Out of Order September 2013

Out of Order

a farce by Ray Cooney

When Richard Wiley, a Government Junior Minister, plans to spend the evening with Jane, one of the Opposition’s typists, things go disastrously wrong, beginning with the discovery of a body trapped in the window. Desperately trying to get out of the sticky situation, Richard calls for his PPS, George Pigden who, through Richard’s lies, ends up in trouble with everybody.

Directors’ Notes Simon Mott & Kev Walsh

Let’s go back to the start

t’s 8:30pm on a Sunday evening in April and two men are sitting in The Brooklyn public house in Great Lever staring intently at a cardboard box. Occasionally one of them will write something down in a small white book or take one of the small plastic fisher-price toys which are standing on the table and thrust them into the box. Both will, occasionally, laugh. This is where it all starts. Fast-forward 5 months and the same two men are still staring intently and writing things down, but this time the box has been replaced by the sprawling stage of Bolton Little Theatre. The plastic figures now full sized(ish), real life humans. Both men will, almost constantly, be laughing as the vision that they developed almost half a year earlier comes to life in front of them.

This is the joy of directing as a duo. Sitting in the pub playing with a makeshift dolls house and laughing away is fun. That’s why, much to people’s surprise, we have

managed to direct a play together without incident. By sitting down together and painstakingly going over every single move, line, joke and stage direction prior to even having a complete cast meant that when it came to putting it all together for real, we were always singing from the same song sheet. What you will see this evening is all those months of planning coming together. Of course we couldn’t have done it without the commitment of the fantastic cast and crew that have strived so hard to bring our vision to life. From the almost OCD attention to detail we have thrust upon the set builders, to our constant harassment of the wardrobe ladies, we have appreciated every minute these fantastic people – all volunteers at the theatre – have given to help make our vision a reality. Enjoy the show!
