Pregnancy and parenthood is a time of great change, and for some the challenges can be overwhelming. Anxiety and depression affects more than one in seven new mums and up to one in 10 new dads in Australia, with many parents experiencing anxiety and depression at the same time. Some common signs and symptoms include crying for no reason, difficulty with attention and focus, feeling constantly sad or low, losing interest in the normal things that bring joy (such as spending time with friends or your partner), panic attacks, persistent worry (often focussed on the health of the baby), sudden mood swings and withdrawal from friends and family. It is important to recognise these signs and symptoms and, as a general rule, if problems persist for more than two weeks, it’s important to see a health professional.

It takes courage and honesty to seek help, and the longer the problems last, the worse things can get. Asking for help is the first and most difficult step. Confiding in your partner or close friend can be a good start. It’s important to also speak with a health professional, like a Child Health Nurse, counsellor, GP or psychologist. Finding time for self-care is especially important for new mums and dads. Don’t underestimate the significant contribution that diet, exercise and sleep can have on your mental wellbeing. Recovery often involves more than one kind of approach, and research has led to advances in new drug-free treatments for anxiety and depression, such as targeted brain-stimulation and brain-training therapies. The Perth Brain Centre has been helping new mums and dads with anxiety and depression for over 10 years. All treatment programs are personalised using special brain imaging and delivered by a team of experienced, caring and qualified healthcare practitioners. For more information, call 6500 3277 or visit perthbraincentre.com.au

ooking to raise awareness and much needed funds, Down Syndrome WA released their 2018 Playgroup Calendar last year. It proved to be a huge success, raising over $5,000. Best of all, the bright, smiling faces of the playgroup kids have melted many hearts across Perth and beyond. The 2019 calendar is set to be even bigger and better, featuring 32 of DSWA’s best and brightest. DSWA was formed in 1986 by a small group of parents with a common goal, to support people with Down syndrome in living their best possible lives. Today DSWA serves a statewide population of over 1300 people with Down Syndrome, as well as their families and support networks. One of DSWA’s fastest growing programs is the Developmental Playgroup. A weekly program that runs across the Metropolitan and South Metropolitan areas. The playgroup caters for babies and children aged 0 to 5 years old and activities are therapy-based and tailored

especially for those attending on the day. The sessions are also an opportunity for parents to get to know each other and form long-lasting friendships and support networks. Calendars are $20 each and can be purchased online at dsawa.asn.au/store. For bulk orders, or if you would like to sell the calendars from your business, please contact the DSWA on 9368 4002 or email admin@downsyndromewa.org.au

Play-based learning is the new priority

T

he WA Education Department acknowledged in September that past teaching styles have been too rigid for younger students, placing them under unnecessary stress. To ease this pressure, schools have been encouraged to make play-based learning a priority for 2019. Goodstart Early Learning has always understood the importance of learning through play. Allowing children to explore, discover, imagine and have fun, leads to a rich learning experience and a lifelong love of learning.

Swimming made fun

O

lympic gold medallist Bill Kirby’s love of swimming was instilled in him by his first coach, Graeme Williams. With this mentor-student relationship in mind, Bill has built a swim school that aims to engage and inspire young swimmers. The team at Kirby Swim are passionate about making swimming fun, and working in partnership with parents to get the most out of their students. And the result is confident kids that try harder, progress faster and love their swimming lessons. In Western Australia, families are constantly around the water, at the beach, in backyard pools and in boats. Swimming as a form of exercise and general fitness can be enjoyed for a lifetime – and being a

Mathematics can be a game By Clive Kelly, MAWA

I

t’s easy to maintain children’s mathematics skills over the holidays, without the pain of drills and homework.

In the car, you can challenge your children to add the numbers on car number plates. The first to add to 50 (or more) wins the round. Then change up the target number – 100, 20, 75. This will keep them occupied for a few minutes and boost their number skills. You can also ask them if they can see number plates where the total of the digits is 10 or 20. When playing card games, have the kids add the totals of the cards in their hand. Explore geometry by identifying the shapes in buildings, the supermarket and the surrounding environment. You can even try drawing pictures and patterns to create works of art. Remember to make it fun and enjoy the games. For more ways to foster a love of math, visit mawainc.org.au
