In November 2009, Merck and Schering Plough merged to create a new company. Our revenue for 2010 was USD 45,987 billion and sales outside US accounted for 56% of total revenue, increasingly from 47% in 2009, and 44% in 2008. This demonstrates the increasing importance of the non - US market for our Company. We are placing a special emphasis on strengthening our presence in emerging markets, which are expected to be home to more than 80% of the world’s population and 40% of its gross domestic product by 2018. We have dramatically increased our investment in China and other key emerging markets. Our goal is to derive over 25% of our global pharmaceutical and vaccine revenue from emerging markets in 2013. Our businesses are in Pharmaceuticals including vaccines and biologics; Consumer Care; and Animal Health. Today, we are the second-largest healthcare company in the world. We are also a global leader in consumer products and animal care. We invest billions of research dollars to find medicines that can help improve lives. Approximately 15,500 people are employed in the Company’s research activities. R&D expenditure has been increasing from year to year: it was USD11.0 billion in 2010, USD 5,8 billion in 2009, and USD 4,8 billion in 2008. As at 31st December 2010, the Company had approximately 94,000 employees worldwide, of which 60% are located outside US. Our operations are global in nature, and we operate from over 140 countries around the world. In the Asia Pacific region, we have offices in 14 countries including China, India, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

VIETNAM MSD in Vietnam began as a representative office in XXXX with a staff force of XX. Over a few short years, we have grown tremendously. We now have XXX staff employed in our two offices in Ho Chi Minh City (HCM City) and Hanoi.


New office opening in HCM City in January 2011

In January 2011, we moved into our new office in HCM City, and the opening of this new office is testimony of our long-term commitment to the Vietnamese market and in serving Vietnamese patients. Our Managing Director for Vietnam, Stephen Walter, declared “MSD is firmly committed to building a long-term presence here in Vietnam. We have a broad and innovative portfolio of pharmaceuticals, vaccines and biologics which can address unmet medical needs and provide the Vietnamese people with access to affordable, quality healthcare.” Our Vice President for Asia, Craig Kelly, added “Vietnam is an important market for MSD in the Asia Pacific region. To build the business here, we will be investing in development of our people and organization, enhancing medical and clinical capability, and bringing innovation to patients and the healthcare community”. We were very honoured to have Dr. Pham Viet Thanh, Director of Health Service of HCM City to officiate on our opening. Other key officials who graced our opening ceremony included Professor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, HOSREM’s Chairwoman and former Director of Tu Du Hospital; Dr. Tran Ngoc Huu from the HCM City Pasteur Institute; and representatives from pharmacies, hospitals and our business partners. Over 35 media organizations also attended our grand opening ceremony.
