News & Views It’s time to ‘take on Cancer’ as Race For Life launches in Colchester

Colchester women are being urged to join forces and show cancer who’s boss by signing up to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2014, which is now open for entries. Every day, around 83 people are diagnosed with cancer in the East of England*. Every one of those is special - somebody’s mum, dad, brother, sister, friend or colleague. That’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on Colchester women of all ages, shapes and sizes, to defy this dreadful disease by entering Race For Life 5k event at Castle Park on Sunday, July 20th. Event organisers are issuing the rallying cry ‘Cancer, we’re coming to get you!’ and urging women to sign up as soon as possible. Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k events which raise millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research. Last year, 2,826 women took part in Race for Life at Castle Park and raised a fantastic £157,752. This year, organisers need 3,000 women and girls to stride out to help raise £145,000.

World Book Day

Thanks to National Book Tokens and lots of lovely book publishers and booksellers, World Book Day, in partnership with schools all over the country, will be distributing more than 14 million £1 World Book Day book tokens to children (that’s almost one for every child/young person under 18 in the UK and Ireland). When you get your book token, all you need to do is to take it to your local bookshop (there’s lots of them out there - find your local participating bookshop on their website) and swap it for one of the ten exclusive, new and completely free £1 World Book Day books pictured below! Or, if you’d prefer, you can use your book token to get £1 off any full price book instead! And if you’d rather get an audio book, that’s fine too! So that’s £1 off any book or audio book, it’s your choice, just as long as it would normally cost at least £2.99. Then all YOU have to do is take your book home and enjoy it.

Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the East of England. Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking work but with help from local people, the charity intends to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. To enter Race for Life today go to www.raceforlife.org or call 0845 600 6050. *Approximation based on annual average figure of around 30,300 cases of all cancers (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) diagnosed 2008-2010 in the Eastern Government Office Region.

News & Views Colchester’s Top Tourist Attraction Re-opens Colchester’s most famous attraction, Colchester Castle, will re-open to the public on 2 May to the delight of many parents, children and visitors from around the globe.

The museum, closed since March 2013, has undergone a major £4.2 million redevelopment programme, which was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the European Regional Development Fund as part of the EU Norman Connections project, Colchester Borough Council, Ipswich Borough Council, Renaissance, Friends of Colchester Museums, Essex Heritage Trust and Friends of Colchester Roman Wall. During the refurbishment, essential remedial works were done to the fabric of the Castle, including masonry repairs, roof insulation, rewiring, new public toilets, the installation of underfloor heating and a new lift. All essential to ensure the 1,000 year-old Norman Keep is around for future generations to enjoy. The new look Museum will offer access to and interpretation of fascinating collections that hold national and international significance. Visitors will be able to unlock the stories contained in the building and its collections through the innovative use of modern technology.  Visitors will also be able to download an app onto their own mobile device or hire tablet computers, which will recreate the Norman Castle interiors and animate the collections.  At regular intervals there will also be a gigantic son et lumiere projection that will fill an entire internal wall. This will dramatically evoke key moments from the 2,000 year history of this site and recreate the lost internal structures of the Castle.

A series of events have been planned for children and families, which will run throughout the summer holidays. The full activities programme for the Castle, Natural History Museum, Hollytrees, Ipswich Museum, Christchurch Mansion and Ipswich Art School will be available on the Colchester and Ipswich Museums website www. cimuseums.org.uk/whatson or you can pick up a copy of the latest events leaflet at any of the Museums’ six venues. The Battle of the Ages - Enter a special competition to design a chariot! A spectacular modern day chariot race - the Battle of the Ages - will be staged in Colchester Castle’s Bailey on 7 June 2014. Six teams will represent the different eras which have seen the Castle flourish or falter. Romans v Iceni, Normans v Saxons and Roundheads v Cavaliers – these teams will be racing modern-day chariots to claim victory. Which team will you be backing? Enter the competition to design one of the chariots, follow the teams on Facebook and Twitter to win prizes and visit battleoftheages.co.uk for more information on how you can get involved. Local primary schools, community groups and the general public are invited to enter this fantastic competition to design one of the chariots for the race and win great prizes. Felsted School- 100% ‘Excellent’ say ISI Inspectors

Felsted School has recently been acknowledged in a glowing 2013 Independent Schools Inspectorate Report. Judged to be ‘excellent’ in each of the tough ISI standards, the Senior School now joins the Preparatory School, who achieved the same in 2011, in this rare accolade across two schools. Inspectors commented: ‘Felsted is a thriving and distinctive educational community which engenders great loyalty in pupils, staff and parents. Pupils are very well educated, are reflective, ambitious, life-long learners with high levels of emotional and intellectual skills and knowledge.’ ‘Felsted’s broad and well-planned curriculum, particularly for ICT, combined with a very extensive range of co-curricular activities, produces well rounded pupils who are ready to accept life’s changes. Parents are fully supportive of the school and are overwhelmingly positive about the impact the school has on their children’s lives. They expressed very high levels of satisfaction with regard to the care, safety and happiness of their children.’ This glowing report comes at a particularly momentous time for Felsted, as it celebrates 450 years of education, one of only a handful of schools in the country to reach this historic milestone. A special Service of Celebration will be held at St.Paul’s Cathedral for all pupils, staff, parents and former pupils, along with many other 450th anniversary events throughout 2014. Based on a stunning 90 acre site near Dunmow in North Essex, Felsted offers pupils aged four to eighteen a broad and vibrant curriculum with the flexibility of day, flexi, weekly and full boarding options, plus bus routes from across the region. A few places remain available for entry in September 2014, so please make contact soon if you wish to find out more. Prospective parents and their children are welcome to visit Felsted at any time by appointment, or to attend their next Open Morning on Saturday 10th May 2014, at 9.30am. For further information, please visit www.felsted.org or contact our Admissions Office on 01371 822610 (ages 4 to 12) or 01371 822605 (ages 13-18).

Schools St Mary’s School

A happy place for girls to learn, thrive and grow!

As all parents know, when their children are happy at school they’re more likely to do well in their lessons and to make the most of all the opportunities life has to offer. St Mary’s School for Girls in Colchester has more than a hundred years’ experience of creating a safe, fun, happy environment where girls aged three to sixteen (and boys aged three to four) can develop and learn at their own pace and discover the talents and interests that will last a lifetime. Every child at St Mary’s receives just the right amount of support, encouragement and challenge to settle well, enjoy school and achieve their very best. In the year before they start school, children and their parents are invited to go along to regular sessions in the bright Reception class, to meet the experienced Early Years teachers and to familiarise themselves with the school. By the time they join St Mary’s, new pupils are comfortable in their surroundings and their teachers have already got to know and understand them. Many enjoy some time in the purpose-built Kindergarten in the school, which gives girls and boys aged rising-three to four years a flying start to education, with an emphasis on early reading and number skills, as well as dance, drama, art and outdoor sessions to build their confidence and social skills. There is a real emphasis on nurturing each individual at St Mary’s. Classes are small and each girl receives the help, support and encouragement she needs to achieve her academic potential. The results are excellent – SATs scores are among the best in the country, while GCSE results are consistently better than at any other independent school in north Essex. But school is not only about exam success at St Mary’s. Lessons are brought to life with trips, competitions and lively activities. Girls develop their artistic and creative talents and there are regular concerts, drama and dance productions, fashion shows and art displays. They’re also encouraged to be healthy and active - Lower School pupils enjoy gymnastics, swimming, tennis, forest school and even Indian dance and street jazz as well as all sorts of sports, while senior girls compete at a high local level in sports and can take part in exciting challenges such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and outdoor adventures. St Mary’s has a caring, happy and well-disciplined atmosphere and every girl is encouraged to play an active part in school life – girls take their work seriously but there’s also a lot of laughter and fun! St Mary’s spring open days: Senior School (girls 11-16): Wednesday 5 March 10.30-12.30, Thursday 6 March 1.45-3 & Saturday 8 March 12-3 Lower School (girls 4-11) and Kindergarten (girls and boys 3-4): Thursday 20 March 9.30-11.30 & Saturday 22 March 9.30-12 For more information, please visit www.stmaryscolchester.org.uk or telephone the registrar, Justine Tierney, on 01206 216420.

Unlocking pupils’ talents

Making music at the Snape Concert Hall, playing hockey in national finals, making their own pudding at a girls’ evening or raising money for charity – girls and boys at Ipswich School and Ipswich Preparatory School have every opportunity to find and develop their talents. Class sizes are small, which means there is a focus on hard work and achievement, and support to make sure that pupils thrive in a positive environment. Over half of Ipswich School’s A level students received A* or A grades in the Summer 2013 exams and at GCSE level the results were similarly impressive, with over 68% of exams awarded A* or A grades. The school’s co-curricular activities outside the classroom are just as important as they help to build confidence and team spirit. Excellent music, drama and sport make the most of facilities such as a concert hall with a Steinway grand piano, an indoor swimming pool and a new Olympic blue all-weather hockey pitch and other sports facilities nearby at Rushmere. There is also a boarding house, with a range of flexible boarding options available alongside full boarding. The purpose-built Preparatory School provides a supportive, happy environment for younger pupils, whilst they also make use of the senior school facilities. The recent Independent Schools Inspectorate report said the school is “…a secure and caring environment where each pupil is valued and nurtured to become balanced, confident, considerate and fulfilled.” Parents are encouraged to come and see Ipswich School in action, to see how the wide variety of activities on offer will help their sons and daughters to fulfil their potential. Schools Oxford House School

“Labore confecto Gaudentes”. Joy in Achievement is the school motto.

Oxford House is a traditional nursery and preparatory school for girls and boys aged two and a half to eleven years. Founded in 1959, this intimate and exclusive school offers every child a complete education that puts a high emphasis on traditional values and the child-centred learning of the Montessori teaching methods. The school encourages high standards in behaviour and manners as well as in academic achievement. Oxford House prides itself in achieving a high success rate in both private and state-selective schools, and during the final years, pupils undergo studies geared to prepare them for external scholarship and 11+ examinations. The school aims to understand and develop the potential which all children possess and to send them on to senior schools as literate, numerate, well-mannered and happy individuals. The broad curriculum is enriched by instilling a love for literature, modern languages, music and dance. Music is a strength and optional instrumental tuition is offered. Oxford House teachers pride themselves on producing confident and articulate children. There is a mutual respect between teachers and pupils which is demonstrated by the kind and polite way those at Oxford House treat each other. Healthy eating and exercise also play an important role, with freshly prepared vegetarian meals served daily. A sensible balance of PE and sports allows swimming all year round with hockey, tag rugby, football and athletics in season. Oxford House School, 2-4 Lexden Road, Colchester, CO3 3NE. Holmwood House

Holmwood House School and Nursery’s ‘overall quality and standards of the early years provision are outstanding’ according to ISI inspectors. The staff at the independent school in Lexden, Colchester and Nursery in Great Horkesley, are thrilled to have received such a glowing Early Years ISI report, following the inspection that took place in November, in which the school was found to be outstanding in every area assessed. The inspectors found that ‘all children.....make strong progress in relation to their abilities, needs and starting points and they are very well prepared for the next stage of their learning’. Alexander Mitchell, Headmaster of Holmwood House School said, “We are delighted that the inspectorate found us to be outstanding in all areas of our provision at the nursery and in the Reception classes at the school. We work very hard at Holmwood to provide an education which is second to none and to have ISI’s stamp of approval is the icing on the cake.” This success follows on from the news a few months ago that the school was one of just a handful in the county to be selected for entry in The Good Schools Guide. Prospective parents are invited to the school’s next Open Morning which is taking place on Friday 14 March from 9.30am until 11.30am. This opportunity will allow visitors to experience a normal school day, meet the staff and pupils and have a tour of the school to see the outstanding facilities. For further information or to arrange a personal visit at an alternative time, please call the Admissions Registrar, on 01206 574305, e-mail admissions@holmwood.essex.sch.uk or visit the websitewww.holmwood.essex.sch.uk

Elephant’s Ears By Grace Webster

Congratulations to Colchester High School pupil Grace Webster! Elephant’s Ears by Grace Webster was recently published in the Collins Big Cat reading series as a result of Grace winning the 2013 Collins Big Cat Writing Competition. Grace was encouraged to enter the competition by her class teacher at Colchester High School. The Collins Big Cat Writing Competition is an annual fiction writing competition for all children in Years 5 and 6. The children can write either a poem or story that would be suitable for children in Year 1. The two winning entries are made into a published book with illustrations by a professional artist. Grace’s story, Elephant’s Ears, is about an elephant who was frightened to go to the hairdresser’s and was praised by the Judge, Berlie Doherty, for its humour and originality. When asked what inspired her, Grace explained “I came up with the idea of the book when we were reading to Year 2 pupils and I was reading a jungle book. I also based all the characters on my friends. At the time I was writing I had a very long fringe and my Dad kept nagging me to have it cut. I also liked repetitive stories when I was little. So that’s how I got the idea”. Collins Big Cat offers a range of children’s books from top authors who understand exactly what inspires and motivates children to read. Grace’s book “Elephant’s Ears” is now available in all leading bookshops and on line.

National Walking Month is dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness of the benefits of walking. Running from 1 May, it incorporates Walk to Work Week (12-16 May) and Walk to School Week (19-23 May). For four weeks, Living Streets is encouraging people across the UK to enjoy walking their way, be it walking to work, raising money for their favourite charity or walking their children to school. The opportunities are endless. To help you walk safely, The Co-operative is giving away a free Walking Bus Kit for your school! Small steps can make a big difference. The proportion of British children aged five to ten who walk to school has fallen nearly 20% in the last 20 years. The Co-operative’s Walking Bus initiative is great for the environment and encourages children to get to know each other whilst enjoying a burst of fresh air and exercise. Since 2007, over 600 Walking Buses have been set up through this project - fancy following in their footsteps? Apply now for your chance to qualify for a free Walking Bus Kit with equipment worth up to £1,000 These kits include: •

Up to 40 junior or infant high-viz vests

Up to 10 adult high-viz vests

A banner for the school railings to promote the bus to families

Posters to promote the bus within the school

50 hi-viz snapbands to use as rewards for walkers

There are hundreds of animals to meet, feed, handle and make friends with including sheep, husky dogs, reindeer, pygmy goats, giant rabbits, rare breed pigs, long-necked llamas and a loveable meerkat family.

Julia Donaldson, author of children’s modern classics such as The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, Princess Mirror-Belle and The Troll, has worked with Seven Stories National Centre for Children’s Books to bring these best-selling children’s captivating stories to life, allowing visitors to enter the imagination of this much-loved author and discover how she inspires her readers with story, rhyme and rhythm. Julia’s journey can be followed from song-writer for children’s television to Children’s Laureate 2011-2013. Families can share stories, cuddle the Gruffalo, crawl into the Squash and a Squeeze House, climb into Cave Baby’s cave and enjoy dressing up and looking in the funny mirrors. They can follow in Toddle Waddle’s footsteps, and even sing-a-long to her songs on Julia’s Jukebox or perform a play on the special stage! Visitors can view the amazing original artwork by her many illustrators – most famously Axel Scheffler, but also Lydia Monks, David Roberts, Nick Sharratt, Karen George and Emily Gravett – a must for any art enthusiast. About the exhibition, Julia Donaldson said: “I am thrilled that my work, and that of my illustrators, is to be presented in such a stimulating and child-friendly way, with so many mini-words and activities. Because of my love of drama and song, I am particularly excited about the theatre and the juke box!” The Historic Dockyard will be running a number of engaging and exciting school holiday family activities, all inspired by the A Squash and a Squeeze exhibition (see Diary Dates section for more information)

There’s also a toboggan run, indoor and outdoor play areas, as well as the Orchard Café serving freshly prepared food.

Let’s Party Get your pans ready for Shrove Tuesday-4th March Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, is the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It is celebrated throughout the UK by the cooking and eating of pancakes - a last feast before the fasting and self-denial of Lent. In some places pancake races are held, where participants run along tossing a pancake as they go. To ensure the tastiest pancakes use this easy-to-follow recipe, which is great for the kids to make.

Pancake Ingredients 100g plain flour 2 eggs

Method

Put the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Crack the eggs into the middle, then pour in 300ml semi-skimmed milk about 50ml milk and 1 tbsp oil. Start vegetable or 1 tbsp sunflower oil (plus little extra for frying) whisking from the centre, gradually drawing the flour into the eggs, milk and oil. Once small pinch of salt all the flour is incorporated, beat until you have a smooth, thick paste. Add a little more milk if it is too stiff to beat. Continue adding splashes of milk and whisking until the mix is thick and creamy. Heat the pan on a medium heat, then wipe it with oiled kitchen paper. Ladle some mixture into the pan, tilting the pan to move the mixture around to each side for a thin and even round layer. Leave to cook, undisturbed, until it turn golden brown. Hold the pan handle, ease a fish slice under the pancake, then quickly lift and flip it over. Make sure the pancake is lying flat against base of the pan with no folds, then cook for another 30 secs before turning out onto a warm plate. First one never goes quite right, so use this as a tester and continue with the rest of the mixture, serving them as you cook or stack onto a plate. Eat with your choice of delicious fillings such as; lemon and sugar; Nutella, banana and ice cream or strawberries and cream.

Top tip: You can freeze the pancakes for 1 month, wrapped in cling film or make them up to a day ahead.

Active Kids

First Strokes have a fun-packed year ahead.

Over Christmas their centres started receiving some TLC, and there are lots more improvements planned for the coming year.

First Strokes thank all their customers who helped raise over £1,700 for Children In Need last November. Congratulations to all the swimmers who swam in their pyjamas over the week, some of whom appeared on TV, in newspapers and on the radio! Book your child’s pool party with First Strokes this year and they will throw in free balloons, invitations and a birthday cake for the special guest! For a limited time only, Peppa Pig can be seen in First Strokes centres, which now stock the exciting new range of Peppa Pig merchandise from Zoggs. The range includes Peppa and George Pig goggles, soakers, armbands, swim rings and inflatable noodles. Grab these great products while you can! Brand new First Strokes merchandise is also available including bags, towels and awards folders. The fantastic Awards Folders are the perfect safe place to keep all the certificates and stickers that your children have achieved throughout their lessons. They can also be used for any school “show and tell” and make a great keepsake to look back on when the children are older too. First Strokes will be running crash courses every half-term this year, with beginner, improver and advanced levels available. So, if a week-intensive course is what your little one needs to either get started, or to improve their skills, don’t hesitate to get them booked in! Don’t forget you can test your stamina with distance swims, which take place during every school holiday. Distances range from 5 metres up to 1 mile - can you go the distance? Parent and Child classes at First Strokes have benefited greatly from the ASA implementing a new advanced teacher award, which all First Strokes teachers will be undertaking. First Strokes are thrilled to now offer National Pool Lifeguard Qualification courses at the Stanway pool as well as the Billericay pool. This new addition to Stanway runs over three weekends instead of being a 5-day week-intensive course. As well as achieving your National Pool Lifeguard Qualification including AED, you will also obtain your First Aid at Work all in one course! First Strokes are working closely with the Institute of Swimming (IoS) and offering apprenticeship places for young adults from 16 years of age. This allows people to achieve their ASA Level 1 and Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Aquatics at the same time as gaining experience within the workplace and teaching environment. So much goes on at First Strokes! For any further information please visit www.firststrokes.com where you can find centre locations and contact details. Why not swim with First Strokes soon!

Stagecoach Theatre Arts

For anyone interested in performing, look no further than Stagecoach Theatre Arts. Stagecoach offers high-quality training in drama, dance and singing to young performers, building confidence and developing communication skills, while having FUN! No experience is necessary, the only requirement is enthusiasm. Sessions run every weekend during term time, with classes for youngsters aged 4-18 years. For 25 years, Stagecoach Theatre Arts has been dedicated to providing excellent performing arts education. High on the list of Stagecoach’s priorities is a desire that classes should be fun. However, at the same time, teachers are constantly striving for educational excellence. Young people are encouraged to develop and hone skills in singing, dancing and acting, to stretch their imaginations and learn to think creatively. The activities-group exercises, teamwork and performance- are great ways to increase confidence and develop presentation skills. Training in voice projection, character development, flexibility, co-ordination and improvisation help to build self-esteem, poise and articulation - qualities that will stand the students in good stead whatever they decide to do throughout their lives. 600 schools around the globe in 10 countries worldwide indicate that Stagecoach has a winning formula! However, a more subtle measure of Stagecoach’s ‘success’ lies in its provision that each school is also a safe space where students can take creative risks. A student who starts with an attitude of ‘I can’t’ almost always progresses to ‘I can’ and ‘I will’. Carefully trained Principals and dynamic teachers working to create an atmosphere of trust are key to this, as is the exciting curriculum that stimulates students to turn their ideas into performance expression. All Stagecoach staff are DBS checked and schools are visited regularly by independent inspectors to ensure the highest standards throughout the network. Alongside the regular weekly Stagecoach classes, students have the opportunity to appear in local, national and international events, and many have taken part in performances at The Royal Albert Hall, Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, Disneyland Paris and the largest ever staging of the musical “Cats” at the Birmingham NIA. There are also opportunities to take acting and musical theatre examinations, to take part in holiday workshops and masterclasses from visiting professionals, and to join an agency for those wishing to work professionally in film, television and on stage. Not every child who takes part at Stagecoach will go on to have a career in show business, but while they’re enjoying their time in the spotlight and making new friends, there is no doubt they are also building skills for life. To find out more, please get in touch with your local Stagecoach school - please see the advert below for contact details.

Active Kids Swim-With-Me Swim School Pledges commitment to high standards by signing up to STA Swim Star School Learner swimmers at Swim-With-Me can be assured they are getting the highest quality lessons after Swim-WithMe signed up for the STA Swim Star Swim School Programme. The programme, newly-launched by STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association), one of the world’s largest swim teaching and lifesaving organisations, is the first of its kind and is designed to help independent swimming schools achieve the highest standards of teaching. By signing up to it, Swim-With-Me, which teaches swimming at 5 venues in Essex – Colchester Academy, Lifestyle Health Club, Alresford School, Milldene School & Tollesbury Yachting Club – has committed to providing excellent standards and has pledged to maintain them through delivering the globally-renowned International Learn to Swim Programme. Theo Millward, Operations Director at STA, said the Swim Star programme will offer another level of reassurance to parents who entrust the care of their children to the swim schools. “We are thrilled to welcome Swim-With-Me to the Swim Star programme,” he said. “There are many excellent independent swim schools across the country but those signing up to our scheme, like Swim-With-Me, are providing extra assurance to their customers of their commitment to maintaining the highest of standards in teaching.” “Swim-With-Me are delighted and privileged to be working in partnership with the STA delivering the ILSP. Being recognised as one of the first Swim Star Swim Schools in the UK reinforces our commitment to ensuring our aquatic lessons are continually delivered through ‘Safety and Fun’.” To be accepted as an STA Swim Star, independent swim schools have to complete an online audit to ensure they adhere to minimum standards; demonstrate that they are actively working towards STAmark, an accreditation process; and commit to deliver its International Learn to Swim Programme. A-Star Sports

Leo King runs A-Star Sports in the local area. He provides weekly classes and sports-themed children’s parties in Colchester and North East Essex. His vision is to make sport as fun and enjoyable as possible for young children! Classes A- Star Sports’ award-winning weekly multi-sports classes are set in small class sizes which provide encouragement and support for your child to build the confidence, motivation and skills to enjoy sport in a number of ways. In the early stages, children are introduced to and follow a full programme of fundamentals, which then develops into their ten core sports: basketball, hockey, cricket, rounders, dodgeball, rugby, football, tennis, handball and volleyball. Learning in a positive, energy packed environment encourages children to enjoy sport and it is their ambition for every child at A-Star Sports to enjoy sport for life. Parties Your child can also enjoy an A-Star Sports party. For younger children aged 3+ years, the parties focus on fast-paced and fun games that keep children engaged throughout. For children 7+ years, they offer sports-based and / or themed parties for an action-packed multi-sports adventure!   A-Star Sports Parties features are: fun-filled and inclusive games, positive and engaging fun for girls and boys aged 3+ years, sports-based / themed parties for children 7+ years and flexible party numbers (depending on venue size and activity). Holiday Clubs Holiday clubs focus on a high-energy combination of games, sports and all-round award-winning active entertainment for children aged 3+. Small group sizes and step-by-step support in a positive environment, ensure your child will have a memorable multi-sports experience. Holiday clubs are run at various times throughout the year. Book Reviews

Meet the Parents by Peter Bentley and Sara Ogilvie rrp £6.99 www.simonandschuster.co.uk I really wanted to read this book because the front cover looked bright and funny and made me laugh.

The book was about all the different things that kids do to their parents. The pictures are funny and some of the story reminds me of some of the things my mum and I do. I liked the page where the children climb over the mummy, it is what I do to my mum. But the best bit was when they got tickled, it made me laugh. I read this book with my mummy and I would tell other children to read it too. Reviewed by Delilah-May Morrison, aged 5

Book Reviews Active Kids

This book was difficult to get into and a little hard for my age. It scared me a little to begin with when it was about Junk’s mother giving birth. However, once into the book it became more interesting and adventurous that you got lost in the characters. Junk is a brave young boy out on an adventure to find his lost sister taken during the night by the league of sharks. My favourite character was Garvan a large monster, who looked after and protected Junk and in time they became best friends. It was interesting how Garvan got the confidence to trust Junk from the tasks he set him to complete. Reviewed by Jack Turrell, aged 10

The Adventures of Shola by Bernardo Atxaga rrp £14.99 pushkinchildrens.com This book is about a dog called Shola and her owner and their adventures. There are four stories in this book. My favourite is ‘Shola and the Aunt from America’, which is about when Shola’s owner Senor Grogo’s Aunt comes and visits them from America. Shola thinks she is going to be very strict and make her wear a lead but it all turns out ok in the end. I thought this book was very good, because it was funny. I really enjoyed reading this book, and also reading it with my Mum. I would recommend this book to girls and boys age 6-10, although younger children may enjoy this story being read to them. Reviewed by Lachlan Johnson, aged 8

Julian, Secret Agent by Ann Cameron rrp £4.99 www.tamarindbooks.co.uk The story is about 3 children, called Julian, Huey and Gloria, who decide to become a crime busting team after seeing some wanted posters in the post office. They have lots of adventures and meet lots of interesting people in various places around their home town. The book was so good I burst out laughing sometimes when I was reading it. I especially liked it when they rescued a boy from a fountain. He was funny because he could only say “No”! I would recommend this book to children who like adventure stories and are between 5 and 9 years old. Reviewed by Eddie Pickwick, aged 6

Ghost Knight by Cornelia Funke rrp £6.99 www.orionbooks.co.uk This book is based on a boy named Jon who is haunted by ghosts. Jon left home to go to boarding school where he meets Ella and her Nan Zelda, who know everything about ghosts. One time Ella took Jon to see a knight called William Longenspee who helped Jon realise that he was the only person who could kill the bad ghost. Jon is adventurous, very interested in ghosts but also gets scared. Ella is very independent, likes to learn about ghosts and isn’t scared at all. I liked the way Jon and Ella used teamwork to fight Stourton (the bad ghost) and his army. This is a feisty book because all of the ghosts have a fight and I would recommend this book especially if you like world wars and history as most of the characters are from historian times. I couldn’t get my head out of the book. The age limit in my opinion is 8 and over. Reviewed by Lucy Collett, aged 9

My School Day by Ellen Crimi-Trent rrp £9.99 www.priddybooks.com ‘My School Day’ is a bright and colourful book that is great to share with a child one on one. The characters are fun and bring the concept of the passage of time from getting up in the morning to returning home after a school day alive. It provides plenty of prompts for the adult to engage with a child, and suggests fun activities. It would have been more realistic if the letters had been in lower case, with an awareness that phonetics are now used in school. A lovely introduction for any child about to start primary school. Reviewed by Reception class, Soaring High School, Coggeshall. Alphaprints ABC by Roger Priddy rrp £7.99 www.priddybooks.com

Myself and Ashlea have read this book several times and although she is too young to understand the nature of the book itself she does love the colours and the textured pages. The wooden pages make it easy for Ashlea to interact with the book and help turn the pages. She seems to be drawn particularly to the jellyfish. The book is hard wearing and can withstand Ashlea’s heavy hands of excitement. The colours are vibrant and the pictures are very large to grab Ashlea’s attention each time she turns the page. Very happy with this book and I’m sure it will last a long time. Reviewed by Ashlea Read, aged 7 months and her mum Tina

Wellbeing “How Do I Care for my Children’s Teeth?” 1. When should I take my children to the dentist?

It is recommended that children go to the dentist with their parents as soon as possible. You should take them on average once every six months, to let them get used to the noises, smells and surroundings and prepare them for future visits. The earlier visits begin, the more relaxed the child will be. 2. How should I clean their teeth? This year’s Children’s Hospice Week (running from 13th – 20th June) will focus on the incredible round-the-clock care provided to seriously ill children by families, professionals, children’s hospices and services across the UK. Children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions often have complex needs that require care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This can put enormous pressure on families, carers and siblings. Children’s hospices and palliative care services are there to provide a vital lifeline to families. They offer a wide range of services including short breaks, hospice at home care, 1:1 counselling services and activity days. For many families, a short break at a hospice might mean the only time they are able to get a proper night’s sleep. It gives them the time to relax as a family, with expert support day and night, and spend time together making precious memories. Join in with Children’s Hospice Week by fundraising for your local service and celebrate all the heroes who help care for seriously ill children. Because ‘We Care 24/7’. Children’s Hospice Week 2014 culminates with Hero Friday, which will be celebrating all the heroes who help care 24/7 for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. We all need heroes, so why not dress up as your hero and help raise money to provide 24/7 care for seriously ill children. It could be your favourite pop star, actor, sports personality or superhero. Or maybe your hero is a family member or friend that’s made a world of difference to you. To find out more about Children’s Hospice Week and other fundraising opportunities visit www.togetherforshortlives.org.uk/childrenshospiceweek

Cleaning your child’s teeth should be part of their daily hygiene routine. You may find it easier to stand or sit behind your child, cradling their chin in your hand so you can reach their top and bottom teeth more easily. When the first teeth start to come through, try using a children’s toothbrush with a small smear of toothpaste; it is important to supervise your child’s brushing until they are at least seven. Once all the teeth have come through, use a small-headed soft toothbrush in small circular movements, concentrating on one section at a time. Brush gently behind the teeth and onto the gums. If possible, make tooth brushing a routine – preferably in the morning, and last thing before your child goes to bed. Remember to encourage your child, as praise will often get results! 3. When do my child’s teeth come through? All children are different and develop at different rates. Teeth can also come through in a different order so do not be worried, as your dentist will be able to keep a check on your child’s teeth, and they will be able to highlight any developmental problems. Regular visits to the dentist are essential in helping your child to get used to the surroundings and what goes on there. A child can be much more anxious if it is their first visit to a dental practice. Pain and distress can happen at any time, and it is important to prepare your child with regular visits. If your child already has a good relationship with the dentist, it is much easier for the child, parent and dentist if treatment does become necessary later on. If you have any questions or concerns about your children’s teeth, then contact one of the team at The Dental Studio on 01206 845891.

Birth & Beyond

Lisa Clegg, the Blissful Baby Expert Photo © Juliana Johnston

Beginning to implement the sleep routine

the evening, just as colic is usually more likely to happen in the evenings.

Continuing her series of advice columns for KidAround, Lisa Clegg, author of The Blissful Baby Expert, shares her advice on the allimportant issue of sleep and her views on colic.

Out of all the hundreds of babies I have worked with, only one has genuinely suffered from colic and reflux connected to food allergy or intolerance.

More than anything, once you implement a sleep routine, it is very important that you keep track of the last time that your baby woke up.

This is because a very young baby has a breaking point where they can tip over into the realm of being overtired after a certain length of time awake. An overtired baby will be almost impossible to settle for hours on end, no matter what you try. Eventually they will just pass out through sheer exhaustion. However, they are more likely then to sleep fitfully and wake frequently. A parent who says their baby cries all evening, won’t go to sleep, and has been diagnosed by their doctor as having colic, could just have a baby that is becoming overtired each evening. Babies who are overtired will cry incessantly. Nothing you do will seem to settle them, and, even though they may drift in and out of sleep, they will continue to wake up again and resume their wailing. Many parents assume their baby must be in some sort of pain, and when they describe what is happening to their doctor, colic is diagnosed. This overtiredness is more likely to happen at the end of the day and go on into

Eventually, the final thing that settles the baby is usually allowing her to become hungry enough to take her 10:30pm feed. This usually makes her feel so full and sleepy that she will finally settle down as she is so exhausted from being awake for hours.

It is my belief that, if you implement a feeding and sleep routine from a young age, then your baby has no need to cry continuously for long periods of time. All of the baby’s physical needs are being met through being encouraged to feed regularly and the baby will be encouraged to sleep at times that work well with their body’s natural sleep rhythms. Babies don’t need to be so unhappy and I would be very worried if any of the babies I worked with were crying incessantly for long periods of time. Of course, babies cry, for varying reasons (that are explained later on in Lisa’s book), but continuous crying that cannot be appeased is always a concern. If your baby is following the feeding and sleep guide that I have suggested, but still crying for long bursts, then it is well worth seeing your GP to rule out any medical problem. The Blissful Baby Expert by Lisa Clegg is published by Vermilion priced £10.99. WIN! WIN! WIN! We have three copies of this invaluable book up for grabs for lucky readers to win! To be in with a chance of winning, please email your name, address and daytime telephone number to comps@kidaround.biz with Blissful Baby Expert in the subject line. The closing date is Friday 4th April 2014. Good luck!
