Dear Parents, What artistically talented children you have! We were delighted to see the beautiful Christmas card drawings and Christmas pudding drawings that children entered in the competition run by KCF. Most of the children received their prizes in Assembly this week and the Christmas card winners in the Infant House will receive theirs on Tuesday. Your children watched a video this week in Assembly about the “Link Romania Shoebox Appeal”. I can recall how generous you have all been over the past years, sending in shoeboxes packed with lovely gifts, and I hope that as many of you as possible will be doing the same this year. It makes a real difference to the happiness of so many families in the very impoverished countries of Eastern Europe, especially at Christmas. Next Friday, children across the whole school will immerse themselves in Critical Thinking. We have invited an outside provider to run workshops in school for the entire day to encourage children to have greater independence of thought and to think “out of the box”. Puzzles, which can be useful as well as educational presents, will be available to purchase in the Hall from 3pm. As the weather has turned, so has the desire to cosy up! I hope that you have a lovely family-based weekend and keep warm. Marianne Austin

THE HAPPY PUZZLE COMPANY IN SCHOOL ON FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER There will be a Puzzle Sale after school next Friday 15th November run by the Happy Puzzle Company. The sale will take place in the Hall. There is a flier attached to the back of this week’s issue of Kew News. On that day the children from Kindergarten to Year 6 will take part in Mind Mission Workshops. Mind Missions are hands-on maths, thinking and team-building 'expeditions'. Each team is given an age-appropriate mission to complete. To achieve this, they will need to work together effectively, solving hands-on challenges requiring a wide variety of mathematical and thinking skills, collecting the pieces of information that will enable them to complete the mission. Head’s Commendations Congratulations to the following child who received a commendation this week: CHLOE R 4L - Improvements in attitude and performance in Netball Well done!

Year 3 and 4 Netball Match v Eridge House On Thursday 7th November some 3's and 4's played a netball match against Eridge House. We gave some of the Year 3's tips as it was their first match. Eridge House won the toss and chose first centre pass. They started passing down to their end but with great defending by Phoebe C we got the ball back down our end. Angelina passed to Katie then she took a brilliant shot, unfortunately it missed. Angelina got it on the rebound and tried to score and she did! 1 - 0 to Kew College. It was our centre pass and I passed to Sanaya but Eridge House got the ball and scored. By half time it was 2 - 1 to Eridge House. After Miss Sidey gave us an encouraging talk we went to play the second half. Eridge House started and got the ball down their end and scored again. After a great few minutes for us we scored again. Well done Angelina! Final score 3-2 to Eridge House but well done to all our girls- Elena, Angelina, Sanaya, Pearl,Phoebe C and Katie. I think we should improve on marking our partners. Emily 4L Year 3 Netball Match v Eridge House On Thursday 7th November Kew College played a netball match against Eridge House. I felt excited to walk onto the netball court in the position of Centre in my first ever Netball match against another school. The first half of the match was promising for Kew College because we won four goals and we kept possession of the ball and had good foot work. During the second half it got a bit harder as Eridge House were good at keeping the ball at their end and then they scored their second goal. However, by then we had nine goals and were finding good positions. Then Eridge House scored another goal taking the total score so far to 9 - 6 to us. With Eridge House starting to catch up we scored two more goals before the whistle blew. I want to say well done to all my team for marking their opponents well and sticking to them like glue. The final score was 11- 6 to Kew College. Sophie 3C

Year 1 Trip to Kew Village On Monday 4th November Year 1 ventured into the centre of Kew Village to determine exactly what shops could be found in our neighbourhood. This was a Geography trip linked to the topic of ‘Our Local Area’. In our groups we were given a clipboard with a tick list attached and were asked to identify all the different types of shops in Kew Village. We were amazed at the variety, ranging from a barbers and a bank to a butchers. Next, our task was to find out what each shop sold. The wind was chilly, but we were determined to complete our worksheets. It was a real treat for us to have such an in depth and active Geography lesson, and we must give a special thank you to the parents who accompanied us and ensured the trip was such a success.

Infant House Road Safety Assembly on Tuesday 5th November 2013 On Tuesday 5 November, John Everitt, the Safety Education Officer for Richmond Borough, visited the Infant House to give an assembly on how to cross the road safely. He taught all the children a catchy action song, “Stop, Look, Listen, ably assisted by our two elected Junior Safety Officers, Ayesha (5W) and Vincent (5L). They also demonstrated how to cross the road safely using a play road and the children were able to practise on this afterwards. Ayesha told the Infants all about the new play road at Hatherop Park, TW12 2RQ in Hampton, which was officially opened by Her Worship the Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Cllr. Meena Bond, on Friday 18 th October. It is a safe, secure place for children to practise road safety. It has painted roads and pretend zebra crossings to help children learn how to cross a road safely. You can also take your scooter or bicycle and practise with the traffic lights, junctions and parking spaces. Ayesha suggested that the children ask their parents to take them there one weekend. Vincent introduced a drawing competition, devised by the Junior Safety Officers for all children in Infants and told them about the prizes, including the opportunity for one child in each year to win a Road Safety Special Award Badge & Certificate from the Council. All children who enter the competition will receive a set of fluorescent hedgehog stickers to help them be seen on dark mornings and evenings. th
