Celebrate Mom Right: 9 Meaningful Ideas She’ll Love

Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to slow down and celebrate Mom, or a mother figure in your life, with the love, intention, and time together that she deserves. It doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. Whether you’re creating something by hand, sharing an experience, or simply being present, here are 8 heartfelt ways to make the day truly special:

1Breakfast in Bed

Start the day with a simple but

thoughtful surprise—breakfast in bed! Let the kids help prepare her favorite foods, whether it’s pancakes, eggs, or fresh fruit. Try using different foods to make a heart, or smiley face! Add a handwritten note or drawing for a personal touch that she’ll treasure.

2Nature

Walk & Picnic

Spend time together outdoors with a peaceful walk in a local park, along the beach, or even around your neighborhood. Bring a

picnic and enjoy the fresh air, conversation, and connection. Take photos along the way—you can turn them into a scrapbook or memory album later.

3A Day to Create Together

Sign up for a family cooking class or spend time cooking a special meal together at home. Trying something new as a family creates connection, laughter, and shared memories—and Mom gets to enjoy the experience, not just the result.

4

Plan a visit to a local museum, science center, or cultural spot and spend the day learning and exploring together. It’s a fun way to mix quality time with curiosity and inspiration— something the whole family can enjoy.

5DIY Spa Day

Turn your home into a relaxing retreat! Light candles, play calming music, and set up a simple spa experience with face masks, nail painting, or a gentle hand massage. It’s a chance for Mom to relax—and for everyone to slow down and spend time together.

6Handmade with Love

Encourage kids to create something from the heart—a card, drawing, or

gifts often become the most meaningful keepsakes because they reflect the love, effort, personality, and creativity that went into making them.

7Cozy Movie Night

End the day with a cozy movie night. Let Mom choose her favorites, grab some popcorn, and settle in together. Sometimes the simplest moments—just

being close and present—are the ones that matter most.

Plant a Garden

Spend time together as a family planting a garden in her honor. Whether it's a small herb garden on the windowsill, a flower bed, or a backyard vegetable patch, gardening is a fun and rewarding activity for everyone. Let the kids choose their favorite flowers or vegetables to plant, and enjoy watching them grow and bloom over time.

A Special Tribute

For mothers and mother figures who are no longer with us, take time to honor their memory in a meaningful way. Plant a tree, create a small memorial garden, look through photo albums, or light a candle and share stories together as a family. Remembering them keeps their love alive in a beautiful, lasting way.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, what means most is the intention and LOVE behind it. A thoughtful moment, shared laughter, or a quiet “thank you” can mean everything. Mother’s Day isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence, appreciation, and love. k

May Is National Mental Health Awareness Month

A Moment for Moms to Pause, Reflect, and Heal

May brings blooming flowers, the promise of summer, and an important reminder for every family: it’s National Mental Health Awareness Month. This month shines a light on trauma and the profound impact it can have on the emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing of our children, our families, and the communities we cherish.

For mothers, this month offers a gentle invitation to slow down and reflect on something we often overlook: our own mental wellness. Between juggling school pickups, meal prep, work responsibilities, and endless to-do lists, it’s easy for moms to prioritize everyone else’s needs first. But your well-being is the foundation your family stands on.

What Wellness Really Means - for You and Your Family

Wellness isn’t a destination - it’s an active, ongoing process. It means

becoming aware of how you truly feel and making choices that support a healthier, more joyful life. If we were physically hurt, we wouldn’t hesitate to seek care. The same compassion must extend to our emotional lives.

Experiencing stress, burnout, anxiety, or sadness doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human. And it means support could help you feel balanced, strong, and whole again.

Care Resource is Ready to Support Mothers and Families

At Care Resource, their team understands the delicate connection between emotional health, physical health, and the challenges families face every day. Their therapists are:

• Registered and licensed Clinical Social Workers

• Mental Health Counselors

• Marriage and Family Therapists

Each holds a master’s degree and brings extensive expertise in how chronic health conditions, family stress, and emotional strain can affect mental well-being.

can help you reach your goals.

Getting Support Is Simple—and You Deserve It

Making an appointment is easy, and their Client Support Assistants are ready to guide you every step of the way. You’ll be matched with a Clinical sCounselor who fits your needs.

Whether you’re a mom needing a listening ear, a child needing help navigating big feelings, or a family seeking ways to grow stronger together, their therapists

This May, take a moment for yourself. Take a breath. And remember seeking support isn’t a sign of weakness - it’s a gift to you, your children, and the future you’re building together.

When school’s out, Frost Science summer camps turn curiosity into discovery.

This summer, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science invites young explorers to dive into week-long STEM adventures, running June 8 through August 7. Campers will explore exciting topics such as astronomy, marine biology, robotics and more through engaging hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and creativity.

Families can choose from two convenient camp locations. At Frost Science in Downtown Miami, campers ages 5–15 enjoy immersive science experiences inside the museum’s dynamic learning environment. Older students can also participate in the Curator-in-Training program, designed especially for middle schoolers interested in science and museum careers.

In South Dade, Frost Science introduces Camp Curiosity, a new program hosted in partnership with Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces at Ron Ehmann Park. Designed for campers ages 5–9, the program includes weekly field trips to the museum, giving young scientists the opportunity to explore Frost Science’s world-class exhibitions.

With limited space available, families are encouraged to reserve early and give their children a summer filled with exploration, discovery and fun.

parenting-motherhood

How can I prepare myself, my kids and my husband for Mother’s Day when I am the stepmom? I recognize that being the stepmom sometimes is easy and sometimes it’s hard and often it’s awkward. My role is different than the biological mom and yet I am still the leading lady in my own home, so how do we make this all work for Mother’s Day?

First, I think it’s important to lower expectations and to not put too much pressure on anyone to make the day

perfect. We don’t want these days to be big emotional events, just try to make them enjoyable and have reasonable expectations for yourself and the family. Most likely your stepchildren will spend the actual day with their biological mom, and yet you can help prepare everyone for the day.

A few ideas would include:

• Ask your husband if there is anything he would like to do to help them prepare for the day, for their biological

mom and for you? If the children’s mom is not remarried or in a significant relationship, there may not be any other adult available to help the kids prepare gifts or cards. Though it is not your job to do this, brainstorming ways to make it fun for the kids is a blessing you can offer to the children because you love the kids.

• Your husband may want to talk to their mom to find out if there is an adult to help them prepare for the day. Some husbands may not see the need or significance in this; however, as a co-parent, it is important to talk to the other parent about anything important that impacts the children. It would be a healthy co-parent expression to simply ask the question a few weeks in advance and offer to help the kids prepare for the day, again because he cares about the kids.

• Offer to take them shopping to get their mom a gift or a craft they can work on to give her.

• Verbally express your support of their mom. It actually helps children love you (stepmom) more when you affirm the love they have for their mom. When they don’t have to pick favorites, it helps them relax and love everyone in their extended families.

• Remind kids that you are not there to replace anyone and that you are thankful they have a mom that loves them.

• As for your own household, consider a special meal or outing the week prior or post to the actual Mother’s Day weekend.

• Another important thing to remember as a stepmom is that we often don’t see the fruit of our labor until years, maybe decades, later.

Some of the hardest years are right in front of us while the long-term view of life and loving relationships is often forgotten. We often want to see a microwave family come together quickly, be fully bonded, and always feel connected to our stepkids. The reality is that it takes years to build the bond between kids and stepparents; the positive payoff is not always immediate but becomes clearer as the stepchildren become adults and become parents themselves.

us, and strive to be the one who leads with the most loving attitude of all.

What can you proactively do this year to make Mother’s Day a blessing for everyone in your family?

Family First is a non-profit organization that provides parenting, marriage, and relationship resources through All Pro Dad, IMom and Family Minute programs, that help people love their family well, and gives them greater hope for the future. For more information visit www.familyfirst.net

This beginner-friendly recipe uses easy steps and simple tools, making glutenfree baking approachable.

• 1/2 cup plain non-fat Greek yogurt

• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

• 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

• 1 tablespoon lemon zest

For the Glaze:

and creamy. Add flour mixture into the wet ingredients and mix until well combined, but be careful not to overmix.

4Distribute the batter evenly between the prepared cavities in the fluted pan. The cups should be almost full. Tip: You can pipe the batter into the cups for less messy distribution.

5Bake in the preheated oven for 16-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden and a toothpick inserted into the center of one of the mini cakes comes out clean.

6Cool mini cakes in the pan on a wire cooling grid for 5 minutes. Remove the mini cakes from the pan, flip over, and allow to cool completely on the wire cooling grid.

Prep: 20 min Total Time: 1 hr. 10 mins

Skill Level: Beginner. Yield: 12 Servings

Ingredients

For the Mini Cakes:

• Nonstick cooking spray

• 3 cups almond flour, spooned and leveled

• 1 1/2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar, or more as needed

• 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice, or more as needed

• 1 tablespoon half-and-half

• Optional: Lemon zest, for garnish

Tools:

• Wilton Gold 12-Cavity Mini Fluted Tube Pan

• Wire cooling grid

Instructions

1Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Generously grease the cavities of a 12-cavity Mini Fluted Pan with nonstick cooking spray.

2Sift almond flour, baking powder, and baking soda together into a bowl and set aside.

3Mix sugar, eggs, Greek yogurt, but ter, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon of lemon zest in a bowl with an electric mixer until smooth

7While the mini cakes are cooling, whisk confectioners' sugar, 2 tablespoons of the lemon juice, and half-and-half together in a small bowl to make a thick glaze. If the glaze is too thick, gradually whisk in a little more lemon juice until your desired consistency. If the glaze is too thin, whisk in more confectioners' sugar as needed until your desired consistency. Drizzle the cooled cakes with the glaze, and if desired, garnish with additional lemon zest.

5 tips to make holiday hosting simple

Easter signals springtime and provides an opportunity to gather with loved ones to celebrate. However, hosting the get-together – whether brunch, lunch or dinner – requires planning and preparation to ensure the event is enjoyable.

From the guest list and menu to the decor and activities for the kiddos, consider these steps to get ready for Easter hosting duties.

1Make a Guest List

When planning your gathering, first think about how many people your space can accommodate. Ensure there’s a place for everyone to sit and eat, even if that means bringing in extra tables and chairs or designating a “kids table” so all the adults can sit together. Once you know how many people you can invite – and have a plan for seating – send out festive invitations or create a group on social media with your preferred guests to gather RSVPs.

2Take Inventory of Necessities

Once you have your guest list set, take inventory of serving dishes, utensils, linens and glassware. Depending on the number of guests, you may need to invest in extra supplies or borrow from a friend or relative to ensure you have everything you need. If you don’t have enough of one set of plates and flatware, mixing and matching is a trendy move and can serve as an additional aspect of your decor.

3Plan the Menu

When setting your menu, traditional favorites like ham or lamb are almost always a hit but remember to consider

vegetarian guests. Dishes featuring eggs, carrots, ginger and other ingredients that call spring to mind like quiches, soups, galette and more can be a perfect complement to the traditional main course. Serving the meal family-style with platters and bowls for everyone to share or hosting a potluck with guests bringing assigned dishes can help reduce the stress of trying to prepare the entire meal yourself.

4Keep the Kids in Mind

While the meal is likely a highlight of the event for many, the younger guests often look forward to the activities, such as decorating eggs or an Easter egg hunt. You can hard-boil eggs

station, complete with dyes, markers, stickers and more. Or while you’re finishing up inside, designate another adult or older children to hide pre-filled plastic eggs around the yard (weather permitting) and manage the hunt.

5Decorate in Advance

From a seasonal wreath on the front door to a well-dressed table complete with place settings and a festive centerpiece, getting your decorating done early can not only reduce stress on the day of your event but also get you into the proper mindset for the celebration. A pastel or light-colored hue can add to the springtime vibes, and flowers, seasonal fruits in bowls and decorated eggs can all add to the tablescape. k

kids and teens

The Standard American Diet Is SAD! Kids today rely on ultra-processed food for many reasons. One of those reasons is that too many kids are not taught how to cook at a young age and become exposed to this very unhealthy way to eat. Introducing children to the kitchen at an early age opens up a world of invaluable skills and experiences that can influence their health and happiness for a lifetime. The Real Food Academy stands at the forefront of this culinary revolution, advocating for a return to real, wholesome food. Here, we delve into five compelling reasons why kids should learn to cook, emphasizing the transformative power of culinary education in nurturing independence, health, safety, academic growth, creativity, and family bonds.

• Independence: Mastering the basics of cooking empowers children to take

care of their dietary needs, reducing their dependence on unhealthy fast food and processed snacks. It's an essential step towards self-sufficiency and appreciating the effort that goes into meal preparation.

• Health and Nutrition: Cooking classes are a fun, interactive way to teach children about nutrition and the benefits of a balanced diet. This foundational knowledge is key to making informed food choices, steering clear of diet-related health issues, and promoting a lifetime of wellness.

• Safety Skills: The kitchen can be a hazardous place without the proper knowledge. Cooking classes equip children with the necessary safety skills, from knife handling to the safe operation of kitchen appliances and understanding the risks associated with heat and fire.

• Math and Science in Action: Cooking is math and science brought to life. Children learn about measurements and fractions and witness the magical chemical reactions that occur during cooking, making these subjects exciting and relevant.

• Creativity and Exploration: The kitchen is a playground for the imagination. Children are encouraged to experiment with different ingredients, textures, and flavors, fostering a lifelong love for culinary exploration and creativity.

• Family Time: Cooking together provides a wonderful opportunity for family bonding. It's a chance to step away from digital distractions and engage in a meaningful activity that everyone can enjoy, creating lasting memories and strengthening family connections.
