Centre for Child Development & Foundation Annual Reports 2010 - 2011

Report from the Board Chair & CEO KidsAbility The KidsAbility story is being re-written in fundamental ways and a new story is evolving. Examples of this transformation during the past year included: 1. The completion of a year-long study to develop a KidsAbility Client Classification System to ensure we utilize our resources in the most effective manner to benefit clients and the subsequent approval of a new Life Needs Model of service delivery. 2. The nurturing of Firefly Therapy Services, a fee-based social enterprise as a means of expanding services to children in our communities and increasing our financial sustainability. KidsAbility Board of Directors Louise Leonard Chair Terry Wilson Vice-Chair Penny Smiley Secretary Gary Pooley Treasurer Arisa Alexanian Bruce Antonello Sarah Chadwick Steve Currie Wendy Duff Jan Hayward Bobbi Holte Douglas Jones Doug Letson Marilee Mark Dr. Janet Speight Ray Stultz Stephen Swatridge Lisa Talbot Paul Winnett

3. The leveraging of technology to improve the effectiveness of our organization and the quality and range of our client services. In addition to these transformational changes, we continued to nurture several important initiatives that support our Strategic Directions including: • Our partnerships with McMaster Medical School and University of Waterloo Pharmacy School are bringing new knowledge and resources to our client services including the addition of three part-time pediatric physician specialists; • Our KidsAbility/Scotiabank Centre of Excellence continues to re-position us as a recognized leader in applied research and best practices; and • Our Community Forums for Autism and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders are helping to inform service providers and parents as well as build community capacity to be more knowledgeable about children with these complex diagnoses.

We also expanded the breadth of services that are financially supported by our Foundation to include such initiatives as a Client Bursary, Ontario Telemedicine Network, an electronic knowledge network, a part-time pediatrician and several therapy positions.

Our most significant benchmark of success is that we provided services to over 4,500 children last year. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our staff, volunteers, supporters and partners, we continue to improve the “life journey” of children with special needs.

The Foundation has experienced a very rewarding 2010/2011 year. Our generous supporters donated $419,000 in cash and pledges for KidsAbility’s new Kitchener site. This year’s Radiothon was also impressively supported and accounts for over $225,000 of the $1,269,347 our donors have entrusted to KidsAbility through its annual campaign. Dan Girardi has chaired this event for the past several years and deserves our heartfelt thanks for his impassioned leadership – thanks are also due to all of the staff, sponsors, families and volunteers who joined us for this significant day. And our good friends at CHYM 96.7, KIX 106, 570 News, and Rogers TV deserve a thunderous thank you for providing us with the opportunity to share our children’s achievements with the wider public – it is the voices of our families that reach into the hearts of local citizens, and it is these friends in the media who bring those voices to our donors. We are also grateful for the strong support of our various Waterloo/Wellington Rotary clubs who continue in the footsteps of those Rotarians who are the founders of today’s KidsAbility. KidsAbility is a collaborative adventure: working with the kids we serve and with their families to enhance the quality of their lives; working with one another at KidsAbility to enhance the effectiveness of the services we offer; and working with the members of our communities to raise the funds to provide those services in the most professional manner and to as many families as we possibly can. Thank you all for being an important component of the KidsAbility community.

The Carol Shantz Bursary Written by Eric Paez-Parent, KidsAbility Alumni, & 2010 Recipient of the Carol Shantz Bursary My name is Eric Paez-Parent, and I am the recipient of the Carol Shantz Bursary for 2010, an award that is given to a KidsAbility Alumni who has decided to pursue an area of post secondary education and demonstrated strong personal achievement. Without Carol Shantz, a former principal and teacher at the KidsAbility School, this bursary could not have been awarded to me or any of the past recipients. On June 21st, I travelled to KidsAbility in Waterloo to their annual general meeting to meet Carol Shantz in person, accept the award, and talk about myself and share my gratitude for KidsAbility staff and members. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that I would be first to receive an additional $1,500 for each consecutive year of university following the first. Although money shouldn't define gratitude, this was a surprise I was very grateful for, and it helped to further demonstrate the generosity of the KidsAbility Foundation. The money I received from the Carol Shantz Bursary will no doubt help me next year and in the years to come during my studies at the University of Guelph. I decided to begin with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Genetics and Molecular Biology, a 4 year undergraduate honours degree. It used to be a great interest of mine to attempt to both build, and redesign different things to suit a specific task as a young child. Building upon this, I have always been interested in biology and the dynamics of animal populations as well as evolution, all relating to genetics. Building upon these already defined interests, I grew more interested in the implications of a degree in genetics, especially with the recent diversification in the field. Although my childhood has influenced my post secondary studies, I believe a certain aspect of it may also be attributed to KidsAbility. Through volunteering and KidsAbility services, I was able to observe to what incredible magnitude KidsAbility services were helping other children. As a result of how much the staff at KidsAbility could benefit children in need. Carol Shantz with 2010 Carol Shantz Bursary Award Recipient

Congratulations Eric!

The Carol Shantz Bursary Award is awarded each year to a current client or alumnus of KidsAbility with a life-long disability who is enrolled in post secondary. Established to honour, Carol, a former KidsAbility School Educator and Principal who retired in 2001, the award recognizes an individual who, through effort and perseverance, is seeking to cultivate their potential to its maximum by pursuing post secondary education.

Building a Brighter Future... Together! For many years, KidsAbility had been looking at options to expand our facilities and through the support of our generous donors, we are thrilled to be a part of Family and Children’s Services newly developed Family Centre in Kitchener. One of KidsAbility’s goals has always been to build strong community supports around our clients and families so they can better meet their potential in their home communities. Our new Kitchener Site allows us to complete this circle for many of our young clients by reaching out to them where they live, learn and play in a structure that provides a wide range of facilities and several other complementary services. This new and exciting chapter in our history would not have been possible without the generous support of our donors. Many thanks to everyone involved in this large undertaking--KidsAbility Board and Staff; our volunteer fundraisers; and donors. Together, we are building a brighter community and a brighter future for children and youth with special needs.

Enhancing Service Delivery Thanks to the incredible generosity of you, our donors, KidsAbility was privileged to be able to celebrate several exciting advancements in specialized medical care for children with special needs in Waterloo Region this past year. In September, Dr. Karen Backway was recruited to the KidsAbility staff on a part-time basis. Dr. Backway’s specialty training in pediatrics and particular interest in children with a variety of special needs, further enriched KidsAbility’s high-trained therapists and medical team. As well, through our partnership with McMaster Medical School, Dr. William J. Mahoney and Dr. Olaf Kraus de Camargo established outreach clinics to children at KidsAbility’s sites in Waterloo and Cambridge. This has meant less time travelling to medical appointments in Hamilton and less time waiting to receive access to the knowledge and care from such highly-trained specialists. The addition of these specialized physician resources has been a huge benefit already to our community in terms of supporting the development of care for children with complex medical needs and complementing the skills of our talented local pediatricians. Your faithful support allows KidsAbility to continue to seek out new partnerships, recruit highly-trained specialists and support the growing needs of children with special needs. Thank you!

2010-2011 KidsAbility Ambassadors Each year three young ambassadors are chosen to represent KidsAbility in their communities. Our ambassadors and their families generously give of their time to share their stories of hope at many events throughout the year. "We feel KidsAbility is aptly named, because through our experience, they have shown that it is about what our kids can do--not what they can’t. When the focus is put on our kids’ abilities, they are able to meet or even surpass expectations. KidsAbility has given us access to tools, services, knowledge and support to help Ryan be independent, all in one place”, says Ryan's parents, Christine and Dan Kokiw. Ryan, Lauren and Logan and their families continue to benefit from the knowledge, support and life-changing therapy at KidsAbility; tools that are equipping all of them for a bright future ahead!
