Bulldogs try to bounce back, to host Bullard By MITCH LUCAS sports@kilgorenewsherald.com

After losing a 28-point lead, then the game, to Center, the Kilgore High School Bulldogs are picking themselves up this week and preparing to finish the regular season. Who’s the unlucky group that gets to come to town after Kilgore’s players have been hearing all week about that upset to Center? That would be Bullard, who has faint hope of making the playoffs with a win over the Ragin’ Red. Kilgore (6-3 overall, 3-2 in District 9-4A, Division I) will host the district rival Panthers (3-6 overall, 2-3 in district) Friday night here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is the traditional 7:30 p.m. Hear the Ragin’ Red Broadcasting team call the game live on KDOK 105.3-FM and online at kdokradio.com. See BULLDOGS, page 2

KNOCK IT DOWN! -- Nick Hooper (22) and Isaiah Smith (33) of Kilgore defend a pass against Center last weekend. The Bulldogs (6-3 overall, 3-2 in District 9-4A, Division I) will host Bullard (3-6, 2-3) in the regular season finale this Friday.

Here’s the way things break down: No one can catch Carthage, which hasn’t lost a district game. The defending state champions are going to capture the district crown. And Kilgore, by virtue of its win over Henderson, holds the tiebreaker with the Lions – Henderson is also 3-2 in the district, having lost to Carthage and KHS. So if the Ragin’ Red beats Bullard, Kilgore will go into the 4A DI playoffs as the runner-up to Center, the second-place team from the district. Henderson would be the third seed as long as it beats Palestine. Center would be the fourth and final seed. And that’s the simple scenario. Bullard, though, would love to overturn the apple cart with a win over Kilgore. The Panthers haven’t won since Oct. 20, a win over Chapel Hill. That’s because they’ve faced Carthage and Henderson in back-to-back weeks. Bullard has undergone some changes in the last year. Their new head coach is Scott Callaway, former head coach at both Big Sandy and Gladewater, and more recently, an offensive coordinator at Mesquite. The Panthers love to pass the ball, and senior quarterback Cleet Bowman can certainly do it. He’s already thrown for over 2,000 yards, 21 touchdowns and See KILGORE, page 3

TEN SPOT -- Kilgore’s Ja’Vorie hamilton (10) tries to run through a tackle, as offensive line teammates Logan Greenberg (63) and Coby Slayter (52) try to free him up. Center did win the game, but could never stop Kilgore’s offense. The Bulldogs stopped themselves, though, with four lost fumbles. Kilgore has ran for over 3,300 yards this season, but has lost 11 fumbles.

KILGORE and just four interceptions. Henderson put a good beat-down on the Panthers, with 331 passing yards and a 27-7 halftime lead. Kilgore has only faced Bullard in football on three previous occasions, and has never lost: the Bulldogs won the first meeting, 27-14, back in 2012; Kilgore won again, 49-7, in the rematch in 2013; and last year, the Bulldogs got a 35-13 win a year ago. Kilgore would probably do just as well to forget the loss at Center. The Bulldogs did go up 28-0; watched Center get two quick, long-distance touchdown passes from Jayden Hicks to Jaterius Evans; and scored first in the second half, only to turn the ball over on four straight possessions. Kilgore’s defense had to defend a short field, and a Center win was the ultimate result. That’s yesterday. The Ragin’ Red can only worry about what it can control, and Kilgore still controls its own destiny. The Bulldogs’ offense starts up front with a solid offensive line: Austin Adams, McKinnon White, Coby Slayter, Braden Grush, Logan Greenberg, C.J. Brown, and others all have helped the offense roll up 3,319 rushing yards this season. Kilgore’s running game is just brutal on the opponent, enough that the Bulldogs really do not put the ball in the air that much at all. Quarterback Patrick “Buddy” Jackson, in his senior season, is 33-of67 for 608 yards, eight touchdowns and just one interception all year. Jackson is a threat with his running ability, no question. He didn’t score last week at Center. But on the season, he’s ran for 770 yards on 73 carries, and eight scores. Briant Mumphrey has 924 yards and 13 touchdowns on 86 carries, and Ja’Vorie Hamilton has 754 on 95 carries, with eight touchdowns. Nick Hooper (397 yards, three touchdowns) is a threat out of the backfield, too, and so is Jaiden Zackery (344 yards, two scores). Daniel Sifford and Michael French get playing time at fullback. Jackson has some targets, chief among them Oklahoma State verbal commit Jonathan Shepherd, who missed last week’s game with an injury but currently has 13 catches,

THE BUCK STOPS HERE -- Kilgore’s Isaiah Smith (33) wraps up Center tailback Marques Hall (7). Kilgore’s defense found itself under the gun last week with Center’s passing game, and this week, with the Bullard Panthers coming to town and featuring a quarterback that’s passed for over 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns, it’ll be another challenge.

for 356 yards and five touchdowns. Deiontrae Wheat, who doubles as a defensive back, has seven catches for 87 yards and a score, and Sifford and Mumphrey have also each caught a touchdown pass. Kilgore is in pretty good hands if it comes time for an extra point or field goal. Elivan Torres went 5-of5 last week in extra points and is 29of-31 this season. He’s also 3-of-5

in field goals. His brother, Elian, is Kilgore’s punter and averages right at 38 yards per punt. Elian is also is a mean placekicker – he’s 10-of-11 in extra points. Gus Witt is the holder for kicks and extra points, and also has punted this season (33-yard average). The Bulldogs’ defense did allow a 300-yard passer last week (Hicks), but will try to get back to normal

this Friday. Kilgore has allowed only 1,746 passing yards in all nine games this year, and 1,718 rushing yards. Kilgore has three defenders – Nesba Brown, Sebastian Mumphrey and Damien Parker – each over 90 tackles; Brown leads with 114; Mumphrey has 109; and Parker, 93. Mumphrey leads the team with

five tackles for loss; Demorrea Richardson and Octavian McKee, both along the defensive line, each have four. Richardson’s eight sacks lead the team; Deundre Blanton and McKee each have three, and Mumphrey has two. Richardson also has 22 quarterback hurries. Kilgore has 11 turnovers this year: seven interceptions and four fumble recoveries.

WHAT'S CAUSIN' ALL THIS? BY MITCH LUCAS

Q: You guys play ‘D’ in the Big 12? A: What’s a ‘D?’ I holler, kick, scream and throw a general fit about this every football season, and I’m going to do it again now, but I’m going to scale it back a bit. What’s the deal with the Big 12 Conference and defense pretty much not mattering? One of the games I watched last week was Oklahoma-Oklahoma State. Bedlam, it’s called, and it normally is just that. This time, for the most part, the bedlam that occurred was when the defensive players for each team tried to think, apparently, or tried to stop someone – emphasis there on the word, “tried. The game was tied at the half, AT 38. The two quarterbacks combined for 90 PASS ATTEMPTS. OU quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for 598 total yards (!), five touchdowns and two picks. And Mason Rudolph just about matched him – he threw for 448 yards, five scores and two picks. And if that’s not enough to make you shudder, you should’ve seen some of the attempts at “tackling. To be fair, those two players are both atop the NCAA’s yardage leaders, and both are in the conversation for the Heisman. They’re both very, very good players. It’s just a shame we’re not see-

ing how they’d fare against REAL defenses. There’s not a very good defense in the entire Big 12, but at least Texas is in the NCAA’s top 50 (number 48, of 130 NCAA Division I programs). They give up 368 yards and 21.3 points a game. The next Big 12 defense doesn’t check in until 77th (that’s Oklahoma State; you can count me surprised). OU is 83rd. The Cowboys allow 28 points and 406 yards per game; OU gives up 28 points and 413 LUCAS yards per. Texas Tech (107th), West Virginia (109th) and Baylor (120th) are all north of 30 points and 445 yards a game. It’s shameful. And if we want basketball, we’ll go inside. The picks list The picks have tightened up, as you can see on page 5. I’m about completely out of it, as are my youngest, Ashtyn, and Mark Fried. There’s a good three-way battle going for first place right now – Jacob had a bad week last week (we all did) but still leads with a 109-44 overall record. Teresa Leigh and Dennis Jacobs are

both just two picks back. Game Time Weekly comes out every Wednesday until the Kilgore High School football season is over, lose or win out. So we don’t really know how long we’ll have. Pick a favorite and cheer them on. Let’s move on to this week’s games.

HIGH SCHOOL GAMES

Bullard at Kilgore: Just when I was about to rename the “District of Doom to the “District of Two (Kilgore and Carthage), Center slips up on Kilgore and pulls the upset. The numbers weren’t pretty for the Bulldogs after the first quarter, and I’m sure there was a lot of head-scratching going on in the stands, and out in radio-land. Let me assure you: that’s the biggest comeback I’ve ever seen against a Kilgore team. A.) I don’t think we’ll ever see anything like that again, and B.) I’d hate to be Bullard this week. Sabine at Hughes Springs: There was some talk this week that the Cardinals, who haven’t won in district yet, had an outside shot of making the playoffs with a win at Hughes Springs Friday night. I talked with Sabine coach Rex Sharp, and he shot those rumors down. But he did commend his players on improving this year,

and assured me there would be important games coming soon in Sabine’s future. And I believe him. Wortham at Overton: Neither of these teams will be going to the playoffs, either, and I’m sure Overton is counting the hours to season’s end. I know it’s been a hard one, especially after winning eight games a year ago. But this senior class is still a talented group in a lot of sports, and they’ll bounce back. They’re all winners; they’ve just had a rough season. Beckville at West Rusk: First five games, all wins, for Beckville: 46 points a game. Last four games, all losses for Beckville: 14 points a game. West Rusk has allowed 1,200 yards for the entire season, and the Raiders are coming off their only loss so far this season. Bearcats, it could be a long night. I’m just sayin’. Palestine at Henderson: I was impressed with Palestine’s offense back when Kilgore opened the District 9-4A, DI schedule several weeks ago. Henderson quarterback Trae Hall is back, and passed for over 300 yards and a few touchdowns last week in a win over Bullard. With Hall back in the lineup, I like Henderson to fend off the upset.

COLLEGE GAMES

Kansas at Texas: I’m sure by now the Jayhawks are wondering if they can just forego the last few weeks of the season and move on to basketball, which is pretty much all their fans care about. New Mexico at Texas A&M: I’ve heard rumblings this week that the seat under A&M coach Kevin Sumlin got hotter after the Aggies didn’t really compete at all with Auburn, surprisingly. They’ll beat New Mexico handily, but it may not change that. TCU at Oklahoma: Most people are in agreement that this is the game of the week, at least. A loss for either team would be their second, and could be devastating. Remember: the Big 12 has re-instated its championship game, and there’s no divisions. The top two teams will meet again in December. We’re guaranteed a rematch – of some game. Texas Tech vs. Baylor (at AT&T Stadium): Baylor, congratulations for beating Kansas last week. The Bears might give Tech a run for its money, but the Red Raiders should hang on for the win in a matchup of two of the worst defenses in the nation. Oklahoma State at Iowa State: Iowa State had upset Oklahoma, Texas Tech and TCU this season before West Virginia popped the Cyclones’ bubble a week ago. I think Iowa State has pulled its last upset of the season. Notre Dame at Miami: This one was huge in my teenage years in the mid-late 1980s. You know: Canes vs. Irish, Catholics vs. Convicts. Jimmy Johnson vs. Lou Holtz. Winner of this one gets to stay in the top 10; loser gets to wait and see who the playoff teams are. I hope to make time Saturday night to watch this one.

finishes Rare defeat should have WR focused LC season vs. Raiders will host Beckville Friday in regular season finale; playoffs next week By MITCH LUCAS sports@kilgorenewsherald.com

The West Rusk Raiders’ aura of invincibility might not be in place any longer – no team is invincible, anyway – but the Raiders are still there in District 9-3A, Division II, still primed for a long playoff run, and maybe more. The road took a detour last week with an unexpected 32-31 loss at Elysian Fields. That is, after all, why they call them upsets. West Rusk (7-1) will try to refocus, as they host Beckville (5-4) this Friday night. There is this mess, caused by the Raiders’ loss: West Rusk, Elysian Fields and Waskom are each 4-1 in district play. West Rusk beat Waskom, but lost to EF; EF beat West Rusk, but lost to Waskom; and Waskom beat EF, but, as mentioned, lost at West Rusk. In short, it’s a mess. Through the first five weeks of the season, with the Raiders blasting people and Beckville doing some blasting of its own, this game looked to be a big one. But the Bearcats couldn’t live up to their end. Beckville began the season 5-0, and

has now lost four straight. After beating Troup to begin district play, Beckville stumbled, 8-6, in a low-scoring game at Harleton. Losses to Arp (20-10) and Waskom (55-13) followed, and then the fourth one came two weeks ago, at home against Elysian Fields (49-28). The Bearcats averaged 46 points a game in their five wins, and have averaged just 14 in their losses. Beckville is likely going to see a mad bunch of Raiders upon the Bearcats’ arrival in New London Friday afternoon. Elysian Fields probably surprised many in its own crowd a week ago with a 25-7 first-half lead over the Raiders before West Rusk came charging back. Quarterback L.J. Harper scored on a 1-yard run and then Dylan Walker scored on an interception return for a touchdown, bringing the Raiders back within a score, 25-19, in the third quarter. EF scored again midway through the third and West Rusk hit for two more touchdowns – but a two-point conversion on the Raiders’ last score in the fourth quarter was stopped by the Yellow

Jackets, who held on for the upset. Even in defeat, the Raiders’ offense was good, just not great. Harper went 12-of-32 for 121 yards, two scores and two interceptions, and also the run for the score. Ladarron Jones led all Raiders with 98 yards rushing – West Rusk as a team had 183 yards on the ground. Walker and D.J. Hart each had three catches and each for a score. Six different Raiders caught passes from Harper. West Rusk’s defense did have three interceptions – Walker, Talon Winings and Diego Molina each had one – but the normally-stingy Raiders’ defense allowed EF quarterback Garrett McIntosh to throw for 317 yards and three scores. Even after that battle with the Yellow Jackets, the Raiders still have allowed only 432 rushing yards and 874 passing yards in eight games this season, 1,306 total yards. Until the loss to Elysian Fields, of course, the Raiders had not allowed a single point to a district opponent. The three-way district tie will somehow be sorted out. In addition to West Rusk’s game against Beckville, Waskom visits Harleton and EF visits Troup.

A loss on a four-hour trip to High Island cost the Leverett’s Chapel six-man Lions a shot at the playoffs, but the Lions do plan to finish strong, coach Andy Bates said. The Lions (6-3) will host Apple Springs (4-5) this Friday night at 7:30. It’ll be the season finale for both teams – UIL six-man playoffs only take the top two teams from each district, instead of the top four, like in traditional football. It’s a shame, because the Lions will only have two district losses (at Union Grove and at High Island). The trip to High Island ended with a 63-6 LC loss. “Mistakes and penalties in the first half killed us, Bates said, “and we ran out of gas in the second half. Dawson Blear’s 12-yard pass to Hector Contreras was the Lions’ only score.

Playoff hopes are gone, but Sabine hopes for strong finish By MITCH LUCAS sports@kilgorenewsherald.com

There are several playoff scenarios for District 8-3A, Division I going into this weekend’s regular season finales. Unfortunately, none of them involve the Sabine Cardinals. Sabine (2-7 overall) will finish its regu-

lar season at Hughes Springs Friday night, at 7:30. The Cardinals haven’t missed the playoffs since 2013 – that’s three straight seasons. But this year, the losses mounted in district play, and the Cardinals just don’t have the wins needed to go. They haven’t won since the district schedule began. Hughes Springs, though, is 7-2, and very much in the midst of the playoff picture,

which also includes White Oak, Jefferson, and Redwater. The Mustangs lost their first two district games, but bounced back the last two weeks to blast New Boston, then ease by Redwater. Hughes Springs has came back quite well from last year’s 1-4 district record. Sabine, with first-year coach Rex Sharp at the helm, started off the season with a fair-

ly-difficult non-district schedule that only got more diifficult in district. Sharp acknowledged the disappointment in missing the playoffs, but is already gearing for a better 2018 season. “Our kids have bought in,” Sharp said, “and we are going to do some great things in the future.”

WILL HE OR WON’T HE? -- The watch is on yet again this week to see if Dallas will have running back Ezekiel Elliott (21, above) in its lineup, or if he’ll be suspended.

tailback Ezekiel Elliott will be in the line-up this week? The Atlanta Falcons, meanwhile, who played in the Super Bowl a year ago, have fallen completely off the map. They’re 4-4, and two games behind the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South. Both these teams need a win badly; the Falcons are trying to keep up with the Saints, and the Cowboys are trying to keep up with the Philadelphia Eagles (8-1) in the NFC East. Atlanta has been cold lately, but something tells me they come alive here, and eke – not Zeke, but eke – out a win. Houston at L.A. Rams: I don’t think I’d be a better quarterback than Tom Savage played last week

for the Texans. But I do think I could try. That was horrendous. I guess I was wrong about the Rams. They’ve been the doormat of the NFC West, it seems, since Kurt Warner retired, and that was long enough ago that he’s in the hall of fame now. But these Rams look for real. Let’s see how they do down the stretch because four of their six wins have been over teams that currently have losing records. New Orleans at Buffalo: For the last three seasons, the Saints have been dreadful on defense. Now, they’re giving up just 19 points and 210 passing yards a game. Cincinnati at Tennessee: With injuries to Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck and to Houston’s

DeShaun Watson, Tennessee ought to be making a run at the AFC South title. They can’t do it if they’re going to lose to Cincinnati, an underachiever year-in and year-out. New England at Denver: Denver coach Vance Joseph has a problem of dynamics: he has one of the league’s most competitive defenses, but his offense can’t seem to move the ball, let alone score. Not good with the Patriots coming to town. Miami at Carolina (Monday): If the Panthers play every game like the one they just finished, a win over Atlanta with a year-high in rushing yards, they’d be difficult to stop. Carolina wins.

MUSTANGS FINISH SEASON AT HOME FRIDAY Photos by RONNIE SARTORS

The 2017 football season hasn’t been a lot to write home about for the Overton High School Mustangs, but here are a couple of scenes from last Friday’s game at Tenaha, courtesy of News Herald photographer Ronnie Sartors. At right: Hudson Rodgers (22) fights for yards. Below: Luke Osburn is in the act of catching that pass for a 42-yard touchdown. Overton (0-9) will finish the season at home this Friday night against Wortham, a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Coach Chester Roy Stadium. Wortham (4-5) won’t be going to the playoffs, either: the Bulldogs went 3-1 in non-district play, but haven’t won a game since.
