Why We Still Need To Get Out in Winter by Lea Kendall Did you know that, even though it’s wet & cold, we NEED to get outdoors with our kids? It's essential for our health and happiness, here's why... Winter is a time of year when many families hide away indoors, mirroring the hibernation of some animals and with all this wind and rain we’ve had for what feels like forever, who can blame them? Once Christmas and New Year are behind us it and it seems there’s not much to look forward to. Many of us just feel like cuddling up on the sofa and watching a movie when it’s cold, wet and going dark so early. Spring feels like a lifetime away, doesn't it? When we do have to go out to work or get the kids to school, we dive out of the car and straight indoors, then it’s back out into the car, dive in and out of shops and back home, back to the world of central heating and electric lighting. Although this might make us feel more comfortable, it’s no compensation for the benefits of fresh air and sunlight. Without direct sunlight our bodies cannot produce vitamin D, which is important for maintaining normal blood levels of phosphorus and calcium, and helps keep our bones healthy and strong. The amount of daylight we get each day has a dramatic effect on our mood too. Without this daylight our body produces substances that make us feel lethargic and lacking in energy. When sunlight hits our retinas at the back of our eyes, light sensitive nerve cells are activated which stimulates the production of serotonin and cortisol. It is not always easy to get motivated to go outside in the middle of winter but remember this

lack of motivation is caused by our lack of sunlight and the over production of melatonin (our body’s sleep hormone). So in the winter months with so little daylight available it’s even more important to get outside and feel the sun on your face, in fact, I guarantee you will feel more energised and invigorated for making the effort. Our ancestors understood the importance of bringing more light in to our lives during the darkest time of the year and so they celebrated the Winter Solstice, marking the midwinter when we have the shortest amount of daylight. This usually falls on Dec 21st. Torch light parades, bonfires and lighting lanterns are all traditions at this time of year. "Winter Solstice, like Summer Solstice, is a moment of pause between two cycles, a moment of transition that can be held and savoured, a doorway, an opening, a place on the edge, when we can stop our busy lives and take a moment to

experience this edge between these two great cycles of the year." Glennie Kindred You can join in celebrating this special time of year with us by coming on one of our magical Woodland Winter Solstice evenings held in the forests of Erddig estate. We will be leading a lantern walk, enjoying a campfire, playing music and cooking up seasonal snacks over the hot coals. We have a range of events for all ages from 20th to 22nd December. They always sell out so be sure to book well in advance.

Get Kids Back to Nature With Us At Woodland Classroom, we host regular woodland activity sessions at the National Trust’s Erddig & Chirk Castle estates and at Hawarden Estate Farm Shop, including outdoor holiday clubs and birthday parties in the woods. We also work with local schools delivering outdoor education, bushcraft, nature connection, mindfulness and Forest School programmes. How a Glitter Jar can help with understanding and managing emotions. One of the activities I often use with children and teenagers, is to make a glitter jar. When the jar (filled with water and glitter) is shaken up, the glitter flies about everywhere and we can’t see through the water. It takes a minute or so for the glitter to settle to the bottom and for us to be able to see clearly through the water again. This metaphor can be useful to use when thinking about our emotions. Different emotions are triggered in us every day; anger, frustration, sadness, anxiety, for example, and sometimes these can feel overwhelming and can prevent us from seeing clearly or ‘thinking straight’. If we act too quickly when we feel overwhelmed, we often regret our actions later. Mental health experts recommend ‘grounding exercises’, which help to give us time to process our feelings, rather than acting when we can’t think clearly. This is where using a glitter jar can be helpful as it reminds us that it is normal to feel overwhelmed at times, and that it is a good idea to take as long as we need before deciding what to do next. Making the Glitter Jar You will need: a clean jar with a tight fitting lid; glitter in about 4 different colours; water; paper; pencils; some string or ribbon. 1. Fill the jar with water 2. Add about a teaspoon of each of the coloured glitters to the jar 3. Put the lid on tightly and shake the jar, watch the glitter swirl and fly around 4. Add more glitter if you wish Labelling and using your Glitter Jar 1. As you watch the glitter flying around think about the emotions you frequently feel, perhaps you worry a lot about getting your work done, or you feel sad when you fall out with friends, or you feel angry at your siblings or frustrated when you can’t get something right. 2. Allocate an emotion to each of the coloured glitters e.g. red for anger; sliver for worry; gold for sadness; blue for frustration. 3. Make a small label and on one side write the words “This jar can help me when I feel: (list the emotions you frequently feel that you would like help to manage) 4. On the other side of the label write the words “As I watch the glitter settle I will feel (and then list how you would like to feel e.g. calmer; less worried; less stressed; not as angry; happier; not as frustrated etc). Tie the label on to the jar with the string or ribbon. 5. You can add another label with a list of favourite helpful activities e.g. speaking to a trusted person, going outside, listening to music, playing with a pet, exercising etc 6. Next time you feel overwhelmed with emotions, just shake the jar as many times as you need to and watch the glitter spin and settle until you feel more like yourself again, then you will have a clearer idea of the best thing to do next. Cat Williams works with children of all ages, and their parents or teachers on: emotional and behavioural issues; lack of confidence or self-esteem; bullying, family breakdown etc. Find out more about her sessions, assemblies and workshops at www.staycalmandcontent.com or contact her via catstaycalm@gmail.com / 07799641347
