exhibitions South Shore Arts is pleased to present For the Love of the Game: Major League Sports in Art & Memorabilia, a blockbuster exhibit celebrating great American sports traditions, heroes and teams from across the nation. As a wildly popular form of entertainment, sports has bonded family, friends and communities throughout our shared history. South Shore Arts recognizes sports enthusiast Terry McMahon whose collection was the inspiration for this exhibit.

For the Love of the Game will include a widespread collection of rare photographs, signed baseballs and unique portraits from sports collectors across the region, along with artwork that honors the greats of the games. Highlights of the exhibit will include portraits and action shots from the origins of baseball at the turn of the 20th Century, including all-star players from the first MLB All Star Exhibition Game held at Comiskey Park as part the 1933 Chicago’s World Fair. The game featured Lou Gehrig, the greatest first baseman of all time, Chicago White Sox outfielder Al Simmons and legendary baseball player Babe Ruth, who highlighted the game by hitting a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the third inning. Several works by famed artist LeRoy Neiman, known for his brilliantly colorful expressionistic paintings and screen prints of famous athletes will be exhibited, including prints of Willie Mays, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Michael Jordan and Mohammed Ali, plus several horse racing works, one featuring Secretariat, the thoroughbred who became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years in 1973. Chicago artist Mark McMahon’s signature paintings of Chicago stadiums and the die-hard fans that fill them game after game will also be featured, one depicting the hard-fought 2010 Stanley Cup championship with Chicago Blackhawk fans taking to the streets in joyful celebration. The Blackhawks will be well represented with photos from their 2010, 2013 and 2015 Stanley Cup Championship wins. Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith and other teammates who helped hoist the cup will be featured in the gallery, along with greats like Wayne Gretzky, who many call the greatest hockey player of all time. The iconic Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Julius Erving will all grace the gallery walls. Signed basketballs, famous game photos and even some books will be available to peruse about the games in which these famous athletes played. For the Love of the Game: Major League Sports in Art & Memorabilia will run November 14, 2017 through January 28, 2018 at the Center For Visual and Performing Arts. Admission for the show is $2 for adults and free to students and South Shore Arts Members. Docent-led exhibit tours for organizations and schools can be scheduled by calling 219/836-1839, ext. 108.

A Tribute to Our Symphony Musicians!

Guests enjoyed a gorgeous late summer afternoon in September at a party sponsored by BMO Harris Bank in our new Crown Point home at the Artful Garden. Local artisans displayed their wares, including jewelry and fashion selected especially for the day. Fall mums were in abundance throughout the garden as the Jeff Brown Trio entertained. Generous portions of delicious shrimp cocktail and other delicacies were passed, while local brews and select wines added to the festivity, providing a relaxing vibe. Thanks to our enthusiastic committee of Crown Point volunteers who helped to organize the event. For nearly 20 years, South Shore Arts has maintained a Crown Point branch, where our presence contributes to the quality of life for children, youth and senior citizens. Through our relocation to the Artful Garden, we continue to provide access to the arts in a setting that offers the potential for both visual and performing arts activities. We are excited to announce that, to help us kick-off our first season at the Artful Garden, a generous donor is matching all new or increased contributions dollar for dollar up to $25,000 through June 30, 2018! Please call John Cain at 219/836-1839, ext. 102, for information on how to participate in this campaign.

Final Education Concerts at Star Plaza Theatre

End on a High Note!

The Northwest Indiana Symphony presented its final Mary Elizabeth Hanna Education Concerts at the Star Plaza Theatre on October 24, 2017 with “Musica! An Exploration of Latin & Spanish Themes.” This historic concert for young people saw record attendance with almost 5,000 students from area schools in the audience! Through the combined efforts of the Symphony and South Shore Arts education departments, the goal of these concerts is to cultivate a newly discovered interest and lifelong appreciation for music among these young concertgoers. The education concert is just one of many potential ways to achieve this goal. For many, the concert is often their first exposure to live classical music. Making the event a full learning experience, teachers received a comprehensive study guide to use in their

classrooms prior to the concert. The study guide not only covered the music to be played and composers, but it also included information on instrument families, the layout of the orchestra, and a conducting lesson. There were crosscurricular lessons and activities that met Indiana Academic Standards for math, world languages, language arts and social studies. Along with the study guide, teachers received a “welcome” video message from Maestro Kirk Muspratt and a Spotify playlist of music featured in the concert. This year’s concert featured a lively selection of music by Spanish composers Manuel de Falla and Isaac Albéniz, as well as Mexican composers Agustín Lara, Rafael Méndez and Arturo Márquez. The concert also included Spanish and Latin-inspired pieces, including Toreador Song from Bizet’s Carmen and El Salon Mexico by Aaron Copeland. The audience also enjoyed a presentation by the Symphony’s Youth Orchestra on two pieces played with the adult musicians. The continued success of the education concerts would not have been possible without the interest of participating schools and educators. In an enthusiastic email following the concert, Linda Pancheri, a retired teacher and chaperone for Lowell High School’s Adaptive Music students affirmed, “What a wonderful way to start my day with my former students, all of whom have special needs. It was a joy to be able to see them become a part of that incredible musical experience; so many of them were swaying to the music, tapping their feet, and moving their own fingers as though they were playing along with the musicians! The teachers, staff, students, and I were so very appreciative!” When asked which was his favorite piece, one student was quick to answer, “That’s easy! My favorite was Granada. It sounds so majestic.” The ongoing success of this concert can also be attributed to the dedication of the Northwest Indiana Symphony staff and volunteers, as well as the financial support of Community Healthcare System, Legacy Foundation, Manhart/Gibbons Family Memorial Fund, Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc., Beta Rho Chapter, Peoples Bank, Mr. & Mrs. Glen C. Hannah and the Star Plaza Theatre. This is easily one of the Symphony’s favorite concerts of the year. Maestro Muspratt explains, “The orchestra and I enjoyed sharing this beautiful music with the students so very much! They were all extremely well behaved, respectful and well prepared. Just as importantly, they reacted so positively to each piece that we played for them!” Although these were the last education concerts to be performed at the Star Plaza Theatre, the Symphony looks forward to continuing this important educational opportunity at a new venue for years to come!
