Play, Explore

DISCOVER Eat More Wild! by James Kendall

anyone who wants to get into cooking with wild foods with their families. It carpets ancient woodland floors at this time of year a

We’ve seen it time after time, when kids come on our Forest School days they absolutely LOVE any food that they collect, prepare and cook themselves outdoors, they just yum it up! There has to be something special in that connection to food that you only get when you forage for it yourself. In fact we now know that our brains get a hit of dopamine (the happy hormone) everytime we recognise an edible plant and eat it. This ensured our very survival as huntergathers. There’s more science to back up why it’s great to munch wild food too… “When we are relaxed and at ease in our environment, our parasympathetic system (sometimes called the rest and digest system) kicks in. This is why food tastes better in the outdoors.” Yoshifumi Miyazaki – Physical Anthropologist, Tokyo So we know it’s good for us, but in Springtime when so much of the land is bursting into life, what should we pick? Well, we would recommend something that’s easy to recognise, abundant and easy to cook with, and also most kids will enjoy it. That plant is Wild Garlic, otherwise know as Ramsons (Allium ursinum). In Welsh this plant is called Craf y Geifr. Everyone’s heard of wild garlic, even if you may not be entirely confident identifying it. Wild garlic is a great ‘first forage’ plant for

and can often be found in the base of old hedgerows too. All parts of the plant are edible, through we would suggest picking just the leaf as that leaves the bulb in the ground for next year. You’ll find the long, spear-shaped leaves from Feb – May, and toward the end of the season the pretty star-shaped flowers will appear on long stalks. Wild Garlic makes a very yummy garlic bread (of course) which makes a perfect partner to pizza. Simply make up the bread topping by adding the finely chopped leaves to soft butter. You can also throw Wild Garlic into pretty much any Italian pasta dish. Mix chopped leaves into cream cheese, bruschetta or make a fresh pesto. If your family likes the spicier side of life, try making kimchi with it, it’s amazing! We recommend getting the kids to wash, chop and add the garlic into their food, that way they’re more likely to eat it, instead of asking “Urrrgghh, what’s that green stuff?!” If you’re using it as an ingredient in a meal, treat it like spinach and add it toward the end of cooking to prevent it losing it’s flavour.

It’s worth mentioning here that there are some plants which look somewhat similar to wild garlic but are in fact poisonous, plants such as Lords & Ladies (Arum maculatum), however none of these other plants smell of garlic at all, so if you’re not getting that familiar odour from the plant, it’s not wild garlic - simple.

If you’re interested in finding out more about foraging, then you can join us for our Wild Food, Foraging & Wilderness Cookery days on either Sat 18th April or Sat 9th May. Get Your Kids Back to Nature At Woodland Classroom, we host regular woodland activity sessions at the National Trust’s Erddig estate and at Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, including outdoor holiday clubs and birthday parties in the woods. How can we meet our children’s emotional needs in an increasingly technological world? A recent study found that 53% of children own a smart phone by the time they are 7 years old - do you think a ‘device’ is affecting your child emotionally? According to US expert speaker Tony Robbins, we have six basic emotional needs: Certainty / Comfort - in a frequently stressful and busy world it’s not surprising that children (and us adults too!) turn to devices as a comfort and escape mechanism. However, certainty can also come from making more enriching daily rituals a priority, and doing them together, such as sharing a meal, walking the dog, chatting regularly, a bedtime story; listening to a podcast or audio book in the car; doing a regular hobby together. Experts also agree it is a good rule to ban phones from bedrooms, adults included good sleep is the greatest comfort of all. Variety – children can become bored easily, in what creative ways can we compete with the constant variety technology can provide? How about cooking a new meal together, going to see a local live event, or trying a new sport, hobby, or board game? Love and Connection – what our children really crave is our love and attention, no matter how hard they might seem to push us away. There are five

‘love languages’ - Touch (e.g. hugs); Quality Time; Acts of Service; Words and Gifts. If our child values ‘words’ the most, for example; then we need to be careful what we say, and perhaps use tech positively to send chatty positive texts they will love to receive. (Find out more www.5lovelanguages.com). Significance – children want to feel heard. Simple things can meet this need, such as discussing which day they might have a certain meal, or what they will wear, or what present they think a friend might like for their birthday. Growth – some children may meet this need mainly through school, but many will want to learn or get better at things outside of school as well. For example, a friend’s teenager is interested in car mechanics and has arranged to spend a day with a neighbour when he services his vintage car! Contribution - making a difference in some way is our final human need. Our children may not recognise this in themselves yet, but a huge boost to our self-esteem comes when we help someone else. Encouraging children to be a part of a team, or raise funds for charity, or visit an elderly friend or relative, or carry out a simple act of kindness can really help to give them an emotional boost, as well as the person or cause they are helping.

Cat Williams works with children of all ages, and their parents or teachers on: emotional issues; lack of confidence or self-esteem; strengths psychology, bullying, family breakdown etc. Find out more about her sessions, assemblies and workshops at www.staycalmandcontent.com or contact her via catstaycalm@gmail.com / 07799641347.
