Hiking with purpose and for a cause

Johnson tells Rotarians of trek up the Appalachian Trail Brad Johnson of Bixby told Kingfisher Rotarians of his trek of the Appalachian Trail, which took over four months, and covered 2,175 miles over 14 states. Johnson also authored a book which he made available to Rotarians and visitors following the presentation he made to the group at its weekly meeting last Tuesday. He showed overhead slides and narrated for much of the talk. “Most people who actually do this,

plan for months, and even years, and do their best to get into backpack/ hiking endurance shape before undertaking it,” Johnson said. “And almost all who finish it have to have a reason for doing it. “It’s one thing to say that you’re going to hike the Appalachian Trail. It’s quite another thing to actually finish it. I’m not saying it to brag that I did something out of the ordinary. I’m simply saying that if you don’t have a firm goal and reason for doing it in

mind, then for most who attempt it, it simply goes away somewhere along the hike and they don’t finish.” Johnson said his plan and reason was to raise $100,000 for charities, which he accomplished. He said he had a supportive wife and children, who came and visited along the trek for spans of time. “Many people think that one simply starts in Georgia and ends in GUEST SPEAKER Brad Johnson, left, author and Tulsa

businessman, with longtime friend John Johnson of the Kingfisher Rotary Club. [TIMES-FREE PRESS Staff Photo]

Pioneer offers tips for internet safety to Lomega students

Barbara Swart, right of Kingfisher was presented a 26-inch x 30-inch framed print of “Prairie Oasis” by artist Sonya Terpening by NBC Bank branch President Dennis Themer. Her name was drawn recently during the bank’s Christmas Open House. The original painting of this print was the 13th commissioned for NBC’s Oklahoma Artist Series. [Times-Free Press Staff Photo]

Lomega students in sixth through ninth grades were educated recently about cyberbullying and internet safety by Chad Kliewer, Pioneer’s cyber information security officer. Kliewer shared information from The Center for Cyber Safety and Education on Cyberbullying. He stressed the importance of knowing how to stay safe and secure when on-

line. The information covered, consisted of exploring kind a n d p o s i t i ve behavior when interacting online and things to keep in mind when videoing and photo sharing, tagging, posting, and many other key concepts. “Hopefully, this information helps children begin to understand how their individual behavior online affects others,”

Kliewer said. “I firmly believe that online safety needs to be an ongoing conversation between the parents or guardian, the child and schools.” For more information on cybersecurity, Kliewer suggests visiting the following websites: www.safeandsecureonline.org, www.stopthinkconnect.org and www.consumer.ftc.gov/ topics/protecting-kids-online.
