What are the key benefits of Apprenticeships?

An Apprenticeship is an employed position which includes training towards recognised industry qualifications. They are available in a wide range of industry areas. Apprentices:

• paid employment

• earn a wage

• national, industry-recognised qualifications

• work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills

• job-specific skills

• train off-the-job towards national industry qualifications, usually on day-release

• personal development

• paid holidays • quality training

Who are Apprenticeships for? Anyone can apply for an Apprenticeship provided they are:

How much do apprentices get paid? • Apprentices under 19 (or over 19 and in their first year of an Apprenticeship) are paid the national minimum wage for apprentices • Apprentices aged 19 and over should be paid the national minimum wage for their age band (unless they are in the first year of an apprenticeship).

Who pays for the training? • The Government pays for the training of all apprentices aged 16 to 18 • Employer contributions or alternative funding sources may be required for older apprentices

What part do employers and learning providers play? Your employer will provide your on-the-job training and pay your wages. A learning provider is a specialist training organisation or college who will deliver the rest of your training. The learning provider will appoint a mentor who will follow your progress and work with the employer to ensure your training is well planned.

Apprenticeships can take between one and four years depending on the level of apprenticeship, the apprentices’ ability and the industry sector.

All Apprenticeship learning providers are inspected by Ofsted on a regular basis. This means they operate to (and often exceed) minimum required standards for:

Does an Apprenticeship boost career prospects? Employers all over the country recognise and value apprentices because they know they have the industry skills they’re looking for. Many companies, large and small, use Apprenticeships as a way of recruiting school leavers and developing them as key members of staff. A large proportion of apprentices are kept on with their employer after their Apprenticeship has finished.

A programme for 14 to 19 year olds, offering a personalised agenda of training, resulting in nationally recognised qualifications up to Level 1. Learners develop a range of vocational and personal skills. After completing Foundation Learning, they can progress onto an Apprenticeship. Foundation Learning is available in schools and though the learning providers listed in the relevant section overleaf. Key to Apprenticeships Key to Apprenticeships is a short, full-time vocational programme for 16 to 18 year old school leavers. It’s designed to put them in prime position to apply for an Apprenticeship and succeed at interview. It’s ideal for those who have already decided what industry they want to work in, and have the ability to achieve a level 2 qualification. The Access to Apprenticeship programme is available through the learning providers listed in the relevant section overleaf.
