I hope everyone is having an amazing summer so far! Though you may be relaxing, I hope you are all very involved in attending service projects.

June - July

The past month of June was exciting. We had Relay for Life in July. It was thrilling to see everyone together as everyone had a wonderful time. Thank you to everyone who had attended.

Also, thank you to all the presidents, club members that successfully sent in their submission for the month of June!

Congratulations to all the members, clubs and division that have made it successfully in the district spotlight section.

My name is Daniel Duncan, current vice president of the Wolmers Boys’ Key Club.

I recently attended a Kiwanis of Division 23 West Bingo game at the Ascot high school, just about a 15 minute walk from my house. Initially seeing that it was a bingo game caught me a bit off guard as I was used to the stereotypical boring bingo game where older folk would occasionally converse. Curiosity and the fact that fellow key club members would be there to accompany me was enough for me to attend this bingo game. Arriving and stepping through the door and not seeing anyone close to my own age, unfortunately started me off pessimistically for the night.

However, as I came to notice that there were great prizes in store, along with a witty, quick firing host, I found myself scrambling to put pennies on “B16”, “O29” and “N7”, all at once. Witty remarks that were hilariously funny such as “16, young girl” kept teeth showing all night especially my own. Different formats of bingo that I had never thought of kept me on the edge of my seat attentive with pennies in hand and a burning desire to win. The warm atmosphere in the room felt like a whole other world of excitement that easily takes you out of a somewhat reluctant shell. The overall experience will surely never be forgotten and I’ll be among the first to arrive at the next bingo game.

The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation.

This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities. The Youth Opportunities Fund is established through gifts to the G. Harold Martin Fellowships.

YOF grants can help you take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in your school, community or world.

The basics you need to know:  



YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members.

There is one funding cycle for YOF grants per year. Applications are accepted from summer through fall and must be received by October 15 at 11:59 PM EST. Applications are reviewed by the Key Club International YOF committee at their November meeting.

Clubs may request funding assistance ranging anywhere from US$100 to US$2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other









organizations to fund and complete the project.

Applicants must use Reviewr, the YOF online grant application. Previous years' applications and printed paper applications mailed to Key Club International will not be accepted.

Guidelines for submitting a YOF application is listed in the Key Club Guidebook under Board Policies.

Grant notification is emailed to all grant applicants the second week of January.

Information noting which clubs received and did not receive grant funding is posted online the third week of January.

2017 YOF GRANT NOTIFICATION 



The 2017 YOF grant recipients have been selected. Notification is emailed to ALL grant applicants the second week of January 2017. The lead Key Club member contact noted on the grant application and the Key Club faculty advisor will both receive emails.

The third week of January a list noting which clubs received and did not receive grants will be posted online.

Information needed from 2017 grant recipients Clubs who receive grant funding are asked to submit two documents to Key Club International.

Both documents should be submitted through online submission forms on this web page, keyclub.org/yof.

1. Letter of agreement (Due May 31, 2017) - A signed letter of agreement must be submitted to Key Club International before the grant check can be mailed to the grant recipient.

2. Final report (Due January 1, 2018) - This report details how your club spent grant funds. Information about what should be included in the final report is noted in section F the letter of agreement.

From 6pm to 6am, July 1st to 2nd, the 2017 edition of the Jamaica Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will certainly stay with those who attended for many years to come. For me, it was my first time attending, and as such I had no idea what to expect. The only thing I had to go off on was ‘hear say’, so be able to attend this year was half the excitement. Upon arriving (early) I got the chance to speak with several ‘regulars’, so to speak. They shared their RFL experiences with me from over the years. Two particular couples were well on their way to double digits in terms of attendance years in fact.

RFL really kicked off around 8, as that was the time the majority of attendees turned up.

Music on all sides, delicious food on sale, and relay for a cause. As the night went by and people began relaying around the Police Officer’s Club, I began to understand more of its purpose. Persons circling the venue, seeming to have abundant reserves of energy, happy and marching. I circled the venue a few times myself, but it was when the luminarias’ were placed along the walkway, I got a sense of new purpose. I was doing more than donating some money and walking a few laps. One felt as if one was a part of something bigger than one’s self. Something that affected each and every human being.

My sincerest condolences go out to each and every key clubber who has lost a loved one because of cancer, but if we can continue banding together, and walk some more laps, we can not only be a part of a change, we can be THE change.

RFL 2017 will never be forgotten.

RFL was lit. Setting up was a bit of a trial because I had no idea what to expect or what the venue was like as it was my first experience. So I went with high hopes of success. Preparation was a bit daunting due to resource sourcing however with the tremendous support of my team everything came together nicely. Upon arriving on the evening I was really excited to see my friends from other schools and sit and chat as it would be an all-night event.

At around midnight, everybody began settling down and dozing off. But not this guy I managed to capture a few images of the district administrator taking a snooze which I found really hilarious. Closer to the end, I began to get really sleepy so I dozed off for 30 minutes and was back up and running.

22 hours, no sleep. That was definitely an experience I'll never forget and I am definitely looking forward to the next one.

My RFL experience was really great. At first it wasn't all that I expected but as the night progressed it got better. I enjoyed the live music and visiting the different tents and playing fun games with the Key Club Family. The lit track was breath taking and I was really glad to be a part of it and I would go back there any day. I can't wait to enjoy future ones.

THROUGH OUR EYES

Going to ICON really opens up your eyes to how wide scale Key Club is and it comforts you on how strong the Jamaica District has been for so many years. There were lots of workshops and sessions, where you could not only meet new people and receive training, but also realize the great power of service that lies within you. See you next year in Chicago!

Hi all! I hope you are all doing well! I definitely have great news for you all. ICON 2017 went very well for the Jamaica district.

We had a total of 15 members in attendance and claimed many prizes at the event. The key club of Mt. Alvernia High School placed 3rd in the non-digitial poster competition and the key club of the St. Andrew High School for Girls placed first for their Single Service Project this year. In addition to this, all of the LG's for the key club year of 2016-2017 received the Robert F. Lucas award for outstanding Lieutenant Governors, as well as, IPG Vikram Sablani received the title of Distinguished Governor.

I am extremely proud of the District and I commend last year's district board for the tremendous work that they have done. They have definitely raised the bar and this year we are going to raise it even higher. I look forward to continuing the great work that we have already started.

EVENT RECAP

On June 30 to July 1, Immaculate Key Club, Meadowbrook Key Club and Kiwanis Club of New Kingston gave their time in passionate service at the Annual Special Olympics at the National Stadium. They helped by packaging and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for over 300 persons. The athletes and their coaches were from St. Thomas, St. Ann, St. Catherine, St. Andrew, Kingston, St. James, St. Elizabeth, Manchester, Trelawny and Portland.

On June 28, 2017, ICHS Key Clubbers, assisted members of the Kiwanis at Hope Zoo between the hours of 9:30 am – 1:00 pm. The girls supervised the students of August Town Seventh Day Adventist Basic School. They also assisted with serving lunch to the students.

LG Hassanah stated that herself and Zone Coordinator Karen Sinclair-Lym have been experiencing difficulties in contacting and getting approval from CISOCA so another idea for a project was brought to the board members of Division Six which was to embark on an uplifting campaign to two (2) homes and two (2) primary schools where they will engage in activities and distribute "goody" bags while encouraging them that they are special and important. This is a continuous project which will begin in September and end in December with a Christmas Treat and mini concert for the children to showcase their talents. Visits will alternate between home and school each month. The members agreed to the project and suggested ideas such as individual clubs should fundraise for the event and division should host a major fundraiser in December to facilitate the Christmas Treat.

LG Hassanah firstly congratulated the clubs who have been serving diligently since the conclusion of DCON and urged them to continue doing so by having summer projects.

Secondly, LG Hassanah encouraged clubs who have no conducted their installation meeting to ensure that preparations are underway to conduct it when the new school year commences. Thirdly, LG Hassanah expressed her intentions of having a divisional project by repairing and cleaning the CISOCA (Centre of Investigation of Child Abuse) building in Half Way Tree which was then accepted by the members present. The next matter at hand was getting members for International Convention (ICON) in San Antonio, Texas which was July 5th to 9th and the estimated cost to attend was $1500 USD. The members were instructed to contact LG Hassanah, Governor Moya Palmer or DA Christopher Humber. Lastly, LG Hassanah reminded the members that Relay For Life's new date was July 1-2 from 6:00pm-6:00am.

DISTRICT BUILDING

On Saturday the 15th of July, 2017, members of the Key Club Jamaica District Board embarked on a journey to Mandeville for a joint Training Conference between Kiwanis Clubs of Divisions 23 West. Key Club District Board members in attendance were District Administrator Christopher Humber, Governor Moya Palmer, District Secretary Treasurer Richard Morrison, and District Bulletin Editor Thasleema Nkrumah. The four (4) District Board members arrived at approximately 10am, and took part in several conferences, with a special section being reserved for the District Board members to give a presentation to the Kiwanians present.

District Administrator Humber outlined several plans for the future of Key Club Jamaica, such as his ten thousand (10,000) club membership goal, as well as, he proposed a challenge to the Kiwanians to become more involved in their sponsoring club’s. Governor Palmer reaffirmed most of what District Administrator Humber spoke about, with the addition of encouraging more effective communication and joint ventures between Kiwanis Clubs and Key Clubs.

On the 24th of June, 2017, members of the Key Club Jamaica District Board attended the Kiwanis Club Division 23 East & West Training Conference. The venue for this was the Guardian Life Ltd. Building, and the District Board members present were District Administrator Christopher Humber, Governor Moya Palmer, and District Secretary treasurer Richard Morrison. Arriving at 1:00pm, the District Board members sat in and listened to several basic necessities of Kiwanis Clubs, The Kiwanis Club of Jamaica Foundation, how Kiwanians and their clubs can earn the title of Distinguished, as well as Youths protection Guidelines which must be adhered to before working with SLP’s.

Upon being called to give a presentation, DA Christopher introduced the Governor and the DST, then proceeded to speak of his plans for Key Club Jamaica District. They were inclusive of, but not limited to; 1. Growing Key Club Jamaica membership to 10,000 2. A call for increased Kiwanis Participation in their SLP programs 3. Improving communication between Key Club and Kiwanis.

Upon relinquishing the lectern to Governor Moya, she also spoke of increased communication between Key Club and Kiwanis, but more in depth. The Governor outlined several steps Kiwanis Clubs should take in order to get their sponsored clubs more active in the K-Family umbrella, as well as reassurance that Key Club, will be working to improve communication.

LEADCON REPORT As District Governor, I have had the privilege of representing the Jamaica District at both the local and International levels on many occasions. One of these occasions was the Key Club International Leadership Training Conference, which was held in Indianapolis, USA. The conference commenced on the 20th of July 2017 and ended on the 23rd of July 2017.

My participation in this conference has not only helped me to develop as a From the left: International Trustee Caleb leader, so that I can better serve you all as Neale with Pennsylvania District Governor District Governor, but also, allowed me to Grace Ison, Michigan District Governor Charvi Chhatwal and Jamaica District share ideas and learn from others. I had the Governor Moya Palmer opportunity to work with the other members of the 2017-2018 International Council, which is headed by International President William Sims and International Vice President Minyoung Kim, and consists of the 33 District Governors and the 11 International Trustees.

This year, our International Trustee is Caleb Neale from the Florida District.

He is a Jamaican by birth and still has family that lives here. I believe that we can look forward to a great year with this trustee because he is very excited to work with us and is aware of the structure of the Jamaica District. Caleb is not only our trustee, but he is also the trustee for our sister districts, Michigan and Pennsylvania. While we may not be able to collaborate with our sister districts on projects, due to geographical constraints, I hope that this year I will be able to keep you updated on what is going on in those districts, so that we can feel more connected to them.

While I deeply enjoyed the leadership training and opportunities for collaboration, the highlight of the conference for me was hearing all the plans that Key Club International has for the members this year. These plans include, but are not limited to:

1. Reviewing the Youth Opportunities Fund Application 2. Re-evaluating the awards system 3. Creating ways to publish winning flyers and videos (i.e. flyers and videos that win awards at ICON) 4. Introduction of new awards such as Distinguished Committee Chair 5. Halo Movement (Partnering with Nickelodeon to reward key clubs that do outstanding service projects by featuring them on their channel) In addition to all of this, there has been the creation of the International Development and Expansion Committee, which seeks to create and maintain more International Districts like ourselves. With that said, this concludes a summary of all that took place at LeadCon 2017. Please take note of this information. Let’s work with the International Board to make this key club year great!

Meet Our International Trustee Hello Jamaica District!

My name is Caleb Neale and I'm very proud and happy to introduce myself as your International Trustee for the upcoming Key Club Year.

Though I currently reside in the US, I was actually born in Jamaica to a proudly Jamaican family (my mother is from Manchester and my father is from Clarendon) and as such, I could not be more excited to have been assigned to you all as Trustee.

In this upcoming year I look forward to doing my best to make a visible impact on your ability to do service through my work on the International Development Committee so please feel free to message me with thoughts about how I can make your service easier.

PRESIDENT REVIEWS The training was very organized and informative and so I was grateful for it because I got a better understanding of how the monthly reports should be prepared therefore making me more efficient when checking it.

On July 1, 2017 The Division 6 community hosted a secretary training session for all the clubs in the division along with a few other visitors. The nature of this session was to teach the secretaries about the monthly reports and how best it should written up. The day started with a bang as LG Hassanah introduced an amazing ice breaker that got everyone pumped thus allowing the ball to run smoothly. The session was very informative as Past President Venesha Dixon of the St. Andrew High School for Girls came and shared her expertise on the topic.

We went through the monthly reports one question at a time in a systematic manner thus allowing everyone to fully understand the does and don’ts of this very important topic. In all honesty I didn’t have one clue about how the monthly report thing works or how it is done but after that session I moved from a 1 to a 6 just like that.

by Hassanah to be extremely encouraging and eye opening as it relates to the aspects of being both a good Secretary and President. I can recall we spoke on how to correctly write a report and how to count voluntary service hours. The conference was enlightening to me for I gained new information and cleared a few misconceptions about how reports are to be done.

In addition to the monthly reports, we also learnt about the various types of projects such as the M.E.P and S.S.P that will allow us to collect some awards at DCON. Overall the session was very great, very fun and exciting and at the same time quite informative. One suggestion I’d give though is that next time some more food should be present. But other than that it was marvelous, keep up the good work.

Teen Health Different Types of Acne Scars from acne can seem like double punishment — first you had to deal with the pimples, now you have marks as a reminder.

Acne happens when the hair follicles (or "pores") on the skin become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. A plugged follicle is the perfect place for bacteria to grow and create the red bumps and pus-filled red bumps known as pimples.

Acne comes in different forms:  Mild acne: this causes the whiteheads or blackheads that most of us get at some point  Moderate acne: this can cause red, inflamed pimples (called papules) and red pimples with white centers (called pustules)  Severe acne: this causes painful, pus-filled cysts or lumps (called nodules) under the skin Most serious scarring is caused by the more severe forms of acne, with nodules more likely to leave permanent scars than other types of acne.

The best approach is to get treatment for acne soon after it appears to prevent further severe acne and more scarring. If you have nodules, see your doctor or dermatologist for treatment.

Treating Acne Scars Most of the time, those reddish or brownish acne marks that are left behind after pimples clear up will fade with no need for treatment. Picking or squeezing acne can increase the risk for scarring, though.

Acne scars take two forms:

1. scars with a gradual dip or depression (sometimes called "rolling" scars) 2. scars that are deep and narrow A person's acne needs to be under control before scars can be treated.

Service Ideas Every Key Club member is advice to partake in at least five service ideas on the list. The month service ideas will be published in the Xamayca Key. It will include at least 30 different service ideas to fill the upcoming months. This idea was implemented from the editors of each club island wide to build character and increase membership participation. Executive members are free to formulate and submit ideas for the upcoming months. The summer publications service ideas will last for two months.

Here they are

1. Clean up the building after the next Mutual activity.

2. Offer people rides to meetings and activities.

3. Play catch with a child.

16. Accompany someone who needs your help getting somewhere 17. Assist someone in gardening 18. Plant some flowers for beautification in your neighbourhood

4. Wake up early and make breakfast for your family members.

5. Write letters to your grandparents, great-aunts, and great-uncles.

6. Clean out your closet, and donate clothes you no longer use.

19. Tutor children who are having a difficult time in school.

20. Deliver meals to a homeless person 21. Tape records of the news for any blind people.

7. Clean and defrost the freezer.

8. Write someone in your family a secret “thank you” or “I love you” note.

9. Let others watch the television programs they prefer—for an entire week.

22. Host a joint cleanup project with a youth group.

23. Set up chairs for a function.

24. Help an elderly member with any task.

10. Tell your parents you love them and how much you appreciate them.

11. Play some music your parents like on the radio or stereo.

12. Read to children in a hospital.

25. Offer to help your local library with storytelling time in the children’s section.

26. Pick up trash in the park, at school, or as you walk along the sidewalk.

27. Pray for those who you know need a little extra help.

13. Organize an expedition to the park with neighbourhood kids.

14. Do some yard work.

15. Tutor someone in any subject area or language.
