Glass doesn’t make very good compost!
bin is full,” is something Geoff Atkinson, MRC’s Education Manager, often hears. His advice is to talk to your neighbours and see if they have some spare room in their recycling bin. You can also try to make room in your own bin by crushing cardboard boxes so they take up less room or, if you really have to, remove the cardboard and place that in the green-top bin because at least the cardboard can be composted.
Unfortunately, glass deposited into the green-top bins can’t be used to make compost. This glass needs to be removed and is sent to landfill, but some of the glass still remains at the end of the process and contaminates the compost. This glass could more beneficially be utilised if residents placed it in the yellow-top recycling bin.
If you have a lot of bottles and jars take them to a recycling centre like those at Tamala Park or Balcatta. Large amounts of sheet glass, particularly broken glass from doors, windows and tables should be taken to and disposed of at your local tip or transfer station.
“I have too much glass and my recycling
The ‘No Glass in the green-top bin’ campaign has prompted residents to divert their glass away from the green-top bin but we need to keep up the effort and spread the word to those who haven’t yet changed their behaviour because glass doesn’t make good compost. Fun holiday programs with proven results
very year the Resource Recovery Facility in Neerabup processes over 100,000 tonnes of general household waste collected from the Cities of Joondalup, Vincent and Wanneroo and the Town of Victoria Park. Here the organic part (food scraps, lawn clippings, garden pruning’s, paper etc.) is removed from the other waste and is turned into a composted soil conditioner.
To reduce this glass contamination and to improve recycling outcomes, the Mindarie Regional Council (MRC) and its member councils, supported by the Waste Authority, is running a ‘No Glass’ campaign to encourage residents to make use of their yellow-top recycling bins to dispose of bottles and jars.

Go on a family adventure at Escape from Pompeii isit WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle to uncover the story of Escape from Pompeii: the untold Roman rescue.
Managing children’s behaviour in a positive way. With Dolly Bhargava
Ever wonder how a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) thinks and feels?
In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under huge waves of volcanic debris and ash, which ultimately preserved these two maritime cities.
SD is characterised by difficulties in two areas – in social communication and interaction, and in restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour. Want to understand how a child with ASD thinks and feels? Here we go …
Don’t miss this opportunity for the whole family to explore the stories that unfolded as a result of the eruption, and learn how the Roman Empire gained unprecedented power.
SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL INTERACTION Aspiring ship designers can also decorate their own Roman battleship and watch it sail across our digitally animated screen!
Bring the speedway to you!
I’m in a busy playground that has lots of play equipment. I’m on a swing and next to me is a long queue of kids waiting to have a turn. I have difficulties with understanding non-verbal language, so I am oblivious to their frustrated facial expressions and body language. I also struggle with mind reading, so I have difficulties imagining the impact of my behaviour on others.
elebrate your next birthday party, corporate function, work-do or fun night in by bringing the thrill of a GT Raceway track to you.
After a while, someone says sarcastically ‘some people just love swinging!’ but because I am very literal in my understanding I think they simply mean that I love swinging. I keep swinging.
There are lots of kid’s activities, including the Roman military touch-table and a costume corner – where you can get dressed up in full character! Will you choose a soldier’s uniform or a toga?
To book tickets, or for more information, visit museum.wa.gov.au
I finally get off the swing. I want to play on the seesaw now. However, there are other kids on the seesaw. After waiting for a short while, I start screaming. People think I am in pain, but I just want to use the seesaw. I find waiting very hard. Someone comes over and tries to calm me down but I can’t understand what they are saying. I hear a few words but the rest of them just disappear. I wish they would write it down or draw me a picture because then I could

understand better. They ask me how I feel, but I can’t understand properly – or describe what I’m feeling.
RESTRICTED, REPETITIVE PATTERNS OF BEHAVIOUR I’m in a kindergarten classroom. I feel unsafe and insecure because my routine has been disrupted. Everything feels unpredictable and I can’t keep up. A person who is usually there might suddenly go away, there are new toys, and our activities are sometimes done in a different way or at a different time. So I try to engage in activities or behaviours that are directly under my control. This helps me reduce my stress. I keep on spinning the wheels of the car, or I flap a piece of paper in front of my eyes, or sift sand repetitively through my fingers. If I concentrate on doing these things then I can block out other things. This is my way of dealing with boredom, stress or being uncomfortable. I also have sensory sensitivities, and can easily become overwhelmed by the noise and lights in the room. Then I start throwing things, screaming and hiding under the table. I hope by seeing the world through the perspective of a child with ASD it has given us all some insight and understanding.

abies can achieve amazing things with JUMP! Swim Schools.
Fast lane to aquatic survival skills
JUMP! have crafted a successful learn-toswim curriculum that fosters water confidence in children from as young as three months of age.
rowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under five years old. Children can drown in less than 30 seconds in anything from a bucket of water, a bath, fishpond or backyard swimming pool.
The Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report 2017 reported a 32% increase in 0 to 4-year-old drownings this year, which is why JUMP! believes swimming should be taught early as a life skill.
Kids aquatic survival school believe that teaching a child aquatic survival skills, adds a layer of defence in the prevention of drowning. Equipping a child with life-saving skills could give them, their parents and emergency services those crucial minutes that might make all the difference. At Kids Aquatic Survival School children aged from six months to six years can learn when to roll when they need to breathe, how to turn around in the water and the different positions they can use if they fall in the water. To be an aquatic problem solver, call Lauren on 0448 003 264,

How to incorporate the sequence of swimming and floating if safety is further than one breath away
There’s nothing scarier than not knowing what to do in an emergency. That’s why it’s important to be prepared. St John’s Caring for Kids course will teach you all about the DRSABCD first aid action plan, infant CPR, first aid for choking, febrile convulsions and more.
5. All children are taught how to remain in a floating, breathing posture if getting to safety is simply not an option Only
Confidence for kids at the beach

Seadragonz Swim School in Perth provides engaging lessons taught by qualified and experienced instructors who offer personalised tuition. The water is heated to a comfortable 33 degrees, classes are small and services include water familiarisation for babies from two months, toddler and pre-school classes and intensive holiday swim lessons.

Megan’s son Oliver wouldn’t touch the water’s edge when he first started – but each week he became more comfortable. ‘He loved the songs and activities that helped him relax,’ she said. ‘By the end of the six weeks he was not only playing in the shallows but was so excited to splash around! He can’t wait to go again this summer.’
Research also shows early swimmers reach developmental milestones faster and are often ahead in literacy and numeracy – so what better time and place to learn these skills than at WA’s most awarded swim school?

id you know that all ‘Kindy’ programs for three and four year olds (those run from a school or in a child care setting) are run under the same Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)?
The problem is, the EYLF provides a framework but not a curriculum, which is left up to each individual teacher to construct. The education of your child is one of the most important decisions you will ever have to make – so it’s important to understand how different places will educate your child. At Joondalup Montessori, you’ll discover a Kindy program with a difference – where education outcomes are guided by the EYLF and the Montessori Method. The Montessori Method is a scientifically formulated ‘curriculum’ that was developed

Escape from Pompeii: the untold Roman rescue WA Maritime Museum – Running now until 4 February 2018. 9.30am–5pm In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under huge waves of volcanic debris and ash (which ultimately preserved these two
I hear them but I don’t understand them aid Joel, a nine-year-old boy, about his peers and teachers. He has difficulties in reading, performing academically and with socialisation. He wants to join in at recess but tends to be left out. Joel’s very sad and frustrated because he feels that people at home and at school are rejecting him.
Joel suffers from auditory processing difficulties, which prevent him from fully understanding and remembering what people say to him. Many kids with ADHD, autism and learning difficulties have an auditory processing issue. The ear is the gateway to the brain and the body, and the Tomatis® Method helps these children by retraining and strengthening the nervous connections between the ear, brain, body and heart – all in a gentle and nonintrusive way.
Dinosaur Discovery: Lost Creatures of the Cretaceous Back, bigger and better than ever before, prepare for a close encounter with the most extraordinary creatures to ever walk the earth. Featuring 23 moving, life-size animatronic models of the Cretaceous period – approximately 145-66 million years ago – this is an exhibition the whole family wouldn’t want to miss. The scale and authenticity of these magnificent beasts will blow you away, as they move and breathe with thrilling lifelike accuracy. With more dinosaurs than ever before, including two monstrous Tyrannosaurus Rex, the exhibition is an all-ages experience to remember. Step inside a meteorite crater and roam with dinosaurs using cutting edge augmented reality. Dedicated kids’ activities encourage discovery, with a centrally-located play zone, digital dinosaur track experience and more. Perth Covention & Exhibition Centre.
