Skulls Sentinel Spring 2012 DELTA UPSILON CHAPTER AT VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA

Phi Kaps, Welcome by

Khiem Tran

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Skulls Sentinel, the newsletter of the Delta Upsilon Chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Virginia Commonwealth University. Phi Kappa Sigma is an international male social fraternity that dates back to 1850. With over 50 active chapters, colonies, and interest groups, the fraternity takes great pride in having over 1,200 active members and over 40,000 alumni. The Delta Upsilon Chapter was founded at VCU on January 30, 2010. Since then, the chapter has initiated men into Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, and Zeta classes, with over 40 current, active members.

Mission It is our will to redefine what it means to be a Fraternity, a Brother, and a Man. With unbiased trust and loyalty, we promote and support individual and fraternal growth. We uphold the values set by our forefathers through excellence in academia, generosity in philanthropy, and distinction in campus leadership. We share the belief that a True Skull possesses unlimited potential in all endeavors, ever striving to become a Man of Honor.

Vision Promoting Brotherhood by upholding values, stimulating personal and collective growth, and dismantling stereotypes.

Founded at the University of Pennsylvania in 1850, Phi Kappa Sigma has long been an innovative presence in the fraternity world. By living our values, recognizing the importance of acceptance, and seeking to learn and lead in all aspects of life, Phi Kaps (affectionately known as the Skulls) always strive to succeed and remain, as the maxim emblazoned on our crest states, “equal to the stars in endurance.”

Spring Formal Friday night was a chance for brothers to look sharp at River’s Bend golf course in Chester, Virginia. The night started off at Andrew Kline’s house, where brothers met up to take the Bottom and Back Bus to the event. Spring Formal allowed brothers to bond with each other, mingle with dates, and have an all-around good time, with special appearances from Javier Meggo and Adam Stevenson. Special thanks to Buddy Donnelly and his team for organizing a great event.

Family Weekend Many thanks to all parents and families who came out th to 8 ½ Canal on Saturday, April 14 . If you happened to miss it, the event was a great opportunity to meet the families of fellow Phi Kaps. We were blessed to have both wonderful weather and great potluck dishes.

We hope everyone enjoyed the slideshow and learned a little more about the Delta Upsilon Chapter at VCU. Since the event was so well received, thanks to Blake Mirzayan and his team, we hope to turn this into an annual event. See you next year!

Charity Dunk-A-Cop 2012 On Thursday, April 19, 2012, Phi Kappa Sigma teamed up with the VCU Police Department to present the inaugural Charity Dunk-A-Cop fundraiser for 2012. Officers, including Chief of Police John Venuti, volunteered their time to be dunked in a water tank in an effort to raise money for VA Special Olympics and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; the latter is Phi Kappa Sigma’s national philanthropy. T-shirt sales helped generate buzz, and months of planning led by philanthropy chair Khiem Tran proved highly successful with over $1,400 raised for the two charities.
