Brain-Based Treatment for ADHD

A

ttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects an estimated one million children and adults in Australia. It’s an umbrella term that describes three main subtypes: • Inattentive – Difficulties with attention and memory, poor time management and organisation skills. • Hyperactive or Impulsive – Always moving, difficulty relaxing, easily distracted and interruptive. • Combined – A combination of inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive symptoms. ADHD is more common in boys and research shows that most children with ADHD will continue to experience problems into adulthood. Recent studies have also highlighted a late-onset ADHD where symptoms do not become evident until adulthood.

What causes ADHD? Research shows that ADHD has a strong genetic basis. So, when a child is diagnosed with ADHD it is very likely that at least one of the parents will have ADHD as well. It is not yet clear exactly what causes ADHD but research shows that there are changes in the structure and function of key areas of the brain involved with attention and impulsecontrol.

individuals and families should be able to make an informed choice based upon the range of treatments now available. The Perth Brain Centre, established in 2007, focuses primarily on providing Neurofeedback Therapy in conjunction with behavioural interventions, psycho-education, lifestyle and dietary advice. Neurofeedback is recognised by The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) to be an effective treatment for ADHD and is featured in Dr Norman Doidge’s book The Brain’s Way of Healing, the sequel to his international best-selling book The Brain That Changes Itself.

Neurofeedback Therapy Neurofeedback is a brain-based treatment, suitable for people of almost all ages, that uses a sophisticated brain-computer Interface to ‘strengthen’ and ‘re-train’ the brain. Patients sit comfortably during training whilst sensors precisely detect and measure brainwave activity. This information is analysed in realtime and presented as audio and visual feedback.

T

he first two terms of school can be rocky as teachers get to know children and adapt to suit their classes. This is why Terms 3 and 4 tend to be the ones where most progress occurs. Children are settled in and, apart from worrying about Naplan results, are generally more relaxed. This is a good time to re-visit personal learning goals, individual education plans and family learning plans. Here are some top tips to ensure your children have a successful Term 3.

dreams for the semester – what they hope to achieve and improve etc. Discuss these ideas and put them up on the wall as a reminder of what you all want to achieve. • Stick to routines and try to not to crowd too many activities into each week. • Encourage children by pointing out what they have done right and help them with any difficulties. • Establish a family motto and say it together each evening at dinner. Ours is Per Ardua Ad Astra – Through Struggle to the Stars! Children love rituals like this and respond well to regular, planned motivation practices.

• Talk with your children. Turn the TV off at meal times and really communicate. Oral language is the basis for effective literacy development, as discussed recently on ABC’s Lateline program. • Make time for reading. You could even establish a daily family reading time. • Make sure kids learn their times tables. Our favourite App for this is called Maths Rockx – and kids love it! • Start a family journal and have everyone write something about their day in it. You can add pictures, cartoons or a small mindmap. • Have a goal setting evening or afternoon. Give each family member a large piece of paper where they can write down their

If your child needs help with schooling, this is the time to get it – preferably early in the term so that they can achieve progress by Christmas. The Victoria Carlton Programs can help with your child’s schooling. There are programs suit all children and planned payments to suit all pockets. Substantial discounts are available to ensure all children have access to these wonderful programs. Call 9271 4200, email iceinfo@iinet.net.au or visitfacebook.com/VCPrograms.

Treatment In the past, treatment for ADHD was often limited to medication. However, now it is generally accepted that the most effective treatment should be ‘patient-centred’ and involve a range of interventions. Aside from medication, other treatment options that have been proven to be effective include behavioural therapy, lifestyle and dietary changes, Neurofeedback Therapy and psychoeducation. There is no one-size-fits-all approach and at The Perth Brain Centre, who believe that

How to make separation as stress free as possible for children By Tim Grace, a Separated Parents Counsellor from Lifeline

eparation and divorce is a major step for everyone and involves making changes to many aspects of life. Your children’s response to these changes and their overall wellbeing is important during the stages of the family break up.

Why co-parenting is important after separation Creating a business-like relationship is important when co-parenting. This means focusing on the children and what is best for them, rather than staying in conflict with the other parent. To achieve this, some parents may need to engage in support or counselling to process some of their emotions around the break up. If parents are still caught up in their anger and sadness it can impact negatively on their children. Children should not be burdened with adult issues such as court appearances, finances, affairs and indiscretions involving either parent.

Putting hurt and anger aside Often children experience stress and anxiety during separation and feel that it is their responsibility to take sides or try and keep both parents happy. For some children, it can be helpful to receive some specialist

counselling to process some of their anger, confusion and sadness. A counsellor acts as a neutral person that they can share their issues with, without the fear of upsetting anyone.

Finding a new support structure In some cases, parents rely on their children as caretakers through their separation, often because they do not have enough support in place themselves. This gives children a sense of burdening responsibility. Children need to be children and they can often take on very adult responsibilities when their parents separate, which can lead to anxiety or depression. Parents should endeavour to find new support systems that do not rely on their children and focus on their children’s needs, as these can often be neglected during times of emotional distress and upheaval. Putting your children’s interests first allows them to love both parents. It is not always the separation itself that affects children, but the ongoing conflict between parents. When parents work towards a cooperative parenting relationship, children will adapt and flourish. If you are in doubt about your children’s wellbeing, seek professional advice. Lifeline provides services for families in WA that are going through separation. Visit lifelinewa.org.au/services or call 9261 4454 to find out more.

Children need reassurance that their parent’s separation is not their fault. Often they will blame themselves, which can lead to difficulties later on. Even though they attend school, engage in activities, see their friends and may appear to be coping well, internally they may well be struggling with their thoughts and emotions. It is important to communicate openly and clearly with them. Statements such as ‘your parents both love you, we just cannot live together anymore and this is not your fault,’ can go a long way.

The non-ADHD brain is able to tune into the relevant auditory and visual information – what you are saying, your facial expressions and body language – whilst screening out irrelevant auditory or visual information. But for a child with ADHD, it’s different. They can’t separate irrelevant information from relevant information and become distracted by all the people eating, talking, laughing and entering the café. With all this stimulus surrounding them, it’s easy to miss out on bits of the conversation and nonverbal cues. This is why children with ADHD often appear uninterested or inattentive to what you are saying. Even figuring out what they would like to order, or remembering directions to the toilet, can be too much to process.

DISORGANISATION Disorganisation means your child often forgets tasks and instructions or easily loses items. This can be taxing on everyone around.

HYPERACTIVITY AND IMPULSIVITY A good example of hyperactivity is when a child is continuously fidgeting with something, like cutlery or salt and pepper shakers (basically anything they can get their hands on). They squirm around in their chair and frequently get up. Impulsivity can be seen when children say or do things before thinking. They may talk nonstop, constantly interrupt and blurt out inappropriate comments. They may even play with the knife and cut themselves. As physician Martin H. Fischer says; 'Diagnosis is not the end, but the beginning of practice.’ And there are plenty of positive practical strategies that you can use to support children with ADHD. For more information, please refer to Bhargava, D. (2016). Behaviour Zen and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and the workshops listed on the website.

A great confidence booster for children is allowing them to participate in everyday family life. Through this participation, crucial aspects of personality and intellect develop. As your child becomes skilful at carrying out everyday household tasks, they discover the joy of learning and of purposeful activities, they also feel that they too have something useful to contribute to the family.

O

riginally founded by parents who wished to be part of their children’s education, Kerry Street Community School is a small, independent school where parents are welcome to participate in their child’s learning.

Attend school with your child (3 months - 7 years). Baby/ToddlerSchool, Baby/ToddlerGym, Preschool & Kindy, School Readiness programs. LOTE PROGRAMS including Spanish Playgroup, French Playgroup, Italian Playgroup. Private tutoring for school children and Home-Tutor programs (grades 1-7). Home-school tutorship.
