The importance of imagination

T

his year the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy is celebrating 40 years of delivering dynamic and engaging drama classes.Their curriculum has been developed to allow creativity and imagination within structured, teacher driven lessons. Einstein said ‘imagination is more important than knowledge.’ Developing improvisation skills helps young people understand how to appraise situations, think outside the box and be more confident in unfamiliar situations. Drama also teaches empathy, cooperation, concentration and memory – and improves motivation and reduces stress! Each lesson contains a different improvisation, short scripts, creative movement and short scenarios using the student’s own creativity. At the end of the

The art of conversation

ye contact, greetings, everyday chitchat and meaningful communication is so important. But with technology crowding our lives, it’s easy to see why children are losing the art of conversation. Helen O’Grady Drama Academy’s unique program helps children gain confidence in their verbal communication skills. It’s all done in a fun, stimulating way – and classes include speech training, dramatic play, creative movement, music, storytelling, dressups and more. At the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, children can connect and communicate in a safe environment that fosters creativity and imagination. All teachers are qualified educators with specialist training.

Weekly classes for kids of all ages (3–17) are run at many locations throughout WA. Enrolments are now open. Call 9242 4722, email helen.davey@helenogrady.net.au or visit helenogrady.net.au

s a parent, you are often the first to notice a difference in your child’s behaviour, from a change in their demeanour to a craving for different foods. But what do you do when they’re becoming increasingly withdrawn, or ignoring your instructions? The reason for these changes in behaviour could be an overlooked health issue, according to Telethon Speech & Hearing Head of Hearing Services, Philippa Hatch. ‘Parents might not consider ear health in the first instance with some of these behaviours, particularly in regard to ignoring instructions, becoming withdrawn or not progressing with speech,’ she said. ‘Poor ear health can result in pain, poor hearing and fluctuating hearing levels in children. This can then impact attention, academic performance, as well as cause irritability and poor speech.’ In addition to parents, Ms Hatch said teachers often noticed these behavioural

changes in their students. In the classroom, children may struggle with everyday learning activities as well as have trouble communicating with other students. ‘We recently had a child whose teacher recommended he come for a hearing test as he was in pre-primary and was having problems with phonics – learning sounds and letters,’ she said. ‘Tests indicated he had middle ear fluid that resulted in a moderate hearing loss in both ears.’ After receiving help the child’s hearing returned to normal and both parents and teachers shared that he was following instructions in class and interacting more with peers. Healthy ears and healthy hearing is a key factor in determining the development of your child. If you have any concerns about your child’s hearing, contact Telethon Speech & Hearing for a hearing test. Call 9387 9888 or visit tsh.org.au to book online.

t’s that time of year again. Shoes, socks, hats, shirts, pens, books – the list (and cost) is endless.

The logistics of managing school, work and home can also be tough. Before and after school care, sports lessons, music lessons – it’s a lot for parents to deal with. Life is even more complicated when kids (and parents) don’t have a set parental care routine each week – or when one parent refuses to contribute to school fees, uniforms or musical instruments. Inevitably, this instability and conflict affects kids’ behaviours and potentially, their success at school. HBR Family Lawyers has helped many families get into a parental care routine and

A

s a parent, you may hear about Montessori from family and friends who’ve enrolled their children into a Montessori childcare or school but what makes it different? While there are many unique characteristics associated with the Montessori Method, here are a few which inspired my decision towards choosing the Montessori Method for my child. • Multi Age Classrooms. Multi-age classrooms are a defining feature of Montessori preschools and schools because it gives children unique learning and social development opportunities. Younger children naturally learn by emulating their older peers so they develop faster while older children develop leadership through their mentoring of younger peers. In this environment, younger children are also more assertive while older children have greater empathy and respect towards others, even those who are younger.

Explore the spectacular world of maths

• A Learning environment which emphasizes responsibility and self-discipline.

W

During lesson time, children are presented with various learning materials by their teacher and encouraged to make a choice.

hen most of us think of maths, we think of numbers, equations, shapes and graphs. But there is a whole other world of maths to discover.

Being able to choose their own learning activities means children are empowered towards making a decision from an early age.

Think about when you are in the supermarket buying fruit – you are making decisions based on how much you need, the price, the weight and how long it will remain fresh. All of which requires mathematical thinking.

Being given responsibility means children are more willing to complete a task and happier to work independently. • Community of mutual respect & empathy. As a parent, I’ve observed my own child respectfully engaging with and speaking about his teachers more as peers rather than authority figures. A great social dynamic also exists amongst the children playing on the playground as they have friends both from the “older” and “younger” classes. Consequently, I believe this contributes towards being less bullying amongst the children. If my parent experiences resonate with you, I recommend for you to call your local Montessori childcare or school to find out more.

Australia’s leading model & talent agency for kids

M

ake this the year you reduce your waste footprint.

Having discovered and developed many little (and big!) stars over the years, we take as much delight in seeing our talent in print and on screen as they do.

It’s so easy to produce waste. We’re continually encouraged to buy things – always updating to the newest, latest and greatest. There are bargains everywhere and we simply buy too much, far more than we need. And often items just get wasted. Then there is all the excess packaging that everything comes in.

Our talent has featured in TV commercials, TV series, feature films, major ‘Hollywood’ films, catalogues, billboards, magazines and more!

Does your little star love the camera? Our experienced staff will explain what makes the industry ‘tick’ and can give you feedback about potential opportunities for your child.

If your little star loves the camera, give us a call today! 1300 888 611 | bettina.com.au

Supporting a secure attachment

A

ttachment is one of the most popular and well-supported theories related to parenting. Its purpose is to make your child feel safe, secure and protected. It is where your child sees their primary caregiver as a place of safety and comfort. Parents play many different roles in the lives of their children, including teacher, playmate, disciplinarian, caregiver and attachment. Of all these roles, attachment is the most important in predicting your child’s social and emotional outcome – and has long been recognised as protective factor against social and emotional problems.

Attachment is partly influenced by your child’s innate temperament. As temperaments differ from person to person, this can lead to parent-child attachment difficulties. We all want our children to grow up to be healthy, well-adjusted adults, and improving your attachment with your child can help them achieve this. If you would like support in establishing a secure attachment, contact Parenting Together on 0411 645 136, email trinamichail@gmail.com or visit parentingtogether.com.au

xperts say that children who wait until they’re at school for their first dental visit are at higher risk of decay.

xperience the best of rural life at the best agricultural show in WA.

As a specialist Paediatric Dentist who cares for the teeth of toddlers and children, Dr Rod Jennings has seen it first-hand.

Woolorama is a family friendly day out with plenty of entertainment for kids and adults – including camel rides, baby farm animals, livestock competitions, dog jumps, fashion parades and the excitement of sideshow alley.

‘In WA the average five year old starts school with cavities in two or three teeth – and one in ten has decay in at least half their teeth,’ he said.

Parents and children alike will enjoy browsing the trade fair and machinery exhibitions and the arts and crafts – and the horse events will completely captivate you.

‘The shame is that it’s preventable. Early visits to the dentist help to build a good foundation for kids and make the dental clinic an approachable place. It also gives us dentists an opportunity to catch and prevent decay before it causes problems.’

All the fun on Saturday culminates in an evening Rodeo spectacular! Visit woolorama.com for more information or visit their Facebook page, Wagin Woolorama.

Health authorities across the world, including the Australian Dental Association,

recommend early childhood dental checkups. To arrange a consult with Dr Jennings, contact Toothbuds Paediatric Dentistry on 6155 9899.
