Becoming a ‘Nanny State’ caused by a ball of smoke

M

INISTER FOR Health, James O’ Reilly has announced that he is considering bringing in legislation to ban smoking in cars with children in them. I was astounded at how angry smokers were on a Joe Duffy programme. They said they could smoke if they liked because it was in their own car, giving little consideration to children and other passengers. Many are of the opinion that we are becoming a ‘Police State’, but I believe we are becoming a ‘Nanny State’. Think of all the legislation that has come into being simply because so many are not prepared to be responsible. Everybody knows that

safety belts save lives and still drivers and passengers don’t always belt up. Speeding kills, yet drivers are prepared to break speed limits and endanger other people’s lives. How often have you heard people moaning when they are caught speeding? Drink driving is a criminal offence, yet people are still being caught. It makes you wonder what kind of mindset these people have. Drink drivers cause accidents that kill and maim. They know they will be put off the road and given a hefty fine, but still drink and drive. Smoking causes cancer and endangers the health of passive smokers. Yet smokers insisted on puffing until the smoking ban. It makes you wonder why

anybody would want to inflict smoke on children. Do you remember the outcry from publicans and smokers when the laws were passed? There was little thought for people working in public places. People are entitled to smoke but they are not entitled to risk the health of others. Legislation had to be brought in for all of the above to protect people from themselves. If citizens took responsibility for doing the right thing, none of this legislation would have been necessary. It would be wonderful if legislation cured problems but people have to be policed into doing the right thing so we are definitely becoming a ‘Nanny State’.

REPORTER WISH LIST THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS... Fijit Friends

Extreme curls

IF you haven’t heard of ‘Fijit Friends’ get ready to be bombarded between now and Christmas. These little guys are predicted to be the most wanted toy for Christmas 2011. ‘Fijit Friends’ are interactive toys that chat with you and recognize over 30 keywords and respond with over 150 phrases. They also love to dance. Play any music and they will groove to the beat with their hilariously fidgety bodies. They are squishy, soft and eager to make you laugh! Available in Argos and all good toy shops.

These ‘Enrapture Extremity Heated Rollers’ are perfect for people who like their hair to have luscious body, extreme curls, soft waves or lift at the roots. Ready to use in just two minutes, they employ duo heat technology. The velvety roller has a core system that slowly emits heat when held in the hand, then produces a higher temperature when they are placed in the hair. The butterfly clips are designed to release

Bullets 4 Peace heat using two inner plates, meaning even long, thick hair can be easily styled. Available from Argos.

BULLETS are generally symbols of chaos and destruction. When a bullet is fired the tip flies towards the target and the casing falls to the ground. Manufacturers reload these casings with live ammunition. ‘Bullets4Peace’ intercepts this vicious circle by transforming the bullet casings into stylish pendants ensuring they will never find their way back to war zones. To celebrate the launch of their new Facebook page they are giving away two of their beautiful pendants. Just log on ‘like’ and share the page ‘Bullets4Peace UK & Ireland’ to be in with a chance to win.

A dream duet! ‘THE Mountain Buggy Duet’ is the world’s slimmest full function all-terrain buggy. Incredibly, the Duet is only 59cm wide, which is narrower than many single strollers, but can accommodate two kids from birth up to four years old. The Duet can accommodate two car seats, two carrycots or any combination of each with a single click attachment. It also folds easily and neatly and weighing just 13kg is one of the lightest twin strollers around. It has just become available in Ireland and is €569 from www. cleverclogs.ie.

Kind to skin THE new Imperial Leather SkinKind range dispells the myth that those with sensitive skin need to keep fragranced beauty products at arm’s length. The products use a careful choice of ingredients to minimise the chance of irritating sensitive skin. ‘Enrich’ is designed to hydrate your skin while you wash. Containing 25% moisturisers, skin is left touchably soft. It also leaves a vibrant scent of refreshing fruity notes with bursts of lime blossom. Nourish is packed with triple moisturising properties that feed skin through the harsher winter weather. Opulent fragrance notes of white rose and peony are paired with the longlasting scent of cedar wood and white musk.

Blue Venom THE lip plumper everyone’s been talking about is now available online. ‘DuWop Blue Venom’ has the same plumping formula as classic ‘Lip Venom’ but with a slight blue tint that makes your teeth appear whiter. A blend of essential oils including cinnamon, wintergreen, and ginger causes blood to rush to the surface of the lips, flushing and swelling them slightly. The gloss also includes jojoba and avocado oil that moisturise and give the lips intense shine. You end up with a glossy pout that cannot be achieved by wearing ordinary lip gloss, with the whitest teeth about. Available at www. simplebeauty.co.uk.

Theatre of the week ‘THE Stone’, a musical that centres around the themes of power, money, greed, family, death, love and witchcraft, opens at The Watergate Theatre tonight (Wednesday) and runs until Saturday. It tells the story of a rich woman who will do just about anything to stay rich and a bishop who

will stop at nothing in his aim to destroy her. But who will be caught in the middle of the battle; who will win and who will suffer?   Set against the backdrop of Kilkenny City with its stunning medieval architecture, the musical will also be a window into the life of people during a bygone era.

Music and lyrics are by Jason Paul Ryan and Tom Bolger. Alice Kyteler will be played by Rebecca Murphy, her servant Petronella de Meath by Sarah Brennan and Bishop Richard Le Drede by Tony Murray. The story is based on the novel ‘The Stone’ by Claire Nolan.

Book of the week IT was no country for young men. Or women... Unemployment, emigration and do-it-yourself hair colour kits were once again a fact of life. Taxes were on the up, the IMF were on the way and there was a cash for gold outlet in Foxrock. The signs for recovery were good - for me, at least. I was the CEO of

one of the few businesses turning a profit - a shredding company helping to dispose of the Celtic Tiger’s dirty little secrets. And I was getting plenty of love action - as the boy-toy of an attractive 60 year old. NAMA Mia! By Ross O’Carroll Kelly will leave you with pains in your sides from laughing.

Product of the week BRING a few tasty shots of espresso with you to work with this ‘Camera Lens Mug’. Designed to look and feel just like a regular camera lens, this brilliant insulated travel mug is perfect for bringing the world into focus first thing in the morning.  While you’re out and about, the flared lens-cap lid stops anything

from falling into your cuppa and keeps the contents hot. Once you’ve reached your destination, this handy feature also doubles as a coaster or a biscuit holder. Now hold that smile... perfect!  Just €18 + delivery from www. firebox.com.

Pub of the week SHIRLEY’S Book Club meets the first Thursday of every month in Shirley’s of Kells and they are looking for new members. Next meeting is on tomorrow (Thursday), at 8.30pm. All are welcome. Shirleys also host circuit training classes, a knitting group and recently opened a new darts arena called ‘The Board Room’. The pub is known far and wide from its starring role in ‘The

Riordans’. It was the pub of choice for Irish playwright and screenwriter Wesley Burrowes when he lived in Kells. In fact, he is reputed to have derived much inspiration for the characters in his soap opera from observing the interactions of local people in the pub. Much of that charm is still alive in Shirley’s today. The pub also holds regular entertainment with pub quizzes, trad music sessions and hypnotist/comedy nights. Sports fans are also well looked after with all major sporting events shown.

Exhibition of the week ‘Modern Languages’ that runs at the national Craft Gallery, Kilkenny from October 21 to January 2012 offers the contemporary perspectives of five international artists and designers on the familiar traditions of Irish craft Nao Matsunaga, Laura Mays, Deirdre Nelson, Ciara Phillips and Barbara Ridland have sought to reinterpret the

sometimes familiar, sometimes forgotten skills of Ireland’s craft tradition. In doing so they uncover fresh significance and meaning, offering new insights into the Irish vernacular. Curator Katy West invited five artists with very different relationships with Ireland, to re-imagine Irish craft traditions in the 21st century.

From the precision and planning that fashions a chair to the labour of industrial weaving or cottage industry knitting, these traditions still remain, but often only as nostalgic reminders of our past - they have been replaced by methods of mass production. This exhibition revisits those traditions and examines them in a contemporary light.
