PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics By: Josy Rivera/cr The Winter Olympic Games are taking place in PyeongChang, South Korea. There is 2,900 athletes from 92 countries that will compete for 102 medals. The U.S. Olympic team was led into the Olympic Stadium by flag-bearer Erin Hamlin. The Winter Games run from February 9-25. The Paralympics will use many of the same facilities. The themes of the Opening Ceremony are harmony, convergence, passion, and peace. The ceremony starts with artful projections on the floor and a large group of costumed dancers. The dancers revolve around 5 children. Each child represents an Olympic Ring and element believed to make up the universe. The pentagonal shape of the stadium included a variety of different shapes including circles, squares, and triangles. The organizers say that these shapes represent heaven, mankind, and earth. Because of the shape, there will be five different entrances to the stage. During the Introductions, South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in, entered the stadium while the president of the International Olympic Committee , Thomas Bach, followed. The stage was empty until the sound of drums spark light, drummers bring the arena to life; their costumes change to blue and red, representing South Korea’s colors. This all leads to the presentation of the Korean flag, known as Taegeukgi. The Rainbow Choir sing the national anthem to send out a message of harmony through their music. In the parade of athletes, the team from Greece enters first. The South Korean team enters last alongside some North Korean athletes. They walk with a flag of unity of the Korean Peninsula. The other teams enter according to the Korean alphabet. The U.S. team are the 26th team to enter the stadium. Before the Olympics begin, 20,000 fireworks are released. The highest go more than 4,200 feet in the sky.

Lunar Eclipse By Matthew Palmer/sj Last week on January 31, there was a rare sight in the night sky. A super blue blood moon occurred and could be seen from the eastern hemisphere and parts of the western. This was a supermoon because the moon was close to Earth and it was red due to the fact that there was a lunar eclipse. The last super blue blood moon occurred on December 30, 1982, and the next will be on January 31, 2037. This is an amazing occasion and I would recommend seeing one in person because it is an amazing experience.

The Pointless Days Opinion By: Maximillian Rayner/kk

Since Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, I wanted to address something that’s been on my mind. I believe this holiday, and a few others are completely pointless, and defeat their own meaning. To start, of course, I shall talk about Valentine’s day; Valentine’s day is supposed to be about romance and love, and possibly a saint who was the ultimate lover. However, how romantic is it really to ask someone out or propose on a day that is one, so predictable, and two completely boring. If you need the courage to do those things from a holiday just like everyone else, then maybe you just shouldn’t and try instead to work on yourself to build self-confidence and steel your resolve. After all, what’s less romantic then unoriginality, plus it would also make a really dumb anniversary, also expensive. Speaking of expensive, Valentine’s day nowadays all about marketing and over pricing chocolate and fake roses, you know when I think love and romance I think overpriced candy and cards with roses on them. More importantly, why should we have to assign a day to tell the people we love how we feel, or let them know we appreciate them? Shouldn’t that be every day? I don’t mean to buy a box of chocolates or roses every day, but even if it’s something small, find a way to appreciate someone you love. Ultimate saint of love and romance aside, Valentine’s Day has defeated its own purpose, by making it seem like an obligation rather than what we want to do. The same goes with Christmas, nowadays it’s about giving and thinking of others, but why do we need a holiday to do those things? It’s kind of ridiculous that we would need any holiday to tell people to care about each other. Well, of course, there are the religious portions of holidays, but really, nowadays it’s not about that part at all. Naturally, there are exceptions, but I’m not discussing that part of holidays, what I’m talking about is the morals behind these holidays. I’m talking about how it defeats the purpose of the morals if there is a day where it is expected to act that way, when truly you should be like that every day. Do we really need an excuse to love, appreciate, give, and be thoughtful? Or can we just be loving, appreciative, giving, and thoughtful people, is that really so much to ask? Or do we really need these holidays to be decent people?

Space X’s New Rocket By Matthew Palmer/sj Space X has made a new reusable super heavy-lift launch vehicle called the Falcon 9 Heavy. The rocket was launched into space with Elon Musk’s Tesla car. The rocket has been designed with special reusable boosters that when fall can fire a thruster to land the booster safely. The rocket is 230ft tall and for a trip to mars could carry up to 37000lbs of payload. The rocket has only been launched once and was a success. The Falcon Heavy was designed to be able to take humans to the Moon and Mars but as of February 5, there are no plans for this rocket to be used for manned missions. This rocket is the start of a new generation and the start of a new space raced one that will hopefully take us to Mars, or even beyond.

This is a not Tide Ad

What Would You Do?

By Ryan Sisk/cr

By now I’m sure you have heard of the false missile alert in Hawaii. How about the tsunami and earthquake in Alaska? If you were in school or at work and all of your co-workers and friends received an alert on their phone saying that they need to evacuate or get somewhere safe.

During the Super Bowl LII there was series of commercials one of which was not a tide ad. There was a certain commercial that had a bunch of scenes that showed that the commercial was in fact not a tide ad. Ha-ha in fact the commercial was a tide ad. The commercial starred Stranger Things actor David Harbour. He is seen in a car and alcoholic beverage commercial. This ad has become meme in a matter of days. The ad mocks Matthew McConaughey’s car commercials, and mocks all jewelry commercials.

By: Kat McConnell/jh

What would you do? What would your reaction be?

I would find everyone I know and care about so if I were to die I would at least spend my last moments with them. It is a really depressing subject, but if you are ever in The Super Bowl also had a great halftime show by Justin Timber- a perilous situation where you need to evacuate or head for lake which was not a Tide ad. The halftime show showed Justin Timberlashelter you need to have a plan and be prepared. We practice ke’s all hits from the past such as TKO, Mirrors, Can’t Stop the Feeling, and fire and tornado drills, but we never do drills for tsunami or Suit and Tie. Anyways back to the Tide ad, the ad showed some classic hurricanes because they never affect us here in Oklahoma. commercials like friends hanging out and insurance commercials. The insurance scene shows that the is commercial is in fact a tide ad by the mechanic If you are on vacation and there is a terrible storm; having a sparkling white shirt and pants. They even showed Alexa in the where will you go? Think about these things and maybe talk commercial which she also says is a tide ad due to everyone’s clean clothes. about it to your family. Most cities have buildings they use By the way I am legally supposed to tell you that this is a Tide ad. as safe spots in case of an emergency.

Time is Good

North Korea Military Parade

By: Angelina Slaten/kk

By: Mia Farrell/cr

I’ve always been told good things take time. It’s always proven me right too. Relationships grow over time. Weight loss happens over time. Wealth happens over time. There for happiness happens over time. The things you want most in life usually doesn’t happen immediately. Think about it. What do you want most? Okay, now look at how long it would take you to have that. Exactly! Does it happen overnight? Probably not.

North Korea took their chance to show off their most powerful weapons on the eve of the 2018 Winter Olympics. The parade began with thousands of goose-stepping troops lined up in Kim Il-sung Square to form words and slogans. North Korea displayed tanks, amored vehicles, jets, and thousands of people dressed in red, white, and yellow. Using the peoples clothing colors, they formed the letters “Kim Jong-un.” The jets flew over the square, from the sky it looked as if the people were standing in a formation showing the number 70.

Good things usually take time, not just because most things do. But there is usually a learning process behind it. Like with fitness goals. You want to change something, right? But it takes learning to force you to go to the gym or go run. Also to make you control your eating habits. Then later after you’ve reached your goal, you will have learned a great deal of self-control. So say you could just instantly lose weight, overnight no big deal. But then you’d never learn how to make yourself stop bad habits to reap good things. So the point of this is good things take time. Not just because there good, but because they help you learn something along the way. And that’s usually the best things in life, the ones where you learn the most along the ride.

Did you know that teenage boys (age 12-17) tend to earn less weekly than same-aged girls, but save more per A Proud Supporter of Kingfisher High School

The North also rolled out what appeared to be a Hwasong -12 intermediate-range missile, which it flew over Japan twice last year as it stepped up the aggressiveness of its weapons tests. “As long as imperialism remains on the Earth and as long as the United States’ hostile policy on North Korea continues, the mission of our military, which is to protect our country and people and secure peace, can never change,” Kim Jong-un stated in his televised speech. He, however, made no comments about the Olympics in the parts of his speech that were broadcast. The coverage of the parade seemed edited. Kim Jong-un has gone out of his way to make sure the North will hold attention throughout the games. North Korea has no intention of meeting US officials during the Winter Olympics, state media reported. Mike Pence has said Washington would soon unveil “the toughest and most aggressive round of economic sanctions on North Korea ever” while South Korea wants to use the Olympics to re-engage with the North. Tension is still high between the North and the South, however, some communication has begun. The Games will see both Koreas march under one flag at Friday's opening ceremony. The North often overly boasts of its military parades, but reports of this surfaced afterwards with TV airing delayed footage. But the South announced on Thursday its president would meet the North's Olympics delegation on Saturday, Feb 10. Kim Jong-un reported that North Korea had become a “world class military power.” The North had insisted on the event, despite criticism from the US and others about its timing - a day before the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, which run from 9 to 25 February in the mountain town of PyeongChang, South Korea. North Korea stated they have no intentions of meeting with the US officials during the Games.

SK Gaming Roster Drama By: Michael Mastalka/jh SK Gaming is a Brazilian Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team that is, at the time of writing, ranked 3rd in the world. The roster was considered the world’s best team until 16th October 2017, when after a string of disappointing results, they dropped down the world rankings. The Brazilians have now begun their fight back to reclaim the number one spot from the current holders of the title, FaZe Clan. FalleN is the star AWP player and in-game leader for the lineup and spoke to RuHub Media in an interview before the $500,000 tournament of EPICENTER. In the interview, FalleN revealed why felps wanted to leave the roster, saying it’s not a secret that he had to adjust and play positions he would not usually play. ”It’s not a secret that felps had to adjust his game a lot to become the player that we really needed him to be. It was very difficult for him to do those new roles, and also to even change his habits in-game. ”I think he did a good job, we were quite successful, we won five tournaments this year and he was very important in all of them, but I think it wasn’t that fun for him to play that way, because it’s not the way he likes to play.” He then revealed that the way felps was not enjoying playing as much, combined with disappointing results, meant he found no joy in playing CS:GO anymore and his motivation suffered. ”When results start to not come, when you have pressure, when you have all those things even when everything starts to sum up, it ended up that he really didn’t have the joy that somebody needed to have for when we want to play Counter-Strike, because if you don’t have fun, normally you don’t play well.” FalleN then said that their new stand-in and potential permanent fifth player, Ricardo ‘boltz’ Prass, will fit into the roles they need him to play better than the player he is replacing. ”With the addition of boltz, theoretically, it is going to be much easier for him to fit the role he has to do on our team because he plays a lot of roles, and boltz likes to play more passively than felps.” FalleN then revealed what motivates him at the present time, is the mission of defeating FaZe. He said they were looking sharp, and playing well, and he wants to beat them down. ”What keeps motivating me, is the challenge to keep doing more than I already did. For now, I want to be honest, I want to beat FaZe, because they came to the tourneys, they are looking very sharp, and they are definitely a good team and I won’t feel like my mission is accomplished until we beat them down.”

Doctor Who Season Eleven By Kolby Gilbert/jh There have been eleven official Doctors in the BBC television series, Doctor Who. Ever since the beginning, each regeneration of the Doctor has been a male actor. In the autumn of 2018, Jodie Whittaker will be the first female to play the title. Jodie Whittaker is an English actress and is most known for her character in the show Broadchurch. She was born on June 3rd, 1982. She is married to Christian Contreras and has one child. She has been in many other shows such as The Smoke, Marchlands, The Assets, and Trust Me. She has also acted in the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the National Theatre, and the Almeida Theatre. As the first woman to be the lead character in Doctor Who, it is very important that she gets this right. Most fans are excited for this new surprise, but there is a small minority that will be upset with this change. Whittaker has much experience in acting and she will most likely be the best person to fit this role. She was the first choice in casting the role of the new Doctor. Bradley Walsh has also been cast and will play alongside with Jodie Whittaker in the new season as the Doctor’s companion. Everyone will just have to wait and see how everything plays out in season eleven of Doctor Who.

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict J’s Top 8 for February By Matthew Palmer/jh

by Jacob Conrady/cr This is my top 8 songs for February.

Over the last 70 years The Jewish and Muslim communities have been at odds fighting over territory in Israel/Palestine. This fight started back in 66 CE when the Romans expelled the Jews from Israel starting the great diaspora and creating the country of Palaestina. Later the Muslims conquered the holy land in 638 CE. Four Centuries later the crusaders traveled to take back Palestine from the Muslims and for 200 years they fought over the holy land until the Ottoman Empire started its reign.

Meadow- Stone Temple Pilots, this is their new breakout hit, featuring their new leads singer, after the passing of the late and great, Scott Weiland. If you hear this song and know STP, you would never guess that this is them. It is a lot more of a alternative rock, and I have to admit, it is really good. Sexyback- Justin Timberlake, this song is a classic from the 2000’s and after seeing his halftime performance at the super bowl, helped bring back this throwback and memories of growing up listening to it.

The Ottomans held Israel in their grasp until the end of WWI. The British took control over Palestine in the wake of the Ottoman Empire. After WWII in 1947, increased tensions and Filthy- Justin Timberlake, this song is off of his new album, Man of the violence forced the British to withdraw from Palestine. In 1948 Woods. This was his opening song at the Super Bowl, and personally I love it. When I first listened to it, I knew exactly where he got the leaders of the Jewish community declared the establishment his inspiration for the song, from the one of a kind, late and great, of a Jewish state known as Israel. That same year the armies of Prince. Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq marched into Israel starting the Arab- Israeli War. Israel has been involved in a number Gone Away- Five Finger Death Punch, 5FDP is not necessarily my cup of conflicts in the Middle East over the past couple of years. of tea, but I absolutely love this song. It is written and performed by The Offspring, but they cover it. Personally, I think it is better. The 1956 Suez Crisis, the 1967 Six-Day War, the 1973 If you listen to the lyrics of the song they are kind of depressing, Yom Kippur War, the 1982 Lebanon War, and the 2006 Lebanon and I think the slower harder feel 5FDP does to it, changes the way you listen to the song. war. Israel has had a rough history with the Muslim and Jewish religions fight over it but hopefully this conflict can be resolved First Class- Rainbow Kitten Surprise, do not let the name scare you off, in the coming years. because this is a great song. This band is from the mountains of North Carolina, so you can imagine the folk feel of the music already. The vocals remind me of Caleb Followill, the lead singer of Kings of Leon, but the music reminds me of Mumford & Sons.

Summer Body By Angelina Slaten/kk

Two High- Moon Taxi, this song sounds a lot like a mix between pop and folk. and I love the mixing sound.

It’s that time of year. Kiss This- The Struts, vocals that sound like Freddy Mercury, music Where the gym is literally jam packed with people. Everyone is that has a Mick Jagger feel, and the abstract style of David Bowie, ready to lose all their weight from the holidays. I mean do you makes The Struts as cool as they are, this song is like a goodbye blame them? I mean yeah everyone wants that perfect figure for song, thus the name. the summer. I mean who doesn’t? So fan of fast paced rock, I’d recommend them. it all comes down to everyone getting a gym membership and kicking booty for the next 2 months. This isn’t hurting anyone, especially Garret. He’s probably all excited it is this time of year. I mean dang, business is booming for him about now.

February 13, 2018 Raymond Felton had 7 points in place of the injured Westbrook at point guard. Alex Abrines was just 3-for-10 from the field and 1-for-6 from three point range.

Lost Without Russ and Melo By Frida Gonzalez/jh With both Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony out with sprained ankles, the Oklahoma City Thunder lost 106-81 to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. OKC got off to quick start behind Paul George, who had 29 points and hit five 3-pointers. The Thunder led by as many as nine points in the first quarter, then the Lakers started to heat up, and by the end of the quarter, led 30-27. L.A. never trailed after

that, leading 52-46 at halftime, and extending the lead in the second half to earn a season split in the four-game series. Steven Adams was the only other Thunder player to score in double figures with 13 points, and added 9 rebounds. Two Thunder starters did not score, with Patrick Patterson going 0-for-6 from the field and missing five 3-pointers. Josh Huestis was 0for-3 from the field and did not score.

OKC shot just 36 percent from the field and were 8-for-34 from three point land. Five Lakers scored in double figures, led by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who had 20 points. L.A. hit 10 three-pointers. The Lakers were also short-handed, after a trade with Cleveland sent Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance, Jr. to the Cavaliers that will eventually bring Isaiah Thomas and Channing Frye, plus the Cavs first round pick in 2018 to the Lakers. OKC falls to 31-25 on the season. The Thunder returns home to host Memphis Sunday at 6:00 pm at Chesapeake Arena.

Cleveland Cavaliers

gets a lot of the attention on the Lakers, who want to build a team around him.

By: Jacob Conrady/jh

They also traded Dwayne Wade, Thirty-Six year old superstar, who played for years in Miami with LeBron, bringing them championship rings and many wins. He was traded for a heavily protected 2nd- round pick in the next draft. This in my opinion was their worst trade. Given that Dwayne Wade is thirty-six and is likely to retire in the near future, is still a very effective basketball player. They were thinking for the future for the team, but I think they should have kept him at least for this year, insuring them to play well in the playoffs.

As of yesterday, the Cleveland Cavs brought a lot of attention to themselves by making a lot of very surprising, ground- breaking trades. Players including Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Derrick Rose, Dwayne Wade, and Iman Shumpart. All players were key parts to the Cavs, leaving everyone wondering if it was worth it. With Kevin Love being injured, it seems the Cavs have lost everyone except LeBron. Isaiah, Dwayne, and Jae played a major role in Cavs gameplay and were essential to their offense and defense. They started off with a three way trade deal between the Jazz and the Kings. The Cavs received George Hill.

The Cavs were also looking to make a trade to the Los Angeles Clippers for big man DeAndre Jordan, who I think they should have really tried for, because I think he would be a good fit for them. DeAndre, an All-Star and member of the USA team in the Olympics, has been with the Clippers for many years, alongside his longtime teammate, Blake Griffen.

The Cavs sent Jae Crowder and Derrick Rose to the Jazz. And the Kings received Iman Shumpert. They traded Thomas to the Blake was traded to the Detroit Pistons a couple weeks ago, Los Angeles Lakers to the Lakers for breakout rookie, Larry Nance and the Pistons have won five straight games since the trade. So the JR., and Jordan Clarkson. Overall, I think this was a pretty good trade, at least for the Cavs. Word was, that Isaiah Thomas would be question remains, will the Cavs do good for these trades and make coming off the bench, because of Lonzo Ball, a first year rookie who them pay off? Or will the trades be a bust and they will keep losing?

Women, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. I thought Wonder Women was good, not the best movie I’ve seen. If you like super hero movies you’ll most likely enjoy Wonder Women.

I didn’t like Star Wars at all because I didn’t see any of the other ones so it didn’t make any sense to me, but if you’ve seen the other ones you might like The Last Jedi. I’d like to see the movie It someI’ve only seen two of these Wonder time soon I’ve heard its good.

Fortnite: The Game That Took Me by Storm Opinion by: Ronnie Porter/cr As many of you know, Fortnite grows more popular every day. With new updates every week and game modes coming out frequently, it never really gets too old. The point of the game is to be the last one alive in a 1 vs. 100 battle royale. You have a huge map to scavenge for weapons, grenades, healing supplies, and even bushes to hide it. You use your pickaxe to gather resources to build bases, like wood, stone, and metal. Now, as the game seems simple, it can be extremely stressful. In a situation with 5 people left, it can keep you on the edge of your seat, especially when the restricted wall is closing you in. You may not know where anyone is, so that keeps you worried about the outcome. In the end, the game can be very stressful, and almost scary. But, with Valentine’s Day coming soon, I’m going to be playing Fortnite and landing at Lonely Lodge. The other half of Fortnite, Fortnite Save the World, you fight with a bunch of other people against waves of zombies. You get materials to level up weapons and get new characters. I personally do not play the PvE due to its price, but once it releases for free, then you can expect me to be playing it. It seems to be a really good free roam game, and I’m very excited for its free release.

Year of the Dog in OW By Ryan Sisk/cr It’s that time of year again, Overwatch is celebrating the new Year of the Dog event in honor of the Chinese new year. New skins, emotes, sprays, and victory poses. New legendary skins for heroes include, Genji, Zarya, McCree, Pharah, and Mercy. Genji’s skin resembles a samurai with a broadsword instead of a katana. Zarya is a jade dragon statue which looks pretty bad. McCree fans didn’t get the best skin this event but McCree rocks a new goatee similar to Hanzo’s beard. Pharah has a turquoise jade dragon flight suit and her rocket launcher has a dragon head on it. Mercy’s skin is just a simple Chinese new year attire to celebrate the Year of the Dog. Along with these new cosmetics there is a returning game mode that was released during the Year of the Rooster, Capture the Flag.

New Backwards compatibility By Tyler Roman/cr In big Xbox One backwards compatibility news Microsoft has announced that Splinter Cell: Conviction has been added to the list. Splinter Cell: Conviction came out in 2010 and was released by Ubisoft. Splinter Cell has been a long running series in Ubisoft’s stealth-action games. If you already own the games you should be able to pop the disc into the Xbox One and start playing. You can also play I if you had the game previously downloaded on your old Xbox 360 otherwise you will have to download it on the Xbox Store. Splinter Cell: is my favorite Splinter Cell game because of its interesting campaign. It also has an intriguing co-op mode which has a completely different story from the main game. In co-op you play with a friend and work together to take down enemies and support each other from the shadows. Another nice feature in the game is executions. Executions allow you to take out enemies in a rewarding way. Altogether I am excited to see Microsoft adding this game to the list of backwards compatibility games and, I cannot wait to see what other games they will be adding to their list in the future.

You currently have the opportunity to receive a code for the Pokémon Dialga, which you can use for Ultra Moon, and the Pokémon Palkia, which use can use for Ultra Sun. You only have until February 28th to grab these codes, so grab them fast. The best part about this 2018 event is the chance to grab a shiny Zygarde in the month of June. Shadow of the Colossus Remake

OWL’s First Women

By: Jackson Leffingwell/cr

By Tyler Roman/sj

Shadow of the Colossus is getting a remake and comes out on February 6th, 2018. The original game came out on October 18th, 2005, the game is about a character named Wander, (Wanda) who wants to resurrect a girl named Mono. However, little is known about Mono, other than that she was a maiden who was somehow sacrificed because she was believed to have a cursed destiny. Assisting Wander in his quest to revive her is his loyal horse, Agro, who serves as his only ally in defeating the colossi. Wander also receives aid from an entity called Dormin. The story of Shadow of the Colossus begins as Wander enters the forbidden land, but Wander has stolen an ancient sword prior to the game, which is the only weapon capable of defeating the colossi. Led to the massive Shrine of Worship at the center of the region, Wander carries with him the body of a maiden named Mono. A moment later, several man-like shadowy creatures appear and prepare to attack Wander before he easily dismisses them with a wave of the ancient sword in his possession.

Overwatch League, or OWL, as many know has no women players. This has been very apparent since the launch of OWL but, recently there has been news of a player by the name of Geguri who might be joining the league. Geguri is a famous Zarya main and she is so good that she at one point was accused of hacking by professional players during a professional competitive match. Geguri has already been in two competitive Overwatch teams in the past. On her Twitter for the past two weeks she had been talking about how she would love to be on an OWL team. It turns out she might be on the Shanghai Dragons roster which works very well because the team has been in need of much needs reinforcements.

After vanquishing the shadow creatures, the voice of the disembodied entity known as "Dormin" echoes from above, expressing surprise that Wander possesses the weapon. Wander requests that Dormin return Mono's soul to her Shanghai so far has not won one game in body, to which Dormin states may be possible on the condition that Wander can OWL though they did manage to take a point from destroy the sixteen idols lining the temple's hall by using the ancient sword to kill Seoul Dynasty which was an impressive feat. Though nothing has been Mono, Wander sets out to search for the sixteen colossi and destroy them. Now I confirmed, there is a massive possibility that she will be will show you a picture of Wander with one of the colossi in the remake. getting a contract soon from the League office.

Board of Education Report February 5, 2018 The Kingfisher Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, February 5, 2018 at 7PM in the Board of Education Building with all members present. President David Dieselhorst called the meeting to order and asked Superintendent of Schools Jason Sternberger to report on any honors and recognitions received by the district during the previous month. Supt. Sternberger told the Board of upcoming events including wrestling and basketball tournaments and that the FFA and 4H programs are beginning their competition season. He also reminded the members of the upcoming board member election on February 13. After approving minutes, the Board considered financials and encumbrances. Mr. Sternberger told the Board the district is in exceptional shape and with ad valorum tax collections up over $1 million from this time last year; the district is on track to have an exceptional carry over of funds. In fact the carryover may exceed that permitted by law and the district may have to spend money on non-recurring projects. He suggested the district needs to keep the carry-over at around $1.7 million and so would have about $700,000 extra to spend on projects. These projects may include resurfacing parking lots, repairing the roof at the Heritage School annex, replacing phone systems, installing new doors, continuing improvements for the softball fields and numerous other small projects including planned improvements to the technology of the district. After approving the usual encumbrances, the Board also approved two contracts for the district’s software needs and two fundraisers for the Gilmour and middle schools. They also declared surplus a number of computers and other technology items after the IT specialists had taken all the useable parts. The Board then heard a proposal from Supt. Sternberger for an additional way to “spend down” the anticipated carry-over. He suggested there is sufficient money to provide a “professional development stipend” for employees of the district and, after some discussion, this was approved and details will follow. He also discussed the need for both a recruiting stipend to compete with other districts when seeking to employ teachers to come to Kingfisher due to the somewhat higher cost of housing and the possibility of a retention stipend, payable in August, for those current staff who commit to return to the district for the next school year. The Board liked this idea and will reconsider it in March or April when a clearer picture of how much extra money there’ll be. Mr. Sternberger showed the Board a graph indicating that, for example, a $1000 staff stipend would cost the district about $237,000. The Board hear a report on a recent grant fro Devon Energy to the middle school for $10,000 to build a greenhouse and then discussed a technology plan for the district. This plan involves a three year period of purchasing “Chromebook” laptop computers that would only be useable via the district’s server. There would be no storage space on the computer itself and only the “cloud” would serve as the source for student use. Thus, any computer could be used by any student with an email login. The ultimate goal would be to have a 1 to 1 arrangement for all students and a secondary goal of having all text books online and moving toward a paperless classroom. Clearly, intensive professional development will be required for most teachers. The Board accepted the resignation for retirement of Kari Patterson then went into executive session at 750 returning at 824 to hire a 4th grade teacher, a special ed paraprofessional and reemploy all principals and the district Special Ed Director. The Board adjourned at 827.
