He tells how in his teens he met up with Mick Jagger and

FILM The Guard Director John Michael McDonagh

A

n Irish film debut from the brother of Martin McDonagh who directed ‘In Bruges’ this shares many of the same winning elements most especially a command performance from our greatest living actor- Brendan Gleeson. Here he plays Sergeant Gerry Boyle who distracts himself from the tedium of small town policing by visiting high class prostitutes or caring for his dying mother. A rookie Aidan comes into his world to spoil his laissez faire attitude but he is soon murdered by ruthless drug dealers. This leads to the arrival of Wendell Everett(Don Cheadle) an Afro-American FBI which makes for much anti-PC ribbing and mismatched buddy cop humor. There is some fine writing in the script with much of pleasure coming from the salty dialogue- “I’m Irish, racism is part of my culture”. Also the scene construction maximizes the absurdity of the situation with the comedy coming from the characters rather than cheap gags. There is some lovely undercutting of stereotypes too with the criminals for example spending more time

philosophizing than murdering. All of this is held together by Gleeson who is having an absolute blast in playing this multifaceted storm of a man. He captures all his bluster and vunerabilty in a part that seems tailor made for him as much as the tarnished buttons on his uniform. Don Cheadle shows himself to be an excellent foil to Gleeson and gets some of the best lines- “I can’t tell if you’re really motherfucking dumb or really motherfucking smart”. There is some fine support too with Liam Cunningham as the criminal overlord recalling Ralph Fienne’s monster that dominated “In Bruges.” That is perhaps the problem with this film- it is similar to others that are a tad superior. If you haven’t seen ‘Perrier’s Bounty’ “I Went Down’ or McDonagh’s brother’s film you will think it a masterpiece. However in comparison it merely holds it’s own without adding much to the mix. If however you look elsewhere in the Omniplex for something approaching a decent night’s entertainment this is the most surefire bet. Don’t be put off by it’s nationality ,as Irish people rarely support their own films, this is a witty gem that you will relate to. If the image of Brendan Gleeson dressed as a guard scratching his balls from STDs makes you laugh then go see this. - DARRAGH BYRNE
