Children don’t need to be perfect to succeed. They need to know they’re loved enough to keep trying.

s parents, we spend the weeks before school starts checking off supply lists and organizing schedules. We make sure our children have everything they need for their first day—but what about what they need emotionally?

As the new school year begins, the greatest gift we can give our children may not be another backpack or planner—it’s helping them remember that their worth has never depended on a report card.

Today's children are growing up in a world unlike any generation before them. They face constant comparison through social media, pressure to earn top grades, excel in sports, fit in socially, and somehow discover who they are— all at the same time. It's no surprise that anxiety is on the rise. Today, about one in five U.S. youth report experiencing symptoms of anxiety, with diagnosed cases increasing by 61% between 2016 and 2023.

Redefine What Success Looks Like Before the first day of school, take a moment to ask yourself: What do I truly want my child to gain from this school year?

Of course we want them to learn, grow, and do well academically. But what if success also meant learning how to be kind when someone is left out or being bullied? Having the courage to ask a

question or raise their hand in class.

Trying something new without giving up. Recovering after disappointment.

When children know that character matters just as much as achievement, they begin measuring themselves by who they are on the inside, not just what they accomplish.

Focus on the Heart, Not Just the Backpack A backpack holds pencils and folders.

A child’s heart carries hopes, fears, excitement, and uncertainty.

Before school begins, create space for honest conversations.

Ask questions like:

• “What are you most excited about this year?”

• “Is there anything that you are nervous about?”

• “How can I support you if school feels overwhelming?”

Children don’t always need solutions.

Sometimes, they just need someone who will listen. When children feel emotionally safe at home, they walk into school carrying something even more valuable than confidence with them… they carry security.

Make Home the Place Where Worth Is Never Questioned Your children will be evaluated plenty.

Teachers assign grades. Coaches choose teams. Home should be the one place where love never has to be earned. It is given.

Celebrate effort as much as outcomes.

Praise perseverance, honesty, kindness, and responsibility. Let your children know that a bad test, a difficult season, or a mistake does not change how deeply they are loved and valued.

Children who know they are accepted exactly as they are become more willing to take healthy risks, try new things, and bounce back when life doesn’t go as planned.

Teach Them That Comparison Is a Thief Comparison has become one of childhood’s greatest challenges, especially on social media. One child compares grades. Another compares athletic ability or clothing, popularity, and appearance.

Remind your children that every person is growing on a different timeline. Just because someone else shines brightly in one area doesn’t make your child’s light any less valuable.

The goal isn’t to be better than someone else, it’s to become more fully yourself.

Build Confidence Through Responsibility Real confidence isn’t created through constant praise. It’s built through experience.

Allow your children to solve ageappropriate problems, organize their schoolwork, speak to their teachers respectfully, and recover from small mistakes. Every challenge they work through becomes evidence that they are more than capable.

Confidence doesn’t always come from hearing, “You can do anything.” It comes from discovering, “I did something hard, and I made it through.”

Create a Safe Place to Land School can be exciting, but it can also be exhausting.

Once the school

day ends, your child needs somewhere soft to land. Protect family dinners whenever possible. Take walks or read together. Share highs and lows from the day. Create screen-free moments where everyone reconnects without distractions.

Children don’t need “perfect" parents.

They need parents who are present.

Years from now, your child won’t remember every spelling test, math worksheet, or homework assignment.

But they will remember how they felt during these years. They’ll remember whether home felt safe enough to fail in, and whether they believed they were enough, especially on the hard days.

As another school year begins, let’s remember that we’re raising more than students. We’re raising future neighbors, leaders, friends, spouses, parents, and compassionate human beings.

Grades matter, yes.

But helping our children build confidence, resilience, kindness, and a strong sense of self matters even more. When children truly believe in their own worth, there’s no limit to what they can learn, become, or contribute to this world. k

Encourage Water Breaks Throughout the Day Children get absorbed in play and forget to drink, so offer water regularly — don't wait for them to ask. Keep a bottle on hand during outdoor activities, and add water-rich foods like watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers, and oranges.

Plan Outdoor Activities During Cooler Hours Heat typically peaks from late morning through early evening. Schedule play, sports, and walks for early morning or evening when possible to keep kids active while limiting heat exposure.

8 Ways to Get Organized for Back to School Written By: Kati Raymer - Families First

buy. A good rule you might want to implement is that any time you buy them a new article of clothing, they have to get rid of one in their closet.

Buy school supplies.

You can get a list of needed school supplies from the school office or your child’s teacher. If they don’t provide one, make one yourself. Try to stick to the basics (backpack, pencils/pens, notebooks, etc.) until school starts, so you don’t end up with unneeded supplies. You can always go grab more later if needed.

reparing for a new school year can be an overwhelming task, almost as overwhelming as staying organized throughout the school year. Here’s some ways to start out organized and stay that way!

Create a filing system.

Files aren’t just for offices – they’re also a great way to keep your home organized! Set aside a drawer to hold your files and buy some folders with cute patterns (it’s always easier to keep things organized if they look nice!). You can set aside one folder for each child in which to keep their school papers and medical forms, or you can organize the folders by month, or by category. If you keep the folders updated throughout the year, you’ll cut back on the time and stress spent looking for lost papers.

Update all medical information.

Fill out any necessary medical forms and catch your kids up on all their immunizations. If your child has any allergies that may cause a problem while they’re at school, contact their teacher to discuss necessary precautions.

Clean out the closets.

Before you go out and buy a whole new back-to-school wardrobe, go through your child’s closet with them and have them try on clothes they haven’t worn in a while. Take their outgrown clothes to a resale shop or donate them to a homeless shelter. This will make room for any new clothes and keep their closet from getting too cluttered throughout the year. Then take stock of what your child does have; this will give you an idea of what clothes you need to

If your kids have been staying up late and sleeping in late during the summer, you should gradually move up their bedtimes and wake-up times by about ten to twenty minutes each day starting a couple weeks before the end of summer. This will make bedtime easier on everyone once school starts. And once you’ve established a schedule, stick to it.

Plan out what to pack for lunch.

Stock up on lunchbox basics ahead of time when you see them on sale.

Make it fun by letting your kids be a part of the planning process; take them to the grocery store with you and let them pick out something special. Also, ahead of time, you can make notes to put in your child’s lunch box for the

Update your calendar.

Manage your and your kids’ schedules more efficiently by adding school-related items to your calendar, like holidays and school events.

Don’t forget to fill in extra-curricular activities too, like soccer games, music classes, or karate. Keep your organizer with you and make changes whenever something comes up. If you know what to expect, you’ll be much more capable of handling a busy schedule!

Set up a homework schedule.

Get a special “homework” notebook for each child, and every day when they come home from school, have them write down their homework assignments for that day. Keep the notebooks laid out where everyone can see them, and when they finish each assignment have them cross it off the list. Make a rule that they can only watch TV or have free time when all the assignments are marked off! This is a good way for your kids to have visual proof of their progress, and for you to keep track of what they’re doing. k ANSWER:

Healthy Back to School Blueberry Oatmeal Muffin

B

ack to school means back to busy mornings, and these Healthy Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins are ready for it. Made with whole oats, fresh blueberries, and a brown sugar streusel topping, they're filling enough to count as breakfast and tasty enough to double as a snack. Make a batch on Sunday and you've got the whole week covered.

Prep: 25 min Total Time: 1 hr. Yield: 12 Ingredients Streusel Topping

• 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats (uncooked)

• 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 2 teaspoons butter, melted • 2 teaspoons all-purpose flour Blueberry Oat Muffins

• 1 1/3 cups buttermilk • 2 eggs • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats (uncooked)

• 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup granulated sugar • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 cup fresh blueberries Tools Wilton Non-Stick Muffin Pan, Cupcake liners, Mixing bowls Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare a cupcake pan with liners.

In a small bowl, combine all streusel ingredients and stir until the mixture is sandy and set aside.

In a large bowl, combine buttermilk, eggs, oil and vanilla.

Stir in oats and let soak for 15 minutes.

In a medium bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt.

Pour dry ingredients into wet ingredients and mix just until flour is moistened. Gently fold in blueberries. Do not overmix.

Divide batter evenly into the prepared pan. Sprinkle streusel over top of each muffin.

Bake for 16-19 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of muffin comes out clean.

Cool for 15 minutes in the pan. Serve warm or at room temperature. k

elping children understand the world of healthcare can make a big difference in how they feel about visiting a doctor, going to the hospital, or taking care of their own well-being. Author and healthcare professional Nicole Jacobsen is on a mission to make these experiences less intimidating and more empowering through her Leo Learns About Healthcare children's book series.

Kiddos Magazine had the wonderful opportunity to interview Nicole Jacobsen, healthcare professional, author, and creator of the Leo Learns About Healthcare children's book series.

Through her inspiring work, Nicole is helping children better understand healthcare in a fun, approachable, a nd age-appropriate way.

Her books introduce young readers to important topics such as hospitals, medical procedures, mental health, and healthcare careers, empowering them with knowledge while helping to reduce fear and anxiety. Nicole's mission is to spark curiosity, build confidence, and inspire the next generation to learn more about the world of healthcare.

We are excited to share our conversation with Nicole and learn what inspired her to create this unique and educational book series for children.

KM: What inspired you to create the Leo Learns About Healthcare book series?

Nicole Jacobsen: The series actually began with my nephew and godson, Leo. I wanted to write books that would help him understand healthcare in a fun, comforting way while encouraging

his natural curiosity. As I wrote for Leo, I realized these stories could also help children everywhere feel more confident about healthcare and maybe even inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

KM: Why is it important for children to learn about healthcare at an early age?

Nicole Jacobsen: When children understand what healthcare professionals do, they often feel less afraid and more confident during medical experiences.

Early education also encourages healthy habits and curiosity about helping others.

KM: How do your books help children feel less afraid of doctors, hospitals, and medical procedures?

Nicole Jacobsen: The stories introduce healthcare through friendly characters, simple explanations, and positive experiences. By making unfamiliar situations feel familiar, children can approach healthcare with greater confidence.

KM: What do you hope children and parents take away from your books?

Nicole Jacobsen: I hope families have meaningful conversations about healthcare and that children realize hospitals are places filled with people

who care about helping them. I also hope they discover that healthcare can be an exciting career path.

KM: What inspires you to teach kids about healthcare and encourage them to explore these important topics?

Nicole Jacobsen: Every day I see the impact that compassionate healthcare professionals have on patients' lives. If my books can spark curiosity, reduce fear, or inspire even one child to dream about a future in healthcare, then I've accomplished my goal.

KM: What makes the Leo Learns About Healthcare series different from other children's books?

Encouraging Creativity in the Age of AI Source: Crayola

I

n an era when machines can generate ideas in seconds, handson learning and creativity may be more important for today’s children than ever. In fact, due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), 73% of parents believe creativity is an essential trait for their children to develop.

This finding comes from a survey commissioned by Crayola and conducted

by Talker Research of 2,000 U.S. parents of children ages 8-12, along with children in that same age range. The survey also revealed the impact of technological advances, such as AI, on how parents nurture their kids’ creativity and how kids and parents view AI differently.

While parents worry about what skills kids may lose due to AI usage, children themselves are more focused on what technology could unlock and seem to be far more optimistic about the impact of AI. According to the study, 35% of parents said they worry AI will reduce their

child’s ability to think creatively and 30% fear it will compete with them, limiting their opportunities in the workforce. In contrast, only 22% of kids share their parents’ concerns about AI hurting their creative thinking abilities and only 21% fear job competition.

Consider these additional trends identified in the survey.

Kids Crave Hands-On Creativity Despite growing up in a digital-first world, the children surveyed expressed a strong desire to engage in hands-on creative experiences. When they make something by hand, they’re more likely to preserve it (46%), display it at home (68%) or give it as a gift (48%), turning creativity into something tangible, lasting and meaningful.

The children surveyed also said they want adults to ask for their creative ideas and listen to them (52%), provide

supplies for creating (51%), encourage problem-solving (47%) and give them more time to create (46%).

Feedback Provides Motivation Creativity flourishes when adults praise young artists for their effort, ideas and decision-making rather than judging how “good” the art looks, the survey found. While the least creatively motivating feedback parents can provide is to tell kids their art looks good (22%), creating with parents or other family members (65%), having their art displayed (45%) and being recognized for the work involved (46%) were some of the most motivating actions.

“When we emphasize effort, process and thinking over outcomes, kids feel safer taking creative risks,” said Cheri Sterman, senior director of education at Crayola.

“Research – and kids themselves – are pointing us toward a more supportive way to nurture creativity in the age of AI.”

Everyday Moments of Creativity Adults can nurture creativity by weaving simple, creative moments into daily routines. That belief is at the heart of efforts like Crayola’s Create More Creative Moments initiative, which has sparked conversations about why creativity matters and how it shapes children’s future success.

Purposeful support from parents and teachers also helps to minimize speed bumps that may interfere with kids’ creative growth. This belief is deeply personal with 8 in 10 parents polled admitting they wish the adults in their lives had done more to nurture their creativity when they were children.

Creativity is Essential to Future Success In a world increasingly shaped by AI, parents recognize creativity as one of the few skills machines can’t easily replicate with the majority of respondents (85%) agreeing that creativity equates to success for children in the future. In

fact, creative individuals were viewed as stronger problem-solvers (49%), better communicators (35%) and more likely to succeed in their careers (34%) than non-creatives.

“As AI continues to insert itself into our lives, this study suggests that creativity won’t disappear, but warns that nurturing it must be intentional,” Sterman said. “For parents and educators, the challenge isn’t resisting technology, but ensuring imagination, experimentation and original thinking remain central to how children grow up alongside it.”

Consider these kid-tested creative experiences to boost imagination and creative confidence:

• Sketch during an outdoor walk.

• Draw a new book cover.

• Make up a new ending to a story.

• Write new song lyrics.

• Plan meal theme nights and experiment with new recipes as a family.

• Turn errands into small games.

• Ask “what if…?” to help children imagine. k
