmas carols added to the occasion as local school children sang their hearts out with music also by the very talented Rosie Healy.
Killarney Mayor Niall Kelleher did the honours and switched the lights on while Fr Lenihan blessed the Christmas memorial tree at the church. The event was organised by the local Tidy Towns group which has approximately 15 members. They have been doing it for five or six years pre-pandemic.
"We haven't had it in two years [due to COVID]," Stuart Kelly, Chairperson of the Tidy Towns group, told the Killarney Advertiser.
"Six years ago we decided to put a Christmas tree and lights up. Residents put up lights also. Kerry County Council and the Community Support Fund allowed us to get new lights this year. We have a memory tree at the church and hearts are €5 with proceeds go-
ing back into the village and we'll say a special memorial Mass after Christmas."
He added a huge thanks to the residents for their support as well as Fr Lenihan and their local shop keeper.
"Michael O'Donoghue Costcutter powers the tree and the church powers the memory tree," Stuart said.
He added that there's a fundraising table quiz on December 27 at 8pm sharp in John Dan's and everyone is welcome.

Council Arts Office launches new website
Kerry County Council Arts Office is delighted to announce the launch of their new arts website.
The Arts Office team worked closely with Kerry County Council’s IT Department to create a visually striking onestop place for everything associated with the arts in Kerry.
I get asked a lot about night creams. If you think you're too young or too old to use them, guess again.
The production of collagen, a super building block in the maintenance of skin, hair and nails, begins to decrease as early as 25.
Night creams contain active ingredients that can't be used during daylight hours as they react with the sun including Vitamin C, collagen, CoQ10, retinol, AHA's, glycolic acids, hyaluronic acid and many more.
Also, while you are sleeping your skin is actively working on renewal, repair, and regeneration. These ingredients in good night creams help this process eg they are high in antioxidants which actively repair damage to the skin barrier and raise their immunity.
You apply a night cream before you go to bed, and it works its magic while you sleep. During the day your skin is subject to environmental stressors like pollution and sun. At night there is no potential for skin damage so the skin can focus on repair and regeneration. A night cream helps speed up this process. Night time
is a restorative time for your skin.
Night creams also have anti-inflammatory agents which lessen the swelling and redness on the skin. They are deeply hydrating and help make the skin firmer and more elastic. In addition, they are usually deeply hydrating, providing a lot of moisture to the skin.
Night cream with collagen makes the skin firmer and more elastic, and it can smooth lines and wrinkles. It contains hydration from hyaluronic acid, which release hydration over serval hours and works better when sunscreen doesn't interfere. In the morning your skin will appear plump and nourished, soft and supple.
You may even find you wear less makeup as your complexion improves or that your make-up is going on better to your beautiful hydrated fresh face.
I recommend you try Sothys Renovate Night Cream to reveal visibly renewed skin which appears rested and younger in the morning.
For any questions or more information ask Jill on 064 6632966.
Members of the public will be able to see the latest information on Artist Residencies, the Sliabh Luachra Music Trail, Youth Arts, Festivals & Events, Film, Public & Visual Art, Creative Ireland, Cruinniú na nÓg and Culture Night, read arts publications and find out how to contact the Arts Office. Particularly of interest to artists will be the Forms & Funding section with details on how to apply for the Arts Act Grant and Artist Bursaries, and
the Arts Database which they can add their details to. The External Links section has over 75 helpful links to Government arts organisations, European arts organisations, national organisations representing each art form and arts venues. Links to the Arts Office’s social media and to sign up to the fortnightly e-newsletter will also be of benefit to everyone, in order to hear about upcoming events and funding opportunities, both from Kerry County Council and from national organisations.
Accessing the website is a lot easier, as it is now an independent website, so it no longer needs to be accessed via a drop down on the main Council’s website. The website is now live and can be accessed at arts.kerrycoco.ie.

Impressive Spa hoping to dethrone the champs
Last year’s beaten finalists have what it takes to defeat the Crokes, writes Eamonn Fitzgerald
I expect Spa to dethrone the title-holders Dr Crokes and capture the 2022 O’Donoghue Cup title in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday (2pm).
They gave it a great shot in last year’s final, but competition kingpins Dr Crokes ruled supreme.
Spa have been very impressive going alone in the County Championship with well-proven names in Kerry players Dan O’Donoghue and Dara Moynihan. Up front Evan Cronin, Mike Foley, David Spillane and Cian Tobin are all good score getters.
In contrast, Dr Crokes manager Brian McMahon’s options are drastically reduced with up to seven regular starters out with long-term injuries. The loss of valuable players such as Gavin White, Fionn Fitzgerald, John Payne, Tom Doyle, Brian
Fitzgerald and Mike Potts, weakens the team drastically.
Meanwhile, Micheál Burns has been out injured for over four months and only made a brief 15-minute appearance in the semi-final against Legion. Rising stars Cian McMahon and Neil O’Shea are also ruled out with injuries.
Midfield supremacy will have a big bearing on the outcome. Spa will choose from Liam Kearney, Mike McCarthy, and Ciarán Spillane, while Crokes have to depend on team captain Mark O’Shea and David Shaw.
The prediction is Spa to win with quite a bit to spare.
TIMING
Christmas week is an unsuitable time to play the most prestigious competition in
East Kerry. That and the vagaries of the winter weather militate against staging the final on Christmas week. The weather forecast for Sunday is not favourable by any means.
Incidentally, it remains to be seen how the Kerry players on both teams will adjust to much lower temperatures after returning on Saturday from sun-splashed Dubai and Mauritius to the cold reality of a December date in the Park.
The split season has tied the hands of the East Kerry Board, and that system will continue with minimal tweaking in 2023.
I have always admired the efficiency of the EKB, certainly by far the best in Kerry and that has been a crucial factor in the successes of its competitions and of the EKB teams in all grades.
For decades the O’Donoghue Cup final
was played in early September, well before the All-Ireland final. That may not be possible in the new fixture list but the EKB has control over competitions such as the Super League, a secondary competition that arouses little or no interest.
Traditionally, the North Kerry Board played its premier football final in late December, but even that board completed its premier final recently when Listowel denied Desmonds their three-in-a-row.
I am surprised that the EKB did not bring the O’Donoghue Cup final forward to facilitate those who will want to see the World Cup final at 3pm.
The East Kerry final will be streamed by Clubber.ie. The Man of Match award will be sponsored by Irish Drains.

Maes excels at World Cyclocross Championships
Richard, congratulations on your recent success. Can you tell me a bit about the competition you were taking part in?
Thanks Adam. Yeah, it was the World Championships for Cyclocross in Ipswich. I came fourth in the masters section. It was there last year as well and I came fifth, so I knew the course and I was able to train more specifically for it.
So, was the goal heading into this year’s competition to finish higher than fifth?
Yeah, I was hoping for that, but last year there were Covid implications as well. A couple of the big fellas from Belgium and Holland didn’t show up. They did show up this year so I wasn’t quite sure how it would go. But it went well on the day, thankfully.
Can you explain how the sport works?
It’s a cross between mountain biking and road; the bike looks like a road bike with mountain bike wheels. It’s done off-road and there’s a lot of running involved and lot of man-made obstacles like stairs that you have to run up and down. They bring in a couple of hundred tonnes of sand for the course and make you
go through it. Skilful riders can ride through it, others can’t and they just have sand in their shoes for the rest of the day. Some courses are hilly, some are flat.
As for the event, it's a one-hourrace that consists of a three-kilometre track. If a lap takes 10 minutes, they say you have six laps to do. They try to get it as close to the hour as possible.
It sounds pretty physical?
Yeah, it’s the hardest event you can do in terms of cycling. It’s the most demanding. My heartrate would be about 185 average for the hour. It’s the same pain as a 5k running race if you’re trying do that as fast as you can for 20 minutes, except this lasts an hour. It’s the same intensity. There’s a lot of high intensity gym training and weight training.
Tell me about this recent event. Did everything go to plan?
Everything went smoothly enough. Conditions were cold but it was bone dry. Normally we’d have a load of muck to deal with! It ended up being the fastest race of the year.
There were six of us together for the whole race, really, and then it split into three and three with two laps to go. It stayed that way until the end. There was only 13 seconds between first and fifth. It was tight racing all day. What’s next on the agenda?
The National Championships are on in Dundalk the second weekend of January and we’re finished then. It’d be nice to get a medal there. I was fourth last year so it would be good to go one better this time. After that we’ll be back into road training in March. I’ll be looking to do the Rás and all that craic again. No rest for the wicked!
How is the body holding up overall? Is training getting that bit harder with age?
Not yet! The recovery hasn’t slowed down that much thankfully but I’d say if I did stop for a while and tried to get back going, I’d feel it. I’m training 50 weeks of the year. I’ll try and not get fat for another while!

Kerry to host Ramblers in historic opening game
Kerry FC’s first ever game in the League of Ireland will be a Munster derby at home at Mounthawk Park in Tralee.
Earlier this week the league unveiled the fixture list for the upcoming 2023 season and newcomers Kerry have been handed an enticing home opener against Cork rivals Cobh Ramblers. The match will take place on Friday, February 17 at 7.45pm.
Ramblers, the club who famously sold Roy Keane to Nottingham Forest, endured a difficult year in 2022. They finished bottom of the nine-team league, seven points adrift of Athlone Town.
On paper it appears to be a decent opening round fixture for Kerry, although it will be difficult to assess their chances until they officially reveal their squad and manager ahead of their maiden voyage at this level.
“It’s extremely exciting to see Kerry FC on an official fixture list and it’s another milestone day in the club's history,” general manager Seán O’Keeffe said.
“Season tickets are selling extremely well and I would encourage anyone who hasn’t bought one yet to not delay to secure the best seat in the house for what will be a landmark day for Kerry FC. It is looking likely to be a complete sell-out.”
Season tickets can be purchased via the club’s official website kerryfc.com. Tickets will also be available on a game-bygame basis. These will become available in the weeks leading up to each individual match.
Elsewhere on the opening day of the First Division, recently relegated Finn Harps will travel to Galway, Longford Town play Athlone Town, Treaty United host Bray Wanderers, and Wexford take on last year’s runners-up, Waterford.
Bronze, silver and gold for judo girls
Last Saturday, five players from Killarney Judo Club travelled up to Dublin in icy conditions to take part in the main judo competition of the year: the All-Irelands. For many of the players, this was their first time competing at a higher level since 2019.
Liadh Forde competed brilliantly, winning all four of her fights to earn a gold medal. Muireann O'Brien also fought; well she won several fights and before taking home a silver medal. Meanwhile, Mairéad Bennett captured a bronze thanks in no small part to her exciting
throws. Unfortunately, Cian Forde and Tim Kelly, both of whom fought admirably, just missed out on medals this time. Special mention to Tadhg Kelly who was coaching on the day and drove many of the players to the competition.
The club is currently gearing up for a busy festive period with many players moving up the ranks in gradings. Many of the younger children are gradually getting closer to earning their yellow belts.
Killarney Judo Club will be taking a break over Christmas before returning the week of January 9.

| Messi feeling “strong” ahead of World Cup final
Another Lionel Messi masterclass propelled Argentina to victory over Croatia on Tuesday night and now the 35-yearold is ready for the biggest – and last –World Cup game of his career.
"I am very happy for finishing my journey in World Cups in a final, to play the last game in a final. That is really very gratifying," he said.
"Everything I lived in this World Cup has been emotional, seeing how much it has been enjoyed in Argentina.
"There are a lot of years from this year to the next one. I don't think I will be able to do that. To finish this way is brilliant." The PSG attacker was also keen to downplay supporters’ fears that he might be injured. He was seen testing out his thigh during the semi-final, but happily for Argentina there is no lingering problem.
"I feel really good. I feel strong and ready to play each game.”

Rudisha survives plane crash
in native Kenya
Two-time Olympic gold medalist David Rudisha survived a plane crash in his native Kenya last Saturday.
Rudisha and five others were leaving an event known as the Masai Olympics in Kimana when the small airplane they were on was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after take-off, according to Big Life, which was one of the organisers of the event.
“It happened very fast,” Rudisha told CNN. “We’re lucky we survived. There were just a few injuries, but most of us came out without any major injuries.”
Rudisha recently met Kerry footballer Stefan Okunbor, who was visiting Kenya
the Plant For The Planet Games.

A footballer once but
for 7.30pm in the Park. Travelling in the same car out of Dublin on a Friday afternoon without the luxury of a motorway; a four or five-hour journey was not the ideal preparation.
There is no shortage of sports books on offer and many will make their way into our stockings this Christmas.
Several sports personalities’ autobiographies are ghosted, but all too often star players commit to print far too soon after ending their glorious sporting careers. Invariably, these books are shallow, egotistical and a self-glorifing journey of self-delusion, providing no real insights into the person’s thoughts and values.
The hero’s achievements are well known but what does the biography tell us about the inner persona?
There are some great exceptions. I found the biographies of Kieran Donaghy and Philly McMahon well worth reading and hopefully some of this year’s Christmas crop will emerge as very worthwhile too. I have found one already and it is very much homegrown, well over 40 decades since the subject’s playing days. Mature reflec-
tion provides the necessary savvy.
INSIGHT
Donie O’Sullivan: A Footballer, Once, an autobiography penned with fellow Spa man Jimmy O’Sullivan Darcy, gives us a fine insight into the values and principles of an enduring GAA star.
Four All-Ireland titles with Kerry, one All-Ireland Club and three Kerry SFC titles in a row with East Kerry, Kerry’s first All-Star, nine O’Donoghue Cups and a plethora of other awards. That and more but you’ll be scratching your head to find these facts in this autobiography.
Jimmy Darcy is a sports columnist who provides a comprehensive and constructive honest analysis of the local and national sports scene. In this book he sets the context of the social and political life during which the ‘once footballer’ excelled.
I had the good fortune to play on teams with Donie and we were also in opposi-
tion in the very healthy Spa v Dr Crokes O’Donoghue Cup rivalry. He was a full-blooded competitor, tough as táithfhéileann, but fair and sporting. We travelled far and wide along with Mick Gleeson to play together most times, but not always. Donie gave sterling service to Dr Crokes in the early 1960s, winning three O’‘Donoghue Cups. When Spa got going once more, he quite rightly played with his home team, winning six more O’Donoghue Cups. He was the leading figure for Spa along with Pat Casey and Mick Gleeson, usually at the expense of the Crokes. The game plan was simple, direct, and successful. Donie boomed a 70-yard kick-out, Casey fetched cleanly and delivered quickly into Gleeson. Raise another flag. I recall the 1968 O’Donoghue Cup final fixed for a Friday night. Mick Gleeson and I were in the same workplace in Dublin and Donie was employed elsewhere in Dublin. The game was fixed
The friendly conversation kept us occupied until we took a four-minute sos to stretch our legs 14 miles from the Park, just 20 minutes to throw-in. I had the duty to mark Mick Gleeson, a huge challenge at the best of times. No quarter given or taken, friendships suspended for one hour. But with the shake hands at the final whistle, normal respectful relationships were renewed. Values.
PERSONAL VALUES
Darcy drove Donie around the Spa countryside and the latter supplied the commentary, facilitating the reader to see into the recollecting mind of footballer. The writer discovered the real personal values of faith, integrity, and respect of the footballer of fadó, fadó.
Footballer, is it? He readily admits that he couldn’t even make the Sem team. Why? because he was “too small”. Maybe so, but there was plenty of work to be done in the modest farm at Tiernaboul.
Killarney Advertiser sports columnist Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews the autobiography of his former Kerry teammate Donie O’Sullivan

a friend always
Cycling both ways on a high nelly was enough to take the teaspach off anyone. He was also a very keen student, a lifetime learner and teacher, which took him off to the USA on so many occasions, especially to San Diego. He studied there and lectured on Irish history, a subject dear to his heart, as is the Irish language. Significantly, his Ó Súilleabháin offspring have Irish names: Colm, Fionnuala, Eoin and Orna.
Forget the Kerry minors or U21s but look to Maynooth. That was the era of big numbers answering the call of a Higher Authority. Donie answered the call. He must have togged out there every day whatever the weather. He liked the structure of Maynooth, the self-discipline. “You studied, you slept, and you played sports.”
Friends in that seminary said that Donie practiced and practiced kicking, which in later life crowned him King in the Kingdom of dead-ball kickers. When I placed the ball on the edge of the square, his explosive contact was like a jet taking off and Mick O’Connell, his lifelong friend, knew exactly when and where to leap into the clouds.
Seánie O’Shea is a splendid long kicker but how would he have done with the old ball on a wet day? The weather was never an issue for Donie. The pitches at Maynooth were a small bit shorter than your regular pitch, but still, he could drive the kickout so far, bypassing all lines until it was safely grabbed at the other end by his cousin Bill Murphy. The latter became Bishop of Kerry and is still a keenly interested sports supporter.
The former could well have been a kicker with the New York Jets, who wanted him to join them. However, he felt life is for living and cherishing, even when it throws up so many challenges and disappointments. It wasn’t all plain sailing.
DISAPPOINTMENTS
Darcy listens for a response and the open confessions emerge. It wasn’t a winner all the way. Donie had disappointments go leor. Imagine having to listen to the 1962 All-Ireland final on the wireless because at that time clerical students were not allowed to play games outside of the college once they returned to Maynooth in September.
He won his first All-Ireland medal in 1962
and was not one bit sour about not being allowed play. He confided, prayed, and then made his own decision, as he did when he left the seminary some years later. To this day he has an eternally grateful grá for Maynooth and particularly for the lifelong friends he made in that era of his life.
More disappointments were to follow. He was dropped for the 1969 All-Ireland final, having played so well all the way to that final. One never got a reasoned explanation why. He was disappointed but never sulked. Like life, he just got on with it and held no grudges.
Think of the 1970 All-Ireland final. Kerry won, but he received a leg injury after 20 minutes. Still, he continued to play on until half-time. Looking at him hobble off eventually, I was disappointed that the lion-hearted Spa man would not be fit to join us in the county final one week later against Waterville. He had to sit it out for the three-in-a row. But nothing compared to the biggest challenge of all, life and death staring you in the face, this time off the field. Eoin, his son, appeared to have no chance of surviving and “we were thinking and then
discussing when the life support would be unplugged”. Aggressive lymphoma on a 10-year-old is hard to take. Miraculously, Eoin survived and returned to full health.
Also, for six years, Donie was the primary carer for his beloved wife Dr Áine, who was suffering from dementia. His family said he never once complained, resilient and reliable as ever. She passed away in April 2021.
Others will count his medals and a plethora of awards, but the Donie I know values friends most of all. That thread runs right through the autobiography. The friendships forged on the sporting fields endured forever and when he hears that a former player, friend or foe, was experiencing health issue, the once footballer - but always friend - lifted the phone and visited his former teammate or rival player.
This book is well worth reading to encounter the inner persona of a very public footballer who knows where he came from and cherishes his beloved Spa with no hint of éirí in airde. He knows that life is thuas seal, thíos seal.
Donie is fíor dhílis don Ghaeilge i gcónaí, agus ritheann liricí an Ríordánaigh liom. The man from just over the county bounds offers this nugget.
“Is níl laistigh d’aon daoiorse, Ach saoirse ón daoirse sin.”

ROBBIE O’BRIEN: The Club extends its sympathies to the family of Robert (Robbie) O’Brien who passed away last weekend. While the involvement of Robbie's family in the club today is well known, what may not be common knowledge is that Robbie himself was an outstanding footballer for the club in his day. He won an East Kerry Minor title beating Rathmore in the final in 1958 and in the very same year he lined out for the senior team in the O’Donoghue Cup final against town rivals Dr Crokes. He established himself on the senior team thereafter and played a starring role in the 1960 County Championship run which culminated in a defeat to Feale Rangers. Unfortunately a bad accident put pay to his football career but he remained a Legion man at heart. Having attended and played football also at St Brendan’s College he worked in the family building business until he decided to train as a teacher. He then found himself back at his alma mater after spells in Dublin and Castleisland, and taught at the famed school until his retirement. A number of club mem-
bers would have known Robbie as Mr O'Brien in the Sem but what always shone through was the duty of care he gave to every student. He also was involved in training numerous of the colleges football teams, most notably the 1986 Corn Uí Mhuirí title. It was obvious in many of the tributes paid to him that he was held in very esteem. Never a man to rest on his laurels he went down the College road again in later life and graduated with a degree in law the same day as his daughter Lara.
